You can read all about these in this edition of Orbit as well as about our new partnership with the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) for the online BSc (Hons) in Business Computing and Information Systems. We live in a rapidly changing global environment which requires us all to develop both breadth and depth of skills in order to succeed. At NCC Education we believe that our qualifications give our students the edge they need to compete around the world. In the UK we are working in a time of significant change for qualifications and in Higher Education. We will ensure that our certificates and teaching programmes are updated to reflect external needs and will focus on improving delivery of our services to centres and students. The operational enhancements we are beginning to make the Partner Centre accreditation and other processes herald a strengthening in our core infrastructure. In the coming months we will also focus on identifying a greater role for technology in the administration of assessments. Creating an awareness of the need for change - and indeed a desire for it - is one of the key requirements in ensuring that NCC Education continues to advance successfully in our rapidly changing environment. An essential component of this is recognising the significant contribution of staff and examiners in minimising the impact of these changes on our customers: centres, teachers and students and ensuring that our focus is always on performance and service improvement. Equally we will not lose sight of our mission and our belief in the value of NCC Education qualifications and the positive impact they have on skills development, university progression and job opportunities. What changes have been made to the programme? • The top-up now contains four 20 credit modules and a 40 credit project module rather than the previous version which contained eight 15 credit modules. Students will therefore have fewer assessments to take and will be able to focus more on each model. Many UK universities have adopted this model, especially in the third year, as students are able to build upon the knowledge gained in their previous years of study. • The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) is ranked 46 in the Guardian league tables for Computer Sciences and IT. UCLan is a world-ranked, globally recognised university. • In the 2010 Times Higher Education (THE) awards, UCLan was shortlisted for Entrepreneurial University of the Year. In the 2012 THE awards, UCLan was shortlisted in the Outstanding ICT Initiative of the Year category. These awards recognise universities which uphold, and exceed, the standard of excellence expected in the UK. NCC Education is delighted to announce a new partnership with the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) for the online BSc (Hons) in Business Computing and Information Systems. “ NCC Education is excited about our new partnership with UCLan and we are very much looking forward to working closely with the university and building a successful relationship, ” said Janette Lister, Collaborations Manager, NCC Education. NCC Education is excited to embark on the new partnership with UCLan, which is a prestigious and high-quality university, and will undoubtedly have a positive impact on our valuable Accredited Partner Centres and their students. UCLan commended NCC Education in several areas, including the quality of our online resources, and strategies to develop learning and teaching. “ UCLan is a world ranked university and we are certain that our Accredited Partner Centres and their students’ will greatly benefit from this new partnership and the new online IT degree top-up programme. ” “ The University of Central Lancashire is pleased to partner with NCC Education to offer their BSc Business Computing and Information Systems top-up, ” said Barbara McManus, Associate Head of the School of Computing, Engineering and Physical Science at UCLan “ The new partnership will provide students with the opportunity to build on their existing knowledge and experience in order to secure their desired vocation or to go on to further education. We believe, like us, that NCC Education are committed to a quality student experience and we look forward to working with them over the coming years. ” “ We believe, like us, that NCC Education are committed to a quality student experience and we look forward to working with them over the coming years. ” Barbara McManus, Associate Head of the School of Computing, Engineening and Physical Science at UCLan. • Introductory tutorial videos provide students with the opportunity to see each of their module leaders and hear about their professional skills and experience, heightening the learning experience. • The University of Central Lancashire was the first modern university to enter the QS rankings in 2010, highlighting their growing international reputation. Recently, the QS Stars Development Road Map was launched to showcase the broader quality of institutions and help them to stand out in their particular areas of excellence. Overall, UCLan has been awarded four out of the maximum of five stars. Within the sub-areas which make up the overall grading, UCLan has been awarded the maximum of five stars for teaching, infrastructure, internationalisation and engagement. • The presentation of the programme has been totally revamped; from the video lectures, to the layout on Campus, to the online tutorials. The cleaner, more modern formats will enhance usability and student satisfaction. • Students will complete non-assessed formative assessments to aid revision and provide valuable feedback on their progress. Each tutorial will also provide a new interactive, quiz-style element for students to work through and check their understanding. • All students from NCC Education applying for a postgraduate course of study at UCLan shall be entitled to a scholarship to the equivalent of 20% of the full tuition fee for the postgraduate programme. • Students who complete their third year of the top-up will receive the same certificate as if they had studied all three years of the programme at UCLan. • All the module leaders are experienced UK higher education academics and specialists in the fields they are delivering. 06 Orbit Feburary Issue 2013 • This is a brand new programme; students can be assured they are studying the very latest in subject knowledge and content. 07 Orbit Feburary Issue 2013 GLOBAL HIGHER EDUCATION NEWS ROUND-UP GLOBAL Mwangi noted that institutions that have exhibited higher compliance to the use of ICT in teaching and general administration tended to attract more international students, local and foreign grants and collaborations with private ICT service providers. “ICT has become the fulcrum on which the world revolves and everyone has to keep himself updated on the current trends, innovations and inventions,” he said. Over 500 universities are due to sign up to a new university ranking system, U-Multirank. The aim of this new system is to bring a new and broader approach to the assessment of universities. The first results are due to be published in 2014. Africa Source: Standard Digital With almost 200 million people aged between 15 and 24, Africa has the youngest population in the world and it keeps growing rapidly. If this trend continues, the continent’s labour force will be 1 billion strong by 2040, making it the largest in the world, surpassing both China and India. Africa’s youth population is not only growing rapidly, it is also getting better educated. Based on current trends, 59% of 20-24 year olds will have had secondary education in 2030, compared to 42% today. This will translate into 137 million 20-24 year olds with secondary education and 12 million with tertiary education in 2030. USA Sweden Nearly a tenth of the students enrolled at the University of San Francisco (USF) are Chinese nationals, many with limited English language skills, prompting one of the university’s administration team to resign. One Chinese student also told China Daily that “ USF should admit fewer Chinese applicants as we pay for an English-speaking environment and prefer to be classmates of native American speakers.” The Swedish Government has proposed doubling the grant for students from non-EU countries. The funding is to be increased from just under £50mn to £90mn. The funds will include students from Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). A further £50mn is to be provided for students from countries not in the OECD. They found that despite “intense intercultural, social and educational challenges”, 94% were satisfied with their overall study experience in the UK and 83% found coming home a happy experience. Furthermore, 84% felt that they were able to take advantage of their overseas experience at work. This module has a particular focus on student life and studying abroad. Increased investments in ICT over the past decade, including the instalment of new fibre optic cables, have improved the skills of learners, a new survey shows. The programme can include up to six months of prior intensive language training, and is aimed at faculty and teaching staff in universities, engineers, scientists and medical professionals. The Centre for International Programs has already established a range of international partnerships to deliver training under the Fellowship Program, but is interested in establishing further partnerships, including the UK. International student recruitment, clearly, is big business, and as higher education institutions and universities look to increase their international student enrolment and differentiate amongst global student audiences, finding marketing solutions that bring students within arm’s reach has become an on-going challenge. • 23% of Facebook users check their accounts more than 5 times a day It is for this reason that more and more colleges and universities are turning to social media as part of their student recruitment strategies. Taking a glance at some recent statistics makes it easy to see why they think the technique could be an effective one: When it comes to recruiting international students, it is clear from the above trends that social media, if used correctly, can be an incredible outreach vehicle, and higher education institutions are starting to catch on to some of the major advantages. They are increasingly aware of the expensive nature of running an international department and the salaries, travel and printing costs that it brings. So they are signing up to the cheaper social media alternative with its instant communication, open dialogue and access to enormous pools of international prospects. • Facebook has over 1 billion users which, if it were a country, would make it the third largest in the world • 80% of users prefer to connect with brands on Facebook • Since the dawn of Twitter, there have been 163 billion Tweets • 69% of follows on Twitter are suggested by friends • 34% of marketers have generated leads using Twitter • 625,000 people join Google+ every day • 78% report that these tools have changed the way they recruit. Social media is of course only one part of the diverse strategies that higher education institutions are now using to reach and compete for applicants around the world. It is, however, the fastest growing recruitment strategy, and schools are doing everything from organising private Facebook groups for prospective students, to letting applicants supplement their applications with YouTube videos. Some key findings are listed below: • 100% of the schools studied are using some form of Social media (98% Facebook, 84% Twitter, and 47% LinkedIn). • Schools report 33% less spent on printing, 24% less spent on newspaper ads and 17% less spent on radio and TV ads All of it is an attempt to extend an institution’s brand beyond the traditional mailbox and into places where prospective students are already spending large portions of their adolescent life. With Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn already used by the majority, the race is on to find the new platforms that will help admissions departments gain an online advantage. • One in 3 schools say social media is more efficient than traditional media in reaching their target audience (this number increases to 44% for top MBA programs) 10 Orbit Feburary Issue 2013 • The most useful tools for recruiting undergraduates include Facebook (94%),YouTube (81%), Twitter (69%) and Downloadable Mobile Apps (51%) Last year, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth released the results of an illuminating study into the ways in which Higher Education Institutions in the US were engaging with social media. The study showed that social media can be useful in higher education in many more areas than student recruitment, but also that there was considerable work still to be done to ensure that universities were getting the most from the technology 11 Orbit Feburary Issue 2013 g nrichin e e t a br e l e c to nt e v e I N M U L A holds n o s e d a c e d NCC Educati two lmost a es in Myanmar for v li ’ nts e stud of nds a thous “ It always gives me great pleasure to witness the ways in which the academic experience gained by NCC Education students has enriched their lives and helped them to achieve their career ambitions. Felicity Dale, Senior Marketing Executive spoke about how NCC Education can assist the partners centres in their student recruitment and student satisfaction, she also discussed the upcoming enhancements to the NCC Education website, in particular the University Progression section. Uurdee Gongor of National University of Mongolia with NCC Education staff The guests also then travelled to Manchester city centre to experience the famous Manchester Christmas Markets. One guest even had the opportunity to visit Old Trafford, to watch Manchester United play in the Champion’s League. Managers from National University of Mongolia, Bidinform and Guangzhou Institute of Technology spent nearly two weeks in Liverpool, where they took part in training workshops and visited local attractions. The centre managers took the opportunity to visit the University of Liverpool and Liverpool John Moores University to discuss progression routes for their students. Liverpool is a highly attractive student destination. In 2004 the city became a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and in 2008 Liverpool became the first English city to be designated European Capital of Culture in 2008. No wonder Liverpool is a top International student destination. On Wednesday 5th December the guests visited NCC Education’s Head Office The staff were pleased to be able to discuss the centres’ requirements and present exciting new projects and initiatives for 2013. The attendees from China and Mongolia with NCC Education staff members Rebecca is the customer service manager for over 25 centres based in Africa and works very closely with the South African team. This visit created a perfect opportunity to meet her co-workers face to face and partake in a team building training session. The session was designed to strengthen our internal processes to ensure that our African centres receive a more efficient service and will be rolled out companywide. The team gained a greater understanding of each other’s roles to enable them to grow and increase productivity. Rebecca was extremely pleased with the centre’s offerings; providing students with a fantastic environment to complete their studies: “ IDM’s facilities are unbelievable. They ensure that students have everything they need to be able to excel in their studies; including free Wi-Fi, well-equipped computer labs and auditoriums. I was extremely impressed. ” After meeting the team Rebecca then flew to Swaziland to meet one of our Accredited Partner Centres, the Institute of Development Management (IDM). IDM was established in 1974 as a regional organisation in Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland (BLS) to help meet the management needs of the region through development activities. It operates under the general direction of a governing board composed of representatives from government, industry and universities in each of the BLS countries. 14 Orbit Feburary Issue 2013 The campuses in Botswana and Swaziland both offer the NCC Education Business, Business IT and Computing degree pathways. Rebecca held a two day training session on Connect and went through our processes with the centre staff based in Swaziland. This session was the perfect opportunity to meet the staff and forge strong relationships with the centre. “ I have been working with IDM Swaziland for the past few years and we have had many conversations via email and telephone. Whilst I was over there I was able to set up a Skype account for them to create a more convenient form of communication. It was fantastic to be able to meet the centre staff in person. This training session was crucial, and I can already see the positive impact it has had on their administration.” Rebecca Bennett, an NCC Education Senior Customer Service Executive recently embarked on a trip to our regional office in Cape Town and to one of our Accredited Partner Centres based in the neighbouring country of Swaziland. Courage S Makumucha, the Head of Academics at the centre said: “ It was really good having Rebecca here and it was worth it, I am actually beginning to see some changes in our operations since the visit. ” 15 Orbit Feburary Issue 2013 S W E N n o NCC Educati INTERVIEW WITH Cherry Moe Learnit Institute of Business and Technology 19th Graduation Ceremony Global High Achiever - International Diploma in Business Regent Business Academy Cherry Moe is now an extremely successful restaurateur; she is the Managing Director of a popular restaurant situation in one of Yangon’s busiest shopping centres. You were a Global High Achiever right? I plan to open a second branch this year, and hope to have five branches in the next three years! Yes! In June 2010 I was presented with the prestigious Global High Achiever award. Graduates at the ceremony When we last communicated you told NCC Education how you dreamt of opening a restaurant. It is through dedication, application and passion I have been able to achieve this, I opened my restaurant in 2011 and I am so happy with how it is growing. The NCC Education business diploma enabled me to successfully run my new business venture. The qualification taught me how to approach and select strategies, how to make effective analyses, how to draw a business plan, how to manage and control my employees and how to promote my restaurant. If I hadn’t have studied the NCC Education qualifications I would not have had this amount of success. This year, 225 students graduated from the Diploma, Advanced Diploma, Bachelor of Business IT and Bachelor of Arts in Business Studies programmes, with the best students from each specially recognised and awarded with medals. Through its partnership with NCC Education, Learnit is able to provide diplomas and advanced diplomas in So tell us more about your restaurant, Spicy Forest. This year NCC Education decided to create a staff Christmas card, asking staff to donate money to local charities: Francis House, based near the Head Office and One Foundation a charity based in China. Francis House was opened in November 1999 by the late princess Diana and provides care for children with life-limiting conditions, and support for their family. One Foundation was founded by Jet Li, an ambassador for the Red Cross Society of China. The charity provides disaster relief and sets out to educate the Chinese nation on the tangible benefits of charity work. Customer Service Staff member gives local shelter a Christmas to remember families here. Christmas has always been about sharing and giving. We just wanted to give them something to remember and show that the world has people that do care for one another irrespective of what you go through. ” Mark said. The group arranged for a full Christmas dinner, with all the trimmings and a sing-a-long carol service. The day was a great success and Mark, his family and the church were praised and thanked for their efforts. Mark David, a Customer Services Executive carried out some personal charity work over the festive period. His local church arranged a fun-filled day for Burmese AIDs victims and political refugees. “ We only live once and we have to try and do what is best for the sake of humanity.
