2010 Volume 1 The McLaughlin Family’s Story When Amy and Doug McLaughlin brought their two-month-old son Teddy to the doctor, they already knew something was wrong.“We could not get him to gain weight no matter what we did,” says Amy.“We were feeding him around the clock. He was increasingly having trouble breathing.” The doctor examined Teddy and immediately sent the family to the hospital.“He told us to put Teddy back into the car and drive to The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. There would be a bed waiting for us.” Teddy’s three-year-old sister Charlee was also able to stay at the House. “That really made a big difference,” Amy says.“It let her spend time with us and her brother. The House is so kid-friendly. It gave her a lot of things to do that made her feel special. The last time we went home, she said ‘No, the Ronald McDonald House will miss me. I want to stay here.’” Amenities like the Guest Chef program were also a big help to Amy during her stay, particularly At the hospital, the McLaughlins after her long daily commute to the learned that the small jaw that Teddy Princeton oncology lab where she was born with was not something that works as a research investigator.“It he would grow out of, but actually was not a fun commute, but I would Charlee holding her brother Teddy Goldenhar Syndrome, a congenital go there during the day, come back, birth defect that made eating and breathing very difficult. After the go to the hospital, and crash at the House. There was always food waiting McLaughlins’ second night of sleeping in the NICU while Teddy received care, when I came back,” she says. the social worker suggested they consider the Philadelphia Ronald Today, the McLaughlin family is home and Teddy is doing better.“He is really McDonald House. thriving. He is on the growth charts finally,” Amy says.“With everything he “I am so glad she did,”says Amy.“Teddy was supposed to stay for two weeks has been through, he is the happiest, smiliest kid you would ever meet.” which then turned into two months. We ended up staying for five months. It Teddy will continue to have follow-up care, and when he is four or five, will gave us a solid foundation when our lives were in such upheaval.” have jaw reconstruction that should enable him to breathe without a tube. During this time,Teddy underwent three surgeries, including the insertion of both a feeding and tracheostomy tube so that he could eat and breathe. The House offered the McLaughlins, who are from New Jersey, more than just a place to sleep while they were here.“It is not just the room, which is fabulous, but all of the other little things that the House provides,”says Amy.“Just being with other parents who are in the same situation that you are in. Everyone staying at the House – they really get it.” “We know our time at The Children’s Hospital is not over, and we have a long journey going forward,” says Amy. Still, knowing her family can stay at the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House makes the road ahead seem easier.“It is like my second home now. Coming in, it makes one thing less complicated when you have this very complicated situation with having a sick child.Thank you for taking some of the everyday burdens off of our shoulders so we could focus on our children.” Doug,Teddy, Charlee, and Amy McLaughlin This is the House that Love Built 3925 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104 I 215-387-8406 I www.philarmh.org Message From The Executive Director Join us for the 2nd Annual Southwest Airlines Plane Pull It is an extraordinary honor to have been nominated and chosen to participate in the Olympic Torch Relay representing the Executive Directors of the Ronald McDonald Houses in the East Region. I traveled to Toronto to carry the torch on December 19, 2009, which was Day 51 of the 106-day Torch Relay to Vancouver. On February 12, 2010, the Olympic flame will have traveled by land, air, and water through more than 1,000 Canadian communities, and over 12,000 people will have the honor of being an Olympic Torchbearer. to Benefit The Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House Sunday, May 2, 2010 Atlantic Aviation Next to the Philadelphia International Airport As a torchbearer, I was part of a widely diverse group of individuals that had one common goal – to pass the Olympic flame for over 45,000 kilometers along a 106-day journey. My participation in this once-in-a-lifetime experience is dedicated to the thousands of parents, patients, siblings, and other caregivers who come through our doors with one common goal – to make sure that their child, sibling, or family member receives life-saving medical treatment. Each night, 60 families with diverse backgrounds come together and support one another through this time in their life. I admire their strength, courage, and determination. The Plane Pull is a giant tug-of-war between your team of 20 and a hefty Southwest Boeing 737.You’ll compete to see which team can pull the plane 50 feet with the fastest time. It’s fun, wacky, and best of all, raises vital funds for the families we serve. Prizes will be awarded for Overall Fastest Pull, Top Team Fundraiser, & Top Individual Fundraiser. A special thank you to Coca-Cola, a presenting partner of the Olympic Torch Relay, for the wonderful opportunity to participate. From monetary gifts through our Share A Night campaign, to presents and much-needed household items through our Adopt a Family and Holiday Wish List collections, to delicious meals through our Guest Chef program, we are grateful to every individual, business, and organization who helped make the holidays just a little brighter. To see more photos of those who make a difference during the holiday season and throughout the year, browse our photo gallery at www.philarmh.org. Carlos Telchi, age 13, presents the proceeds of a flamenco dance show his parents hosted to benefit PRMH to Doug Metcalfe, our House Manager. Carlos and his family, from Florida, stayed at the House in 2009 during his treatment for a skull-based tumor. On December 17, families staying at the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House enjoyed a bit of cheer at the annual holiday party. Fred’s Foodsteps made the event extra special by being on hand to provide every member of every family with a brand new coat, hat, and pair of gloves, along with much-needed gas and shopping gift cards. Independence Blue Cross prepared the dinner at each House. The House is shown illuminated at our Share A Night Celebration at Chestnut Street. Each light on the House represents a donation made to support a family’s nightly stay.Thank you to our generous in-kind donors and entertainers for the events at both Houses including Holy Child Academy Drexel Hill Hand Bell Choir & Senior Choir,The Ridgeway Singers, the Sugar Plum Fairy from The Pennsylvania Ballet, Music Uniting Students in Caring (MUSIC) Club, Ronald McDonald, Coca-Cola, Victory Brewing Company, and Velvet Sky Bakery. Evans and Jimmy Murray joined children and families in helping Ann’s Cake Pan decorate a huge cake designed to look just like our House.Thank you to Ann’s Cake Pan for generously donating the cake and the students from Perelman Jewish Day School and Penn Alexander School for helping out with the celebration. Then, on Friday, November 6, over 800 guests gathered at the Please Touch Museum to continue the festivities. The big event featured the presentation of the first ever Dr. Audrey E.Evans Award of Excellence to Dr. Jean Bennett, Dr.Katherine High, and Dr. Albert Maguire for their groundbreaking work in reversing congenital childhood blindness, along with a speech by PRMH Family Room Coordinator and previous House guest Suzie Norvilas.Mayor Nutter also addressed the crowd. The party raised over $450,000 for the families we serve.Special thanks to the evening’s Honorary Chairs Marian & Norman Wolgin and Gini & Stu Peltz and Chairs Joan Emmi & Judy Boreham, along with all of the other wonderful sponsors, donors, and attendees who made the evening possible.
