LGBT YOUTH SCOTLAND
Rabbit's Progress
Bisexual MSP Patrick Harvie has been
appointed as co-convenor of the
Scottish Green Party. He is also a Vice
President of the Gay and Lesbian
Humanists.
Jodie Fleming Writes: The people at LGBT Youth Scotland have
been busy bees and have a plethora of interesting opportunities on
offer for all. The commencement of their adult volunteering
programme has meant they have the resources to put on even more
events to bring the community together.
The Events and Resources team have been hard at work on the
scene, selling everything from ribbons and raffle tickets, to mulled
wine and kisses over World AIDS Day weekend! The Blue Moon
raised an impressive £190 through donations; Planet Out gathered
an amazing £350 through ribbon sales, drinks promos, dj requests
and staff kisses; and Habana topped the billing with a whopping
£550 from ribbon sales, mulled wine, donations and a fantastic
raffle - you really can get something back from giving!
Proving that volunteering can be fun and sexy, the Events and
Resources team have already come up with some great stuff for
LGBT History Month. On Saturday 31st January, they will be
holding their first ever LGBT Swap Shop. Do you struggle with
being given the wrong gender Xmas present? Do you dread the
New Year? At a time of year which can be isolating and bleak for
many, this is a time to come together and celebrate 2009 by getting
Jessica and Lynz help out. Pic by Jodie Fleming
out with your old and in with someone else’s new! So bring along
your unwanted clothes, Xmas pressies and bric-a-brac and swap it for someone else’s.
With New Year’s resolutions a-plenty, many aspire to ‘get fit’ and the team at LGBT Youth are planning fun and
creative ways to do this. Watch this space for ideas afoot such as the first ever LGBT walk/run in Edinburgh.
If you are interested in volunteering with LGBT Youth Scotland, they are campaigning for volunteers throughout
Scotland. If you live in Edinburgh, Glasgow or Tayside and would like to get involved, either as a volunteer or as a
participant, please get in touch. Likewise if you live in Edinburgh and would like to attend the LGBT swap shop, or
have donations you would like to contribute, please contact the team. Your community needs you!

The scene is simply overflowing with
mulled wine, with festive decs adorning all
of our favourite scene venues. And both
GHQ and CC Blooms have an extended 5am
drinking license for the whole of the
Xmas/New Year period. Woohooo – extra
drinkies!
On Xmas Eve, Café Habana promise
the best cabaret in town - with the return of
the amazing Miss Scarlet Diamond, and the
very best of Miss Coco Chanel. A show not
to be missed – and they’ve put it that bit
earlier for those not wanting to be too
hungover for Xmas!
If your inner party animal takes over on
Xmas Day, then there’s only one place for
you to be! Taste are holding their 15th
Annual Taste Escape Xmas Day Party. This
year it will be held at The GRV in Guthrie
Street, and features their resident DJs Fisher
& Price and Miss Chris, from 11-5am. You
can pay on the door, or book tickets on line
at www.taste-clubs.com. Book in advance to
avoid disappointment – although tickets can
be bought at the door too.
GHQ are also open on Xmas day, hosted
by DJ JT. All that dancing and cavorting is
the perfect opportunity to get workin’ on
those Xmas dinner calories! And GHQ are
offering their very own Xmas sale, with huge
reductions on all drinks on Boxing Day. At
Picardy Place, Cilla and Michelle will be
keeping the festive atmosphere alive with
fun, games and their usual hilarity.
The Tackno Xmas special is this year
being hosted at the gorgeously
festive and Voodoo Rooms, on
Sunday 28th December. With
Archangel Fancy Nancy and her
horny little devils hosting at the
pearly gates, the theme is ‘Heaven
and Hell. Saints and sinners alike
can worship at the Tackno alter,
with wicked tunes from ‘Devil
Woman’ herself and guests!
Opening at 10.30pm, the dress
code is ‘Horns and Halos’ and
entry fee concession is given to all
in costume!
I imagine there’s many a
scene goer hankering after a bit of
the oh-so-sad-that-it’s-now-over
X-Factor. So you will be pleased to
know that Austin will be doing a
PA at GHQ on Saturday 31st
December, as part of their New
Year extravaganza.
And after that, starting the
New Year off in style is the big
Taste New Years Day Party at The
Liquid Rooms, on Thurday 1st
January. Their resident DJs Fisher
& Price and Miss Chris will be
entertaining the masses in their
usual fantastic way from 11pm5am, again with the option of
either paying at the door (entry is
£8 members/£10 non-members)
or booking on-line in advance
www.taste-clubs.com
Poptastic is hosted at GHQ on
Friday 2nd January, with their DJs
playing a variety of indie, electro,
retropop and trash. Again, drinks
promos and extended opening hours ensure
this will be one hell of a party.
The Blue Moon Café invites us all to
celebrate with them during a week of parties
beginning on Saturday 31st January, and
culminating in a Big Celebratory Party on
Saturday 7th February. During this party
week you may look forward to Musical
Events; Comedy; Revivals; Fund-raisers; an
Ex Owners & Staff Party; and more: and
most importantly meeting up with old
friends and new… watch this space for
more info and updates… The Blue Moon
appeals to former owners and staff to get in
touch before the week of parties; and also
appeals to people to hand in pictures or
memories of the Café to make a display
collage of the history of our LGBT Café’s 21
years of serving our LGBT Community; from
its roots in its predecessor The Stonewall
Café which was the 1st LGBT Café in
Scotland, and the 2nd in the UK by only 1
day! So get those pictures and memories
out of your closet, and let’s take a trip back
to the beginnings of our LGBT Community
to see how independent, rebellious,
groundbreaking, and sexy we all were in the
80’s, 90’s and the naughties too!
When it’s time to make those New
Year’s resolutions – what are yours going to
be? Mine as always is to be more active.
And the LGBT Centre for Health and
Wellbeing has the very thing to make sure
this actually happens! They are launching
their January Active programme on
Saturday 10th January, from 11am-1pm.
So whether you want to get more active, or
simply want to meet new people, come
along and you will have the opportunity to
try out some fun new activities. Have you
ever wanted to try your hand at juggling or
plate spinning? Or have you ever wanted to
learn the skills to help defend yourself?
There will also be a chance to sign up to a
fantastic range of new courses including
badminton, yoga, performance poetry,
circus skills, indoor climbing and selfdefence. The January Active launch aims to
be a fun and relaxed event - you can take
part in as little or as much as you like! If
you haven’t been to the Centre before than
this is an ideal opportunity to come and
learn more about what we do. There will be
lots of information available on the day
about the community groups that meet at
the Centre, and they plan to unveil some of
their plans for the coming year… This is an
afternoon that must not be missed. And at
the very convenient time - you still have
plenty of time left to treasure hunt in those
January sales! For more info, E-mail:

First up, the editor has been raving in
anticipation of an upcoming MSC Scotland
event. The MSC were founded in 1974, and
have been in continuous existence ever
since - so 2009 will see them celebrating
their 35th anniversary. 2009 is also the
250th anniversary of Burns’s birth, which is
why they are holding this very special series
of events. Their club, and other clubs, are
usually described as ‘leather clubs’. But
MSC member’s interests are today wider
than that.
MSC Scotland cater for any male for
whom sex is enhanced by role playing, or by
fetishes. Members are usually interested in
dress codes, and they enjoy dressing
appropriately, but these include skinhead,
military, denim etc. as well as leather. Some
members are interested in SM, watersports,
etc., and through MSC they can find a safe
environment for exploring these interests.
But this is in no way a requirement. So if
you’re a man interested or curious about
what it’s all about check out their weekend
of events at the end of January. See below
on this page for details , visit www.mscscotland.net or E-mail:
president@msc-scotland.net
The favourite MSC Scotland haunt is the
New Town Bar, news of their Xmas/New
Year events is coming soon, but the Wii Play
nights from 7pm every Monday are always a
hoot. Check out their website
www.newtownbar.co.uk for the latest info.

HIGHLANDS
(I don’t follow the scene - I AM the scene)
ou will never believe this but…. It’s
Christmas!!!! Yes that was sarcasm
and no this is not my favourite time of
year. Though my birthday is on New Year’s
Day and secretly I like to kid myself on that
you all come out on that day just for me!
Before we start can I just say to all the
people who were in Delmonica’s for charity
week and refused to donate, SHAME ON
YOU! Anyways that’s all in the past let’s
zoom forward to the future and give you the
highs and lows on the scene this month.
Beginning with all time favourite and
general good time gal with the funniest staff
around (I’m becoming a bit of a bar fly these
days due to their banter…) Bunties! They
have the following going on for the festive
season; On Saturday 20th December, Alan
Turner From X-Factor appearing Live At
Bennets At 1am which leads onto Saturday
27th December, Karen Danzig makes a
fantastic return, appearing Live At Bennets
At 1am plus a very special guest, Vk/Vs
£1.70, Orange Breezers £2.00 . And I have a
message from the management “Please
don’t forget we are open on Tuesdays with
drinks starting from £1.00 and Thursdays,
all drinks are £2.00 !! And On Fridays and
Saturdays, Drinks Start From £1.70 & Shots
Start From £1.50 With both floors open!!”.
Can I get my free drink for passing that on
now please?!?!? I am literally LOLling to
myself here…. (yes times are that hard and
I am that cheap…). Bennets also have a
‘New Sunday Drinks Promotion’ which is a
fantastic way to round off your weekends,
with drinks starting from £1.00.
Moving on err swiftly for all you Polo
punters who break into a sweat at the
mention of your social soiree nemesis….
Here is the Polo Xmas line-up. Kickin off the
festivities will be Rosie Mazone on Tuesday
23rd December fresh from winning Del’s Got
Talent with an acoustic guitar session round
the fire in the Lounge, check out her video of
the Glasgow version of “Foundations”. Top
that up with a dash of everyones fav
Glaswegian lass, Michelle McManus in the
Club on Xmas Eve with £1 - where else you
gonna go??
Sunday 28th December sees top tribute
band “Kitty Kat Dolls” performing in-house one not to be missed, these guys have had a
lot of media attention! Rounding off
December will be Livin’ Joy (Dreamer &
Don’t Stop Movin’) with some classic old
skool dance!! Oh god the memories I have
from that song, it was all cider and
snogging….
Those were indeed the days! January
brings the massively popular - Austin from
Xfactor. There by massive request
apparently although when I find out who
was making these requests I thoroughly
intend on bitch slapping them. I thought
good taste and being gay went hand in
hand?!?! Obviously not. Polo says “This
promises to be one not to miss as this
heartthrob will be getting up close and
personal with all his fans!” I say- “no thank
you very much….”

ScotsGay has been hearing good things
about The Waterloo Bar’s Sunday night
Bingo hosted by the incomparable Cheri
Treiffel, this is proper entertainment of the
old school from Scotland’s oldest gay bar!
Xmas and 2009 events at the Waterloo are
not known as we go to press so check out
their website www.waterloobar.co.uk for the
latest
If you fancy something totally different
then why not head to my homeland of the
West End to see Miss Elaine C.Smith (aka
gay weegie icon extraordinaire) who is
performing in Oran Mor on Byres Road
between Friday 19th-Sunday 21st December
with tickets priced at £20 and can be bought
from www.ticketweb.co.uk This venue is
gorgeous and the timeless classic that is
Byres Road is one area all you classy gays
should be retreating to! Remember to pop
into mine for a glass of sherry!
So- Speakeasy, what the hell is going
on???? You started with such high hopes
and expectations this year and now look at
the bloody state of you! So far cannot find
any promotions or plans from this venue but
I did try! Rant over.
To Delmonica’s (high five for all the
hard work from the staff over charity week,
it was pulled well and truly out the bag and
was phenomenal!) They have a Christmas
rundown which is so good it’s worth the
liver damage and mounting credit card bills
at www.delmonicas.com - much too much
to list here….
For all of you feeling peckish over the
festive season, The MED Café is doing
Christmas lunches until the Tuesday 23rd
December and a four course dinner for all
you extra greedy bastards! Also in the MED,
Francine is now back on Friday nights and
the most lovely of couples Maureen and Rae
are doing their karaoke ‘thang’ on Saturday
nights.
Last but not least for those of you
wanting another reason to shout “he’s
behind you” other than when my good
friend Gary Gossip is on the prowl…. The
pantomime of The Wizard of Oz is already
proving a massive hit and is on until
Saturday 3rd January at The Citizens
Theatre with tickets ranging between £12
and £17 (depending on how cheap you are
obviously).
Well ladies, the game’s a bogey and it’s
time to say over and out! Merry Christmas,
Happy New Year and all that jazz. Egg nog
anyone?????
he New Year gets off to a good start at
Terrence Higgins Trust Scotland with
three new initiatives. To increase our
support for the LGBT community in
Highland we are starting a monthly social
evening for MSM - men who have sex with
men (whether they identify as being gay,
bisexual or not) and a monthly social
evening for WSW - women who have sex
with women (whether they identify as being
lesbian, bisexual or not) in Inverness. Just
come along, chill out, bring some friends,
and meet some new people in the cosy
sitting room at THT. We are very happy to
welcome you.
The first MSM evening takes place on
Monday 7th January and the first WSW
evening on Wednesday 28th January at THT,
34 Waterloo Place, Inverness.
From this month onwards a philosophy
club will open its doors at THT, maybe I
should say open its gates because the name
of this club is the Pink Castle. The ‘Pink
Castle’ is a place and an opportunity for
friends of Terrence Higgins Trust Scotland to
stretch their minds within an atmosphere of
peace and fun. These philosophy evenings
will take place on a monthly basis at THT,
Inverness and will be facilitated by Morgan.
We would like to open the ‘castle gates’ with
the following question: “Safe sex could
save my life so I can live it to the full.”
If we all know this then why is the rate of
sexually transmitted infections, such as
HIV, soaring? Knowing does not seem to
result in doing. Is heart locked in a battle
with mind? What do you think? What do

DUNDEE
ey folks, welcome to another round up
of what is up in Dundee. Well kind of,
despite my heroic efforts going out
and getting pissed on several occasions this
week I’ve not always been able to catch up
with the people in the know, so I’m going to
try fill in the blanks the best I can.
Right first bit of gossip I do have, Joyce
– who runs the Gauger – is adamant that
she will have a new club open in early 2009
to offer direct competition with Out. She was
tight lipped on details, and just how far
ahead her plans are I don’t know, but it will
be interesting to see where this goes. I’ve
also been reliably informed that Ross, the
DJ in the Gauger, has an alibi for a recent
armed van robbery, the uncanny
resemblance with the photofit in The Sun
being pure chance!
I’m not too sure what the opening
times are at the Gauger over the festive
period, except there is a Hogmanay party on
the 31st, from 8pm. Tickets are available
from the bar at £2 per head, and all
proceeds will be going to the Frances Wright
pre-school centre mini bus fund.
Along at Brooklyn’s - they are open

Wednesday through to Sunday, Wednesday
and Friday karaoke with Suzie, free quiz
nights with some great prizes every
alternate Thursday, DJ on Saturdays and
karaoke with Robert on Sundays. There are
the usual great prices on drink - my
personal favourite being Jack Daniels and
cola for £2!!! – as well as other offers
throughout the week. Out is open on the
same evenings, and both are open
throughout the festive period except
Thursday 1st January.
Jocks Sauna will be closed on
December 25th, 26th, 31st and January 1st.
Aside from these days it is open all week,
Noon-10pm Sunday to Thursday and Noon11pm Friday and Saturdays. The
first themed night is set for Tuesday 20th
January, as a sportswear night - footie kit,
jock straps or swim wear welcome!
The Diversitay switchboard will be
open the two Mondays over the festive
period, and the guys and gals who volunteer
their time with this group will be doing
outreach leading up to Xmas. Other news
from Diversitay: following the success of
the women’s disco in November another
has been planned for the beginning of March
– more details to follow; Diversitay’s trans
group ‘Tea with Biscuits’ will be meeting on
the third Thursday in January; the
Diversitay newsletter will be out in January;
and finally ladies, to get the local lesbian and

Finally, I wish Duncan and his partner
Graham a speedy recovery from a recent
homophobic attack in the Hilltown that has
landed Duncan in hospital. It has left those
who know him shocked that such a nice guy
could end up in this situation, and some
disappointed with the reaction of the police.
Anyway a Merry Xmas, and all the best for
the New Year!

THE LUVVIES LGBT THEATRE COMPANY
David Dalzell, The Luvvies’ Chair
reports:
What a 2008 this has been for the
Luvvies - ambitious, successful and
challenging! These are words that are
beginning to become regularly
associated with The Luvvies, in
a year that celebrated both gender and
Shakespeare!
Painted Eggs
Congratulations to Nicole Dolder, Ken
Nicholson and Lizzie Cook for
respectively writing, directing and
producing a new, home grown piece
of theatre. A new writer in our midst!
The Luvvies were proud to showcase
a new piece of work looking into the
world of transsexual life, with the
drama and humour that is inherent in
these journeys. This large scale
project, being new and unknown in
the theatre going community, gave
challenges on many fronts, all of
which were met, with the dedication
and commitment we have come to
expect from The Luvvies. It also
provided the opportunity to bring in
new actors, who have gone on to act
in later projects for example...
Roma & Juliet
The all female/trans version of Romeo
& Juliet was a short innovative film.
With the fine transition of Katy
Dimmock’s Producer role from stage
to screen, the new edition of Rachna
Dheer’s vision and directorial debut,
and the exhaustive energies of Nicole
Dolder in supporting production and
editorial, this project took a year to
develop and produce, and has shown
that The Luvvies are capable of not
only shorter stage runs, but also,
long-term projects which require
stamina and complicated planning. On
the back of this, an exciting new film
project will soon be underway - a
LGBT Carry-On-esque picture is being
planned. Watch this space.
Squeaking Cleopatras
This featured exerts from
Shakespeare’s work by an all male
cast playing both male and female
roles. Big thanks to Pamela
MacGregor for her contributions to
marketing and front of house - what a
marvellous job, and to Anita Sauvage
for her magic touch with costumes!
And to Mads Mitchell, for her flexible
help with production - going above
and beyond the call of duty!
Congratulations to Ruth Corrigan for
her debut as Producer - damn are we
proud we found her first! This marks
Ruth’s first of many production
credits - she’s a natural. And Lloyd
Llewellyn-Jones’ directorial expertise
brought with it an energy and
enjoyment in the rehearsal phase that
carried over to the stage. Is it possible
for seven actors to have so much fun
on stage? Audience remarks of ‘joyful
Shakespeare’ and ‘a triumph’ have
given The Luvvies a stepping stone to
next year, raising both our profile and
our reputation.
Thanks to:
Waverley Care, the LGBT Centre on
Broughton Street and the Centre for
Health and Wellbeing on Howe Street.
Thanks also to Awards for All. We
successfully achieved funding for this
year’s projects from the Big Lottery
and Awards for All.
Thank you Katy Dimmock with helping
me put the Awards for All application
together, and to Lewis from Loud &
Proud for being our referee!
A fuller version of this report will soon
be available at www.theluvvies.org
Next year and beyond...
This Year’s Thing
Scotland marks the 40th anniversary
of the Stonewall Riot in this brand
new play written by Nicole Dolder
based on a piece of community
writing workshoped by members of
The Luvvie Babes.
The Wizard of Oz - a Homage to Judy
Garland
Another 40th anniversary - that of the
death of our own Judy Garland. This
will be a Showcase of her artistic work
featuring vinettes and songs from
radio/writing/film versions of the
Wizard of Oz.
Queer
The Luvvies is planning to further
develop its support of Scottish new
writing with a production of Steven
Dow-Cowan’s brand new play.
Finally, in case you missed it Lloyd Llewellyn-Jones’ Squeaking
Cleopatras success will be back in
2009 for a run on the Edinburgh
Fringe! Marvellous!
