Anjalankoski, Elimäki, Jaala, Kouvola, Kuusankoski and Valkeala merged to form the new City of Kouvola on 1.1.2009. At the same time, Kouvola became the largest garrison city, and one of the largest provincial cities, in Finland. Kouvola has a population of 89,000 and a total area of 2,800 km2. Kouvola is a city with over 450 lakes and over 7,000 summer cottages. Kouvola is located in Southern Finland, only 90 minutes away from the Capital Region by train or car. From an international point of view, Kouvola is a gateway to the east for the European Union. The distance to St. Petersburg and Russia is less than 300 km and two trains depart for St. Petersburg every day. There is a lively atmosphere in the modern city centre, with fun-filled and joyful experiences for children in the busy amusement park. Wilderness areas, lakes and forests, countryside peace. Culture, theatre, concerts and The municipality has a large total area. However, all the tourist attractions are within a half hour drive from the city centre. The Tykkimäki Amusement Park, the Repovesi National Park, the Verla World Heritage Site and the Mustila Arboretum are the most famous tourist attractions in Kouvola at the moment. In addition to these magnificent attractions, there are also many small and idyllic attractions worth experiencing in Kouvola. We will provide more information on these attractions in this brochure. We will also tell you about the attractions of Iitti, our neighbouring municipality, and its church village, where the popular Iitti Music Festival and other events are organised in the summer. Kouvola can be called the country’s biggest garrison. In fact, in addition to the Headquarters of the Military Province of Eastern Finland, in the Kouvola region there are also the Karelia Brigade and the Utti Jaeger Regiment. Furthermore, the garrison area of Kouvola also hosts the Headquarters of the Eastern Finland Logistics Regiment and the Eastern Finland Management System Centre. The new military provinces are operational leaders both in time of peace and in time of crisis. The majority of the detachments or military schools in their area operate under them. For the Military Province of Eastern Finland, these detachments are the Karelia Brigade in Valkeala, the North Karelia Brigade in Kontiolahti, the Reserve Officer School in Hamina and the Military Province of Savonia and Karelia with its headquarters in Kuopio. In addition, the Land Warfare School in Lappeenranta partly operates under the Military Province of Eastern Finland. The Defence Forces rely on compulsory military service, regional The country’s biggest defence and on the fact that the citizens have a strong will to defend their country. Kouvola will also play a major role in the future in the defence of the country. Detachments to be developed in the Kouvola region The Karelia Brigade is a strong dynamic and modern readiness Army brigade in which all branches of the Army are represented. The main task of the brigade is to train troops to defend Finland in the event of war. The Karelia Brigade trains about 3,600 conscripts every year. About 600 salaried employees work in the readiness brigade. Almost one third of them work in civilian jobs. The Utti Jaeger Regiment is a detachment under the Commander of the Army. It is responsible for the training and development of helicopter units for the Defence Forces and Special Forces for the Army, for implementing the flying operations ordered, and for the nationwide military police training. In addition to the headquarters, the regiment also includes the Helicopter Battalion, the Special Jaeger Battalion, the Support Company and the Maintenance Centre. The helicopter operations of the Defence Forces are concentrated in Utti, where also 20 new NH90 Transport Helicopters will be placed. GARNISON is to be found in Kouvola The Defence Forces’ large reorganisation can be seen clearly in the Kouvola region. When the Army became an independent branch in the military, four operational military provinces were established. The Military Province of Eastern Finland began operations at the beginning of 2008. 5 MYPA KOUVOT Veikkausliiga (the Premier Division of Finnish football) in Kouvola The best Finnish basketball since 1993 Premier Division of Finnish football at Saviniemi Stadium in Myllykoski, about half an hour drive from the centre of Kouvola. The 120-hectare area, established at the beginning of the 20th century, is right next to the road to Helsinki and it is open daily. The most famous ornamental shrubs in Mustila are the rhododendrons, of which the arboretum contains over 100 species and varieties. The rhododendrons bloom in June, when the hundreds of rhododendron shrubs in the Rhododendron Valley erupt into a variegated sea of flowers. The foreign species of conifer trees, which are grown as large forest stands, sometimes create an exotic atmosphere. The trees enchant not just by their peculiarity but also with their size. For example, the tallest Douglas firs of the southern slope have already reached a height of about 40 m. In addition, Mustila Viini Oy and Mustilan Taimitarhat (Mustila Nursery Gardens) operate in the Mustila area. The arboretum is open every day. The address of the Info Point and office of the arboretum is Mustilantie 57, 47200 Elimäki. The Kuutti Canal, connecting Repovesi and Tervajärvi, is 270 m long and it was built in 1912. First, it was built in stone, but it was rebuilt later to make it easier to drive the logs. The channel has now been renovated to its former state. The Valkeala amphitheatre, carved out by nature itself is also located in Kuutinlahti.
