L A N C E R LEGEND THE MAGAZINE OF ST. PIUS X HIGH SCHOOL “As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God’s varied grace” (1 Peter 4:10) SPRING/SUMMER 2014 From the President It’s all about being a good steward. Anthony Gerber Over the past couple of years we have heard many Catholics talk about stewardship. What does stewardship mean exactly? If you go onto the website for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops you will see the following quote, “As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God’s varied grace” (1 Peter 4:10). Some say Catholic stewardship is one of the most misunderstood concepts in our Church today. Many assume that it means “fund-raising” or “write us another check please”. Stewardship is a way of life. It is finding ways to give back for what you have been given. It is a way of thanking God for all of His blessings by returning a portion of the time, talent, and treasure we have been given. While our schools and churches rely heavily on the financing of our stakeholders, there is more to the big picture of this all. Our schools and the Church need more than money. In order for us to continue to grow, we need people who share their talents, give of their time, and/or financially donate to the schools or Church. “You have been told, O man, what is good, and what the Lord requires of you: Only to do the right and to love goodness, and to walk humbly with your God” – Micah 6:8. Mr. Rob Roth, St. Pius X class of 1971 (featured on the front cover) is a perfect example of stewardship. He has given of his treasure by sending his children to St. Pius X and contributing/attending our special events. He has given his time by supporting his children at their activities and once again, attending our special events. Things are different now. He has introduced me to a new form of stewardship. You see, he is recently retired and was looking for something to do a day or two a week. Mr. Roth now volunteers on Tuesdays, and sometimes more than that, to help Mr. Kausler with maintenance. You may see him outside mowing the lawn, helping with the upkeep of the landscaping or he may be inside helping Mr. Kausler out with whatever is on his list of jobs to get done. Mr. Roth took on the challenge to be a steward. I challenge you all to take some time to reflect on your lives. Look at your gifts and talents and ask yourself, “How am I being a good steward?” Schools and churches are always looking for help in everything they do. No matter what phase of life you are in, there are always opportunities to be a good steward. Stewardship is in all of our hearts, we just have to answer the calling. Thank you to Mr. Rob Roth, his wife Mary, and children Jeremy’97, Kate’01, and Emily’05 for all they have done for St. Pius X High School. If you would like to volunteer your time to St. Pius X High School, please do not hesitate to contact me at 636-931-PIUS. God will bless you for your generosity a thousand fold. Mrs. DeCosty recently read an article about a school which struggled with the same issues and found this type of schedule to be a solution. After reading the artcile, having several conversations with the author of the article, and conducting an open discussion session about this with the faculty, the school has decided to make a bold change to its daily schedule. School will start at 7:50 and dismiss at 2:45. Instead of holding four lunches per day, we will all break for one hour. The entire building and back lawn will be “open” for students to eat when and where they want, meet with teachers for tutoring, and participate in club meetings. It is quite possible study groups will form and students will be working on group projects during this time as well. Students will be able to make up tests, labs and workouts as well. This hour will help students build time management skills which are so important in college life. Teachers will be given 30 minutes for lunch. The other 30 minutes are required, open door office hours. featuring St.Pius X Student Artwork We hope you enjoy the photos of St. Pius X student artwork sprinkled throughout this edition of the Lancer Legend. Parker is a member of the Church of Our Lady and volunteers for Next Step for Life and Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. He works at Busch Stadium and participates in Variety Club. Parker’s high school courseload includes college credit english, statistics, Concert Choir: honors, psychology, film, art: honors and religion. Parker earned Renaissance Honors and also the Dottie Schneider Memorial Service Scholarship during his high school career. Parker shares with us one of his favorite quotes: One of my personal favorite quotes comes from one of my favorite movies, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. The quote “ Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in awhile, you could miss it” comes at the end of the film and is a reflection on the crazy events of the movie. The quote, while coming from what some might call a cheesy eighties movie, actually has a deep meaning in my opinion and I really treasure what it means to me. “ Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in awhile, you could miss it.” I think that this is a great motto for all to live by. Life does move quickly. I am aware of this because I will soon be a senior in high school. I feel like I just started freshman year a few months ago! This quote made me realize I need to continue to make the most out of high school, even though I do not have a lot of time left. Realizing how little time we have in any phase of ours lives should motivate us to make the most out of it, which this quote suggests we do. Don’t get so caught up in the negative, try to be positive and get the most out of life. The quote can be applied to almost any situation or phase of your life you are in, rather it be high school, college, a job, a vacation, anything really. I believe one should enjoy life as much as they can, you only get one shot at it. As we all go our separate ways, may Your Spirit be with us to guide our decisions. May the experiences we have be stepping stones that build the right path for our future. As we continue our studies outside the walls of St. Pius, see that we take the values we learned into the world. We pray that we always keep a sense of perspective, and that every night we dedicate our tomorrows to living pleasing to you. This we pray in your holy name. Amen St. Pius X – pray for us Rachel Seevers Meghan Pazkiewicz, “Detached” College Search Timeline Now is the time for high school students to begin thinking about how to maximize their ten-week summer vacation. I’m all for tanning; however, maybe you could tan for one week and then do something even more productive like volunteering, internships, visiting colleges or working at a camp for the handicapped. SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS: Have you made a calendar? This calendar should set down tentative dates for college visits, ACT test dates, family events - everything - until the day you graduate from St. Pius X. With a calendar you are much more likely to do the necessary things at the right time in order to chip away at the college search process. This is THE most important thing to do now! You will not regret it! An example of a calendar is posted on the College Placement Office website. Marty Zielonko College Placement Counselor COLLEGE ACCEPTED SENIORS: When a senior is accepted to a college, it is important for the student to contact the college’s Admissions Office to inquire about In-House Scholarships. When going on a college visit, it’s a good idea to send a thank-you note to the representative who helped you. It’s the St. Pius way! Also, the Housing Deposit should be sent ASAP to assure priority on the master list. There is a special article on the College Search webpage titled, “I Got Accepted, Now What?.” It answers many questions, some of which first-time college parents may not know to ask. THE COLLEGE PLACEMENT WEBSITE: Have you clicked the College Placement Office link on the St. Pius X High School website homepage? Bryan Kelley ’98 helps me post things practically every day. Check it out. There is something for every student and parent. FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid): We received new directives for applying for federal student aid. Applications can be done ONLINE ONLY. The website is www.FAFSA.ed.gov. Be sure to obtain your “PIN” (personal identification number) from the same site in order to start and complete the process. God, you have blessed me with a beautiful life; a life that is full of many joys, but also many fears. I often find that what scares me the most in life is the unknown; when I don’t know what the future going to be like and what is going to happen. Please give me strength to face that fear, and approach all aspects of life, the known and the unknown, with courage.
