Dear HSSM Supporter,
Over many years the Humane Society of Southwestern Michigan has established a wonderful program
for rescuing homeless and unwanted cats and dogs, providing food, shelter and medical care, and then
finding them forever homes. HSSM has brought much pleasure and enlightenment to the people, cats
and dogs in Berrien County, Michigan. HSSM is the only no-kill shelter in Berrien County. Last year
alone, the lives of more than 400 cats and dogs were saved – a testament to HSSM’s commitment to
being a no-kill shelter. Recently, under the leadership of Executive Director, Jill Svoboda, HSSM has
been recognized for its Herculean efforts to rescue helpless animals in our community. One example,
among the many, is HSSM’s hard work to rescue, rehabilitate and adopt out twenty Chihuahua mix dogs
from a hazardous hoarding situation.
HSSM’s community benefit does not stop with rescuing and re-homing cats and dogs. Rather, HSSM
offers lost and found services for owners to reclaim lost animals, spay and neuter initiatives to help
address population issues, and educational programs addressing topics such as humane care, anticruelty, benefits of spay and neuter, animal behavior and training. The primary goal of these services is
to educate the public concerning responsible pet ownership. Secondarily, through public visibility, HSSM
promotes the health and welfare of cats and dogs in our community.
Today, HSSM is facing a critical juncture in its history: timely replacement of its worn out shelter facility.
HSSM began using its original shelter in 1964. A “new wing” was added in 1989. Existing shelter
capacity has been exceeded, and the shelter is rapidly deteriorating as a result of inadequate design and
the heavy wear and tear stemming from shelter operations. Recent acquisition of five acres of land on
M-139 in Royalton Township, just north of John Beers Road in Royalton Township, has given HSSM an
exciting opportunity to grow and enhance its community involvement. Construction of a larger, modern
shelter will add capacity, increase efficiency and performance, and provide HSSM with the ability to save
more cats and dogs in Berrien County and to provide them with a better quality of life while they await
their forever homes.

DOG WING
The Humane Society of Southwestern Michigan is the largest No-Kill
Shelter and Adoption Center in Berrien County. Our dogs make the
Shelter their home until they are adopted. Sometimes their stay is
short, but other times it is long. Please help us build our new facility
with modern and spacious kennels that will afford dogs the quality of
life they deserve as they wait for their forever homes.
The dog wing will consist of a long hall with 25 kennels on each side
and common rooms in the middle. Each of the 50 kennels will be
equipped with raised beds for comfort, and will have both indoor and
outdoor quarters so that dogs have access to inside coziness and
outside fresh air and potty facilities. The indoor and outdoor quarters
will be separated by a gating system which, when open, will provide
dogs with freedom to go outside for fresh air and potty breaks, and,
when closed, can be used to segregate dogs for easy and safe
kennel cleaning. Solid block kennel walls and common rooms lining
the hallway will keep dogs from seeing each other, and will promote
safety while minimizing noise and disruption. Common rooms will
consist of two separate Meet & Greet Rooms, a Dog Washing &
Volunteer Station, Food Preparation & Laundry Facility, Veterinarian
Office, and Storage. There will be a separate Puppy Room to provide
safe quarters for the tiny ones. Eight large Outdoor Doggy Play
Areas will offer safe, secure room to socialize and exercise.
Our new shelter is designed to provide our dogs with the best care
and highest quality of life possible while they reside with us. It will
also provide visitors with a safe and secure environment while they
spend time selecting a new companion.

CAT WING
The Humane Society of Southwestern Michigan is the largest
No-Kill Shelter and Adoption Center in Berrien County. As
such, our cats live at the Shelter until they are adopted. Some
stay with us for weeks, and other stay for years, but they all find
forever homes.
Cats are very special animals and deserve nothing but the
best. Our new shelter will provide 6 bright and spacious
Community Cat Rooms that will house five to eight cats each.
Each Community Cat Room will have a bay window that
provides plenty of light, warmth, perches and fresh air. The
cats will be able to look outdoors, and people will be able to
look in at them. Community Cat Rooms will be well stocked
with toys, climbing systems and areas to lounge. A special Cat
Play Room with glass front will provide space to romp and
socialize. 42 Individual Kennels will also be available for cats
that need to be alone. There will be two separate Meet & Greet
Rooms for visitation, play and socialization. The Cat Wing will
have its own Storage Room and Food Preparation & Laundry
Facility.
Our new shelter design provides efficient, comfortable and safe
accommodations. It is a harmonious blend of form and
function.

MEDICAL
Medical care is a critical part of shelter operations. Each animal is
vaccinated, wormed and given a heartworm test or feline leukemia test
before being offered for adoption. All sick animals are removed from
the general population until healthy enough to return.
The new shelter will have a well-equipped Main Veterinarian Room for
the Veterinarians who examine and treat the cats and dogs living at the
shelter. It will be the main office and work space for the staff
Veterinarian Assistant, who is responsible for the daily medical care of
the animals. A Secondary Veterinarian Room located in the Dog Wing
will be used for follow up examinations and administering recurring
medications.
To insure a healthy population, each animal is examined for obvious
problems on arrival. Newly admitted animals are housed in the
Isolation Ward until reclaimed by their owner or the statutory waiting
period expires. Sick animals are housed in the Medical Ward where
they receive all necessary medical care until healthy. New arrivals and
sick animals are segregated from the general population, and separate
heating, cooling, water, and air exchange systems are necessary to
maintain isolation.
The shelter staff makes every effort to put the health of animals
foremost, and to prevent cross-contamination.

ADMINISTRATION,
TRAINING & EDUCATION
The Humane Society of Southwestern Michigan has two (2)
Information Centers, an Education Center and 2 Training
Rooms.
One Information Center is the Main Lobby where Adoptions
occur. The Main Lobby is centrally located and equipped with
a large reception and adoption desk, a handy information board
that shows animals currently available for adoption, an
information center where literature is displayed, a visitor
seating area, and a boutique where pet-related items, clothing
and accessories are sold. Also included in this area are the
Executive Director’s and staff offices and public restrooms.
The other Information Center is the Intake Lobby where
animals are dropped off. The Intake Lobby, located just
outside the Main Veterinarian Room and near the Isolation and
Quarantine Wards, will be equipped with a reception desk,
seating area, and equipment to process surrendered animals.
The Shelter will be equipped with modern Education Center
consisting of a large Multipurpose Room. It will be used for
conferences and seminars, meetings, parties, and training
people and animals. The Multipurpose Room will provide a
classroom setting for educating the public concerning proper
pet care and good animal husbandry. It is conveniently located
just off the Main Lobby. In addition, there are 2 separate Dog
Training Rooms that will allow trainers to work one-on-one with
dogs to train and socialize them and improve their adoptability.
The Multipurpose Room and Dog Training Rooms will be wellequipped with necessary amenities.
