Battlefield Equipment offers a wide range of products for rent, as well as accessories for purchase in addition to a full selection of new Cat® Compact Equipment and Work Tools. But, more than that, rental professionals are always working on innovative ways to help contractors manage the costs of operation. Reduce Financial Commitment Renting frees up business capital. Battlefield’s Rental Specialists can help release contracting operations from excessive equipment ownership costs, since expense is incurred only when the equipment is needed on the job. The extra capital saved through renting equipment can then be applied to other demands within your business — so you can grow more profitably. Renting can increase your borrowing power. Equipment rental does not appear as a liability on an operation’s balance sheet. Renting offers you a better ratio of assets to liabilities, increasing your borrowing power. Rental payments help you budget. Rental payments are fixed and predictable. They can be written off as a current business expense, and don’t appear as a long-term obligation on balance sheets. Plus, personal property tax and license fees don’t apply to rented equipment. Avoid costly breakdowns with rental equipment. Breakdowns cost your business, not only in repairing the problem, but in idle time as well. Battlefield Equipment provides customers with use of the latest technologies on current, well-maintained machines. And should a customer experience problems, Battlefield Equipment will repair or replace the rented machine immediately. service the equipment you own. Eliminate storage and transportation costs. Call Battlefield Equipment to deliver your equipment to the jobsite and to pick it back up when the job is over. Your crew saves time and you save storage space at the yard. Eliminate guesswork - demo before you buy. Renting lets your operators test a new machine or work tool in real working conditions to see if it’s the right fit for your fleet. For more information on the products, services and Training Programs that Battlefield Equipment provides, call 1-800-RENT-CAT to reach your nearest location. Rental Advantages Eliminate maintenance costs. Rental agreements typically cover the complete maintenance of the rented equipment. You can eliminate costly service shops, service tooling, spare parts and maintenance records on rental equipment and free up the machine shop staff to Rental Fence for Your Jobsite Battlefield Equipment Rentals has teamed up with Modu-Loc Fence Rentals to supply rental fence to construction sites throughout Ontario and has access to an inventory of over 1,500,000 feet of rental fence. The rental fence is not a chain link system, but a much more stable and secure welded metal panel using an interlocking system. The panels are finished in forest green coloured powder coating, which is more visually appealing than the standard metal fence. This is of importance to many contractors, especially when the look of the site is of concern. The fence panels are extremely sturdy and stable and can be installed as a free-standing system, anchored in loose terrain or secured onto concrete or blacktop. Gates for vehicles or personnel can easily be installed in any location in the fence line. For added privacy and security a screening material can also be installed. Part of the service provided to the customers is the ability to modify or customize the fence panels and bases to handle unique situations and construction sites. Specialty parts can also be designed and manufactured for any special needs that may arise. The staff has the experience and product knowledge to consult with and be of assistance to project managers to make their job easier in planning the design of the fence layout to best serve their needs. As site safety is always a major priority, the bases are bright orange to make them highly visible. The Rental Fence Each fence panel is 10 feet in length and is available in heights of 4, 6 and 8-feet. The panel frame utilizes structural steel square tubing. 5-foot Man Gates are available upon request. The mesh of the panel is a welded wire with a 2” (horizontal) by a 4” (vertical) pattern, making it difficult to climb. The fence panels fit onto a flat base which provides excellent stability while allowing for ease of installation by the field crews. The bases may be anchored onto the ground, concrete or asphalt for extra stability. The panels are joined together at the top by an interlocking steel cap ensuring the alignment and overall strength of the fence. Invest in Equipment Safety Training Equipment safety training is always beneficial to your business and it’s available from a variety of sources, including Battlefield Equipment. The most commonly provided equipment safety training includes instruction for operating boom lifts, scissors lifts, industrial forklifts and telehandlers or rough-terrain forklifts, as well as fall protection and competent-person training courses. The time required to complete such courses varies, ranging from a one-hour fall-protection course to competent-person training or forklift certification programs that take participants six hours or more to complete. Participants in many of these programs will receive a card or certificate as proof of his or her completion of the program. Similarly, the costs to an employer for such training programs vary, depending on the number of participants, the equipment in question, and whether it must be transported to the training site. In addition to the obvious goal of keeping your employees safe and injury-free, equipment safety training can have a positive impact on your business’ operating costs: Insurance rates often drop for businesses that require employees to complete safety training. Be sure your insurance provider knows your employees are certified and factors any applicable discounts into his or her calculations of your company’s rate. (In addition, staying injury- and claim-free can also lower your rates.) Businesses competing for a job may be required to show proof of equipment safety training during the bidding process. The law requires equipment safety training for employees operating many machines and Ministry of Labour inspectors conducting a jobsite visit may ask the equipment operators to present their training certification cards. Caterpillar Introduces 414E IL—the First Industrial Loader To Feature Joystick Control of Rear Implements ® Caterpillar® introduces the 414E IL, an allnew industrial loader for the construction and landscaping industries. The 414E IL follows the successful 416E IL and is based on the fieldproven Caterpillar backhoe loader platform. Seat-mounted joystick implement controls in the 414E IL are an industry first and provide greater operator comfort and promote greater productivity. With just one joystick instead of the traditional four or five levers, the machine gives the operator full control of all five functions (raise, lower, float, tilt and pitch) of the three-point tool carrier along with the ability to activate auxiliary hydraulics and work tools. The category two three-point hitch on the 414E IL is fully integrated into the purpose-built box section frame. That means simplified operation and even greater operator comfort. The machine is compatible with a wide range of Caterpillar and existing aftermarket work tools. The front loader is the same as the highly productive system used on the Caterpillar 416E backhoe loader. The front loader can use a 1-cubic-yard (0.76–cubic-meter), a 1¼-cubicyard (0.96-cubic-meter), or a 1.3-cubic-yard (1-cubic-meter) multi-purpose bucket as well as a wide range of additional Caterpillar work tools. The operator station is designed to reduce fatigue and to boost operator efficiency. A sloping front hood and divergent lift arms allow the operator to see more of the forward work area and loader attachments. The operator has an unobstructed view to the rear work tool. The seat rotates 20 degrees from forward for excellent visibility and operator comfort when operating rear implements. The seat-mounted joystick controls for the rear implement set an industry standard for industrial tractors and rotate with the seat for easy operation regardless of the seat position. The powertrain features a Cat® turbocharged 3054C DIT diesel engine producing 93 horsepower. All-wheel drive is standard for productive performance in all underfoot conditions. Load-sensing hydraulics provide power when and where it is needed without wasted fuel or wear. The 414E IL has the Caterpillar PowerShuttle transmission that permits on-the-go shifting of all gears, up or down. There are four speeds forward and four reverse as well as a conveniently placed lever that enables the operator to make instant changes between forward and reverse. The 414E IL is designed to work effectively with a wide variety of work tools for expanded versatility in construction and landscaping applications. Front work tools, in addition to general purpose and multipurpose buckets, include forks, material handling arm, angle brooms and snow pushers. One such customer is Ray Birkmire, an overthe-road driver for New Century Transportation in Westampton, N.J. Birkmire, a 35-year veteran of driving trucks, averages 130,000 miles each year running East coast to West coast. He currently is running a 430-horsepower 2007 Cat® C13 with ACERT™ Technology. So far, he’s put 80,000 miles on the engine, using the required ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel. Even with the different fuel requirements, performance and fuel economy are equal to or better than previous engines, Birkmire said. “I’m happy with the engine, it does a good job. I’m not seeing any performance issues with it using the ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel. It pulls a mountain in Tennessee that I regularly run at about 65 miles per hour, the same as the previous Cat engine I had,” he said. “We’re getting good fuel mileage, too—it gets 6.8 miles per gallon, and I was amazed that this truck would get that.” Although the engine iron has changed slightly with the addition of the self-regenerating diesel particulate filter, driving this new C13 feels the same as running a Cat engine always has, according to Birkmire. “There’s no special training required. The dealer sat down with me when the truck came in and explained the regeneration process and the indicator lights,” he said. “Usually it regenerates all by itself, I don’t have to do anything.” Designed to meet the new, stringent 2007 EPA emissions standards without sacrificing “I’m happy with the engine, it does a good job. I’m not seeing any performance issues with it using the ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel. It pulls a mountain in Tennessee that I regularly run at about 65 miles per hour, the same as the previous Cat engine I had,” he said. “We’re getting good fuel mileage, too—it gets 6.8 miles per gallon, and I was amazed that this truck would get that.” Ray Birkmire Robert Long “Cat’s always been the preferred motor. There are fewer breakdowns. I’ve always liked the support Cat’s given—I like the way they stand behind it. When we spec the truck, I don’t get the support from the competitors,” Long said. performance, reliability or fuel economy, the new engines provide lower emissions than ever before. One pleasant surprise for Birkmire was how clean the new Cat engine runs. Upcoming Tradeshows Come Visit Us! “There’s no smoke coming out of that stack, which amazes me,” Birkmire said. “It doesn’t smoke at all, and the stack on the truck does not get carbon buildup in it. It actually keeps the trailer clean!” Birkmire worked closely with New Century’s Caterpillar dealer, Ransome Cat located in Bensalem, Pa., to ensure that the transition to the new engine went smoothly. “The support from Caterpillar has been really good,” he said. “When I first got the truck, they called me and wanted to know how I was doing and what fuel mileage I was getting. If I am having any issues, they want to know about it.” Cat customer Robert Long, chief financial officer of USA Dry Van Logistics, LLC, in McAllen, Texas, concurs with Birkmire’s opinion of Caterpillar support. “Cat’s always been the preferred motor. There are fewer breakdowns. I’ve always liked the support Cat’s given — I like the way they stand behind it. When we spec the truck, I don’t get the support from the competitors,” Long said. Long also mentions fuel mileage as a Cat advantage. “We had to take 10 competing engines and test them, and the Cat’s doing a lot better than those engines, averaging about 7.2 or 7.4 miles per gallon,” he said. “We weren’t afraid to jump into the new motor, and it’s doing well for us. Drivers love them too, and haven’t had problems with them.” With the same range of engine ratings, fuel economy and projected life-to-overhaul as previous Cat engines, the 2007 engines continue to provide the value, performance and fuel economy customers expect, according to George Taylor, director and general manager, Global On-Highway at Caterpillar. “With refinements to the same technology approach proven successful over millions of miles, the new engines are meeting or exceeding our customers’ expectations in every way,” Taylor said. “The more than half million engines with ACERT Technology on the road today are a clear statement on the customer value our engines deliver.” Keep your on-highway engine up and running to maximize your investment. Perforated underground pipes are capturing methane gas, a highly potent greenhouse gas, produced by decaying organic waste at the sprawling Kingsway site. The gas is cleaned and compressed and fed into an engine that powers an electricityproducing generator. In use since early July, the plant has the capability to produce about 1.2 megawatts of electricity annually worth about $1 million. Greater Sudbury Utilities, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the city has a 20-year contract to sell that “green” power to the province. Look for the energy production figure and dollar value to grow over the years, with 1.5 megawatts forecast for 2008 and 1.6 megawatts in 2009, when the plant reaches full capacity. The latter figure is the amount of electricity needed to power about 1,200 homes. Now officially opened, the plant is the first of its kind in northern Ontario and one of only 10 in Canada. It was built for the city by Toromont Power Systems at a cost of $3.1 million. Toromont also has a long-term contract with the city to maintain and operate the plant. “We have a first in northern Ontario,” said Sudbury MPP Rick Bartolucci at a press conference held at the plant site Thursday. “We have a practical and reliable example of renewable energy ... there’s no shortage of dumps in northern Ontario, so the potential is limitless.” Beatrice Olivastri, CEO of Friends of the Earth, said the new plant is a sign of things to come. “People in Canada and all over the world are very clear it’s time to do something about climate change,” she said. “This is a very profitable and practical exercise.” Ward 9 Coun., Doug Craig, who also chairs Greater Sudbury Utilities, called the new plant “one more step in the elimination of greenhouse gasses.” “It’s Sudbury’s way of not just talking about it, but doing it.” Craig also said that it was quite an accomplishment for a mining community that continues to repair past environmental damage. “In the 40 years that I have lived in this Glenn Keenan Vice President Power Systems gkeenan@toromont.com 416-667-5531 Kevin Stratton Industry Manager - Marine & Industrial kstratton@toromont.com 905-799-1544, ext.229 community, every one of us has worked hard to win back our land, our air and our water and I am proud of it,” he said. A second plant is being considered for the Kingsway landfill site. It could be operational as early as 2011. Renewal – the Repowering of “M/V Chi-Cheemaun” The “M/V Chi-Cheemaun” of today is very different from the one that would have carried you between Tobermory and South Baymouth several years ago. What you may notice are the tastefully upgraded passenger areas and crew accommodations; what you may not be aware of is the fact that the ship has undergone a complete replacement of the propulsion engines and auxiliary machinery in a two-year project costing in excess of $10 million. Planning started over ten years ago when it was anticipated that the original engines, installed during construction of the “M/V ChiCheemaun” during 1975 and 1976 in Collingwood, Ontario, would need replacement to ensure in-service reliability until at least 2030. This ship is the sole service provider on this route and the priority is to sail exactly according to the published schedule during the operating season. Early thinking was to keep the existing machinery arrangement and just replace the propulsion engines and generator sets with new units. This changed as fuel prices started to escalate and concern for the environment increased. Further options were considered to meet these extremely challenging fundamentals while keeping service reliability in the forefront. Originally “M/V Chi-Cheemaun” had just one V16 cylinder, 3500bhp diesel engine driving the propellers. The ship’s operational schedule called for less than maximum speed and this was accomplished with the engine producing about 2500bh. It led to the decision to increase the number of engines on each propeller shaft to two (in marine terminology this is a “twininput/single-output” installation), with each of the two new engines capable of maintaining the required vessel service speed of about 16 knots. The ship normally runs on only two engines but, when operating conditions dictate, all four engines are brought into service providing enough power to achieve speeds of 18.5 knots. But higher operational speed was never a consideration in project planning. The new propulsion arrangement was selected to provide redundancy, i.e. having an engine out of service would not prevent “M/V Chi-Cheemaun” from sailing according to schedule. When running with just one engine powering each propeller shaft, each of the four new Caterpillar C280-6, 2320bhp propulsion engines provide much improved fuel economy and dramatically lower exhaust emissions compared to the original engines. The new Caterpillar C280-6 propulsion engines, totalling 9,280bhp (provided and engineered by Toromont CAT Power Systems), each have six cylinders in-line with a displacement of 111 litres and, individually, weigh almost 18 tons. They are electronically controlled to provide superior, full range fuel efficiency and low exhaust emissions in accordance with stringent U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Tier 1 and Tier 2 rules. They are also designed to produce full power continuously. A year prior to installation of the new main engines, new generator sets were installed as part of a total electrical system upgrade. At the same time the diesel engine that drove the bow-thruster, (a transversely mounted propeller at the front of the ship used for supplemental steering when docking and undocking), was replaced with a 500bhp variable speed electric motor. This removed a significant source of exhaust emissions and maintenance costs and made control of the thruster unit much easier. To meet the increased electrical demand three new V8 cylinder, Caterpillar 3508B/SR4B marine generator sets, each rated 600kw at 1200rpm, replaced the original 400kw, 12 cylinder units. In common with the new Caterpillar main engines the generator sets have digital electronic controls that allow very precise sharing of the electrical load when required. While underway “M/V Chi-Cheemaun” needs only one generator with a second unit brought on-line during docking and undocking. This minimizes fuel consumption and emissions. The third Caterpillar generator set is on “standby” just in case either of the other two develops a fault. It can start and be on-line within 10 seconds. As an additional safety measure, and in compliance with Canadian and international regulations, a fourth diesel generator set Ken Westcar Marine Market Manager kwestcar@toromont.com 416-667-5697 Sean Goodman Marine Market Manager sgoodman@toromont.com 416-667-5528 Ken Westcar, Marine Market Manager, Toromont, on bridge is installed in a room just below the ship’s funnel. This is a new six-cylinder Caterpillar C9 unit rated 200kw at 1800rpm. It replaced the original, massive twelve-cylinder set. In the unlikely event of a “black-out” this generator set is designed to be on-line within about five seconds to power essential ship’s loads such as emergency lighting, steering and the machinery control system. But we are not done yet! It has two independent starting systems, either compressed air or 24v electric and is kept close to operating temperature at all times. All the new Caterpillar engines are equipped to SOLAS (Safety Of Life At Sea) standards that require all high-pressure fluid connections to be shielded and flexible fuel supply hoses to have fire-resistant jackets. They are also built to the very rigorous quality requirements of Lloyds Register of Shipping, a highly respected international authority and inspectorate of shipboard safety and quality. The skipper and the chief engineer might argue over whether the bridge or the machinery control room is the heart of the “M/V ChiCheemaun” but both received an array of new systems during the two stages of the machinery replacement. The renewal of “M/V Chi-Cheemaun” was completed on-time and on-budget and has exceeded all performance expectations. How was this done? Traditionally the ship owner would have a large technical staff prepare a lengthy detailed specification that would then have been sent out for competitive bids. A different approach was taken for “M/V ChiCheemaun” whereby proposals rather than bids were invited from potential suppliers. The proposals were carefully evaluated from many standpoints and each contractor chosen for technical merit, prior experience, regulatory and environmental compliance, long term, “in-service” support capability, Ontario, Canadian and North American material and labour content and overall value for money. The selected contractors then teamed up under an independent project manager to complete the two stages of the renewal process. With co-operation, effective communications and a solid commitment, the work proceeded quickly and to the highest possible standard. The full capability of some of Ontario and Canada’s finest marine trades people was apparent throughout the project and culminated in the “M/V Chi-Cheemaun” you are travelling on today. For the next quarter century this ship will remain the pride of the Ontario ferry fleet.
