I am pleased to share with you – our donors – the QEH Foundation’s 2012-13 annual report demonstrating the impact that your support has made to the people who receive and provide all levels of healthcare services at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. As donors supporting the purchase of medical equipment throughout the past year, you were an essential part of the healthcare team. For the hundreds of people who presented with chest pain and received an echocardiogram for rapid diagnosis and treatment – you were there. For the 850 babies born at the QEH last year – some who required critical care through the Neo-Natal ICU – you were there. And, for the thousands of patients who visited specialty clinics in Ambulatory Care Centre – you were there. Regardless of your level of support to the QEH Foundation, you had a direct impact on patient care and healthy outcomes. On the pages that follow, you’ll read some stories that will As my two-year inspire you to continue your support to our Island’s largest hospital. Collectively, term as Chair comes to we continue to achieve lofty philanthropic goals at a time when our family, friends, an end, we also say goodbye and healthcare providers need our help the most. Our 2012 Annual Friends for Life to retiring board members Campaign achieved an unprecedented goal of $2 million in support of priority Mike Farmer, Harry Gaudet, medical equipment for Ophthalmology, Diagnostic Imaging, the Emergency Allan Morse and current QEH Department, and the Operating Room. Our 17th Annual QEH/Eastlink Telethon Auxiliary president Dorothy Johnston. raised over $638,000 in support of the Progressive Care Unit (PCU), Ambulatory The QEH Foundation thanks them Care Centre, as well as medical equipment for provincial specialties at the QEH and current board members such as the Stroke Care Unit, Cancer Treatment Centre, and the Laboratoy . for their never-ending Among the achievements, we recognized two organizations whose missions are to support the QEH Foundation: the QEH Auxiliary surpassed $4 million in cumulative giving to the QEH Foundation, and the Wo-He-Lo Club celebrated its 80th year of service in support of the QEH nursery. commitment toward our mission. In June, the Foundation celebrated two momentous events: the unveiling of a new donor recognition wall in the lobby of the hospital, and the announcement of a significant milestone of donating more than $50 million to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for equipment purchases since inception in 1984. In 2014, the QEH Foundation will celebrate 30 years of supporting the equipment needs of the QEH. Advances in medicine and technology over the past three decades means new and upgraded medical equipment is essential and continuous, which leads us into our 2013-14 goal to raise funds to equip the surgical support services expansion and redevelopment. The QEH Foundation continues to need you as part of the healthcare team here at home on PEI. With sincere thanks, Spencer Campbell, Chair QEH Foundation P.S. Thanks to the generosity of our donors and the healthcare professionals at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, 28 year old Rachel Harper is alive to share her story. In February 2012, Rachel received a shocking diagnosis upon arrival to the QEH Emergency Department. She was athletic, young, and in great physical shape. Having ignored chest pains, shortness of breath and tightness in her legs for too long, Rachel presented with all the signs and symptoms of a pulmonary embolism - a potentially deadly blockage of arteries in the lungs caused by blood clots. With the quick action of QEH Emergency Physician, Dr. Joanne McGinn, and the attention of QEH Internal Medicine Specialist, Dr. Patrick Bergin, Rachel’s life-threatening condition was rapidly diagnosed and treated. Rachel and her family credit these QEH doctors and the nursing staff for saving her life. Last year the Foundation raised over $400,000 in Diagnostic Imaging equipment to help patients just like Rachel. 4 From left: Rachel Harper is grateful for the fast action of Emergency Physician Dr. Joanne McGinn, and Internal Medicine Specialist Dr. Patrick Bergin through her diagnosis. 2 0 1 2 - 2 0 1 3 Q E H An n u al R eport & Eileen McMillan Ambulatory Care Update. Thanks to the generous support from donors, the QEH Foundation contributed $5.2 million in medical equipment for the new Dr. Joseph A. and Eileen McMillan Ambulatory Care Centre that opened in August 2012. Since then, patients have benefited from the ease of access and expanded areas this centre has to offer. With close to 350 patient visits per day, the new Ambulatory Care Centre has improved wait times, relieved pressure on the Emergency Department, and increased overall healthcare service provisions at the QEH. As a registered nurse at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for more than 30 years, Stratford resident Kathy Larter was not as shocked as she thought she would be when she discovered she had breast cancer after detecting a lump. Surprised nonetheless, Kathy had complete faith in her fellow healthcare professionals at the QEH. Once diagnosed in March 2012, the experience of walking into the place that had become her second home changed drastically. As the Nurse Manager for Unit 4, Kathy went from taking care of mothers and their babies, to being the one taken care of. Even with her cancer diagnosis, Kathy considers herself one of the “lucky ones”, As she discovered, “you never know as she was able to receive all of her care here at home on PEI at when you might need the QEH.” the QEH. Between the Diagnostic Imaging Department, the QEH Operating Room, and the PEI Cancer Treatment Centre, she feels the care that she received was second to none. Kathy is grateful to all of her QEH family for being there for her in her time of need, and to the QEH Foundation for providing the state-of-the-art medical equipment, which many people may not realize. Kathy is a long time supporter of the QEH Foundation and since 2007 has regularly donated to the Foundation through payroll deduction. 5 2012-20 1 3 QEH A n n u al Rep o rt QEH Foundation Milestones. In June, the QEH Foundation celebrated two significant events leading into its 30th anniversary year. In addition to unveiling a new donor wall, the Foundation announced a milestone of $50 million in equipment purchases for the QEH since its inception in 1984. The QEH Foundation unveiled its first donor wall in 1989. The need for a new wall had to do with the recent renovations of the hospital, coupled with the need to expand the recognition wall to accommodate the number of people 6 whose cumulative giving reached the starting Subscriber level of recognition at $5,000, through to the Platinum level of $2,000,000 and above. The names recognized on the wall represent so much more than the financial contributions donors have made. They represent families and friends, loved ones who passed away, special events, and also many caring Islanders and visitors to PEI who decided that the QEH is important to them. All the names together represent a common compassion – the desire to help others in need. 2 0 1 2 - 2 0 1 3 Q E H An n u al R eport The QEH Foundation is extremely proud of reaching $50 million in priority medical equipment purchases for QEH services, including provincial services offered only within the QEH such as the PEI Cancer Treatment Centre. It is an accomplishment achieved only through continuing donor support. With the help of donors like you, the QEH continues to provide first-class healthcare to Islanders, right here at home on PEI. The Foundation invites all donors to drop by and view the new wall located just outside the new office on the main level of the QEH. For more information about appearing on our donor recognition wall, please call Sandra Webster at (902) 894-2182. QEH Foundation Chair Spencer Campbell gets help unveiling the new donor wall from Premier Robert Ghiz, The Honourable H. Frank Lewis, and QEH Executive Director Rick Adams. 7 2012-20 1 3 QEH A n n u al Rep o rt QEH Signature Events QEH Annual Friends for Life Campaign Residents of Prince Edward Island demonstrated yet again their Island generosity and belief in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital by donating a total of $2,000,000 during the QEH 2012 Annual Friends for Life Campaign. Funds raised through this campaign enabled the purchase of multiple pieces of priority medical equipment including two new lasers for ophthalmology, four new ultrasound units for Diagnostic Imaging and the Emergency Department, rehabilitation equipment for stroke care patients, and two new anaesthesia gas machines for the Operating Room. Annual Friends for Life Campaign chair Dr. Jerry O’Hanley was overjoyed by the response from PEI, and extends his sincere thanks to all who supported first-class healthcare, here at home, at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Spencer Campbell, left, Chair of the QEH Foundation, and Dr. Jerry O’Hanley, Chair of the 2012 Annual Friends for Life Campaign, stand outside the QEH celebrating the success of the largest annual campaign in Foundation history. QEH/Eastlink Telethon The 17th Annual QEH/Eastlink Telethon took place May 25-26. Celebrating all things PEI, the Telethon raised a record breaking amount of $638,607 to purchase priority medical equipment for areas such as: the QEH Provincial Laboratory, the Operating Room, the Progressive Care Unit and the Ambulatory Care Centre, among others. The Telethon is a true testament to our Island spirit with people giving of their time, talents and financial support, all of which is essential to making this important event a success for the Island’s hospital. Celebrating the success of this year’s Telethon from back left is Regional Manager, PEI with Eastlink TV Bruce MacLean, QEH/Eastlink Telethon Chair, Chris Whitlock, Eastlink TV Host Matt Beardsley, QEH Foundation Chair Spencer Campbell, and Telethon Co-Hosts Marlene MacDonald and Vern Murphy. Members from the QEH Auxiliary presented a total of $200,000 to Telethon Chair Chris Whitlock during this year’s QEH/Eastlink Telethon. 8 2 0 1 2 - 2 0 1 3 Q E H An n u al R eport QEH Yuletide Gala Auction With a sold-out crowd and an overwhelming level of support from QEH physicians, the Yuletide Gala Auction raised $124,546 for new cardio-respiratory equipment at the QEH. Thanks to the organizing committee, sponsors, donors, and attendees, funds raised from this event allowed the purchase of three high flow nasal oxygen systems used as an intermediary step before placing a patient on a facemask or mechanical ventilator; a Level 3 sleep lab to help patients suffering from breathing problems during sleep; and a new cough assist device to help MS, ALS, and spinal cord injury patients expand their lungs for a more forceful cough, which also prevents infections. Live and silent auctions offered a collection of one-of-a-kind items, including: romance packages, weekend getaways, dinner parties, hand made local crafts and arts, jewelry, and sweets for all tastes. Dr. Jerry O’Hanley, centre, accepts over $124,000 from the 2012 QEH Yuletide Gala Auction Committee. 10 th Annual ‘Great Day’ Fore Health ~ Harry MacLauchlan Memorial Golf Tournament The Rotary Club of Charlottetown Royalty, together with the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Foundation, held its 10th anniversary ‘Great Day’ Fore Health ~ Harry MacLauchlan Memorial Golf Tournament on June 5. Every year this event provides the QEH Foundation with a great boost of support for medical equipment needs at the QEH, and the opportunity to remember Rotarian Harry MacLauchlan who was also a good friend and donor to the Foundation. Since 2003, and with the support of generous companies and individuals, this golf day has raised $392,856 for medical equipment at the QEH. In addition to teams that commit to play each year, the event is made possible with the generous support of sponsors, in particular: Presenting Sponsor Cerner; Corporate Sponsor Scotiabank & ScotiaMcLeod ; and Lifeline Sponsor Johnson Insurance Inc. Funds raised from this event helped purchase priority medical equipment for the QEH including the Operating Room and Stroke Care. It was a “great day” for all 31 teams involved, particularly with cooperation from the weather for this year’s event. An impressive $47,246 was raised for the purchase of priority medical equipment for the QEH. From left, John Furlong, event co-chair, Barb Dunphy, QEH Foundation Chief Executive Officer, Marjorie MacLauchlan, and Lee Forbes, event co-chair, celebrate ten years of fundraising success for the QEH through the ‘Great Day’ Fore Health ~ Harry MacLauchlan Memorial Golf Tournament. 9 2012-20 1 3 QEH A n n u al Rep o rt From their neighbourhood to you. Nigel Armstrong and his family present a donation to Telethon Chair Chris Whitlock on behalf of the residents of MacMillan Crescent, who fundraise regularly in support of the QEH. The residents of MacMillan Crescent in Sherwood have been fundraising for the QEH Foundation for the past 10 years. MacMillan Crescent resident and former QEH Foundation board member Sibyl Cutcliffe has led the charge for a number of years, which includes fundraising events such as yard and bake sales, card parties, and canvassing during Telethon and the Annual Friends for Life Campaign. It’s been a win-win experience for all the residents involved, as they have had the opportunity to get to know their neighbours personally, and feel good about collectively supporting the QEH. The group has raised over $30,000 and is the only street on PEI to be on the Foundation’s new donor wall. Choose the QEH Foundation as your casual day charity of choice! Call (902) 894-2425 to order your stickers today. 10 Residents of MacMillan Crescent receive their certificate for moving up to the Patron Level ($25,000 - $49,999) on the QEH Foundation donor wall. Accepting on behalf of the group is Jack and Sibyl Cutcliffe, left, and Penny and Edgar Coffin, right. MacMillan Crescent resident Nigel Armstrong knew the importance of supporting the QEH, but it became a much more meaningful activity for him after being diagnosed with cancer in 2009. He experienced first-hand the technology and equipment that his fellow neighbors have helped purchase and is grateful for the care he was able to receive here at home on PEI. As a young person with a young family, Nigel is proud of the efforts and dedication of the street where he lives and would like to encourage other streets throughout PEI to get involved in supporting the QEH. Twenty-five weeks into her pregnancy, Jessica Reeves of Freetown was hospitalized due to complications. Five weeks later at just 30 weeks pregnant, Jessica delivered her daughter Bella Mae Reeves on December 17, 2011 through an emergency C-section. Born much earlier than Jessica and her husband Steve were prepared for, Bella Mae was born at just two pounds five ounces. Once Bella Mae grew to three pounds, they returned home to the Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the QEH. Completely unaware of the NICU expertise in PEI, Jessica’s fears and anxieties were quickly put to rest upon meeting the exceptional pediatric doctors and nursing staff at the QEH, and experiencing the level of care that she and her daughter received. Jessica experienced The Reeves family is eternally first-hand the added provisions and support grateful for the service and the NICU receives for staff at the NICU for taking care families from dedicated of their family here at home, donors, like the Woreducing anxiety, travel, and He-Lo Club. Bella Mae is now doing great, and has caught up to her age group with no long term concerns to her health. 11 2012-20 1 3 QEH A n n u al Rep o rt A legacy gift to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Bob Bateman was a successful entrepreneur who owned and operated Prince Edward Air, along with his loving wife Carolyn. Before they sold their company in 2010, they had a successful fleet of 25 airplanes with over 130 employees. Sadly, Bob passed away in March of this year following a brief but courageous battle with ALS. Bob adored his wife Carolyn and their two sons, Scott and Adam and he was so blessed when he became a ‘grampie’ to grandchildren Mara, Mateo and baby Maxim. In 2002, Bob became a member of the QEH Foundation Board, and both he and Carolyn embraced the hospital’s many fundraising efforts including the Yuletide Gala Auction which Bob chaired for one year. Anyone who took the opportunity to fly to secluded places like St. Pierre and Micquleon, or spent time in Nantucket or Boston under the personal escort of Bob and Carolyn would agree wholeheartedly they were some of the best trips, and the memories captured during those excursions would be forever treasured. During his time on the Foundation Board, Bob and Carolyn made an important decision to purchase a life insurance policy and named the QEH Foundation the owner and beneficiary. “Bob truly understood the significance of the QEH in our community,” concludes Carolyn. “We were so thankful to attend last year’s gala and see many of our friends and colleagues. Our family will never forget the incredible kindness provided to Bob while he was a patient in the ICU during his precious last days.” Bob and Carolyn worked tirelessly to raise the profile of many charities on PEI. Most importantly, they helped established the Stars for Life Foundation which was created to provide a life-long living and learning experience for young adults with autism.
