President’s Message A Message from the Executive Director We are finally enjoying some warmer spring days, just in time for our annual 5K Fun Walk. The weather promises to be beautiful and we hope that many of you will join us at the CEC on Sunday, May 5. Registration begins at 9:00 a.m., followed by mass at 10:00 a.m. and then the Walk and other fun festivities, including a free BBQ, a live concert and a raffle draw. Thank you to all of the schools that participated in Shape Up Week. Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE) provided an exciting event at St. Francis Xavier where students were thrilled to hear words of wisdom given by the alumni and players. Did you know that former Toronto Raptors player Jamaal Magliore is a St. Timothy graduate? We have received a lot of positive feedback from participating schools, who enjoyed the 2nd annual TCDSB Shape Up Week, which is the only Angel Foundation for Learning event that takes place solely within TCDSB schools. A special thank you to three schools who held special fundraisers this month for The Angel Foundation for Learning – Our Lady of Fatima; Chaminade, who held a Karaoke Night; and Loretto Abbey, who hosted their annual Staff-Student Charity Hockey game. Your support is much appreciated and even more significant because it is students supporting students! Spring is finally upon us and as the trees turn green and flowers start to bloom, we should feel a sense of energy and renewal. We are all deserving of some sun and fun after the long winter months. Speaking of energy, I would like to congratulate St. Francis Xavier Catholic School, winners of the TCDSB Shape Up Week Grand Prize draw, who welcomed players and representatives from the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Toronto Raptors, the Toronto Marlies and the Toronto FC at their school. The students showed a lot of energy as they learned about the benefits of healthy, active living - messages that we continue to promote through our Student Nutrition Programs The TCDSB’s Virtue for April was JUSTICE. Justice means that we deal fairly with others, recognizing that everyone Congratulations to April’s winner of the Random Cents-Off draw, Michael DeRoma, a teacher at Holy Family. Michael won a 1,000g bag of Espresso Coffee donated by Barbara Caffè. He tells us that he “loves espresso.” If you are not part of the Cents-Off program, please consider joining. Every staff member who is enrolled in Cents-Off is automatically entered into a monthly draw. Simply click here, fill out the form and return it to us. Warmest regards, Marisa Celenza deserves equality and dignity. Justice requires that we work to ensure that all people, especially the poor and vulnerable, have equal access to opportunities. It is with this Virtue in mind that I encourage all TCDSB staff to sign up for The Angel Foundation for Learning CentsOff program. What better way to help The Angel Foundation meet its mandate to provide access to programs and cultural activities to those who are least likely to have these opportunities. It is only a few cents from each paycheque but it will make a big difference in the lives of the children in our community. April Highlights from The Angel Foundation for Learning A huge Thank You to all of our generous supporters and volunteers who donate their time and money to help The Angel Foundation for Learning continue its work. Here are just a few of the many highlights from April: Shape Up Week 2013 Students across the TCDSB pulled out their running shoes and joined in the 2nd Annual TCDSB Shape Up Week that took place April 8-13, 2013. Over 50 schools participated in week-long physical activities and community walks to promote healthy, active living. Contributing to the common good is essentially what justice is all about. Let us all be generous and give what we can. Enjoy the Spring weather! Nancy Murdocca, MSW RSW President The Angel Foundation for Learning “Believe in Angels” Mission Statement The Angel Foundation for Learning is a charitable organization that serves the needs of students of the TCDSB. Through the generosity & compassion of donors, we support vulnerable students by nurturing their body, mind and soul through nutritional, educational and spiritual programs. Students from St. Fidelis taking part in a Shape Up Week walk During Shape Up Week, schools ran a variety of activities, including DPA assemblies, community walks and raffles for prize packs provided by Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment. These events delivered positive messages from the TCDSB Physical Education Department about the importance of proper nutrition, physical activity and making healthy choices. They also addressed the importance of 20 minutes of DPA as mandated by the Ministry of Education. Healthy, active living is positively contagious and TCDSB’s Shape Up Week is helping this message come to life at our schools.” Marisa Celenza, Executive Director, The Angel Foundation for Learning.
