Dogs and Cats Don’t Do Math – But We Do!

Every spring brings us litters of kittens. Cats
often have litters in March and April and
account for a large percentage of our cat
population in the spring. This year we took
in the largest number of kittens in our history
during this five month period. Puppies tend
to come in during December and then again
in the spring. This year was no exception:

We currently employ four part-time staff who do an incredible job taking care of the animals
and the shelter. Our board members are all active in helping with morning kennel chores,
taking animals to the vet, keeping our cat kennels full at Petsmart in Topeka, shopping for
supplies, helping with shelter maintenance, taking animals to community events, and
fundraising. We also have a few very dedicated volunteers who work and play with our dogs
and cats, help with adoption photo books, and provide support to our staff. We are also very
fortunate to have Dr. Peggy Hensleigh help with some of our spays and neuters at the shelter.
Approximately 95% of our budget comes from donations and fundraising. Oskaloosa and Meriden
provide some financial support in return for access to the shelter for city strays.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP?
 Walk and play with a dog – help them learn simple commands
 Play with cats and help them socialize with each other
 Give a dog a bath (or a cat if you are brave)
 Help with shelter maintenance: gardening, painting, cleaning, etc
 Help with office work: phones, data entry, newsletters, etc.
 Help us during open hours showing cats and dogs to potential adopters
SPECIAL EVENTS
We participate in community events and hold special fundraisers all year long.
We always need people to help. Our six board members are very active helping
at the shelter on a daily basis and attending events and fundraisers several times
a month. Volunteering once a year for an event would help us out.

Foster a Dog or Cat
Lend A
We often have animals that could benefit from being in
Hand
a foster home. Sometimes kittens or puppies that don’t
have a mother need feeding every few hours and need to be fostered (great job for you
night owls). Even more often, we have dogs that need to be socialized in a home
setting. We also have older dogs and cats that deserve a home setting. Fostering
allows the animals to still be adopted and the costs (food, veterinary care, etc.) are
paid for by the shelter.

Without You …
we are lost, we are homeless, we are forgotten
With You …
we are rescued, we are cared for, we find new homes
Daisy and her five litter mates were discovered in a ditch – unapproachable and
very scared. A man called us for help after the puppies left the ditch and went under
his shed. Our staff spent five hours in dust, dirt and poison ivy catching puppies
that were scared and biting at everyone. All of the puppies were covered in ticks –
their ears were black with ticks. After treating them at the shelter and lots of care
and attention, the puppies are interacting with people and finding new homes.
“We wanted to update you about Daisy. She
made the ride home okay and slept through
the first night without a whimper.
Yesterday we introduced her to her new big
brother, Tucker. Although she is still timid
around Dennis and me, she is inseparable
from Tucker! She cries whenever he gets
out of her sight. And we are so proud of
Tucker – when he hears her cry he quickly
returns to her and brings her along. Thank
you for all you do! Our prayers are that her
sisters and brother will find forever homes
also.”

Nella and Ellie were four week old
kittens when they were found in a
dumpster in Valley Falls just before it was
emptied! We don’t know if somebody put
them in the dumpster or if their mother
left them there. They were brought to the
shelter. They were cleaned, given medical
care and are ready for adoptions.
Many of the cats and dogs that arrive at the shelter have been found and turned in as
strays. Sometimes owners bring in animals because they can no longer care for them or
have puppies and kittens they “can’t find homes for.” And sometimes an animal gets lost
and we are fortunate to reunite them with their owners. Whatever the reason, that animal
that comes through our doors is given food, water, shelter, medical care, a soothing voice,
a lap to sit in, a yard to play in, and most importantly a chance to find a home. Without the
Jefferson County Humane Society, many of these animals would die or be killed by a car,
another animal, or taken to an overcrowded shelter that euthanizes animals after a few
days if they aren’t adopted. Please help us continue saving lives!
