The Life Saver Spring/Summer 2016 Volume 1 / Issue 1 Saving Baby Bentley's "Broken" Heart Lives Saved to date: 3241 !!! Bentley, a sweet little 14 week old puppy (terrier/hound/lab mix), has not had the best of luck in his very short life so far. We rescued his momma and brother, Reese Cup, with the intention of finding them all wonderful new forever homes. But it has become clear that Bentley’s journey is going to take a bit more time, veterinary assistance, monetary resources and, maybe most importantly, HOPE. Bentley has a bad heart due to congenital birth defects. Surgery will give him his best option to have a long life. The surgery is not without risks but, without it, Bentley is facing a death sentence. To date, his diagnostics, hospital stay and meds have run about $1400. Bentley is scheduled for heart surgery on May 10th, 2016, which will cost $3800 to $4500. When we commit to a life, we commit FOR life. This will be the most expensive life saved to date, but look at that face! He deserves to get a chance at a wonderful life! We have raised over $5,000 to help with his expenses! Go to: http://www.saveohiostrays.org/RP_Donations.asp and designate Bentley in the shipping address or check out our GoFundMe link for donating. As founder and president, I simply want to thank the amazing team that continues to drive this success to this very day! Without the foster homes, the event volunteers, the transport drivers, the webmasters and all of this core team noted above, we would be nothing. This work, while being a labor of love, takes a village. And our village is a stunning combination of different personalities and experiences. We do not always agree, but at the end of the day, our success is largely based on the incredible ability of this team to always find a way to help each other and the animals more. 11.5 years ago, 7 of us thought we had a good idea. Over 3,200 lives later, we KNOW we have a good idea, a great model and the BEST darn volunteers in the world. I salute and love you all! Sandy Caldwell, President HAPPY ENDINGS Glorious Gloria Thanks to many months of tender loving care, patience and great vet care, Gloria went from a very sick, hairless, dumped to die dog to one beloved pup! Gloria was found abandoned in a quarry in early April on a belowfreezing day. At first we honestly didn't know how old or what mix she might be as she was a sad sight. She was so weak and sick! We nursed her back to health, but she understandably also had some separation anxiety issues which we worked on with her. This took an incredible team of dedicated volunteers! Special thanks to our amazing fosters: Patty and Terry Strohmenger, Kay Lackey (Katie's Ark Animal Training) and Kathy and Mark Crites. Gloria, for the first time in her life, now knows what it's like to be loved and cared in her amazing new forever home with Barry and Kate. We Love Our Adopters! Preface: We are nothing without these amazing foster homes. Lucy was part of a cruelty case, and she was a bit of mess. We were lucky to get her into a manners course with the prison program, then into an incredible foster home. This is their loving story of helping Lucy find her magic and the right home: Miss Lucy came to us after a horrible youth, a litter of puppies and a short stretch in prison. Ok, so she went there to learn manners, but it does make her sound tough. Lucy came in to our home scared and anxious. All the unfamiliar sights, sounds and smells were new to her and that made her nervous and uneasy. Knowing her hound sense of smell, we put a soothing scent of essential oils on her dog tag which helped her overcome her anxiety mode. Lucy got to play and socialize with other dogs in her foster home like an idiot pup and then as a juvenile dog with more limits on acceptable behavior. While not the most graceful, she is much like her namesake, Lucille Ball...she is funny to watch! Along with her gains learning new manners, thankfully, those moments became less frequent. She was in our home as a foster for over a year, then Lucy met her Ricky Ricardo, her forever dad... Daniel. Those two just clicked. It was love at first sight! We continue to get updates from Daniel and Lucy on how well she is doing and how much he loves her. It was a match meant to be! Foster parents, Lisa and Darl LUCY TAILS OF JOY I just wanted to congratulate SOS for all their great work. I adopted Buttercup in October 2016. She is the best! I have never met such a loving (and licking) dog. She is still a bit shy, but oh so willing to learn and get over her fears. She and my other rescue are the best buddies and so comical. I am thankful that she is in my life. She has so improved the attitude and behaviors of my other dog (Phantom). I attached a photo of Phantom and Buttercup sharing the couch....I mean their couch. Many Thanks, Cindy S. LET ME JUST SAY ON BEHALF OF ALL OF SOS THAT WE ARE THRILLED WITH SWEETIE’S PARENTS!!! Rarely do we see an adult cat get treated like such royalty. We love it! We adopted Sweetie (now Sassy) almost a month ago, and I am happy to say she is loving her new home! She has a big cat tree she can always scratch on and a bunch of toys! I can't express enough how happy I am that we were able to give her a loving home and a good life. I just love her so much! Emma H. Just wanted to give you an update on Ringo who is doing wonderfully well. He and Cletus will even play at times chasing each other. I am sorry to say....you will not be getting him back. He has found his forever home. Thank you so much for fostering him. Holly Nala is here and doing very well! Our other 2 cats aren't thrilled, but they'll work it out. Our dog is completely uninterested in her! Ha! She's actually quite fond of our 17 year old son and has spent most of her time so far in his room. She is such a sweetie!! We already love her! Dawn M. Happy Birthday! You do such amazing work and your "Cliff", now Jack, is the best cat!!! Thank you! Love, The Holkos Corene was their first mom and she was amazing. I still send her pics of the babies. We renamed Bagheera to Stitch. They have brought us so much joy!! Thank you again! Marianne This is our Blarney…originally named Barney. Last month we celebrated St. Patrick's Day and his one year anniversary with us! Some say he is a lucky dog.. we think we're the lucky ones. Dianne D. Heartfelt Thanks! Cindy Shipp wanted to do something great for us – take a look!!! This GORGEOUS quilt was hand made by her and her friends. We will probably be doing a silent auction for it, so contact us if you would like to place a bid to own this one of a kind!!!! You must see in person to appreciate the workmanship! The fine ladies from the Brunswick Eagles Ladies Auxiliary presented us with a check for $1,000 from a raffle they held. Thank You so much! A big thank you goes out to the Norton Cub Scouts Pack 3759 who decided to help out the stray dogs and cats by doing a Christmas collection for us!!! We want to thank Painting with a Twist of Fairlawn for a fantastic fundraiser! We made over $750! And we had an absolute blast. Owner of the Fairlawn location is our very own adopter Jean LA Kelly, and she graciously helped to make this a very prosperous couple of hours. Did I mention we had a blast? Thanks to Reagan Stull of the Order Process Department at ComDoc, Inc. in Uniontown, Ohio. They organized a Valentine's Day event and donated the proceeds to us. Jane Kauf & Samantha Kost brought us a haul! Thanks again to Mike and Samantha Kost who have adopted from us and donated to us for years! They held their annual super bowl party where attendees brought items to donate to Save Ohio Strays. We love Mike Kost and his beautiful bride, Samantha!!! Thanks to all who came, donated, or volunteered that day. We have many to thank already this year! Given that we get no government support, foundation support like this helps us continue this great work. First and foremost, let’s give thanks to one key person who makes this possible. We have been very lucky to have the dedicated volunteer hours of Marlene Kanner. She has done an amazing job, and this year just in the first four months has helped generate over $9,500! For us, that is almost an entire month of operating expenses! Ohio Pet Fund – the OHIO We pet plates generously donatedthank: $1,000 want– to particularly toward our yearly spay and neuter commitment to our adoptables. Pedigree Foundation – awarded us a generous $1,000 for care of our shelter rescues A HUGE 4 PAWS UP THANKS TO THE Petco Foundation We were awarded $7,500 from this wonderful foundation! We have been an anchor partner with the Wadsworth Petco, which has greatly benefitted us not only financially, but also in cat adoptions. They have been amazing supporters, and having the habitat has enabled us to save and place more feline lives. The adoption events have successfully helped us place thousands of dogs and cats over the years. The Petco Foundation believes that every animal deserves to live its best life. And together, with animal lovers like you, they're working to create a better world for them. They do this by: * Finding loving homes for more than 400,000 pets every year through their Think Adoption First program. * Investing in the lifesaving work of the very best animal welfare organizations in the country. * Funding programs that make life better for pets and the people who love and need them, like groundbreaking pet cancer research and service and therapy animal programs. Please support the businesses that support us. These organizations have checked us out, and voted with their dollars. We encourage all donors do that! Thank you all for your generous support! This year has certainly proven to be a challenge medically for many of our rescues, so this money helps us do all we commit to their life for better or for worse. OUR INSPIRATIONS Two Kitty Christmas Miracles! First, sweet Marjorie, our newly saved kitten with eye issues ended up only needing to have one eye removed. The second was able to be saved. Thanks to the great folks at Animal Medical Centre of Medina for their speedy help during a hectic holiday schedule to help this sweet baby. They rock! As does our foster mom Kelly Wiseman who administered no less than 6 meds a day to Marjoriesome more than once a day. Whew! AND, Marjorie’s surgeries were sponsored as a memorial to a dear aunt gone too soon. Second, about 15 months ago, Lucy and Lacey were returned to us after 7 years in a home of their own. They were traumatized. It took MONTHS for our amazing foster home of Steve and Sue Likovich, to get these kitties to even show their faces. They had always been shy, but their world turned upside down when their family lost everything and had to return them. This mom and daughter duo were so fearful that placing them meant a real life miracle. Well, Christmas is the season for it, so guess who got adopted? YES! Lacey and Lucy went to a home of their own who will patiently let them settle in. Special thanks to Steve and Sue who, so often, take on our hardest adult return cases. We love them! Sissy's Journey Sissy was on her own and on the run for SIX months when her owners moved and left her behind. This baby was only 6 months old! She was finally trapped and taken to the wonderful Morrow County Dog Shelter but sadly, when Sissy was opened up to be spayed, cancer was found in her spleen and other organs. Sarina, the most amazing dog warden we know, had her stitched back up instead of euthanizing. You see, Sissy was just too special and sweet to not know that people are good and life can be wonderful. She deserved to feel loved and wanted. Sissy needed a hospice foster where she would be loved and cherished for each day she had left. We were blessed to have a very special supporter and adult cat adopter, Lloyd Brightbill, step up and volunteer for this heartbreaking, yet rewarding job. Hospice fosters are so amazing! They know what is going to happen, but sign up anyway. Sissy is rampant with cancer, but will only know love, kisses, treats and toys for all the rest of her days. Please join me in thanking Lloyd, our official hero. You can follow Sissy's journey on Facebook at Sissy's Bucket List Journey-Make Every Day Count.
