We started with thirty students and five teachers and staff. Now we have ninety students, with eighteen teachers, staff and administration. We have celebrated four classes that have graduated from high school. The Class of 2015 can boast of a 93% graduation rate from their respective high schools. Fifty percent of the graduates attend a four year college; two additional students attend Community College of Philadelphia; one student is attending the Universal Technical Institute for automotives; one is in the Navy, and three have joined the work force. While this is encouraging news, the unfortunate statistic is that one out of every five children in the United States today lives in poverty. This is true in the city of Philadelphia as well. It is evident that the need for our mission and our model is as strong today as it was in 2003 when we started. We need to continue our commitment to our students so that they too can go and make a difference, not only in their own lives, but in the lives of their families and the community. La Salle Academy is a success and our approach to education is working. We are mission driven, ready for any good work and always looking for potential on which to build. We are never satisfied, and are always reaching for more. At our Board Meeting in May 2015, our Chairman, Jim Lynch, proposed to our Board of Trustees the possibility of starting a Graduate Support Committee. The major task of this group is to act as a resource and to support our Graduate Support Director. They will also help our high school students navigate the college application process and beyond. We continue to see possibility! We will always acknowledge the unwavering support and dedication of our Board of Trustees, our administration, teachers and you, our benefactors. We cannot do what we do without you! We all want to give the students of La Salle Academy every opportunity to succeed because when they succeed, we all succeed. Thank you for your investment in our students and in their dreams. On a personal note, from “where I stand,” I like what I see. We continue to be LSA Proud! Sister Jeanne McGowan, SSJ President of La Salle Academy ‰ Page 3 La Salle Academy Annual Report 2014-2015 Chairman’s Letter Dear Friends, I am fortunate to be the Chairman of La Salle Academy; I am delighted to again have the pleasure of thanking you for your time, your involvement, your energy and your love of La Salle Academy. Our Board of Trustees offers you our most sincere gratitude for your generous support. That support enables us to continue our efforts to provide a values-based Catholic education to our students facing some of the toughest of inner city obstacles. Our students and their families encounter poverty, family addiction, job loss and low graduation rates. Our students come to La Salle Academy for a safe haven and for an exceptional education. And, it is because of your generosity that La Salle Academy can help our students of many faiths overcome these obstacles and become productive and successful citizens in whatever life path they follow. This report notes with pride our achievements and our students’ successes. Your financial support helped us to report another successful year, yet we cannot rest on past success. In September, we welcomed our new class of third graders. We will continue to encourage our students and our graduates attending high school and must continue to innovate, to evolve and to work towards sustainability. Our students improved their personal standardized test scores; our teachers and students again responded remarkably well to RtII, a national program that uses data to effectively drive instruction and improve learning. La Salle Academy continues to have a 96% attendance rate and a 97% graduation rate. Since our founding, approximately 90% of our La Salle Academy students graduate from high school in four years. More than 50% of all of our graduates are pursuing various forms of higher education, 10% of our graduates are serving in the U.S. Military, approximately 30% are productive in the local workforce. La Salle Academy is true to its mission. A La Salle Academy education establishes a strong educational foundation. At the heart of our mission is the belief that a quality, values-based education will break the cycle of poverty. So, I thank you. Thank you for helping to provide this education and for continuing to support our efforts. Thank you for the part you play in providing an amazing education to children who, without your generosity, would be lost in a broken public school system. Thank you for believing in our work, in our community, and in our students. Please come visit our unique school to see how your involvement makes a lasting impact, one student at a time. Come see what “La Salle Academy Proud” looks like in action. With sincere gratitude, Jim Lynch Chairman of the Board of Trustees ‰ Page 4 La Salle Academy Annual Report 2014-2015 Principal’s Letter Dear Friends, Long before Pope Francis visited Philadelphia, La Salle Academy was happily stricken with Francis Fever. Just two months after becoming pope, Pope Francis said, “To love God and neighbor is not something abstract, but profoundly concrete: it means seeing in every person the face of the Lord to be served, to serve him concretely. And you are, dear brothers and sisters, in the face of Jesus.” (Address during Visit at the Homeless Shelter “Dona Di Maria,” 5/21/13) Our La Salle Academy family understands that serving the poor means serving Jesus directly and concretely. Specifically, the La Salle Academy Board of Trustees is committed, and has been committed, to providing a holistic, Christian education to our students whose average family income is under $20,000, in the traditions of the Brothers of the Christian Schools and Sisters of St. Joseph. The generosity of our Board Members and our benefactors gives breadth and depth to Pope Francis’ challenge to serve the poor. You are making a difference. Each donation and each benefactor inspires our community at 2nd and Jefferson Streets. Testimony to that change is the 43 students receiving academic honors for the 2014-2015 school year and 34 receiving recognition for Behavior and Life Skills. We are especially proud of three of the 2015 Graduates who received three of the four McNamee Scholarships offered by the McNamee Foundation. Students’ lives have been improved through participation in academic programs like WIN, Compass Learning and Writer’s Workshop. Learning grows exponentially with one-to-one technology under the tutelage of a caring and qualified faculty and with enrichment clubs which include The Art of Growing Leadership, My Daughter’s Kitchen, Urban Blazers, USLI Mentors. Tutors from La Salle College High, Mount St. Joseph Academy, St. Basil Academy, La Salle University and Villanova University bless students weekly as they witness to the value of education and service. The chart below celebrates the academic progress of students from the Class of 2015. Thank you for your selfless generosity as agents of change not just for a day but for the lifetimes of our students. Sincerely, Teresa Diamond Proud Principal of La Salle Academy This graph documents the growth of three students who began at a high, medium or low level of academic functioning in third grade in the subjects of Reading, Language, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. The CSI is the overall "Cognitive Skills Index" score that relates to generalized cognitive abilities. Please note the remarkable improvement of CSI scores. The student who began with a 68 CSI graduated with a CSI of 86, an 18 point improvement. It is clear that La Salle Academy continues to assist students at all levels reach their highest academic potential. These results are representative of all our students, and have been consistent with each graduating class. La Salle Academy’s impact grows exponentially with each of our students. We could not continue our work without your support and dedication to our mission. ‰ Page 5 La Salle Academy Annual Report 2014-2015 Financial Summary La Salle Academy is deeply grateful to our Board of Trustees and to our Benefactors who have made the 2014 - 2015 year a fundraising success. Smith Friends of La Salle Academy Since 2004, the young Friends of La Salle Academy have helped raise awareness about the mission of La Salle Academy. These young professionals help raise funds through several small events each year. They also participate in our mentor program, LSA Connects. The Friends held two successful events in 2014-2015 and raised $5,000 for La Salle Academy. $5,000 can provide one of the following: half-year tuition for one student, quarter-year tuition for two students, 5 Enrichment Programs for our Extended Day and Year, art and school supplies for 20 students, 10 field trips for an entire class, uniforms for 50 students, and more! Thank you to all of the Friends who helped make this year another success!
