Whether it was the consecration of a church, a school or even an observatory, Emperor Franz Joseph was a firm believer in marking anniversaries.
And 100 years after his death we are taking up the challenge of shining a
critical light on his life from various different angles. But there is also lots
going on elsewhere in Imperial Austria right now.
W
hat could be more romantic than waking a fairytale
palace from its slumber?
This happy task falls to Schloss Schönbrunn Kultur- und Betriebsges.m.b.H.
Originally a hunting lodge constructed
by the architect Fischer von Erlach for
Count Starhemberg, the property was
subsequently sold by the nobleman’s
widow to Prince Eugene of Savoy – the
man who built the nearby Schloss Hof.
Clearly taken by both, Empress Maria
Theresa decided to buy Schloss Niederweiden when she acquired Schloss
Hof. In 2016 this architectural gem will
fully reopen to the public for the first
time in years, taking its place as one
of four venues for a large-scale special
exhibition entitled Franz Joseph 18301916 – On the occasion of the centenary
of the Emperor's Death. It is hard to
imagine a more fitting location for the
Hunting & Recreation segment of the
exhibition than this hunting lodge with
its fully-equipped and fully-functioning
game kitchen.
Niederweiden: a palace emerges
from its slumber
There is also a great deal going on at
Schloss Hof this year, making it more
attractive than ever to visitors: two new
experience trails give an immersive
insight into the era of Prince Eugene.

popularity once again this year.
Bang on time for the bathing season, a
new pool is being built for the six-strong
herd of elephants at Schönbrunn Zoo.

mpress Elisabeth’s life was defined by two tragic deaths: she
lost her first daughter Sophie
at the age of just two, while her son
Rudolf went on to take his own life as an
adult. The responses to these tragedies
and the Viennese court’s approach to
mourning are two of the central themes
at the current special exhibition in the
audience waiting room at the Imperial
Apartments at the Vienna Hofburg.

attraction will open at the estate: visitors can slip into the role of a stable boy
or milk maid on a pair of new adventure
trails and find out more about life on
the farmstead in Prince Eugene’s day.
The hands-on journey culminates with
a princely treat.
Putting on the Ritz
The farmstead and its four-legged
residents are also at the heart of various
events at Schloss Hof, which include a
Baroque animal procession, an equestrian festival and, for the first time this
year, a camel festival. The annual event
schedule gets under way with an Easter
Market, followed by spring garden days,
full-moon evenings in the Baroque
garden, an autumn garden party, a kiteflying festival and finally the perennial
Christmas village. A murder mystery
theatre with dinner and popular concerts by the Marchfeld Philharmonic
Orchestra set the culinary and musical
tone. 2016 will also see the launch of
two important renovation projects that
will run until 2017: reconstructing the
largest cascade and revitalising the
seventh terrace will restore the magnificent formal gardens at Schloss Hof to
the former glory once immortalised on
Canaletto’s paintings.

In 2017 the Baroque Schloss Nieder­
weiden will be one of five venues for the

A
combination of Baroque palace,
formal gardens comprising
seven terraces and working
estate, Schloss Hof is Austria’s largest
country palace complex. The 240 or
so varieties of animals that live on the
estate include rare sheep and chickens,
old Austrian domestic breeds as well as
more exotic species such as camels and
alpacas. There are also white donkeys,
which are typical of the Baroque period. A trip to the petting zoo, stables or
a walk through the paddocks provides
a touch of animal magic. A separate
interactive exhibition about life on the
estate can be found in the Bäckenhof
section of the complex. In mid-March,

One for the night owls! When the zoo closes its doors, you can see a completely different side
to the animals on an evening or night tour. Discount rates are available for tour operators.

Evening tours
As the last rays of sun hit the imperial
ochre of the Baroque buildings, many
of the animals are tucking into their
evening meal, while others are getting
ready to bed down for the night. During the evening tours, which are only
available during summer, you will be
given special access to the animals in
the world’s oldest zoo. “Tour guests can
watch the elephants enjoy their nightly
ration of hay. Elephants only sleep for
three to four hours a night. The rest of
their time is spent foraging for food,”
explains the zoo’s managing director
Dagmar Schratter. Lasting an hour and
a half, the tour takes in all parts of the
zoo and is punctuated by regular stops
at various enclosures for some fascinating animal facts.
The special charm of the evening after
the last regular visitors have left is sure
to leave a lasting impression. Look on as
the lions stretch their paws out in front
of them in the setting sun. And while
the sea lions are slowly winding down
for the day, the ring-tailed lemurs are
still out swinging through the trees before they too turn in for the night.
Night tours
Sleepyheads need not apply! The night
tours give you a unique opportunity to
tiptoe through the zoo with an expert
guide and take a unique look at some of
the nocturnal and sleeping animals. As
night falls over Vienna, some of the zoo’s
inhabitants come to life. “The Egyptian
fruit bats sleep throughout the day and
during the late evening and night they
fly through the hippo house on the
lookout for food,” Schratter explains.
Equipped with low-light amplifiers,
participants will be able to see them and
various other interesting discoveries.
The wolves patrol their territory in the
moonlight and, like all felines, the tigers
like to get up and stretch their legs between naps from time to time. During

for Schönbrunn’s
elephants
More bath-time fun for the elephants: Schönbrunn Zoo
is building a new pool for its pachyderms, meaning that
there is plenty of fun in store for visitors.
Showering, wallowing in mud and bathing: elephants are
water babies at heart. "In summer the water helps the animals
cool off. But it is essential for keeping their skin in tip-top
condition throughout the year," explains zoo director Dagmar
Schratter. At the moment the members of the six-strong herd
take a shower every day. And there is a mud bath for them to
wallow in.
The bath needed for the largest land mammals on earth is
truly gigantic: the new elephant pool has a volume of 225 cubic
metres, which is equivalent to 1,500 standard bath tubs. There
will also be a waterfall coming out of the pump house in the
middle of the pool. At the same time water jets will provide
a massage, creating an elephantine spa experience. The new
pool will be ready in spring 2016, just in time for the new
bathing season. It will also be a major attraction for visitors.
"The pool is being built in the front part
of the elephant park so that visitors will
have a great view of the animals splashing
around." Dagmar Schratter explains.
