ASPCA Partner Community Update: A Victorious First Year! We promised to keep you informed on the progress being made in our community as we venture through our Partnership with the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) — so here’s a brief summary of what happened in 2014! In order to save the lives of more at-risk and homeless pets, we have been keeping a close watch on the individual focus areas to ensure the overall success of our main objective: to increase the live release rate of animals in our city (in other words, decrease the number of animals being euthanized). We are so happy to report that at the close of 2014’s third quarter, the live release rate had increased from 47.2% to 60%! harlotte.org The Humane Society of Charlotte (HSC) and Charlotte Animal Care & Control (CMACC) were able to achieve these remarkable results by allocating awarded grant funding from the ASPCA to specific needs that required immediate and dedicated attention. One of our core focuses was decreasing overall shelter intake by 1) increasing spay/neuter surgeries, 2) decreasing owner surrender of pets into our shelters and 3) developing a community cat TNR program (Trap-Neuter-Return). In order to increase the capacity of surgeries we could perform, we partnered with Spay Neuter Charlotte. Decreasing owner surrenders was successful due to the development of a safety net program that involved local veterinary partners who agreed to offer financial assistance to families who could not afford medical care for their pets and would have had to otherwise surrender them to one of our 15BBDNEW NCCH2 Feb15 Newsletter PKG.indd 2 Round/Final Art #: 3 Date: 12/2/14 = 8.5” x ~3.67 shelters. Educating the public through our community outreach events and weekly/monthly vaccine clinics was another tool we used to reduce surrenders. Lastly, HSC established a TNR program that loaned free traps and covered the cost of any feral feline TNR surgery. The other key focus was on increasing the number of live release outcomes by 1) increasing adoptions, 2) increasing the number of lost pets returned to owners and 3) exploring animal transfer/ relocation opportunities. We spent a lot of time coming up with fun, creative promotions that would help increase awareness and adoptions each month such as: January’s Panthers & Pups, February’s Love of Your Life and March’s Find Your Lucky Charm, just to name a few. We also had two Mega-Adoption events — May’s Slide into Home ending with 156 adoptions and October’s Monster Mash Adoption Bash ending with 91 total adoptions. CMACC modified their billing and reclaim process and adjusted their lost and found reporting and notification protocols, which in turn increased the number of pets returned to owners. Finally, we created several incentive programs for other 501(c)(3) rescue groups to encourage them to transfer more animals from our shelters into their care as well as completed seven successful out-of-state animal transports by the end of September. As we enter year two of this citywide collaboration, HSC and CMACC will continue to concentrate on these initiatives as well as strategize on additional approaches in making Charlotte a community that is focused on saving the lives of helpless and homeless pets. Message from our CEO Humane Society of Charlotte 2700 Toomey Ave Charlotte, NC 28203-5556 704.377.0534 www.humanecharlotte.org BOARD OF DIRECTORS Kevin Gottehrer Parker, Poe, Adams & Bernstein, LLP, Chair A new year is not a minor occasion to us — it’s a breath of fresh air filled with new ideas, new opportunities, and new chances for animals that are at risk in our community. It’s another 365 days that we have been given to make a difference in the lives of homeless pets. We are extremely excited to enter 2015, as it will be the second year that Charlotte is an ASPCA Partner Community and a year filled with explorations of additional opportunities for HSC, such as offsite adoption centers. We could not be more eager to see what evolves over the next year as we continue along our journey, growing stronger with each partnership. One constant we do know is that at the beginning and end of every one of our successes lies you. Thank you for your endless trust and support — our future burns bright because of it! I’ve struggled with how helpless animals are on their own and about six years ago I decided I was going to make time to do more to help them. I attended a volunteer orientation at HSC and got to meet some really wonderful people whose work inspired me to try and do more myself. I started volunteering and got a feel for how much is involved in running a great shelter and decided to not only volunteer, but to contribute funds when I could as well. I committed to a monthly amount and set up my donations to be taken from my credit card automatically. I’m truly glad that I did because it’s so easy and I never have to think about writing a check or going online every time I want to contribute. Volunteering and seeing the love and care that the animals receive at the shelter until they find their forever homes is what motivates me to continue to give.” – Therese Humphrey, PAW-tomatic Member Since 2011 Fostering n enrichment to open up who deserve number of Succ Moby “Moby is sm We adore h *To sign up or for more information on automatic monthly giving, please email Nicole Patrick at npatrick@humanesocietyofcharlotte.org. EO Fostering – More Than Just a Vacation As you may know, an animal is in need of foster care when they are: 1) too young for adoption, 2) sick or injured or 3) senior aged in need of long-term care. While all of these are extremely important needs, there is more behind fostering than meets the eye. do know is ank you for Many animals that enter our shelter have come from bad situations such as abusive households, puppy mills and hoarding cases. Most of the pets that come from one of these scenarios are in need of behavioral, social and medical rehabilitation. Also, some animals that have been at the shelter for a long period of time just need some rest and relaxation away from the shelter. Fostering not only provides animals with vital care and enrichment that they desperately need, but it allows HSC to open up space at the shelter for more unwanted pets who deserve a happy home. This ultimately reduces the number of innocent animals that are being euthanized and do more nning a great uld as well. I y credit card think about g and seeing orever homes Success Stories Being around animals has a fantastic therapeutic effect on our lives, and the great thing about fostering is that it allows you to spend time with an animal without the longterm commitment. Also, research has shown that caring for pets has a beneficial effect on children’s development and intellect. When kids see you setting a good example as a role model they are more likely to grow up to be caring, responsible adults. For more information on fostering, please visit hscifoster.org. Did you know that you can foster an animal for as little or as long as your schedule allows? Whether it’s 24 hours, one weekend, two weeks or six months, you will come to know the personality of your foster pet and gather important information that will assist us in finding the best possible home for them permanently. “We could not be more pleased to have him.
