Parish Council brief
The Parish Council does not meet in
January (or August) and so there’s
no report this month.
But John Hannam, the Parish Clerk,
says that there’s been a good response to the questionnaire about
congestion, parking and traffic.
On behalf of the councillors, he’s
declared his thanks for the time
and trouble taken by residents in
completing the form.
He added that the results will
be posted on the Parish website
as soon as they have been processed.
Did you know there are three
ways to read In Touch?
The traditional way is to pick it up
from your doormat and sit down
with a nice cup of tea. Then you
can look on the world wide web
at the splendid www.colsterworth.
com website where In Touch is
reproduced along with much other
information about our parishes. And
finally, you can join the nineteen
people (including one in South
Africa) who get E-InTouch delivered
to their inbox every month.
To enjoy In Touch in the traditional
manner there’s nothing you need to
do. To use the internet, you simply
have to stop looking at Facebook,
EBay and Amazon for a while.
To receive your personal e-mail
copy just send a message to trefor@

egotiations have been going
on with David Wilson Homes
for years regarding a promised
payment to the parish.
When DWH withdrew their
offer to the Parish Council completely over two and a half years
ago, there seemed little hope of
the village receiving anything.
John Hannam then became
Parish Clerk and his persistence
has been rewarded by a signed
agreement for £50,000 to be
paid in four years time. Thanks
must go entirely to John for his
doggedness and hard work.

8 August 1916 – 13 January 2010
ords seem inadequate to describe the life
of George who has just passed away at
the age of93
He was a charismatic man to the ladies, but
also one of the lads who enjoyed the company
of friends and strangers alike. In WWII, which he
rarely talked about, he was a dispatch rider on a
motorbike; he didn’t make a drama about what he had to witness – he
was one of the first to enter Belsen concentration camp.
Originally from Leicester, he entered the shoe trade as a designer but it wasn’t to his liking. His varied career included light
engineering, market gardening, road transport, and helping with
a hotel that Frances his wife ran.
George and Frances eventually retired to Colsterworth and
George constantly said it was the best thing he had ever done,
it being such a friendly village. He threw himself into community
activities such as the Garden Club and with his mates George
Howitt and Doug Campion tackled many problems that arose
in the village.
Until very recently George enjoyed spending time on his allotment
and generously gave away much of his produce. He lifted people’s
hearts with his presence and his humour at any function he attended
and I am proud to be considered one of his many friends.

our editor has seen confidential
e-mails that have passed between senior staff at Lincolnshire
Highways.
In one of the most audacious
and revealing messages, their Chief
Engineer, Nesta Vipers, says she
has drawn up plans to ensure free
movement of all pedestrians and
vehicles throughout the village.
There’s to be a one way system
that encompasses Colster Way,
Back Lane, Woolsthorpe Road, Old
Post Lane and the Bourne Road. All
vehicles except tractors will only
be able to go up Old Post Lane by
coming down it and to keep things
fair for everybody the flow will be
reversed every seven weeks. Parking is to be on one side of the High
Street only, except when there is
an R in the month when residents
will be able to park only on the
other side. We understand that
the debate rages on as to which
side is which.

here was no meeting in January which, under the circumstances, was a good thing – the

anyway. Our next meeting and

wondering if our first meeting

doubt. We heard their reports on
the meetings and we are to be
the door steward and lucky ticket
organisers for the Home Economics meeting at Grantham in May
and the competition organisers
for the Kesteven Group meeting
in October. After attending the
lengthy committee meetings, it
will be a doddle – we’ll be able to
do it standing on our heads.
Names and monies were taken
for the County Federation Spring
Council meeting, subscriptions
were paid and newsletters paid
for. No wonder that the Treasurer
had a smile on her face.
We have been invited to attend Harlaxton WI’s meeting in
February to hear Tony Lane’s talk
on Treasures Beneath Our Feet.
Tony came to us a couple of
years ago, so there weren’t many
wishing to take up the invitation
unfortunately.
Our guest speaker was our own
Jane Ostler who told us about her
visit last year to the WI’s Denman
College at Abingdon, where she
took a course on botanical illustration. She said that the tutor
was excellent and the care from
the staff equally so. We knew
that Jane was a talented lady
with her embroidery etc and
we’ve now found out that she is
equally talented with her drawing
and painting; what an inspiration
she is. Rosemary thanked her for
sharing her experience, with us.
And what do you know? Jane
won the competition for an item
of jewellery. It was no surprise to
find that she had made it herself
– an embroidered stumpwork
brooch embellished with tiny
beads. It was a delight. Barbara
Moore was in second place.

Our next meeting is on February 18th when Jane Barnes will

Competition is a cheese board
(Jane herself makes cheese we
understand, as well as being
an excellent flower arranger).
Oh, these talented ladies can
make one feel so inadequate
sometimes. It’s no wonder that
the WI has changed its logo this
year. Our tree logo has gone to
be replaced by The WI Inspiring
Women. The logo has a two-fold
meaning, and our two Janes
(Ostler and Barnes) certainly
live up to it. So if you wish to
be inspired, why not join us in

Dot Williams
Natural History
Bulletin
F
our weeks of ice and snow has
meant some hard times for us
all. Log piles have been dug deep
into and those who have an interest in such matters have made
discoveries. A handsome spider
was found in the woven tunnel
she had made at the edge of her
sheet web. Her male partner,
who for a short while she had
allowed to share her web, was
long dead but she had made a
silk purse for their eggs. It would
act as a nursery when the eggs
hatched so she was put back to
continue making a living. Three
wood mice found dead in a nest
behind a greenhouse were not
so lucky. They have longer tails
and larger eyes and ears which
distinguish them from the house
mouse. Voles have more rounded
profiles than both and, before the
snows came, a bank vole was seen
out on the Stamford Road. This is
the most vegetarian of the voles
and it is hoped it would survive,
along with small birds, under
the shelter of the small trees and
shrubs in the area.
The smallest birds suffer most
from prolonged frozen conditions. They have little stored fat
to use when food is unavailable.
In the gardens, goldfinches have
benefitted most from feeders
designed specifically for them –
up to 20 reported in one garden.
Fieldfare and redwings have come
into gardens for fallen apples and
berries. Redwings fought with
blackbirds and demolished all
the berries on a cotoneaster in an
afternoon. There is little we can
do to help some birds. The tawny
owl and the woodcock will have
had a hard time of it, but at least
there were areas without snow
under the canopy of trees in their
preferred woodland habitat. Barn
owls, on the other hand, hunt only
along ditches, verges and in the
open fields.
Whilst ponds and even larger
bodies of water have been frozen over, our stretch of the River
Witham has been flowing freely.

A heron sat most days on a patch
of green shaded by a tree. It was
described as “looking rather fed
up” but presumably not overfed
because the easy pickings of pond
goldfish were not available.
Near the bridge on Woolsthorpe
Road was a surprise visitor – a
great crested grebe. It was not
instantly recognisable as such

To look for in February
At the time of writing no hazels
reported as shedding pollen,
nor lesser celandines in flower
and first dates of these are recorded annually as part of a
national scheme. Amazingly a
few groundsel, chickweed, red
deadnettle, daisy and speedwell
flowers emerged from under the
snow.
With little else about, there
is time to observe the “weeds”
which provide the first food for
emerging insects. It would be
good to know if our Barn Owls
have survived. Look for them
flying either in the vicinity of
Bridge End or near the Stainby/
Skillington cross roads.

Many thanks to everyone who gave their support to our Carols by Candlelight on Christmas Eve.
Despite very wintery conditions under foot we had a nearly full congregation. Presentation
was by Helen Scorror and Pamela Harrison, supported by various readers with prayers given by
Tracey Hague.
Your support has enabled us to donate £265 to Grantham Children’s Deaf Society. Many, many
thanks!

Long range weather forecast
T
he newspapers have reported that the BBC is considering severing
ties with the Meteorological Office, so the £50, 000 that David Wilson is to hand over is going to provide an exciting opportunity for the
folk of Lobthorpe, North Witham, Gunby, Stainby, Woolsthorpe and
Colsterworth (henceforth to be re-named Colsterbythorpeworth).
The Met Office is to provide a priority weather hotline for all residents within the next few weeks and it will be followed soon by a
coldline and a wetline.
Peregrine Wintry-Damptrousers, the Colsterbythorpeworth spokesperson said, “We’re all terribly excited that the Met Office has accepted
our cash. I handed over the box of slightly moist fivers to that nice
Mr Frank Fish only yesterday. He told me that although a lady who
lives down by the river reckons there might be storms, he’s confident
that it’ll be sunshine all the way until the start of summer and there’s
no sign of any March winds or April showers.”
