How long can you hold a grudge?
How long do you want to carry your
anger? How long do you want to deny
the beauty of giving, loving and
caring? Just the other day I found myself asking the same
question. I had been angry with this person for 48 years. It
all began when I was a teenager and she entered my life.
Over the years, I analyzed my anger, admitted that her
actions, which hurt me, had some legitimacy, but I still
couldn’t let go. And, as the years went by, she still
continued on her hurtful path; so much so that I stopped
giving her the courtesy or benefit of the doubt I give our
seniors when their actions are very “politically incorrect.”
Then one day she seemed a bit different. Her conversation
was a bit more pleasant, she even asked how the family
and especially, how Rakeli was doing. Then, miracle of
miracles, she asked, how was I doing? It stopped me in
my conversational tracks. I didn’t know what to say, so I
told her you all were great and we were getting ready for
holidays.
Now, I am not sure what to do. Part of me wants to
still be angry. Part of me wants to hold on. Not because
she has not changed; but because now I have to treat her
with love and caring and give of me to her. Have you ever
been afraid to be vulnerable to someone? Well now, even
me. Well you know, it feels good to give, it feels good to

On Rosh Hashana we read:
And it came to pass after these things, that God put Abraham to the
test and said unto him: “Abraham,” and he answered: “Here am I.”
— Genesis 22:1
Why did God choose to test Abraham? Hadn’t Abraham already proven his
commitment to and acceptance of God? Not too many pages earlier, didn’t
Abraham leave his home to go to “the land that I will show you” sight unseen?
Hadn’t he been obeying God’s instructions? Sure, he tried unsuccessfully to bargain with God
regarding the fate of Sodom and Gomorrah, but in the end he submitted to God’s judgment.
As we enter the High Holidays, “we stand on the
shoulders of giants.” We stand on the shoulders
of those who said “Here am I” when asked “Who
will help build this Temple Beth Emet?” Ten
families with a vision in 1958. Members with

Some commentaries I have read suggest that an
all-knowing God doesn’t need to test our faith,
but we need to test ourselves. I think the point is
that we are never done showing our commitment
to God. When God keeps calling us, we have to
keep answering “Here am I.”

I can increase my love quotient. I believe you go
on a diet to reduce your fat percentage, because
it interferes with your health. In this case, you
add to your love percentage to increase your
spiritual health. Now, like all diets, things must
be done in moderation. Give love moderately,
but give. As I wrote this last sentence, I realized
fear is entering into my actions. What’s the worst
that can happen? She’ll go back to being her old
self. Well, I lived with that for 50 years, I can
live with it for another 50 years. On the other
hand, look at the potential to enter new areas of
spirituality. Now that I can get beyond the anger,
I can see her life with my father from her point
of view. I can ask the questions I never cared to
ask before. How did I hurt her feelings? For 48
years she had no feelings as far as I was
concerned. Now she is another senior member

to begin this! Welcome to Rosh Hashanah and
Yom Kippur. This is the meaning of being one
with G-d, (Atone), being able to forgive and
love. Moving on is not enough. I moved beyond
my anger, but I refused to do anything for the
person. Now, I ascend to a higher place by
inviting, no welcoming, her into my heart and if
I can do that with her, I can do that with anyone.
I look forward to the ascent; I hope you will join
me on the “spiritual escalator” of atonement.

The RELIGIOUS SCHOOL PARENTS ASSOCIATION
would like to welcome all Religious School
students and parents to the 2013/14 Religious
School Year and to let all parents know about the
first RSPA Meeting of the year which will be held
on Sunday, September 15th at 9:00 AM.
Parents are urged to attend this brief meeting and
learn about the various ways in which they can
become involved in their child’s religious school
education. Topics to be discussed will include this
year’s changes to the Parents Association, the
schedule of future meetings, and parental
involvement in the upcoming schedule of holiday
events. We hope all parents can attend.

I am sorry I have to complain again, BUT, our temple needs volunteers to be at bar/bat mitzvahs to present the gifts to the
recipients. This is the responsibility of the Men’s Club, The Temple Board, and (not only) The Sisterhood. It is time to step
up and do your part.
If you didn’t go to The Sisterhood Ice Cream Social, you missed a great event! All proceeds (after expenses) went to a fund
set aside to purchase/repair our temple air conditioner. If you missed the Ice Cream Social, and still would like to make a
donation to the air conditioning fund, mail or bring in your check (made out to Temple Beth Emet Sisterhood and mark in the
lower left blank “Air Conditioning Fund.”) Let’s keep our temple cool and comfortable.
Religious School is starting. Have you registered? Do you know someone who needs or wants a Jewish education for
themselves or their children? Tell them about our school.
We need volunteers to move and help set up for Rosh Hashanah services at “Temple St. Jude’s.” After the High Holiday
Services, we will need to take down our High Holiday items and put them in storage. PLEASE contact the temple office if
you can help. We are short-handed. It doesn’t take long, if we have 4 or 5 good people to help. We hope to move September
1st to “Temple St. Jude’s” at St. Jude’s Anglican Church.
We will be needing a few good people to put up palm fronds for our sukkah for Sukkoth. That will be the week after Yom
Kippur. It should be constructed by Wednesday, September 18th.

Pizza Night begins again soon! This has been a success and YOU don’t want to miss out! It will be better than ever!
We want to thank our supporters and community
at Temple Beth Emet for the contribution that
made our trip to Israel for the 19th Maccabiah
Games possible. It truly was a once-in-alifetime opportunity.
We not only had a great time playing baseball &
bonding with our team-mates, we experienced
the amazing sights & tastes all throughout
Israel, met & visited with our Israeli family,
made new friends from around the country &
world, and of course, loved winning the gold!!

L’SHANAH TOVAH TO ALL OUR
TEMPLE FAMILY!
On August 4th we met in Blum Hall at noon to setup for
the Ice Cream Social. To our delight we saw that Stacie
Barlow had arrived earlier and setup a beautiful,
magnificent serving table. We continued with the job and
soon the bingo game table was setup and a long table for
the Honey Bear Boxes and other items was also ready.
Before we knew it, we were ready and had time for our
business meeting.
Our treasurer, Jodi Gross, informed us that we had a
donation from LaVerne and Bob Cohen in memory of
Eugene Abrams, Steve Abrams’ father. We are grateful
when someone chooses to donate to us!
When our meeting was finished, people started to arrive
and the Ice Cream Social began. The ice cream and
toppings seemed endless. Children and adults went back
for refills, and still we didn’t run out!
There were baskets of games for those who wished to
play them. Tracy Hyman and daughter Emily brought a
“tattoo” set and a few children chose to be “inked” with a
cute design that, of course, washed off.
The price of admission included a bingo card and the

did the calling and they made it fun for everyone. There
were so many nice prizes from The Sisterhood Gift
Shoppe that almost everyone won something.
The Rosh Hashanah Honey Bear Boxes and some items
from the Gift Shoppe were sold and before we knew it, it
was time for our guests to go home. As far as I could see,
everyone left happy and in a little while the cleanup was
complete.
Since so much of the ice cream and toppings were
donated to us by The Men’s Club, most of the money we
collected is now in the Air Conditioning Fund that
Sisterhood has set up. We took in $490, expenses were
$60, so $430 went into the Air Conditioning Fund. Thank
You to everyone who helped!!
This, and the sale of honey bears pretty much concludes
our money making activities for this year. Now we turn
our attention to electing (or re-electing) officers for the
coming year. It is time to collect dues for the New Year.
We invite all temple women and interested men to join us
even if you cannot attend meetings. Our dues of $18 is
the “seed money” that we use to create events with which
we then raise more money for our temple
In addition to continuing with the events that took place
this year, we are looking forward to an educational series
led by Rebbetzin Mina Sobel on Jewish Women’s
Folklore. This will occur on Sundays while religious
school is still in session so parents can participate.

Also, we need to increase the number of people who buy
food, serve and help with Oneg Shabbats. We also need
people to help with Bar/Bat Mitzvahs. We need to
increase the number of people who work with the Gift
Shoppe. There are many tasks waiting for the right
people. Won’t you please join us?
Our next meeting is Sunday, September 1st, 10 am.

those in need of well wishes by contacting the office?
A card will automatically be sent from Tribute Chair John
