They were given to the Austrian emperor as a diplomatic gift by the Egyptian viceroy. The animals were greeted enthusiastically, and today, almost 200 years later, the giraffes are still a firm favourite among visitors. Currently located in a historic part of the zoo, the giraffe enclosure is the only part not to have been renovated. The zoo is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Schönbrunn and this project will be completed in line with the criteria applied to protected buildings. Schönbrunn is a genuinely unique experience thanks to its Baroque architecture and state-of-theart approach to wild animal keeping. Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, and Oskar Kokoschka – then the three most outstanding painters of Viennese modernism – approached the subject matter generally referred to as the ‘woman question’ from slightly different, albeit overlapping perspectives. The exhibition will present an in-depth exploration of these differences and similarities. Providing insights into the relationship between the sexes in the early twentieth centuries, the show will elaborate on the origins of a modern sexual identity. www.belvedere.at 07 Veranstaltungen / Events Journal SEPTEMBER / SEPTEMBRE bis/until 02.11. „Der Krieger, die Witwe und ihr Sohn – Prinz Eugen, Maria Theresia und Joseph II.“ “The Warrior, the Widow and her Son – Prince Eugene, Maria Theresa und Joseph II” bis/until 15.11. „… aus kaiserlichem Nachlass“ “… from the emperor’s estate” 13.09.
