Honestly, I am so excited for the upcoming school year as we welcome
more than 820 students to Logan High School. The Logan staff has been
busy throughout the summer to ensure our students will be met with challenging curriculum supported through numerous teaching and learning
strategies.
It is our goal to inspire our students to soar and achieve in the academics,
arts, and athletics. They will be challenged through critical thinking, rigor,
and high expectations to succeed. I want every student and parent to know
we are here to cultivate high school students into becoming lifelong members of the Logan Family, by fostering faculty/student relationships, building a stimulating individualized learning community, encouraging diversity
and understanding, and celebrating our successes. We are proud of our
students and know their success is a combination of determination, hard
work, and support by involved and supportive, parents, guardians, and
other family members.
Please stay tuned for more information regarding Logan’s 5-year plan and
themes for each of the years! It will be exciting and challenging as we move
forward into the future.
In closing, please enjoy the rest of summer taking time to relax, reenergize, and spend time with family and friends. It is quality time that
reminds us what is truly important in life.
Sincerely,
Logan High School

HIGHLY QUALIFIED TEACHERS
The School District of La Crosse takes pride in hiring only
highly qualified teachers. This means they all are fully
trained, certified, and often experienced in the position they
teach. Our faculty consistently has a high percentage of advanced degrees, and we do a good job of retaining some of
the top staff in the state and the nation. Life events, such as
retirement, childbirth, or illness, sometimes cause a need for
a long- term substitute teacher. When this happens we always make every effort to hire a highly qualified substitute.
All are certified teachers and most are licensed in the area in
which they are substituting. In rare cases it may be impossible to find a teacher with a particular certification, such as
special education. This may result in the district asking the
Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction for an emergency license for such a teacher. If you ever have any questions about the certification of any of our staff, please call
me, Dr. Deborah Markos, principal of Logan High School.

ATTENDANCE INFORMATION
Logan High School will again utilize our computerized calling system, Skylert for attendance purposes.
Skylert is a device that plugs into our existing computer system. It has the capability of reading the absence
report and can automatically call parents when their students are reported absent without reason.
A pre-recorded message will be received by parents the same evening informing them that their student was
marked absent in one or more classes that day. The parent will then be instructed to call the Attendance
Office the following school day.
It is the student’s responsibility to resolve each absence. Failure to resolve an absence will result in truancy.
It is the parent’s/guardian’s responsibility to call the Attendance Office the day of an absence. If our lines
are busy or you call when the office is not open, please leave a message including the reason for the
absence, time of dismissal and if your student will be returning.
1. If your son or daughter will be missing the whole day, please call the Attendance Office no later
than 09:00 a.m. the same day.
2. If your son or daughter will be leaving school for an appointment, please call the Attendance Office
prior to the time the student will be leaving. It is the student's responsibility to obtain a dismissal pass
from the Attendance Office to show the teacher for whose class he/she will be leaving. Again, if the
student returns to school following the appointment, he/she must let the Attendance Office know
upon arrival. If your student will not be returning to school after the appointment, the office must be
notified the same day.
3. If your student will be missing two (2) or more days due to vacation, scheduled surgery, etc., please
call the Attendance Office at least one (1) week before the absence. This type of absence must be approved by the student’s administrator. A pre-excused form will then be issued and must be signed by
all teachers. When this form is completed, it should be turned into the Attendance Office at which
time the absence will be excused.
4. If your son or daughter becomes ill at school, he/she must sign out with our Health Assistant. Failure to do so may result in an unexcused absence. Parents will be notified and arrangements will be
made at this time.
Again, we stress that it is the parent's or guardian's responsibility to notify the Attendance Office. Thank
you for your cooperation!
GOING HOME SICK?
If your child gets sick at school they MUST report to the Health Room located in the Attendance Office.
Students should not text parents during class time, telling them they need to go home ill. If they are truly ill,
they should be asking their teacher for permission to see the Health Assistant. The Health office is here for
several reasons: First and foremost, to insure the safety of your child, secondly, to assist your child in determining if it is necessary for them to go home, and lastly to properly excuse them from school. For safety
and security reasons, students should not leave school without checking out through the health room.

The 2014-15 PLTW-Digital Electronics class at La Crosse Logan
High School partnered with Dairyland Power Cooperative to design an
Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)
which could be used for inspection
of power line structures located in
difficult terrain. Funding for the project was made possible by a grant
from the La Crosse Public Education
Foundation. The project was completed this summer.
The class designed, programmed
and fabricated the UAV with the
following targeted goals:
1. Inspect power lines for vegetation and overgrowth that could po-
tentially cause a power outage.
2. Incorporate a First Person View
(FPV) system so the flight of the
UAV can be monitored by a ground
station (laptop) or an Android based
mobile device.
3. Design the UAV so the GPS coordinates of the power poles can be
programmed into the flight plan.
4. Design/build a thermal camera

Libros para Nicaragua!
Spanish 5 juniors and seniors from
Logan High School, teamed up with
Gundersen Lutheran to provide books
and open libraries in rural Nicaragua.
Logan students learned about education
in Nicaragua and the high rate of illiteracy amongst the people there. In order
to combat illiteracy and promote the
importance of reading, they each wrote
a story in Spanish that focused on a
positive idea like team work, honesty,
education, and perseverance. The students also put their art skills to work by
illustrating the books. The books will
be donated to a library that will be
opened in Nicaragua at the end of June.

ACT® Prep CourseACT®
Prep Course
Designed to raise student test
scores!
This unparalleled ACT® test preparation course readies students for all four sections of the
ACT® test, plus the optional writing section. Students take official, retired ACT® pre- and posttests to determine strengths and weaknesses. Qualified instructors work directly with students
to work through this comprehensive preparation program. Preparing for the ACT can increase
test scores that are important for gaining acceptance into your college of choice and for expanding your scholarship opportunities.
This course is designed to complement area high schools' preparatory programs.
This program provides 12 hours of instruction in: writing strategies to assist you in the essay
part of the ACT® test; orientation to the ACT® and its four parts; opportunity to take diagnostic assessments; instruction in all four areas; test-taking strategies for each of the components and for the entire test; practice with printed materials where test-taking tips can be
applied and reinforced and interactive skill drills in deficit areas as measured by the diagnostic test.
Course materials are provided by Cambridge Educational Services, the leader in test preparation.
Students will:
•
Establish their own baseline for ACT® testing by completing an official, retired ACT® test
•
Receive a detailed analysis of their baseline test to understand personal strengths and weaknesses
•
Learn powerful test-taking strategies for each test section and question type
•
