I would like to thank everyone who has attended and took advantage of the many events the club has offered this year. I think we had a whole lot of fun at the picnic, the meetings, the car shows and the many races we planned this year. It has been fun serving all of you as President this year. I hope that it will continue to be as rewarding for all of us just as it has been in the past. We have some people in the club who are going faster than ever and some who are still working on their projects. We look forward to seeing all the new mods and upgrades during the next year. It has been a pleasure working for the club this year and look forward to being a part of LSPBC for the years to come. I would like to see more members attend the events and take advantage of what the club has to offer. Congratulations to all the winners of the racing events this year. It was fun watching those chosen few go all the way to the winners circle. Watch out next year though! We still have a few events for the year, the Christmas party, dyno event, the Temple race and our November car show. Make plans now so you can attend! Rick Kinworthy LSPBC President A Word From the Vice President CAUTION! Your Vice President is rambling. Hehehehehehe- Naw just kidding! I hope everyone has enjoyed 2005 so far. I know I have. If you have been unable to make any events thus far, there is still a lot of time left. With the upcoming club dyno event, our last Chucks show, the LSPBC Xmas party and the rescheduled Brand X Bash, there should be something out there for every member. There have been a lot of new members sign up lately. Welcome aboard! Some I have met. Some I have not? I want to personally invite each and every one of you to all of the upcoming events. Come on out and enjoy the club, I look forward to meeting each and every one of you. Here are a few of the new members, sorry if I missed you: Geoff Chappell Plano, TX. Luke Figg Frisco, TX. Everyone was very impressed with member Rob Pahl’s (Captain Rob) beautiful Factory Five 65 Cobra. This awesome 3.8 Buick turbo powered Cobra had just recently been completed. We all can’t wait to see what kind of numbers this low weight beast will generate! The catered food was great and the setting could not have been better. Pictured: Members Rob & Tammy Downey, John Martin, Geoff Newton and Kyle Faulkner wait in line for juicy smoked hamburgers and hot dogs. Everyone, especially the kids, had a great time fishing in the large Malouf pond. Several nice catches of fine catfish, bass and crappie were landed. LSPBC’s Big Bad Annual Picnic The newly completed pier was spacious and large enough for all the members to sit, eat and enjoy the breeze. Newlyweds Greg and Sheri Kring enjoy the time to relax and hang out with the rest of the Buick clan. Member Mitch Smith and LSPBC Race Director Patrick Smith (no relation) hang out and talk about how the upcoming TA motor is progressing. Watch out for Patrick next year racers! Victor Segovia’s son readies his fishing pole to try to catch the big one. A Review of This Year’s Racing Season - By Rob Downey From A First Timer’s Point of View Because I have never raced in an official format for points and money (at least not legally), I was not sure what to expect. I had never before bracket raced in my life until I went to Temple in the early spring of this year. Sure, I had been to the track a million times for street racing and test and tune nights, but; it was never for season points, club events and etc. It turned out to be a very exciting year, with the final winnings up for grabs through the last race in October. I was surprised that even my wife became excited about going every month. The only race she missed was the very first one. It all started with the Temple Brand-X Bash. I won the first elimination race that I had ever raced in. I then knew that I was ready to make a run at it this season. Unfortunately, the rain set in and the 2nd round never came to pass. After that, I was fired up to race with the club this season. So, I went out and got a trailer to tow the old GN to the track because Redline is about 100 miles away for us. The April Race started the season off with a bang…the bang of a good kind and not that of a turbo motor going up in smoke. My first full competition event resulted in a 3rd place finish for me. I was ecstatic! That night, Ron Britton came in 1st, Carl Brimer took 2nd, Davis Ellis took 4th place and the season was ON! The May Race caused the excitement for me to accelerate even more! I ended up with another 3rd place finish. Tim Winn came in 1st with a final round win over Kyle Faulkner and Zack Morris took the 4th place honors. With the completion of season race 2, the points race for the year continued on. Ron Britton remained 1st in points. Carl Brimer and I were now tied for 2nd place! As the June Race unfolded and the adrenaline started to rise, so did the temperature. At this point I had to make sure every race counted in order to stay in the season points race. The Saturday evenings that were usually spent out on the boat had to come to an end, at least on race day. June was a month of shakeups for the leaders. David Ellis ended up winning 1st place, Bob Schuck came in 2nd, Randy McCall won 3rd and Kyle Faulkner took 4th place. As far as the season points were concerned, I was pushed down to 3rd place, and; Ron Britton was pushed down to 4th place as the new leaders emerged. David Ellis and Bob Schuck were now holding the 1st and 2nd place slots respectively. The heat really cranked up in July. With temperatures nearing 100 degrees, our cars began to run a bit slower. My excitement had also dropped a little after not winning in June. This made it really difficult to leave my lake buddies and head for the track when the temperatures were so high. Then the fire was rekindled by my earning another 3rd place finish in the July race. Bob Schuck won 1st place, pushing him even further up in the points ladder. Victor Segovia took 2nd place and David Lewis rounded out with a 4th place finish. As for the season points, this put Bob on top with 135 points, I was now in 2nd place with 110 points, David Ellis fell to 3rd and Carl Brimer moved back up into 4th place. With a renewed spirit, August came quickly and the heat continued on both the track and outside. August brought with it another round of shakeups. I unfortunately red lighted for the first time in my life so I was out early. David Ellis won 1st moving him into 1st place for the points race. David Lewis came in 2nd, new member Dave Whitten placed 3rd and Geoff Newton came in 4th with his first placement of the season! Congratulations to Geoff! As for the points race, David Ellis was now in 1st place, Bob Schuck trailed only 5 points behind for 2nd, somehow I only fell to 3rd place and Ron Britton came back up to the 4th position. The heat didn’t let up for September as I had hoped it would, but; coming in 3rd place in 3 of the last 5 races, I knew something had to give. The September race resulted in me taking 2nd place for the first time, just barely losing out to Kyle Faulkner in the finals. Bob Schuck rounded out 3rd and David Ellis took 4th. The top three points leaders all placed in this race. This made the points race extremely close with only 20 points separating 3rd place from 1st place. David Ellis held on to 1st place with Bob in 2nd, myself in 3rd and David Lewis rounded up 4th. October was to be the race of the season with the top points leaders so close. With free admission and a double payout, everyone would be there! For me, I guess the adrenaline got the best of me. I was out early with a red light again! The nearest competitor behind me in points was 40 points down so, I had at least finished the year in the top 4. The race ended up being a nail biter up to the semi-finals. Bob and David were dueling it out and making it through each round. Unfortunately for David Ellis, he red lighted in the semi-finals leaving the year winnings to Bob Schuck. Then before the final round could be ran, the track was covered with oil and the final race was never completed. As a result, the racers agreed to split the winnings. It did not matter for the points race, it had been already decided with Bob Schuck winning it all for the season, David Ellis coming in 2nd, myself coming in 3rd, and Ron Britton bringing up 4th place for the season. Overall, it was a very exciting year, and we all can’t wait for the season to start next year. And if you have been sitting on the side lines, not coming out to race with the club, what are you waiting for? You can join the action in Temple on December 3rd! I feel that I had a great season since I had never bracket raced or competed in an official points race before. Especially, since I never fell below 3rd place all year. I would like to give a special thanks to Rick Kinworthy who gave me a lot of pointers during that first race in Temple this year. Another important thing to remember as a racer in the club, is that the club makes most of it’s money from the car shows. In order to maintain the payouts for the races, we need car show participation from you as well. No matter what shape you car is in, it is important to bring your Buick out to some of the shows each year. If you are going to race and win money, then come out and help support the club at the car shows too. - RD LSPBC Drag Racing Series Thanks to everyone who participated. See ya next year! LSPBC President Rick Kinworthy and member Erin Walker were married August 27, 2005 at St. Vincent’s in Arlington, Texas. Who needs a limo when you are in a hurry to start the honeymoon? A low 11 second (acheum!) GN does the trick just fine! The newlyweds spent their week long honeymoon sightseeing various parts of Colorado and Utah from an RV. Members Greg Kring and Sheri White were married February 26, 2005 at Wedgewood Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas. Ok, how about leaving the church in a low 9 second GN (cage and all!) when you are in a REAL hurry to get your honeymoon started?!! The newlyweds vacationed for a week to various ports around Mexico on an all inclusive cruise ship. Victor and Sandy Segovia are the proud parents of a new baby girl. Isabel Bren Segovia was born on September 28, 2005 around 3:26pm at Doctors Hospital in Dallas. She was 8 lbs 3.5 oz and 21 inches long at the time of birth. She is healthy and born with a FULL (obviously taking after her father) head of hair. Both her and her Mama are doing well living it up at home. Mr. & Mrs. Rob Pinkston are also the proud parents of a new baby girl. Lauryn Joan Pinkston was born on July 27, 2005 around 1:00pm . She was 5 lbs 8oz at the time of birth. Ford Event A large group of Texas racers met at the Love’s Truck Stop in Denton, Texas at “high noon” on Friday. After grabbing some lunch and fuel, the caravan of Buicks made their way into Oklahoma. The racetrack graciously allowed us to enter the pit area Friday at 3:00pm even though the gates did not officially open until 6:00pm. Here Erika Alberti, Denise Hosack, Erin Kinworthy, Rick Kinworthy and Mitch Smith hang out and swap stories during the Friday night time trial session. LSPBC Webmaster Danny Oviedo takes his turn to cook some hamburgers along with Erin Kinworthy and Mitch Smith. Victor Segovia set the tone of the caravan’s journey with his nice Buick T-Type. A common scene repeated throughout the pit area. Here LSPBC President Rick Kinworthy changes the plugs and makes several adjustments to get more horsepower out of his combination. We will additionally be having a short awards ceremony after lunch. Don’t forget to bring your designated dish if you signed up. Morgan’s address is: We look forward to seeing each of you there! The Wolfe Race Craft GN Rear Suspension - A Brief Look There are several of you out there with Buick GN’s that are experiencing the same or similar problems. You have installed air bags to help control body roll, but; the hit of the launch is now causing them to rebound and unload the rear tires. Wolfe Race Craft is one manufacturer that seems to have a solution to this problem. Unfortunately, this system is not recommended for the street due to the change in its handling characteristics. However, Rick Kinworthy is now using this system and states that it seems to be fine for the occasional street excursion. Here we will look at a very basic synopsis of this installation by Rick on his own Buick. This is not intended to be entirely instructional, but; rather to provide you with a good general idea as to this system’s capabilities. - CB In this picture (courtesy of Wolfe) you can see how the attachment points are welded to the rear axle tubes. Note the adjustability available to tune the suspension. Here you can see the components of the kit that will arrive at your door. Many of the included components are weight conscious through the use of light steel and aluminum. Here, Rick is removing the rear end’s stock rubber bushings for the upper control arms. This can virtually only be achieved with a special tool that can be purchased from HR Parts N Stuff. Without it you are likely to end up with only bloody knuckles or breaking the ears off the rear! Here, the upper sway bar has been squared and welded in between the frame rails directly above the rear end housing in front of the spring perches. This enables independent adjustments to change the preload setings. This should result in the elimination of “body twist”. It is also notable that the included bushings are lubricated using the supplied grease fittings. Here is a close up of the spherical bushings that should come with your kit. As you can see, they are far superior to the stock rubber bushings. The Wolfe Race Craft GN Rear Suspension - A Brief Look The provided spherical bushings are easily installed from either side by screwing them together with a pair of large wrenches. Don’t forget the Loc-Tite! The included upper and lower control arms are double adjustable and come with solid rod ends. These replace the stock arms which are prone to twist and flex under heavy acceleration. Without them you are likely to chip a tooth from the ensuing wheel hop. The proof is in this picture taken shortly after his install. Notice the notorious rebound bounce has been eliminated with the suspension firmly planted evenly. And of course you can also notice a little air under the front tires as well here! No changes to any other part of his setup were made beyond the additional suspension parts. This setup helped Rick reduce his 60ft times as much as .20 - .25 seconds. It also reduced his 8th mile times as much as .50. That is a huge difference! When you reach this level it will be very hard to find .50 for less than $800.00 anywhere. - CB LSPBC Classifieds For Sale: (1) 72 Buick 350 cast iron intake I will sacrifice the following: (1) 73 Buick 455 cast iron intake Century brand high back Camper top painted (Bill Duke) factory GM color (Pewter) Fits 2001 and newer Long Bed 2500 Chevy/GMC Pickup Slider windows in front and on sides Inside light All aluminum correct bed clamps included Excellent Condition $400 Firm You pick it up in Arlington Mitch Smith (817) 808-8213 For Sale: 36lb injectors w/extender chip $125.00 Front cross braces ( these are up front V in shape when installed) $25.00 Strip chip Jay Carter 110 for stock injectors $25.00 (1) 72 Buick 350 block w/ mains std bore (1) 73 Buick 455 block with mains needs 2 sleeves on rear cylinders (1) 72 Buick Skylark GS GSX deck lid in nice shape (1) 72 Buick Skylark rolling chassis with body shell and clear TX title.
