Each winter and spring we hear
from residents wondering why
the grass in some Council parks
becomes so brown and dry. Here is a
short explanation as to why.
There are two types of grass
utilized in our Council parks,
either fescue or hybrid bermuda.
Fescue is a tall, thick grass capable
of holding most of its health
and color year round. Bermuda
grass on the other hand, is a low,
dense grass which requires warm
temperatures to grow and goes
dormant when temperatures drop
during the late fall, winter, and early
spring. The occasional late arrival
of high temperatures will extend
the dormant season and result in
our bermuda grass areas remaining
brown even longer than usual.
Why use bermuda? When a
park is originally planned, the first
question asked is what primary
activities will the park be hosting.
The intended recreational uses
dictate the type of turf that is
appropriate. The logic being if a
park will host a variety of nonsoccer uses, then taller, dense and
year round green fescue grass is
suitable and preferred. Conversely,
if the park is to serve primarily as
a soccer facility where the intent is
to kick and pass a ball on the grass,
then the tighter, shorter bermuda
turf is preferred. Adhering to this
approach, to date we have four
hybrid bermuda grass Council
parks. They are The Crossing Park,

The Summerlin Council Board of Directors does not
meet in June. The next Board meeting is scheduled
for July 28 at 10 a.m. at the Willows Community
Center. The notice will be provided in Summerlines
and www.summerlink.com.
A unit owner has the right to:
a) Have a copy of the minutes or a summary of the minutes
distributed to him upon request and upon payment to
the association of the cost of making the distribution as
outlined in NRS 116.
b) Speak to the Board of Directors in accordance with NRS
116, unless the Board is meeting in executive session.
Please Note: Due to early publishing deadlines, Board meeting summaries included in Summerlines
may reflect meetings held six to eight weeks prior.
Spotted Leaf Park, Summerlin Centre Community Park,
and Village Green Park. All other current Council parks
are planted with fescue grass.
Those of you familiar with seasonal turf rotation of
bermuda in the summer and overseed in the winter
might be asking why we don’t practice this approach in
these parks to keep things green year round. Seasonal
over-seeding would require that the fields be shut down
for three to four weeks in the fall to allow for field
preparation and seeding/germination. This would be
highly counter-productive given that the period of nonuse would take place when need for these soccer fields
are in highest demand. Secondly, annual over-seeding
is labor intensive and demands more irrigation, thus
increasing respective park budgets to allow for extra
materials, labor and costly water necessary to properly
over-seed and maintain these areas.
For those of you spending time in our bermuda
parks, please rest assured our landscape maintenance
companies are focused on dethatching, fertilization,
watering and maintenance practices most suitable to
establish and maintain the best turf health possible.
Hopefully this information has helped answer some of
your questions and concerns.

COMMUNITY CONNECTION
Information provided by the Southern Nevada Water Authority
Your Tap Water: Safe, From the Source
Has anyone ever tried to sell you
a home water treatment system after
“testing” your tap water and claiming
it is either dirty or, at worst, harmful?
While the Southern Nevada
Water Authority does not discourage
you from buying a home water
treatment system, the SNWA does
want to assure you the water that
comes out of your tap is some of
the cleanest and safest in the nation.
And why is that? It all starts at
the source.
About 90 percent of our drinking
water comes from Lake Mead. The
rest is drawn through wells from
an aquifer hundreds of feet beneath
the Las Vegas Valley. Nearly all of
the water in Southern Nevada is
treated through a series of processes
including chlorine and ozonation, to
kill any potentially harmful bacteria
and microscopic organisms. The
water then moves through a direct
filtration process to remove any
remaining particles. After water
leaves the treatment facility, it is
disinfected yet again.
You can be sure that your water
is safe thanks to the Safe Drinking
Water Act. This act ensures that
water quality standards are the same
throughout the country. It identifies
potential constituents in drinking
water and sets safe limits for each
of them.
This act also requires all water
agencies to produce and distribute
a water quality report every year.
You should receive your local water
purveyor’s report by the end of June.
The report includes a comparison
of test results to federal drinking
water standards, information about
municipal water sources and an
overview of treatment processes.
You can learn more about water
quality by visiting snwa.com or
calling our Conservation Helpline
at 258-SAVE.
