HABCORE Happenings Volume 12, Issue 2 Summer 2012 Showboat on the Shrewsbury Grab your boater hats and bonnets for HABcore’s annual fundraiser! On September 28, 2012 HABcore will host Showboat on the Shrewsbury at 7 p.m. at McLoone’s Rum Runner in Sea Bright. New Jersey State Senator Jennifer Beck will be the Honorary Event Chair and Red Bank Mayor Pasquale Menna and long-time trustee Linda Schoepf will be honored for their sustained dedication to HABcore’s mission. A hard-working committee, under the leadership of “Cap’n” Kathleen Mullarkey, has been on board all summer to put together a wonderful celebration which represents the 15th annual gala supporting the work of HABcore. In keeping with the evening’s 19th century Showboat theme, costumed entertainers will greet guests. Professional dancers Christina Penatello and Ken Hanson, from the Fred Astaire Franchised Dance Studios, will perform on the McLoone’s stage and music will be provided by Tim McLoone and the Shirleys. Silent and live auctions, featuring Broadway ticket packages, a hot air balloon ride and multiple vacation homes, will take place along with a 50/50 to serve as fundraising activities at the event. Tickets are $150 per person. Sponsorship packages are available. Reservations are required and can be made at www.HABcore.org or by calling (732) 544-1975. HABcore Board President Marilyn Pearlman and Honorary Event Chair New Jersey State Senator Jennifer Beck with honorees Red Bank Mayor Pasquale Menna and Linda Schoepf. Volunteer Spotlight Claire Tondreau, founder and business chief of HotSpring Inc. and member of the local community, decided to devote some of her spare time to HABcore. In September 2011 Claire began volunteering on a weekly basis, with an interest in making lunch for our residents. With the desire to do more, Claire has extended her services in other ways. She has initiated dialogue among local food providers and farmers to donate their produce to the Coffey Residence and the Laurel House on a weekly basis. This is a generous addition to the vegetable garden located in the yard at Coffey Residence, which Claire also tends to weekly. She continues to be a valuable asset to HABcore and the residents look forward to her meals every Monday. Brendan Pack, a resident of Asbury Park since 2001, began volunteering at HABcore's Laurel House in February 2012. As a board member for the Asbury Park Little League, Brendan always felt that it was important to give back to his local community. Amongst Brendan’s busy schedule as a husband, father of three and director of hedge fund product management, he has dedicated some of his downtime to prep, cook and serve breakfast to 30 residents every Saturday and Sunday. We thank Brendan for his dedicated work to HABcore, as his charisma brightens up the residents’ mornings in addition to his healthy and delicious meals. HABcore is devoted to providing permanent and transitional supportive housing in a family setting to low-income persons who are homeless, disabled, or unable to care for themselves and affording them lives of dignity and meaning. A little less impatient, with those we deem too slow A little less arrogant because of all we know A little less conceited since our worth is slight A little less intolerant even when right A little more forgiving and swifter to be kind A little more desirous the word of praise to find A little more eager to help others to rejoice A little more careful to speak with a gentle voice A little more effort to see another’s view A little more willingness to extend a helping hand A little more commitment to our people and our plans A little more eagerness to listen and understand A little more resolve to do what must be done. The needs of the homeless are ever-growing and as we move into the future with several expansion projects on the horizon, we need to push even further to reach our goals. I leave you with this, as Tom Flores once said, “A total commitment is paramount to reaching the ultimate in performance.” Marilyn Pearlman President A New Development Ellen Davis has decided to take a step back in her roles at HABcore and focus on grant work as HABcore’s Grant Administrator. As a result, HABcore is excited to introduce you to our new Director of Development, Jaclyn Malley! Jaclyn has an extensive background in media production and public relations. She spent several years working with companies like Red Line Films and Six Flags Entertainment, Inc. in New York City before shifting her career focus to public relations. She earned a Master of Arts in Corporate and Public Communication from Monmouth University and has her Public Relations Specialist Certification. Jaclyn has also spent time working as a freelance public relations professional assisting companies in their media relations work, social media efforts, and rebranding campaigns. Jaclyn has been a welcome addition to the HABcore family and is currently focusing her energy on the organization’s public relations and fundraising efforts. 2 Volume 12, Issue 2 Resident Life Recap What’s your hobby? Fortunately, HABcore volunteers answer that question in a multitude of ways, and they share their hobbies and talents with residents at both the Coffey Residence and the Laurel House. Here’s a sampling of the activities offered by the Resident Life Committee: One-on-one Computer Classes: Computer systems were set up for all residents to have access to Wi-Fi internet to help develop their computer skills and remain in contact with friends and family. Painting Classes: Professional artist Peggy Masse provides an artistic outlet for our residents. Yoga Classes: Professional instructors guide residents in this relaxing physical, mental, and spiritual discipline. Birthday Bingo ♦ Jewelry Making Classes ♦ Reading Group Members of the committee have also organized an annual barbecue at each home and a trip to Sandy Hook. They are also a driving force behind the Welcome Home Project and Home Plate. The Welcome Home Project will offer practical and essential assistance as HABcore fills 30 new units in the coming year. The committee was fortunate enough to have a preview of how successful the Welcome Home Project can be as they helped a Laurel House resident transition into her own apartment earlier this summer. Home Plate was inspired by the generous fresh food donations from Delicious Orchards and Sickles Market. Both grocers supply our boarding homes with fresh fruits and vegetables on a weekly basis; the staff incorporates the donations while preparing 3 meals and 2 snacks a day for all 50 boarding home residents. The Resident Life Committee plans on taking this idea and expanding it to include other local grocers. Resident Spotlight Jackie D.—Jackie was living in her car 8 months pregnant and we were able to secure affordable, permanent housing for her. Now, she and her baby boy have a place to call home. Andrew—Andrew graduated from program and began volunteering his time. He’s doing a great job helping others at Soul Kitchen and Lunch Break. Sue—Sue is the newest addition to our Independent Living program. She moved into her own place in July and loves her new space. Tom N.—Tom has done such a great job working with our property management committee; he has taken on the responsibility of HABcore’s landscaping duties at our two boarding homes and River Street apartments. Carl S.—Carl was able to turn his issue with insomnia into a strength by working overnight shifts at the Laurel House. He spends his downtime creating original artwork and greeting cards. Visit www.CardsbyCarl.com for more information. Tom—As you may remember from our Sawdust Festival, Tom is one of our boarding home residents who uses poetry as a creative outlet. He will be performing a poetry reading and distributing a booklet of original poems at Gallery U Friday, September 21, 2012 at 8 p.m. Gallery U is located at 80 Broad Street in Red Bank. Stop having a one track mind, Can’t we all just get along and bind. 3 HABCORE Happenings From the Executive Director Financial Report As we approach our 25th anniversary, I would like to inform you of exciting new developments that are on the horizon for HABcore. Monmouth County asked us to expand our independent living apartment program to serve homeless families, veterans, and individuals with disabilities. The mix of one, two, and three bedroom apartments will serve at least another 39 people. These units will be scattered all over Monmouth County. We will be collaborating with the Affordable Housing Alliance to own and operate four newly constructed condominiums in Middletown. Two 1-bedroom and two 2-bedroom units will serve homeless families and individuals with special needs. After finally winning a lengthy court battle in our third appeal to the Superior Court, we are progressing towards our goal to redevelop the property across the street from Malley House in Beachwood. Three 2-bedroom and five studio apartments will be home to homeless families and individuals with special needs. Government Grants Rental Income Contributions Special Events Though progress has been slower than expected, we are still on track to convert the officers’ hotel on Fort Monmouth in Oceanport into supportive housing for approximately 20 homeless individuals. While you have helped us weather difficult economic times over the past few years, we need your help now more than ever as we look to almost double the 100 residents we currently serve. This means our food, utility, maintenance, and staffing budgets will increase accordingly. We have been successful in obtaining county, state, and federal funding to help develop these new units; however we are on our own to support the operations. Hopefully when I see you at our 25th anniversary celebration in the fall of 2013, I can tell you all about the new success stories among our new residents. HABcore receives 15% of the purchase price as a donation if you place an order in person and mention HABcore. 4 Volume 12, Issue 2 HABCORE Residences: property update River Street, Red Bank Independent supportive housing serving graduates of HABcore’s boarding homes Update: a bathroom vanity was replaced, a kitchen renovation included a new sink and cabinets, exposed heating pipes have been covered with stainless steel, the porch has been power washed and painted, and a French drain has been installed in the basement to alleviate flooding The Malley House, Beachwood Independent supportive housing Update: carpeting was replaced on the first floor and the second floor received a new kitchen makeover The Coffey Residence, Red Bank Class C boarding home serving 21 Update: the downstairs bathroom was retiled and repainted and the tub was resurfaced, the office has been carpeted, and the kitchen received a new commercial stove Bay Avenue, Keansburg Independent supportive housing Update: the 3 bedroom apartment has received a kitchen makeover and the unoccupied unit in the rear of the property has been gutted and is used for much needed storage The Laurel House, Asbury Park Class C boarding home serving 30 Update: the exterior and porch were recently painted, ceiling fans were installed on the porch, the washing machine has been replaced with an industrial unit, and the hallways, 2 bedrooms, and 2 bathrooms have been repainted 5 HABCORE Happenings The Bulletin Board What ’s happened ... Poker Night —HABcore hit the jackpot with its 4th annual Poker Night! Held on March 23, this popular Texas Hold’em Tournament and gaming event drew close to 100 participants. In addition to the tournament, roulette, blackjack and a chance auction kept guests busy and ultimately added $20,000 to HABcore’s coffers, a 25% increase over previous years. Jazz by the River—The 7th annual Jazz by the River fundraiser was all that jazz and more! The event took place at the riverfront home of Laurie and Ed McNamee on June 23 with entertainment from The Art Topilow Jazz Quartet. Well over 100 guests were in attendance this year, consisting of board members, HABcore supporters, and newcomers being introduced to the organization. With the addition of a silent and live auction and 50/50 raffle, HABcore was able to increase the net revenue by 40% over what was raised last year. World Changers —World Changers changed our world! On July 18, HABcore was the recipient of a service project from the religious volunteer organization World Changers. Nine volunteers arrived at our River Street location to give the front and back porches a facelift with a fresh coat of paint. Monmouth Park —HABcore saw its name in lights at Monmouth Raceway Park on August 4th! Monmouth Park named a race for HABcore and our supporters were given the opportunity to gather in the winner’s circle to present the trophy. What ’s happening... Canterbury Art Show —St. George’s by-the-River presents the Canterbury Art Show… a Tapestry of the Arts. This three day event, Sept. 14, 15 & 16, will feature an art show and sale, meet the artists reception, and St. George’s annual 50/50 raffle drawing. Proceeds benefit St. George’s by-the-River outreach program which has continually supported HABcore. Wall Stadium Speedway—Come out for a day at the raceway and support HABcore. A booth will be set up to distribute information about our cause while we sell 50/50 tickets to raise funds for our mission. Monmouth Beach Cultural Center—Trustee Peggy Masse has coordinated an art show at the Monmouth Beach Cultural Center that will feature the artwork of HABcore residents. Join us Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. Admission is free and refreshments will be served. CROP Walk —The Red Bank Crop Walk is a 5-mile walk/run to raise funds to fight hunger in Monmouth County and around the world. Food collection, music, and family activities make it a great way to help those in need. Join your friends and family October 21 to help end hunger one step at a time! The Red Bank CROP Walk benefits 17 local partners including HABcore. Registration begins at 1 p.m. and the walk starts at 2:00 p.m. at Red Bank Regional High School.
