Workers’ Appreciation Dinner

A
Big Thank You goes to the Blue Springs Shrine Club, the Grandview Shrine Club, and the
Transporters for their donations.
The last meeting in May was packing day. The ladies worked very hard after the last
packing day in November and we were able to send 524 items to the Shriners Hospitals for Children. We sent quilts, Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls, IV gowns, pillow cases, cloth bags, doo rags,
shorts, pants, shirts and 86 tray favors. (see photos)
We are once again in need of clean panty hose. We use them to stuff Raggedy Ann and Andy
dolls. Helping with cutting the panty
hose and stuffing the dolls is one of
the things you can do, if you can’t
sew. Bring your panty hose to the office or give them to a Needle Guild
member.
Needle Guild meets on the 2nd
and 4th Tuesday of each month (except July, Aug. & Dec.) from 10:00
a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in Bennett Auditorium. We also have a short business
meeting, enjoy lunch, and visit. We
hope to see you at Needle Guild this

B
ig congratulations go to our newspaper staff for the outstanding production of our monthly newspaper. Many hours go into the production of our monthly newspaper and recently we submitted copies for
consideration for the Dromedary Awards. Not to my surprise, we received
an Honorable Mention for 2012. To put it into perspective, only 3 Honorable Mentions were given for Newspapers/Newsletters for Shrine publications in Shriners International. Thanks for all the work and time spent putting a quality communication tool out to all our
membership, GREAT JOB.
I can’t say enough about our Spring Ceremonial, everything turned out first class. I find the
new nobles are getting involved already. The more you get involved in the Shriners organization
the more you will get out of it. “Tomorrow is Now.” Please don’t wait to check out the many opportunities and friends this organization has to offer.

Golf Tournament
T
he Wings of Mercy Golf Committee would like to thank all Players,
Event Sponsors, Hole Sponsors, and members of the Hospital Committee, Transporters, Cooking Team and Provost for helping make this
year’s tournament a success.
The Event Sponsors were: Vance Brothers, Dave Rushton, Diamond
Muffler, Auto Glass & Tint Shop, Divan, Greeters, Patrol and Harem.
We had 18 Hole Sponsors. Many thanks to the units and clubs that
stepped up and helped by being a Hole Sponsor.
The committee also wants to thank all the teams that donated their winnings back to help the
Kids. Once again Don Weaver bought the bat. Thanks Don. Thanks Nick Swartz for donating the
bat. As stated at the tournament, you will be getting your garment bags and when they are done
we will advise.

If you are a member of Ararat Shrine you are encouraged to call the Hospital Transportation Office (816) 923-5429 or (816) 923-1319 and become one of those men who transport
our children to the St. Louis Hospital. This will be one of the most rewarding activities you
will ever experience.
We encourage every man in Ararat to become a driver. It will require you to go to your
State Driver’s License Office and obtain a copy of your driving record. As a matter of fact,
all drivers need to bring their records up to date in this manner.

Hannah, with a severe cleft lip and palate, was
given up for adoption when she was just five
months old. The Denders did not know how
extensive Hannah’s problems were until they
met her at the orphanage. “Her palate is very
wide and open to her nasal cavity,” said Jill, “often times causing food put in her mouth to come out her nose. We were shocked at
the extent of malformation as most children do not survive a cleft this severe. Constantly, her cleft makes it difficult to eat, drink, breathe and speak properly.”
After returning to the United States, they were shocked and devastated to learn that
insurance coverage was being denied, basically due to Hannah’s disability and the
fact that she was adopted. “We knew she needed surgery immediately,” said Jill, but
they had no idea how they could pay for the surgery without going into extreme and
long-term debt.
Almost a year ago, Shriners Hospitals for Children – Cincinnati received national distinction when approved as a Cleft Lip and Palate Team. This designation placed the
doctors at the Cincinnati hospital among select groups with comprehensive services
that meet the Standards for Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Teams.

“We always knew we would adopt a child,”
said Jill Dender. So, after her their last biological child was born, Jill and her husband John
began looking at adoption agencies. After a
year and a half, their search ended and they
adopted a little girl with special needs from
China.
A friend mentioned Shriners Hospitals for Children® – Cincinnati, known for their expert pediatric specialty care, so Jill picked up the phone and placed the call. She will
never forget the words she heard next, “We can help you.” After speaking with Mike
White, the RN care coordinator at the Cincinnati hospital, Jill knew she had reached
the right place and Hannah’s condition would be treated. “Relief flooded my body”
said Jill.

“We are so impressed with Dr. Gordon and all of the physicians at the Cincinnati
hospital. The nurses are incredible and you can see that everyone is happy to be here.
God told us to adopt Hannah and God has used the Shriners to take care of us. We
are so thankful to everyone at the Cincinnati hospital” she said.

I
had the pleasure this past weekend to attend the 93rd Annual meeting
of DeMolay International in Louisville, Kentucky as an active member
of the Supreme Council. The reason I bring this up is, you never know
who you will have an opportunity to talk to about the Shrine and the
great fraternity that we are all a part of. While I was sitting in the meeting
on Saturday I had over an hour of casual conversation with none other than the Imperial Potentate
of Shriners International, Mike Severe from El Jebel Shriners in Denver, Colorado. We just sat and
talked about DeMolay and the Shriners connections going back over 90 years and how the two
organizations kind of run together. Mike and I are both Senior DeMolays so we had fun talking. I
bring this up because we are so fortunate at Ararat Temple to support a DeMolay Chapter in honor
of the founder of DeMolay, Dad Frank S. Land. Dad Land was Potentate of Ararat Shrine Temple
in 1931 and also served as Imperial Potentate of the Shrine in 1954-1955. Also, in attendance was
Jack Jones, Imperial Recorder and Chris Smith, Imperial Oriental Guide.
When you have the opportunity to attend an event such as this or any National meeting just be
yourself, because all of the brothers that you will be talking to will be as proud of the fraternity as
you are, but you can be doubly proud to know that you are a member Ararat Shriners, the greatest
temple in Shrinedom!

ello all you super Shriners! What a
lovely time it is to be a Shriner! July has
a whole lot of fun planned! The Sugar
Creek parade is one of the best each year. We’ve
got a Hillbilly Degree, Steak Fry and a Run for
the Roses! If you’re a new Noble and would
like to attend an event please do. All Shriner’s
and their ladies can attend the Hillbilly Degree.
It’s a lot of fun and something you both can enjoy. The last Greeter’s event I went to was their
fish fry, it was off the hook! The Greeters never
do anything unless it’s first class, so
the “Run for the Roses” I’m sure,
will be a must attend event. Be sure
to make reservations for the Patrol
Steak Fry, it will be a huge event
and incredible time.
I’m often asked by newer
Nobles if they can bring friends
to Shrine events. The answer is
YES! This is your Temple now
and you should share it with your
friends and family. The only time
it’s a member’s only meeting is the
monthly stated meeting. So share
the fun and fellowship.
I can now announce that Ararat will again host another Masonic Unity
Evening, October 17th. We already have a
commitment from the Deputy Grand Master
David Ramsey, who should be Grand Master
in October, to attend. We hope to include the
York Rite and Scottish Rite for presentations as

Shriners International will provide new members of the
fraternity with complimentary Legacy Program pins if
they meet the following criteria:
• The member must have joined after October 17, 2011.
• He must also be a part of a Shriners legacy, meaning that
one or more of his relatives (either living or deceased)
is/was a Shriner.
New members will also need to fill out a Legacy
Program application at www.shrinersvillage.com. Upon
review and acceptance of the application he will receive
a complimentary pin for himself, and a pin for up to two
additional Shriners Legacy family members who have
signed his petition.
Phase 2 – Existing Legacies
Beginning January 1, 2012 the Legacy Program Pin will
become available to current Shriners who are part of a legacy
for a $5 contribution†. While all Shriner family members
may purchase a pin, each member must fill out a separate
application at www.shrinersvillage.com. The application for
current members will be available online January 1, 2012.

When we were last together I was bemoaning the disappearance of the Golden Rule from
many of our lives. “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.” If we were committed
to living these words on a day-to-day basis I’m convinced we would be better people, make those
around us happier, and make the community in which we live a better place for all.
With this in mind, let’s take a look at some practical tips for living the Golden Rule in our
daily lives:
• Practice empathy. Make it a habit to try to place yourself in the shoes of another person.
Really try to understand what it is like to be them, what they are going through, and why they do
what they do.
• Listen to others. We all want to talk. Very few of us want to listen. And yet, we all want to
be listened to. Take the time to actually listen to another. It will take you a long way in helping
you to understand them.
• Be less critical. We all have a tendency to criticize others, whether it be people we know or
don’t know. We need to ask ourselves if we would like to be criticized as we criticize others. The
answer is almost always “no.” So, hold back your criticism, replacing your negativism with more
positive thoughts.
• Don’t control others. We don’t like the attitude of “my way or the highway” in others, so
why would we adopt it for our own lives? When you get the urge to control put yourself in that
person’s shoes. We like our space and freedom. Others do as well.
• Rise above retaliation. We have a tendency to strike back when we’re treated badly. This
is natural. We need to resist that urge. The Golden Rule isn’t about retaliation. It’s about treating
others well, despite how they treat us.
• Post a reminder. The Golden Rule makes a great mantra and a great poster. Place these
words in a place where you can see them throughout the day, putting them to good use. You’ll be
surprised at the number of opportunities you will have to use it. The world might not change, but
you will, “The rule of treating others as we want to be treated will ultimately lead to our own
happiness. When we treat others with respect, kindness, and compassion we cannot help but
feel better about ourselves.”
A wise physician once said, “I have been practicing medicine for thirty years, and I have
prescribed many things. But in the long run, I have learned that for most of what ails the human
creature, the best medicine is patient understanding of another’s problems,” When someone asked
him, “What if it doesn’t work?” he replied, “Double the dose.”
Can you imagine how our lives and our fraternity would be if we each were to take a “double
dose” of the Golden Rule? Is it worth a try?

Nobody Told Me!

O
nce upon a time, in a galaxy far away
and long ago, I started writing a series
of articles intended for recently created Nobles. Since we had such a great Ceremonial in May, we’ve got a lot of new Nobles that
haven’t been told everything, yet.
This column is intended to help those
guys, and many others, that don’t know everything about this great organization, don’t understand why it is great, how it works, what we do,
when we do it, where we do it, or how we do it.
Today, we’ll cover the organization of
our temple’s leadership. The leadership cadre
of the local Shrine organization is a group of
about fourteen Nobles, who have committed
themselves to a lot of work on behalf of the
temple. Actually, only seven are part of a “progressive” line; the others do not “move up” at
the new year. The elected line includes the Potentate, Chief Rabban, Assistant Rabban, High
Priest & Prophet, Oriental Guide, Treasurer
and Recorder. The Treasurer and Recorder
do not move up at the end of the year, and,
of course, the Potentate moves to the position
of Past Potentate. Five others, the 1st and 2nd
Ceremonial Master, Marshal, Captain of the
Guard, and the Outer Guard, are appointed
to one-year terms in their respective offices.
They do not progress to the next higher office
each year when a new Potentate is installed.
They are frequently reappointed by the incoming Potentate. The Director and Chaplain are
also appointed for an indefinite term, and do
not move up.
The top five members of the Divan, the Potentate, Chief Rabban, Assistant Rabban, High
Priest and Prophet, and Oriental Guide, are
elected each year at the Annual Meeting of the
temple. As a general rule, the advancement is
pretty nearly automatic, although the Nobility
could replace any one of them through the elective process. In practice, it is very difficult to
convince the nobility to reject a Noble that has
spent many years in leadership of the Shrine,
although others have been known to run against
a Divan member for a position. The top seven
members of the Divan, including the Treasurer
and Recorder, constitute the Temple’s Board of
Directors in accordance with the bylaws of the
Imperial Council. The Potentate serves as the
equivalent of Chairman of the Board.
Three members of the progressive Divan are appointed by the Potentate each year.
Those three are the First Ceremonial Master,
the Second Ceremonial Master, and the Marshal. The Captain of the Guard and the Outer
Guard are also appointed by the incoming
Potentate, but do not automatically advance
to the next higher position with the new year.
The incoming Potentate always appoints one
new member of the Divan, the Marshal, each
year. He may also appoint a Noble to replace
any other member of the appointive Divan for
any reason, or for no reason. The power to

appoint the lower five members of the Divan
rests solely with the Potentate.
Of the non-progressive Divan, the Recorder and Treasurer are elected each year
by the Nobility at the Annual Meeting. Any
Noble in good standing may run against an incumbent in these offices at his own volition.
The Director and Chaplain are appointed by
the Potentate, and he alone is responsible for
the appointment.
The Divan operates much like the managerial line of any other organization. Financial matters are under the watchful eye of the
“Board of Directors,” which is defined by the
Imperial By-laws as the elected Divan officers: Potentate, Chief Rabban, Assistant Rabban, High Priest & Prophet, Oriental Guide,
Treasurer, and Recorder. The Potentate is the
CEO of Ararat. He makes the decisions, but
he depends on the other Divan members for
guidance and counsel. He also delegates tasks,
responsibility and authority to other Divan
members, and sometimes to ordinary Nobles.
He is the one who must give permission for
everything that happens under the name or
symbols of Ararat Shrine.
The Annual Ararat Shrine Circus is delegated to the Chief Rabban, who, in turn,
delegates tasks to others to make the Circus a
success. It is only fitting that the Chief Rabban
be in charge here, because the proceeds of the
Circus make up a good portion of the budget
for his year as Potentate.
The Assistant Rabban is in charge of the
Auto Swap Meets. He, too, calls on many of
us, Divan and Nobility alike, to make them a
success. The Swap Meets are also a very important part of the annual operating budget for
Ararat Shrine.
In the absence of a Chaplain, the High
Priest and Prophet is in charge of the spiritual
well-being of the temple. The Oriental Guide
is responsible for tending at the altar and overseeing the ballot box during voting on petitions and at elections. The Treasurer watches
over the finances of our temple including our
operating funds, investments, and our reserved
and committed funds.
The Recorder oversees all of the fraternal
aspects of our temple. He is also responsible
for accounting for the receipts and disbursements of the temple and for filing the many
reports that are required.
The First and Second Ceremonial Masters are in charge of the planning and execution of our ceremonials, where new Nobles are
created and introduced to the mysteries and
wonders of the Shrine. The Director directs
the activities of Ararat Temple and is in charge
of the Second Section of Ceremonials. The
Marshal is the escort for visitors, “marshals”
the Divan and the Nobility into the right place
at the appropriate times, and conducts visiting nobles and those wishing to address the
Nobility to the Potentate.
The Captain of the Guard tends the Inner
Door during tiled meetings while the Outer
Guard acts as a Tyler at the Outer Door. The
Chaplain is the spiritual leader and counselor
for the temple. He offers prayer, helps us remember the departed, and keeps us on the moral path. In essence, he watches over all of us.
Most of the Divan members serve as Liaison officers to several Units and Clubs, and
all of them are responsible for “other duties as
assigned.” Each of them is required to always
hold the best interests of Ararat and the Shrine
uppermost in their actions and decisions.
The Divan is a group of Nobles, who
work tirelessly for the good of the Temple, and
they do it all for the love of the Shrine. They
are not paid, nor do they get an expense account. Occasionally, they get a free meal from
a Unit or Club, and sometimes, when they are
required to go to a conference, the Imperial
Shrine pays part of the tab. Sometimes. but
not often, the Temple pays a part of the Nobles
travel expenses. On the other hand, the Noble
pays for travel, lodging, meals, and all of the
dresses for his Lady.
All in all, the Divan is a group of Nobles that give up eight years and a pocketful
of money to the benefit of Ararat. They do it
for free, because they love the Shrine, and because they are willing to shoulder an immense
responsibility. They are your friends.

Shrine Club
News

H
ello Nobles and Ladies. If you are a
Northlander we need YOU. We are a
great bunch of guys with a WONDERFUL wives group who meet once a month for
good food and fellowship.
On June 5th we had our regular meeting
at the VFW in Claycomo (right there beside
Stroud’s). We started the evening at 5:30 PM
with a social hour and then at 6:30 PM had an
excellent fried chicken dinner with mashed potatoes and cream gravy, green beans, plus several salads and dessert. Wow, what a feast! Next
month please come on out, enjoy a meal with
us and have some great fellowship.
Prior to dinner President Bobbie White led
us in prayer and then Noble Dave McLaughlin led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Due to
a minor oops we didn’t have a drawing this
month but the Ladies assured us we would have
a drawing next month and they are pretty sure
whoever wins will enjoy it immensely. Thanks
Ladies for all your efforts.
President White opened the meeting at
7:15 PM. We were fortunate to have Noble Tom
Burke sitting in with us as Ambassador as our
own Ambassador was tied up at work. It was
good to have you there Tom. And as always we
welcomed our Chief Rabban Wayne Spencer.
Thanks for being there Sir.
We still seem to have some illness issues
going around. Bert & Rogene had to head to
Iowa for some family medical issues and a few
others were out for the night. Norm it was good
to see you and your lovely Lady again.
We then had a very short business meeting. Our Secretary was still at work cracking
down on the bad guys and several of our officers were missing, so no reports from them.
We were then advised of an upcoming special event for Compass Lodge. On August 18,
2012 they will be holding a special closed Installation of Officers / Fundraiser for their new
building. There will be members of St. Mary’s
Lodge of England, the United Grand Lodge of
England, the Grand Lodge of Kansas present,
and our own Most Worshipful Brother John
Hess will serve as the Installing Master. The
installation will be followed by a three course
catered English Festive Board to include appropriate spirits for the event. Contact any
Compass member for a flyer regarding this very
special event.
Our Acting Ambassador Tom Burke then
filled us in on upcoming events at the Temple
including the fact there is always a need for help
at Bingo on Thursday nights, and reminded us
to please try and support each other’s functions.
If you can attend another unit or club’s dinner
or dance please do so. We have to take care of
each other.
Our Chief Rabban then gave us some
information about the St Louis Hospital and
shared some excellent information regarding the restaurant. He ended his portion of
the meeting with a very special presentation.
He presented Noble Howard Silvers with his
Crown of Honor Jewels Number 108 through
118. Way to go Howard. Thanks for your service Sir.
We truly miss not seeing many of our old
friends from the club. If you haven’t been to a
meeting in a while come on back and see us.
We miss your company and need you to keep
our club active and functional.
Noble President White also asks if you
can please make it to the Temple Meetings and
wear your Northland Shirt or Fez.
Again, if you want some good food and
want to meet some good people come on by our
next meeting, July 3rd at the VFW in Claycomo. Come join us for dinner before the meeting

Club

he Lafayette County Shrine Club met
June 14 at the Victorian Peddlar in Lexington for a delicious meal of prime rib or
chicken salad sandwiches with tossed salad and
dessert. There were 25 Lafayette County Shriners and ladies present for the meal. President
Delmar Dothage welcomed Ambassador Curt
Karnes and his Lady Susan, Assistant Director
of Uniformed Units Tim Rechterman and his
Lady Linda, and Liaison Henry McDaniel, Jr.,
and his Lady Christine.
President Dothage presided at the meeting. W.N. Gray read the minutes of the May
meeting. Bernie Miller gave the Treasurer’s
Report. President Dothage reminded members
of upcoming events. The club voted to donate
$25 to the Nascar Mouse Event to be held June
23. Names were given to six mice on the team.
It was voted to go dark during July and August
and begin meeting again in September.
Kenny Nadler gave the hospital report
about a child that will be going into the Shrine

Show was a success making approximately
$1,800. The Ararat Temple Restaurant made
$3,500 in May which is good news. He indicated the staff is really trying hard to make it
a success. He also mentioned the new noble
that recently joined at the Spring Ceremonial
getting a $5,000 donation for the circus. He
presented Crown Jewel awards to Delmar Dothage, Bernie Miller and Tim Rechterman, and
to Ken Sisemore and Ernie Wills who were unable to attend.
It was an enjoyable evening.

June Temple Meeting Notes

I
llustrious Sir Richard Floyd called the June, 2012, meeting to order at 7:35 PM, June 13, 2012 in
the Frank S. Land Ballroom.
Assistant Rabban Maurice Camerlynck informed the Captain of the Guard that the Potentate
was about to open Ararat Temple for business, who, in turn, informed the Outer Guard.
Captain of the Guard Jerry Grimes reported that our Temple was under a double and trusty
guard.
Chief Rabban Wayne Spencer looked around and informed the Potentate that our Temple was
free from jeopardy as there were none present save members of our order. The Potentate replied
that “It is well.”
Oriental Guide Steve Johnson prepared the Altar.
In the absence of Chaplain Loyd Gentry, High Priest and Prophet Clarence Kirby remembered
our Nobles who had been visited by the Black Camel and gave the invocation.
The Legion of Honor presented the colors.
The assembled Nobles, led by the Chief Rabban, recited the Shrine Pledge of Allegiance.
Noble Jacque Mote then led the assembled Nobles in singing the National Anthem.
Recorder Dan Smothers did not read the Minutes of the April meeting, do to a previous motion waiving the reading of minutes for the entire term of Illustrious Sir Richard.
Illustrious Sir Richard then read a very impressive letter from a Noble from Akdar Shrine,
who had encountered car trouble on a Friday evening here in Kansas City. He couldn’t find a mechanic at that time on a Friday night, so, at about 7:00 pm, he called Ararat. Sharon Elam was still
working, although her day supposedly ends at 6:00 pm, and she referred our Akdar Noble to Ararat
Noble Dave. Noble Dave owns a tow truck service, and he could help. Lady Mary could help, too,
and she did. She offered her car for the use of the visiting Noble. His travel trailer was hooked to
a Noble’s vehicle, and towed. Noble Donnie and Lady Jordie told the formerly unlucky Noble to
make camp in their back yard. A local car dealer said that he could fix the truck on Saturday, for a
nominal fee that was way too high. Noble Dave and Noble Donnie fixed the truck in about an hour.
Lady Jordie fixed dinner. The night was spent over a campfire in Noble Donnie’s back yard. On
Saturday, a very pleased visiting Noble, now feeling very lucky and proud to be a Noble, began his
trip home. He was happy.
Illustrious Sir Richard presented Citations to Noble’s Donnie and Dave. The Potentate said
“Nobles, that’s what we do.” Kinda makes you feel really proud to be a Noble, doesn’t it?
Potentate Richard presented 1st Crown of Honor Jewels to several Nobles, and high-number
jewels to a group of hard working Nobles, and to a number of Past Potentates.

Sir John Hay, P.P., and seconded by Noble Woody Woodward. The motion passed and the Bylaw
changes were approved.
No Visitors were registered.
At least 15 newly created Nobles were present and recognized.
The Pipes & Drums made a donation to the Hospital Committee.
The Jackson County Shrine Club, Motor Corps, Directors Staff, Provost Club, and Amateur
Radio Club made donations to the General Fund.
The Amateur Radio Club also made a donation to the Hospital Transportation Fund.
Noble Dave Gilbert made a donation to the Distressed Nobles Fund.
The “Warsaw Truman Lodge Bunch” made a donation to the General Fund.
The Greeters made a donation to the General Fund, but noted that the “check is in the mail.”
The Patrol contributed to the General Fund, and also made a donation to help pay for the
Ceremonial Breakfast.
Chief Rabban Wayne Spencer reported that collections for the Circus are going great, and
presented a Jacket and a gift card to Noble Don Shaw.
Oriental Guide Steve Johnson reported that the Gun Show was successful. He thanked Nobles
Gary Budzinski, Larry Riggs, and Mark Hoefer, and an un-named Divan Member, along with a lot
of helpers that just came out to do whatever needed to be done.
Wings of Mercy Golf Tournament Chairman Mike DeGraff told us that the Tournament was
a success, and raised a lot of money. He thanked the Provost, the Cooking Team, and the Hospital
Committee. Most of the cash prize winners donated their winnings back to the Hospital Committee.
First Ceremonial Master Nick Baldi exclaimed “What a Ceremonial!!” He thanked everyone,
marveled at how everything came together, and thanked everyone again.
Noble Dick Newport spoke of the Potentate’s Golf Outing, which is only 3-1/2 months away.
The event will be held at the Fred Arbanas Golf Course in Lee’s Summit. Remember, Ladies are
welcome, and the public is welcome.
High Priest & Prophet Clarence Kirby declared that the Onion project went great! Now, please
send your money in to the office.
Bingo Chairman Buck Johnson told us that Bingo is doing pretty good, even though the big
pot was won, and attendance is down. The usual contribution of Bingo receipts was made to the
General Fund. The players also donated $818.00 to the Hospital Transportation Fund.
Hospital Chairman Ed Stowell told us that a young man with burns was transported from
Children’s Mercy Hospital by air, but no further information is available.
Membership Chairman Rod McGrath took the stage, thanked everyone for help at the great
ceremonial. We will have another Masonic Unity Night on Wednesday, October 17.
Parade Chairman Don Pittier spoke of a “pretty good” parade in Warsaw. Noble Don also
reported that Noble Jim Runyan is improving in rehab. His birthday was June 25.
The CSSA Kick-off Party will be August 3rd. CSSA will be August 9-11 in Cedar Rapids.
Noble Harry Marshall won the 50/50 drawing and donated his winnings to the General Fund.

for the month ending May 31. That is much better than last year!
Proposed changes to our Bylaws have been published in the Shrine News, and copies are

reetings from Blue Springs Shrine Club and all of its members who are alive and kicking.
We have a President, Noble James Gargotta, assisted by lovely First Lady Gail who are
really moving our club and keeping it interesting and entertaining for all its members and
guests. Yes, that does include you, because all Shriners and their Ladies are invited as guests of
our club. So why don’t you get off of the couch or that easy chair and come out and see for yourself just how much fun you can have being a Shriner.
As Shriners we always have projects and activities to participate in. Our most recent project
was to sell those delicious Vidalia onions. All clubs and uniformed units were allotted a certain
quota to sell with the club retaining a certain portion of the proceeds for their treasury, which is a
good way to add money for our club’s activities. I’m happy to tell you that Blue Springs Shrine
Club has already sold our quota and we are in good shape financially.
On Monday, May 21st we had “Ladies Night Out,” which meant that the Ladies got to pick
and choose where the club was going to eat, so they chose Bob Evans in Blue Springs. We were
royally treated by the folks at Bob Evans.
Thank you to Noble Charles Bonner and Lady Bobbie for hosting the Fish Fry for our club on
June 24th at their home in Lake Lotawana.
On Saturday, August 25th our club will attend the T-Bones Baseball game. It should be a
great time.
Noble Phillip Wendt is gaining on his health and we look forward to his returning to our club
meetings. Our Secretary, Noble Dale Titus is limping along, but you don’t hear him complain.
Noble Dale does a fantastic job as our club Secretary and is very much appreciated.
Our good buddy Noble Jerry White came down with a case of shingles, a knee problem, and
a bone spur in his foot. We wish Noble Jerry the very best for a speedy recovery.
Here are some pictures of our club in action. You can see for yourself our handsome Nobles
and pretty Ladies, so why don’t you come and join us at our next meeting. It is on the 4th Monday
night of the month, and we meet in the American Legion Hall in beautiful Blue Springs on 7 Hwy,
just north of the 7 Hwy and 40 Hwy junction.
That’s all for now. I’m going to leave some for the next time. Have a good summer and I hope
to see you at our next get-together.

William and Frances Huff. His Dad was
serving in WWII at the time, and when
Leonard was three months old his Dad
was a casualty in Italy.
When Leonard was age 5 and Noble
Bill Lutman was age 4, their parents, Byron Lutman and Frances Huff were married and became the Dad and Mom who
raised them. Leonard and Bill have a bond that can’t be broken.
Noble Huff graduated from Morgan County R2 High School, and entered the Army in 1966.
Leonard served in the Combat Engineers, including a tour in Vietnam. After his military tour was
finished, Noble Huff met and married the love of his life, Sue. They raised 3 sons, and were blessed
with many grandchildren and great grand-children. They had 42 wonderful years together until
Sue’s passing in December 2011.
Leonard worked for Yellow Freight as a driver for almost 20 years, and then Midway Ford
Truck for 21 years. He retired to be home and care for Sue.
Noble Huff is a member of Lodge #76 in Independence, MO, and became a Shriner in the
1999 Fall Ceremonial. He entered the Provost Club line in 2000 and was President in 2005. He
served under Noble Marvin Cass and Noble Bill Lutman as Assistant Provost Marshal, and was the
Temple Commander for several years. He is a Lifetime Member of the Warsaw Shrine Club, and a
member of the Corvette Shrine Club.

ay our marvelous Creator bless and meet all of your needs. Greetings to all of our membership and brother Shriners and all of our Ladies. A special thank you for the volunteer
core and faithful patrons that make our special events and monthly fundraisers possible.
You are truly remarkable people. For those who keep this club running by the day by day volunteerism of your time and efforts, the club thanks you and does not exist without dedication like
yours. This President is proud to serve and be a part of the Sedalia Shrine Club because you make
it the success story that it is.
Our month kicks off with a Breakfast the first Saturday and our volunteer crew and patrons
have turned it into a very successful fundraiser. Come in and enjoy a delicious breakfast for $6.00
and catch up with the latest goings on. Kudos for the Breakfast Crew.
Remember, the State Fair is practically upon us and we are short of volunteers on our volunteer Fair Stand workers’ sign up schedule. This is one of our yearly club fundraisers and we need
“you” to make it possible. You will find it posted in the Pro Shop by the T.V. The Fair runs from
August 9th to the 19th. We run four shifts 24 hours a day for the duration of the Fair.
Our August Saturday Breakfast will be the Les Webb Memorial Bloody Mary Breakfast
and tickets will be available at the club, in the Bar, from our membership and from Mrs. Webb
herself. Proceeds go to the St. Louis Shrine Hospital.
If you have time to help clean the Shrine Stand at the Fairgrounds please get in touch with
Ron Hinkle and we’ll get together for a work day. All help is appreciated.
Our golf course is in full swing and all it needs is you. Friday Seniors meet at 12:30 pm and
tee off at 1:00 pm. The course is open daily from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. Our course and Prop Shop
volunteers are dedicated to making your golfing experience a pleasant one.
The Bar is open from 3:00 pm - ? Tuesday thru Sunday so come in for some good fellowship
and your favorite libations. Check the calendar for upcoming events.
July’s Membership Dinner will feature Don Weaver’s ribs so plan to attend and enjoy some
good barbeque smoked ribs July 26th.
Remember our sick and disabled in your prayers. Pray often for the safety of those in harms
way, who serve this great nation. Don’t forget to thank them for their service.

A First Month to Remember

W
hen my husband said he was interested in becoming a Shriner I thought it was pretty
cool but I really didn’t know much about the Shrine. At the end of April we got introduced to the organization at the Unity Shrine event. The Arch presentation was really
interesting and the hospital presentation brought tears to my eyes, but the star of the show was a
little boy named Willie. His story and perseverance really hit home due to the fact that we have
young children close to his age. I knew after this night that this was a cause that was more than
worthy of our time.
A few weeks later we found a fraternal experience unlike any I have ever experienced; we
were welcomed and felt a connection with other families at the Pub Crawl. From learning more
about the hospitals to meeting people at all the different units and clubs this was a social experience like no other. The next day I attended the ladies luncheon and met some amazing women and
had a wonderful time at the fashion show. I was given the honor later that afternoon to adorn my
husband with his fez. Since that fez hit his head he has hit the ground running.
My husband immediately joined the Jackson County Shrine Club and has been heavily participating, from riding mini bikes, enjoying a fish fry, or just having an adult beverage and shooting a
game of pool. At his first Club meeting we had the privilege of seeing the Circus presentation, and
I knew this was an opportunity for us to work together to help Ararat Shrine. The circus has been
a family tradition for many years and our kids have so many of the toys and programs autographed
by clowns we lost count. My husband has been a strong member of the IBEW local union 124 for
almost 6 years now and due to his hard work and dedication to the union cause was able to solicit
a Gold Corporate Sponsorship for the Ararat Shrine Circus.
Just recently we took a family trip to St. Louis to watch the Royals at the new Busch Stadium
and we decided to add a hospital tour to our trip. We were given a tour by a Moolah Shriner along
with two couples from Abou Ben Adhem Shrine. The experience was a tough one for me since
we had our two small children with us. The capabilities of this hospital are just astonishing; our
tour guide kept saying that this hospital fixes children. The pictures of the kids going from barely
capable of walking or missing digits or extremities or having scoliosis to being almost perfectly
normal, fully functioning young adults is a miracle.
This experience made my husband and I both realize how fortunate we truly are, especially
when my kids were trying on prosthetics and one fit my three year old son perfect. As we work
together to continue getting sponsorships we have never been closer as a family nor have we ever
been prouder. Thank you to the Shriners for making us feel like a part of your fraternity.

aline County Shrine Club has had a huge May after a rather uneventful winter. We want to
thank each and every one that showed up to participate in our 6th annual All Shrine Parade
in Marshall. This year’s parade was a great success and we hope everyone who came enjoyed themselves as much as we enjoyed having you here.
It is so wonderful to have so much local support for the parade including Marshall’s leadership who promotes the parade and provides so many services. We also want to express our thanks
to Wood & Huston Bank that provides live on-site radio coverage over the two hour period prior to
the parade, and also for the continued support of our local Budweiser distributor who has been so
generous every year to the parade.
Prior to the parade a Cold Sands was held
at our local Masonic Center where we welcomed Charles Goodman to the wonderful
world of Shrine. Noble Charlie will be a great
addition to the craft.
Our club also had a very successful onion season and we want to congratulate our top
seller Noble Ed Harper. Thanks to all who sold
and those who manned the stand at Walmart.
Our parade unit the Flying Barstools blew
the cobs out of the barstools at the Richmond
parade and had a great time doing it. We now
look forward to the fun parade season ahead.
We look forward to seeing everyone at Warsaw.
Our quarterly club meeting was held May
17 and we were honored to have Chief Rabban
Wayne Spencer, High Priest & Prophet Clarence Kirby and Ambassador Les Stewart in
attendance. The meeting was enhanced by an
outstanding Catfish Fry put on by Noble Ronnie Tennill accented by many great side dishes
by our wonderful Shrine Ladies. Everyone
who attended left full of fish and enjoyed great
fellowship.

Ladies. The First Lady, Linda Floyd,
joined us and told us of some upcoming activities. The centerpieces were vases on
“pink” netting with a yellow mum inside. Roses were presented to the birthday ladies, Donna
Morgan, Phyllis Hunter and Rita Kirwan.

A Message from the Imperial Potentate
Greetings my fellow Nobles,
As you know, the Shriners Hospitals for Children national advertising
and public relations campaign is underway.
Through television commercials, online ads,
direct mail and public relations efforts, we are
increasing awareness of the special work we do,
which we believe will eventually drive donations,
increase patient referrals and strengthen our
reputation in the medical community and beyond.
An important element of our multiyear
campaign is search engine marketing (SEM),
which promotes Shriners Hospitals for Children
by raising our visibility when people search the
Internet. Given the pervasiveness of the Internet
in people’s health care research and decision making, a strong search engine
presence is imperative. Our advertising and marketing partners began an
SEM campaign in March, and results from the first eight weeks are extremely
positive. Here is a quick snapshot of what we’ve accomplished so far:
• Visits to the Shriners Hospitals for Children website are up 25%.
• SEM has driven nearly 62,000 visits in the first eight weeks.
• E-newsletter signups and website registrations are up 11.71% and 11.16% respectively.
• Downloads of our application for care document are up 11.58%.
• Donation transactions are up 3.72%.
• Total donations are up 10.02%.
I will continue to update you on the awareness campaign we launched Monday,
June 11 and how this larger integrated initiative is benefiting Shriners
