Senior Center Newsletter OFFICE FOR OLDER ADULTS 7327 Avon Belden Road • North Ridgeville, OH 44039 Phone: 440-353-0828 MAY - JUNE 2016 ISSUE OFFICE HOURS: OFFICE HOURS: What is a Volunteer? Monday - Friday Monday8:00 - Friday: AM -p.m. 4:30 PM a.m. -84:30 The dictionary describes a volunteer as someone who gives freely of themselves with no anticipation of monetary gain. Volunteers also come in every shape, size, nationality, income level and age. Here at the Senior Center we have volunteers from 9 to 95 who offer their time, talents and smiles to help our older adults. We also have Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and just about every philanthropic organization in the City of North Ridgeville and surrounding areas we serve who help us out. Some members of council, city employees and our Mayor all volunteer at the North Ridgeville Office for Older Adults. We have many people, “behind the scenes” as they say and I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Carole Hamlin who not only drives for Meals-On-Wheels, but also proof reads the newsletter (as her father did before her) for any errors - believe me, there are plenty before Carole gets her hand on the copy editing! Of course we have our Advisory Board members and our Chairman, Tom Hejduk, who not only attends the board meetings but other meetings that may spring up in regards to the smooth operation of the Senior Center. There are so many who help us make the North Ridgeville Office for Older Adults (Senior Center) such a wonderful place to come for good food, activities, assistance and fellowship. To all of you, we appreciate everything you do and offer a very heartfelt... THANK YOU! PAGE 2 OFFICE FOR OLDER ADULTS, NORTH RIDGEVILLE, OHIO THOUGHTS FROM RITA Hello Everyone, Wonderful, wonderful spring is upon us! While this past winter has not been as cold (or snowy) as the last several, it’s still wonderful to know we shouldn’t have anymore days with temperatures below 32 degrees, any days with a chance of snow (well, hopefully) and no worries (not too much anyway) that any flowers that peak through the ground will have a chance of frost. I know we are not quite there, but it’s right around the corner! Sunny days, flowers blooming, the kids out of school and summer-time fun is right around the corner! Here at the Senior Center, an annual right of passage to summer is our annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon which, we hope, is always a fun afternoon of good food, prizes and hearts full of gratitude and thankfulness from all the staff to all our volunteers for all they do throughout the year. Last year we “Rolled out the Red Carpet” and treated our very special volunteers for a special afternoon on the red carpet. This year, we want everyone to know that our volunteers “Light up our Lives!” We will treat them to some wonderful surprises to show them how their light shines through not only to us, the staff, but to all the people whose lives they touch each day here at the Senior Center. We have, as of this writing, over 140 volunteers who help us in a variety of ways and hundreds more who are not registered as our “official” volunteers. These individuals help us by volunteering at the Senior Center through their organization, school or scout troop. It is not just the city (as you read on the cover page) that keeps us sustainable throughout the year, but the hundreds of individuals, groups and organizations who volunteer countless hours to the North Ridgeville Office for Older Adults (Senior Center). In fact, our 140 plus volunteers who help out on a daily basis by driving for Meals-on-Wheels, serving breakfasts/brunch or lunches, help get the newsletter ready for mailing, our receptionists, craft ladies, etc. provided over 5,000 volunteer hours and assistance to us in 2015. This does not include the volunteer hours spent helping to serve and bake for our Spaghetti Dinners, those who volunteer to help keep our outside area cleaned, or the scouts who collect items and then stuff Christmas stockings. Then there are many volunteers who constantly think about our older adults by making cards/placemats/napkin rings over all the Holidays and so much more. The hours and projects are endless and May is our month to say a heartfelt Thank You to each and everyone of you for all you do! MAY- JUNE NEWSLETTER PAGE 3 GREETINGS FROM MAYOR DAVE City Council, the Administration and our department heads spent many weeks in February and March tweaking and tuning the city’s 2016 appropriations’ budget. This is a long and tedious process as Council and the Administration listen to the financial needs of all our departments. We then take a look at the big picture, anticipated revenue for the city and what we can appropriate to keep each department functioning as cost effective as possible while accommodating each department’s additional needs as our city continues to grow. Each year I am very impressed with every department and their thought process prior to appropriations. While we certainly would like to give them everything on their list, that is not possible. City Hall Hours: Mon. - Fri.: 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Closed: Memorial Day May 30, 2016 I am very pleased this year that we were able to provide funding to the Senior Center for the much needed new awnings on the south side of the building. Both awnings will be replaced by early summer and Rita has also indicated you will be seeing a new color to change things up a bit. The kitchen will also receive an ice machine so they don’t have to make ice cubes by using a tray or running up to McDonalds for a bag or two. Ice will be flowing more freely this summer! As your mayor it is my pleasure to be able to provide these little extra things to our Office for Older Adults. Your large volunteer base at the Senior Center helps out tremendously in allowing the Administration and City Council to provide extra funding to your department. Because of our wonderful volunteers, we are able to provide such a wide range of services and programs through our Office for Older Adults. Without our volunteers we would either have to hire additional staff or cut back on services due to the lack of personnel. According to Independent Sector, the national average for compensation for volunteer time is $23.07 per hour. Last year, our volunteers who help at the Senior Center each week volunteered over 5,000 hours. This does not include volunteers who help from organizations and groups or those who drop off baked goods, cards, etc. and worked countless hours at home to provide a little something special for our older adults. If we counted these hours, our number would more than double. Your importance does not go unnoticed and you are a very important aspect in keeping our Senior Center running smoothly. We are all very grateful to all our volunteers who help make the Senior Center such a integral part of our community - Thank you! North Ridgeville V.F.W. Post 9871 will accept your old and torn flags. The Post located at 6805 Lear Nagle Road has a drop-off box located right behind their building. Look for the box marked “Old and Torn Flags” and drop yours inside so they can be disposed of properly. Please join us in honoring those deceased members of our military forces. We appreciate all their sacrifice and salute them for their service to our country. FRIENDSHIP ANIMAL PROTECTIVE LEAGUE Do you need a pet to keep you company? If you are aged 60 or older, you can adopt any cat 8 years and older from Friendship APL for free. It’s a win-win for everyone. You give love to an older cat that is lonely, and you get love and companionship in return! Please keep in mind, all pets need care (litter boxes cleaned daily), food, litter, medical care (make sure you can afford it) and much attention and love! VISIT COMMUNITY CARE FOR “SALAD WEDNESDAY!” If you are 60 or over, you are invited to stop by Community Care every Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. throughout the year and pick up some fresh salad items. This community event is open to anyone over 60, regardless of income. They have a wonderful selection of salad and salad items. Please stop by Community Care which located on Center Ridge Road behind Arby’s. As you get ready to do your yard work, don’t forget to visit The Rock Pile Garden Center at 900 Nagel Road. Mention the North Ridgeville Office for Older Adults and they will donate 5% of your purchase back to us! A big thank you to John and Joann Major for supporting us through this program.
