The programmes will provide athletes with the tools to develop to their full potential, using a holistic approach to athlete education and development with some of the best coaches and mentors available. Kristin Development and High Performance Programmes: Benefits for Athletes The programmes provide pathways for the holistic development of athletes and focus on: • Skill development • Nutrition • Fitness testing and monitoring • Goal setting • Sports science • Time management Whilst the programmes are code specific, additional workshops and clinics may be run with guest speakers from various high profile sporting organisations throughout the year. Criteria for Selection A limited number of spaces are available in Development and High Performance programmes. Selection is open to all students who represent Kristin in Football, Hockey and Netball and will be at the discretion of the Head of the Respective Code. The Kristin Sports Plus (Middle School) and IPHA Programmes (Senior School) help our elite athletes manage school work more effectively, without compromising their sporting objectives, and enables them to succeed both on and off the sporting stage. Through a structured planning process with students, parents, Deans and Sports Plus staff and through individual athlete assessment, Sports Plus and IPHA gives all eligible athletes the ability to balance high levels of sporting performance with their academic goals. An Individualised Education Programme will be designed for students involved in the Sports Plus or IPHA Programmes. Middle School: Sports Plus Programme Mission Statement “To provide an environment for high-achieving Kristin Middle School athletes which allows them to fully develop both their sporting and academic potential.” Vision The Sports Plus management team at Kristin is committed to providing a superior experience for Kristin’s elite sports students in the Middle School. “To foster the highest standards of all-round educational achievement for our students by providing a balanced life approach within the curriculum, catering for each student’s individual development: physically, intellectually, socially, emotionally and spiritually.” Sports Plus students will be selected from applications. Programme Description: •Identify talented students who have an opportunity to further their careers in sport •Create an environment where students are challenged in their chosen subjects but are not overloaded with curriculum volume, allowing for recovery and study time outside of training hours •Provide support networks that understand and cater for the demands that are placed on elite sports people •Create a working space that reflects the importance of the programme and welcomes external coaches •Create strong community links •Provide a balanced learning environment that fosters the student’s overall needs and addresses their personal well-being Criteria for Selection All students who attend Kristin Middle School are eligible to apply to be part of the Sports Plus programme. Students in Year 6 will also be identified and encouraged to apply as they enter Year 7. Sporting Ability: •Minimum Regional ‘A’ Age Group, Open Level or national ranking in an individual or team sport. Note that competing at Regional ‘A’ level is no guarantee of acceptance •Students come highly recommended by managers and coaches (It is important to note that attainment levels can vary from one sporting organisation to another, so will also need to be considered.) SPORT HANDBOOK 2014 | 3 Sports Plus and the Individual Programme for High Achievers (IPHA) Attitude and Behaviour: •A record of outstanding sporting commitment •A positive training ethic and commitment towards performance •Active membership of a Kristin sporting team •An excellent attitude towards school work •Demonstrates high levels of respect and a determination to succeed •Achievement of A and B grades for effort in student’s school report The above criteria need to be maintained throughout the year and will be reviewed at the end of each term. Senior School: Individual Programme for High Achievers Mission Statement “To provide an environment for high-achieving Kristin Senior School athletes which allows them to fully develop both their sporting and academic potential.” Vision The IPHA programme is designed for high-achieving Senior School athletes who demonstrate a very advanced ability in one or more sports. It aims to provide eligible students with the opportunity to pursue sporting excellence in a supportive educational environment with the flexibility to accommodate both sport and school commitments. Programme Description Students will be selected from applications. The IPHA programme caters for very elite athletes and is tailored to meet the individual needs of each student. This is achieved in close consultation with the relevant House Deans so that the students’ choices do not adversely affect later subject choices. The school will provide an educational environment which is sufficiently flexible to provide individual support for all areas of the athlete’s academic and sporting commitments. This flexibility may allow students to negotiate deadlines for completion of set work in periods of intense training/competition, after consultation with their House Dean. Criteria for Selection: •Competing at a minimum of National Secondary Schools level, New Zealand Squad, Age Group Team or Age Group Squad in an individual or team sport •High recommendations and references from coaches and Sport Managers •Commitment to school studies •An exemplary record of school conduct •Maintaining the above criteria throughout the year.
