U A L R E P O R T 2 0 0 5 H E A L , L E A R N , A N D G R O W T he theme of this year’s annual report is a focus on our mission: Helping Children, Families, and Communities to Heal, to Learn and to Grow. The graphic design of this report was inspired by the “Life Book,” a tool often used for adoptive children and their loved ones to record, document and celebrate their journeys in a tangible form. We chose this visual motif because, in many ways, Children’s Aid and Family Services has been on an important journey of its own, one that started more than 100 years ago and will extend long into the future. It is a journey worth sharing. And who better to tell the story than the children, adults and families who are most in need, and most affected by, Children’s Aid and Family Services? Thus, we have chosen to share the progress of our various services through the stories of those we serve. We hope you will come along on this journey. Perhaps you will discover something special to take away and incorporate into your own life. We also thank those of you who continue to generously empower us with your time, your hearts, your skills and your financial support. ist at A buddingTuarrrtell Center the H E A L , L E A R N , A S N D G R O W others pose ing developments; cit ex of ll fu e ar s ome year ad. Samantha* is a 12-year-old girl who was recently adopted after having been in foster care for many years. Her adoption was helped in large part by the child-specific recruitment approach that is being funded through a generous grant from “Wendy’s Wonderful Kids,” a signature program of the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption. Let Samantha tell you about it in her own words. “My name is Samantha and I am 12 years old. I was only about 2 years old, and my older sister was 3, when we had to stop living with our mother. I don’t remember much about my parents, but I think my mother was mean to us sometimes; I don’t know why. My older sister remembers more, and she has bad dreams and cries sometimes. We’re really close. I used to get angry a lot, especially when I was younger. The people in the foster homes were nice to me, but I didn’t trust them and was scared all the time. So I wasn’t very nice. I used to get into fights and things like that. “When I was 5, they put me in a PATH home (Pre-Adoptive Treatment Home), which was better. I got lots and lots of special attention and even my own therapist to talk to. I stayed there for five years. When I got to be 10, I really didn’t believe I would ever be adopted. But one day I met a family who said they wanted me. I couldn’t believe it. They really wanted me! I’ve been with my new family for more than six months now. We have lots of fun together. I feel like I finally have a ‘forever’ home, after all these years. It’s fun to be 12. I’m almost grown up. I see my sister a lot, too, and she’s doing really well. Even though we don’t live together, we’re really close. We talk about how someday we both might adopt children who need families, when we’re really all grown up and married. I think it’s a very special thing to do.” room My new bed *Names and certain details have been changed in line with HIPAA requirements to protect the privacy of our children. in The PATH home I lived 4 P roviding high quality child care for more than 30 years takes commitment, dedication and a sense of humor, all of which are shared by our caring staff. Recent additions to the Turrell Child Care & Early Learning Center in Paramus include a toy library, as well as two new infant rooms and a playroom that’s nearly complete. Malissa Jockish is a public school teacher and parent of two small children. She is also a former employee of Turrell. Her son attended the Center until the recent birth of his sister, at which time his mother went on maternity leave. Malissa says she would “recommend Turrell without hesitation to anyone looking for quality childcare and early education.” Now that’s an endorsement! Read on for more: “Like many moms, I work full-time. I’m a teacher and parent of two young children, a son and a daughter. With my son, my maternity leave seemed to fly by, and before I knew it, it was time to go back to work and arrange for childcare. Luckily, I didn’t have to look far. “Years ago, I was an employee of the Center, so I knew first-hand what a nurturing and supportive environment it was for little ones. I hadn’t been there in awhile, though, so I arranged for a tour. Boy, was I impressed! All of the staff was friendly, warm and helpful. The facilities were sparkling clean and well maintained. Best of all, the children were happy and well cared for. Without any hesitation, I enrolled my son. “Sandy Richards, the director of the Center, has been there almost 30 years, and she always took the time to speak with parents and got to know their children. My son’s teachers wrote a detailed ‘infant note’ every day, so I would know what he had eaten, how he had napped, etc. “It was a little sad to leave my son to return to work, but I knew he was in the best of hands. Placing our son in Turrell brought my husband and me peace of mind. It allowed us to go to work each day, knowing his needs were being met. We could see for ourselves that he was safe, happy and growing both socially and developmentally. Having a child care center I could trust put our minds at ease.” ~ Malissa Jockish ng book! i t s e r e t n i n a What 6 Playing in the infant room H E A L , L E A R N , A N D G R O W A t Children’s Aid and Family Services, sometimes people come to us for one reason, and then end up coming back later as volunteers or donors. This has been the case with both a single working mom and a hard-working family from an affluent town, both of whom relied on our “Baby Basics” program during a particularly lean time in their lives. Baby Basics provides formula and diapers to babies of low-income parents. Clients are allowed to participate for two years: they receive formula for one year and diapers for two years. Volunteers do all the shopping for diapers and formula, trying to get the best prices and accommodate the babies’ specific formula needs, within a budget. Here are two true stories of parents who were able to take care of their children thanks to this innovative program. “Both my wife and I work hard, but a few years ago we found ourselves with four children, a 7-year-old and triplets! During that time, we relied upon Baby Basics to help us make ends meet by supplying us with formula and diapers for the three babies. We ‘graduated’ from the program two years ago and since then, my wife often donates gently used clothing and I stop by with toys for the children served by the agency. We are so grateful for the help we received in a time of need.” – a vital ents s e d i v o r p par cs Baby Blaisnei for low-income life 8 “I’m a single working mother of two who made a little too much money to quality for WIC (Women, Infants, Children, a Federal program that provides formula but no diapers to children of low-income parents). For two years, the Baby Basics program helped me feed and diaper my children, for which I will be eternally grateful. Today, I do everything I can to help raise funds for this important program.” C hildren, adults and families today face pressures and challenges on many fronts, including economic, social and environmental. That’s why so many people rely on Family Counseling Service, a division of Children’s Aid and Family Services. Through innovative programs, superior instructors and a unique environment for learning and reflection, this community resource provides vital services to the families and youth of Bergen County. FCS offers solutions for real-life family issues, from educational and parenting workshops to mother-daughter yoga classes, from divorce support groups to individual therapy and crisis management. The following is the story of how the Social Skills program helped one 8-year-old make the transition from a struggling student with low self-esteem to a confident, aware and improving youngster. “I first brought my son, Michael, to the program because he could not focus in school; had trouble listening to instructions at school, sports and in cub scouts; and had been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). He also had speech difficulties, poor eye contact and low self-confidence. “Michael completed two phases of the Social Skills program at Family Counseling Service. This has been an extremely positive experience and influence on my son. The program helped my son identify the situations that were giving him problems, and the tools to deal with them more effectively. Michael really liked the group leaders, connecting to them and trusting in them. The group was conducted in such an easy, relaxed and rewarding way. That helped enormously. Today, my son is absolutely more confident and aware!” 10 ordinator, co s ill sk al ci so t, et dg lo Leandra B group leads a Social Skills T Memorable Moments in 2005 he Council On Accreditation reaccredited the agency through September 2009. The reaccredidation, which involved an in-depth examination of compliance with best practice standards, also included a review of human resources, financial and risk management, continuous quality improvement and 39 other service standards. The agency is proud of this achievement and is committed to continuously improving in all service areas. staff to work with severely traumatized children in collaboration and consultation with New Jersey Cares Institute. Family Counseling Service coordinated a treasure hunt to commemorate the event. Hundreds of children attending kindergarten through third grade in Ridgewood public schools and their families took part in fun activities together. •For the fourth year, Family Counseling Service coordinated the “Ready, Set, Relax!” family night. Originally based only in Ridgewood, the event extended its reach to four additional northern Bergen communities: Allendale, Ho-Ho-Kus, Saddle River, and Upper Saddle River. Families in each community spent a fun evening together relaxing and connecting. •Our eldercare staff helped a senior citizen at the Hackensack site realize her dream of becoming an American citizen. The client had never learned to read and had failed the citizenship exam three times. The staff in Hackensack didn’t give up on her, though, and through the creative use of a cassette recorder, helped her practice for the exam. She passed with flying colors! •This past spring, many local families ock The Burke Family of Glen R 14 Jim Kurz and Naziier Photo by Josephine Dvorken turned out for “Easter in Ridgewood,” an event highlighted by an Easter-themed poster contest. The contest, run by Ridgewood-based photographer Josephine Dvorken, was an astounding success. Ms. Dvorken raised $3,900 by offering reducedpriced portraits of the first 26 children whose parents made a donation to the agency. The following Ridgewood businesses also offered gift certificates to the families: Happy Tuesday, Kicks for Kids, Town & Country Apothecary and Fine Cosmetics, and the Silver Spoon gourmet food market. There was also a special treat from Oliver’s Chocolates. Bank of America and Flackman, Goodman & Potter, PA, each donated $500 to the agency, increasing the total proceeds of the event to nearly $5,000. •The Glen Rock MOM’s Club gave out backpacks laden with school supplies to 16 younger children in foster and PATH (Pre-Adoptive Treatment Homes) run by Children’s Aid and Family Services. The children received their back-to-school backpacks at an ice cream social hosted by the Ridgewood Ben & Jerry’s. The backpacks contained school supplies, a t-shirt and items donated from the Main Street, Hackensack Target store and the “P.S. I Love You” children’s gift store in Ridgewood. • This year marked the 40th anniversary of The Depot, a unique gift shop and the largest all-volunteer woman’s exchange in the nation. Thanks to the tireless efforts of hundreds of volunteers and the boutique’s unique items, The Depot has been able to donate more than $2 million dollars to the agency’s Family Counseling Service division. Bravo to The Depot! •Jim Kurz of Glen Rock participated in the Half Ironman Triathlon in Harriman State Park. Jim ran not just to test his physical strength and endurance, but also to collect donations to benefit Children’s Aid and Family Services, on behalf of his neighbor’s son, Naziier Brady, who was adopted through the agency. •The “Hollywood at Liberty” gala fundraiser was successful beyond expectations. Everyone had a rousing good time, and more important, the event raised substantial funds for the Thomas R.S. Burgin Educational Fund, which helps teens “aging out” of foster care programs to enroll in college or vocational school, and many other agency programs. •The agency’s website, www.cafsnj.org, underwent a complete makeover this year, resulting in a colorful, modern-looking and easier-to-use information resource. Be sure to visit it regularly, as well as www.njarch.com, the resource on adoption information. •On www.cafsnj.org, there are now videos of the children waiting to be adopted that users can access and watch. These adorable and poignant clips were created by Ted Burke, who generously lent his video and editing talents to the agency. The Burke Family has been involved with the agency for many years, and served in the Boarder Babies program. 2 0 0 5 A N N U A L R E C O G N I T I O N Parent L I S T I N G Susan M.
