DISTRIBUTION
MARKET IN THE
CIS COUNTRIES
FOCUS
№10 24 December, 2012
In attempts to study cinema distribution market in the CIS countries we face the problem of unavailability
of the exact figures of films box-offices and admissions on separate territories. So-called major scheme
when distributor share income with cinema according to the pre set proportion is implemented in such
countries as Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan. The main barrier for major box-office scheme implementation on the territory of CIS is the inability of the cinemas to provide distributors with an accurate data about
the number of tickets sold. This problem is common for the cinemas in Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus,
Georgia, Moldova, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.
On the other hand cinema markets of some CIS countries are so small that copyright holders are not interested in dealing with them and sell Russian distributors theatrical rights for all CIS territories. In their turn
distributors sell cinema rights for the fixed fee and they are not interested in promoting the project on local
market and don’t care about the box-office. We’ll try to estimate these markets taking into account the
only indicator available – the level of cinema chain development.
Today we present an overview of local cinema markets of Armenia, Belarus, Georgia and Uzbekistan.
ARMENIA
To tell the truth, there is no any cinema distribution market in Armenia. In the capital city of this country
– Yerevan – there are two operating cinemas. One of them is Nairi Cinema that belongs to the company
ULISS. In 2008-2011 the cinema was leased and operated by Paradise Company – the operator of Five
Stars cinema chain in Russia. In April 2011 Nairi was closed. Six months later it resumed work. Now it is
operated by another lease holder – National Cinema Development Foundation founded by Gevorg Gevorgyan, Director of the National Cinema Center of Armenia. In the cinema there is one auditorium with 260
seats and digital projection equipment installed.
Nairi Cinema is one of the venues of the Yerevan International Film Festival “Golden Apricot”. At the same
time the main events of the festival are usually carried out in Moscow Cinema operated by Paradise Company.
Moscow Cinema is a modern 4-screen multiplex. Digital projection equipment is installed in one of its
two large auditoriums. In the two small auditoriums films are exhibited on DVDs. The only multiplex in the
country is actually the monopolist on the local market. But the company is not going to expand the cinema
chain.
Nairi Cinema
October cinema renovated and improved by Paradise Company in Gumri (Leninakan) is still not profitable.
According to Armen Badalyan, programming director of Paradise Company, the company cooperates with
the Russian subsidiaries of Hollywood majors providing the Armenian cinema with the new films for the
fixed fee. Some 60 films are released during the whole year. The projects from Paradise’s slate form one
fourth of the total number of features exhibited in Moscow Cinema. Ticket prices start from 500 Armenian dram (AMD) ($1.2) The most expensive tickets for the evening shows of 3D features cost 2000 AMD
($4.8). In Armenia the most popular blockbuster is watched by 6-to-7 thousand viewers. So the box-office
may total $20 000.
Armenian private businessmen are not interested in operating cinemas. For the first time since 2000 a new
payer comes to the local market. And this player comes from Russia – the company that operates Russian
cinema chain Cinema Star is the operator of the new multiplex that is supposed to be launched in shopping
and recreation center Dalma Garden Mall.

Republic of Belarus is one of the CIS countries where the national cinema chain is owned by the state as
well as industrial enterprises. The Ministry of Culture yet didn’t approve the unified strategy of the industry
development. In some regions cinemas are controlled by the Ministry, and in the others they are affiliated
to regional and district executive bodies. So it’s almost impossible to get the information on their operability and the exact number of screens. At the same time according to the “Culture of Belarus” state program
for 2011-2015 the funds for re-equipment and reconstruction of the national cinema chain are provided
by the state.

Private businessmen are not interested in operating cinemas in Belarus. According to the official information the only private digital cinema is operated in Mogilev, another one, Rubin Plaza in Minsk, was shut
down not so long ago.
Cinema operators usually pay the local intermediaries of Moscow film distributors a fixed fee for the exhibition rights. Major right holders and international film distributors trust the premiere releases only to the
companies with a guaranteed income. One of them is Minsk unitary company Kinovideoprokat that signed
direct long-term contracts with the Russian subsidiaries of the Hollywood majors. A structural division of
Minsk municipal executive committee Kinovideoprokat created its cinema chain in the capital. At the same
time the company is accountable to the Ministry of Culture in terms of its film distribution and exhibition
activity. So Minsk Kinovideoprokat is a film distributor operating the cinema chain. It pays a specified share
of films box-office to the right holders but doesn’t act as an intermediary between the right holders and
other Belarusian cinema chains.
Minsk Kinovideoprokat operates 15 cinemas with 26 screens in the city. The number of seats in the cinemas of the chain totals 8 500. Digital projection equipment is installed in 8 auditoriums. It is planned all
the cinemas of the chain will be digital by the end of 2013.

At the same time there are 8 cinemas in the whole Mogilev region. One of them is private – Octyabr. The
rest – four in Mogilev, two in Bobruisk and one more in the town Gorki - are operated by the regional unitary company Kinovideoprokat that uses the operating structure launched in Minsk. The company has
installed digital projection equipment in four auditoriums.
As a matter of fact Minsk cinemas operated by Kinovideoprokat provide 60% of the total Belarus boxoffice. The company sold 5 million tickets in 2011 and collected 36 billion Belarusian rubles ($4.2 million).
During the first six month of 2012 near 2.7 million tickets were sold. The total year box office is expected
to reach 75 billion rubles ($8.8 million). The pricing is flexible: tickets for the children movies cost 3 000
Belarusian rubles ($0.35), the most expensive are the tickets for long length 3D feature films - 40 000
rubles ($4.7). Tickets in digital cinemas are 30% more expensive than in those using physical film prints.
GEORGIA
In Georgia cinema distribution market has just begun to evolve. In the country with the population of 4.5
million people there are as few as 15 cinemas. And just two thirds of them operate all year long.
90% market share is covered by Rustaveli Cinemas Holding. It was launched in 1999 when the company

Rustaveli turned into an entertainment centre and cinema with 5 screens. The number of seats doubled
and totaled 858.
In 2004 two-screen cinema Amirani (566 seats) situated in the capital of Georgia became the property
of Rustaveli Cinemas Holding. In 2009 digital projection equipment was installed both in Rustaveli and
Amirani.
Two more cinemas were launched by Rustaveli Cinemas Holding in the cities Sighnagi and Rustavi in 2007.
In 2011 the company opened Apollo cinema in Batumi.

Moreover, the holding plans to reinforce its positions in Tbilisi opening 2 more auditoriums (520 seats) in
Amirani cinema, launching new 8-screen multiplex and 5-screen cinema with 860 seats in the shopping

by 3-to-5-screen multiplexes in Kutaisi and Batumi.
According to the information of The Georgian National Film Center (GNFC) apart from the cinemas that
operate all year round there are some that work in resort towns such as Borjomi, Bakuriani, Chiatura, Sachkhere during the holiday season.

well as independent distributors Paradise, West and Inter-Film releasing films produced by Paramount
Pictures, Warner Bros. and Central Partnership.
Totally 60-70 films are released in Georgia each year. About 25% of the total number of releases are Georgian films. The most of these local features are usually based on popular local TV series and are produced by independent film companies. Tickets cost 6-to-15 Georgian lari ($4-9). According to the GNFC
700,000 tickets were sold in 2011 with only 25,000 Georgian film admissions.
UZBEKISTAN
According to the information provided by Uzbekkino National Agency only 123 of 263 Uzbek cinemas are
operable. In most of them films are screened on DVD and BluRay. Dmitry Kirienko, distribution director
of Inter-Film Holding representing major’s products in Uzbekistan told that the company cooperates with
only just four cinemas providing them film copies for the fixed fee. The rest of the cinemas use pirated content and Uzbekkino National Agency that is supposed to control any activity concerned to licensing, dubbing, production and distribution of film copies doesn’t cope with its functions. At the same time agency
did its best to support legal cinema distribution of the local films. Basing on the deals signed with film
producers and cinemas Uzbekkino National Agency produces DVD copies and sends them to the cinemas
all around the country.

Summarizing the information above we should note that most of the cinemas operating in these CIS countries are situated in the capital cities. The program of the cinemas mostly includes foreign films that are
screened in Russian. In most countries state bodies responsible for control cinema distribution activity
don’t cope with their functions. Belarus with its developing state owned cinema chain and relatively transparent market is the exception. In Uzbekistan there are some positive results of implementing state policy
concerning cinema distribution of national films. CIS Сontent Report will continue to follow the situation
on cinema distribution market of the CIS territories.

ALEXEY LAZARENKO:
“RUSSIAN TV MARKET IS THE
LEADER IN TERMS OF OUR
COMPANY INCOME. POLAND

C
INTERVIEW
№10 24 December, 2012
In an exclusive interview to CIS: Content Report Alexey Lazarenko, chief sales officer of Eastern European
Acquisition Pool Gmbh (EEAP) and acting general director of A Company Distribution, companies that are
under control of based in Berlin international holding A Company Filmed Entertainment AG, told about
the peculiarities of distribution market in Russia and other countries and about the reasons of closure of
Russian company GALA Media & Film International (EEAP owns 100% stake). He also commented on the
business strategy and first results of operation of A Company Distribution, which entered Russian market
this year.
In an interview on the Ukrainian Content Market in September you mentioned that GALA Media &
Film International will be shut down. Why? And what company will perform its duties?
GALA Media & Film International will close in the nearest future. Company was established in 2006 to represent EEAP on the territory of Russia and the CIS countries. Due to financial terms parent company did not
enter the market itself – at the time it was much more comfortable to operate thru the Russian subsidiary. But
the situation changed and content buyers started to close deals directly with EEAP. Moreover both companies’ expansion led to the staff increase, and many functions in the sphere of TV rights sales duplicated. So,
it was decided to cut the expenses and sell all kinds of rights from the headquarters in Berlin.
What business line – distribution rights realization or content sales – is of the first priority for
EEAP? What is more profitable if taking into account the previous year income?
Our company did not manage the distribution independently. We had partners on the whole territory of
Eastern Europe. Several years ago EEAP launched its own distribution departments: we bought Budapest Film company in Hungary and opened Eeap Cz-Sk in Czech Republic and A Company Distribution in
Russia. Now we keep an eye on Poland. In the last two years quality of our film catalog improved and we
realized that it makes sense to distribute huge projects by ourselves. That is why we bet on the film distribution, but still, TV business is the main source of our income – about 75% comes from TV rights sales.
However, with the distribution of such movies like Cloud Atlas this ratio will gradually change.
From the very beginning EEAP cooperated with the CIS companies such as Gemini Film and Cascade
Film in different ways – under the terms of minimum guarantee payment or deduction from box-office.
Eventually sales volume rose to such an amount that we made a decision to put it into income statement.
As the result we launched our own distribution department A Company Distribution in Russia in 2012. On
the other hand EEAP approach to advertising and marketing of our own projects often differed from that of
our partners, so A Company Distribution will better fulfill our potential.
Alexey Lazarenko
A Company Distribution is still not fully stuffed – Cloud Atlas was released by a few people working with AR
Films and Kinotavr teams. So we are looking for new employees.
You are talking about recruitment, but due to GALA Media closure there will be a lot of proved
specialists fired. Is there no place for them in a new company?
They are all employed. Our holding includes Berlin-based Time Code Media Elements (TCME) which has a
subsidiary unit ТСМЕ.РУ in Russia. It works on logistics, delivery of film and TV content to the cinemas and
channels correspondingly. Some GALA Media workers joined ТСМЕ.РУ, others – A Company Distribution.
We appreciate our people.
Theatrical distribution year is coming to an end. How good it was for A Company Distribution? Can
you provide us with some figures?
A Company Distribution presentation took place within the framework of Kinotavr film festival in Sochi.
This year we had only one release – Cloud Atlas. In the opening weekend it was screened in more than
1400 cinemas of the CIS countries. After two weekends its box-office reached $16 mln. in Russia and
almost $2 mln. in Ukraine. There’s no other releases until the end of 2012.
What CIS distributors except Gemini Film and Cascade Film does EEAP work with?
Gemini Film and Cascade Film used to distribute our catalog on the whole territory of CIS except Ukraine
where EEAP is partnering local Gemini department for several years. Now all exclusive rights on the territory of Ukraine belong to B&H Film Distribution Company. We are very pleased with the Cloud Atlas distribution results in Ukraine and intend to continue our cooperation with B&H. Film distribution rights in other
CIS countries belong to Fox.

INTERVIEW
№10 24 December, 2012
In the first two weekends Cloud Atlas earned $25.8 mln. in US and $12 mln. abroad (except CIS
countries). How can you explain this? Is it a success of A Company Distribution on the territory of
CIS or may be the fail of Warner Bros. in the USA?
Firstly, the movie is really good. We understood it already after the first screening in winter 2011. May be
Warner Bros. management tried to release it like an ordinary blockbuster. They shouldn’t have done this
under any circumstances, because the film is definitely not for all – it has its special kind of audience. We
used another strategy in CIS – did some preview screenings and managed to capture a long weekend on
the1st of November. There were no huge premiere openings at the time. Moreover we realized that some
will find the film good, some – bad, but there will be no one indifferent, and expected a lot of talking about
Cloud Atlas in the Internet. Such film will sell well.
What releases will A Company Distribution place its bet on the next year?
In 2013 A Company Distribution plans to release 6-7 movies. The Butler (USA, 2013) directed by Lee Daniels is among them. We believe it will win an Academy Award in 2014. There is a pretty good cast with such
actors as Forest Whitaker and John Cusack, and popular musicians as Lenny Kravitz and Mariah Carey. We
do really compare it to Oscar-winning The King’s Speech (UK, 2010).
Another premiere is a comedy action movie starring Cameron Diaz and Benicio Del Toro. Its tentative title
is Agent: Century 21 (USA, 2013).
A really huge project is a fantasy I, Frankenstein (USA, Australia, 2013) with $70 mln. budget. We rely on it
like we did with a Cloud Atlas movie. It will be a massive action film, made by the same team that worked
on Underworld (USA, Germany, UK, Hungary, 2003), with vampires and werewolves.
Also I have to mention Machete Kills (USA, 2013) starring Danny Trejo, Mel Gibson, Jessica Alba, Charlie
Sheen, Michelle Rodriguez, Antonio Banderas and Lady Gaga. We saw some materials and they were even
better than we expected. The picture is different from that in the first part. Looks like a James Bond movie,
good and expensive.
Another one is Sin City: A Dame To Kill For (USA, 2013) produced by Aleksandr Rodnyansky.
Cooking shows are very popular now, that’s why we included Weinstein company untitled comedy with
Bradley Cooper playing a cook. Also we have a thriller A Walk Among the Tombstones (USA, 2013) starring
Liam Neeson and a horror The Quiet Ones (US, 2013) from the producers of a The Woman in Black (UK,
Canada, Sweden, 2012).
Among other releases – romantic melodrama Can a Song Save Your Life (USA, 2013) with Keira Knightley
and Mark Ruffalo, a comedy The Late Bloomer (USA, 2014) starring Elijah Wood, an action movie The
Guardian (Germany, 2012) with Til Schweiger, and a comedy action The Coup (USA, 2013) with Owen
Wilson and Pierce Brosnan.
May be another one release in February-March 2013 will be The Dyatlov Pass (USA, Russia, 2013). Exact
date is not confirmed yet. We believe it will do well in Russia.
It could be that some of the abovementioned films will premiere not in 2013, but 2014, because they are
still in preproduction. Moreover, Kino Bez Granits, which is also a part of A.R.Films holding, is responsible
for a limited release of art-house and festival films.
How do the holding companies cooperate with each other? Does participation of Aleksandr
Rodnyansky or any of his companies as a producer of the project mean that EEAP works with the
authors or the sales agents under the special conditions?
EEAP has the right of first option. It may be said that the movie will automatically end up in our catalog, but
we pay for it – minimum guarantees – just like the others do. And sometimes we even pay more than the
others, as it often happens between family members. We do not get film for free, that is for sure.

INTERVIEW
№10 24 December, 2012
Having experience in TV rights sales on the European and CIS territories can you tell about the
pricing? What is the price gap for the same content between Europe and Russia for example?
What is the reason for it?
Russian TV market is the leader in terms of our company income. Poland holds the second place. The next
is Ukraine. Price differs everywhere, but I won’t tell the exact figures. It depends on country population,
TV and ad market development stage. Each channel has its own price limits formed by share and rating.
It should be noted that Polish pay TV market is better developed that the Russian one, so it brings more
cash. But with the new Russian market entrants like HBO and Viasat the situation started to change. Everything is changing. NTV and Russia 1 TV channel almost don’t have imported film content. Channel One
Russia still has some premieres on weekends but the competition is improving. Majors are changing their
strategies, making them more flexible: they used to sign long-term output deals on the huge package of
films and TV series, but now they switch to one-time deals on the separate titles. Foreign films are moving
from the central TV channels to the cable ones. And the price there is ten times lower.
Tell please about EEAP participation in American Film Market (AFM) which was held in Santa Monica from October 31 till November 7, 2012: acquisitions, sales, etc.
AFM is the place where we buy, not sell. We used to sell only on the TV content markets, but still, it is possible that soon EEAP will be presented on the film markets as a seller; the number of coproduction deal
has increased and we consider taking part in some Russian projects.
For example the one with a tentative title Antaliyagrad. Idea belongs to producer Alexander van Dülmen.
Russian Non-Stop Production company is coproducing the project. In October this project was granted
€20 000 by German-Russian Co-Development Fund (established by the German Federal Film Board (FFA),
Mitteldeutschen Medienförderung (MDM), Medienaboard Berlin-Brandenburg and the Russian Cinema
Fund in June 2011). It is thought to be a comedy with famous German and Russian actors (supposedly Til
Schweiger and Fedor Bondarchuk) and we hope it will succeed at least in two European markets – Russia
and Germany.
Do you sell the distribution rights to Russian projects? May be there were some partnership proposals from the local production companies?
A while ago EEAP picked up rights to the drama Betrayal directed by Kirill Serebrennikov on the territory of
some Eastern European countries. For now it is the only example of work on the Russian projects.
Another piece of good news – our holding has launched its distribution company in Vietnam – A Company
Vietnam, which will distribute films (the first release will be Cloud Atlas) and sell TV rights. It’s a huge market with population about 90 mln people and new cinema multiplexes sprout there like mushrooms after
the summer rains.
Vietnam TV market is attractive, but closed. Fortunately the local department is headed by the former general director of the Hanoi largest state film studio – Nguyen Van Niem. He is well-connected when it comes
to TV and film business. We would like to buy TV rights on the territory of Vietnam and are highly interested
in Russian films and TV series. We have no deals closed yet, but first of all we’ll try to work with the content
of Aleksandr Rodnyansky’ and Sergei Melkumov’s companies. Time will tell.
