State Legislative Director, Scott “Woody” Wood, has been pushing all the buttons to bring
our Handlebar Bill HB 316 sponsored by State Representative Cliff Rosenberger to the forefront.
We are scheduled to have our 3rd and final hearing before the House Transportation Committee
April 25th and with a little luck on this date our Bill will pass out of Committee to the President of
the House to be put on the Floor for discussion and a vote.
State Senator Tim Schaffer, sponsor of our Right of Way Bill SB 92 is ready to introduce the
last amendment proposed for this bill and we hope this will be the final push to get this Bill moving to update many statues that are way out of date. Now is the time to call on your Locally
Elected Officials and ask them to support our initiatives designed to make travel safer for all
commuters on the Public Highways and Byways in the Great State of Ohio.

Let’s start off with a
great big congratulations
and job well done to our
brothers and sisters to
the North. For those of
you who chose to read
my article first or have
been disconnected from
any sort of news, Friday
the 13th is now a day of
celebration of choice
and freedom in Michigan. That was the day
Michigan Governor Rick
Snyder signed Public
Act 98 into law. Michigan now joins 30 other states allowing adult choice by changing
their out of date mandatory helmet law. This is an effort that started
in 1975. We have to admire the never say die attitude and ability to
keep up the good fight demonstrated by ABATE of Michigan. Even
after back to back gubernatorial vetoes, thanks for nothing Jenny,
the mission remained intact. Again, my hat is off to you.
A big thanks goes out to all who sent in letters, e-mails or made
phone calls in support of the change. The economic impact of increased tourism was a big factor in the decision. So let’s saddle up
and go for a ride into that state up North and show our support. It
will be great to go to a Freedom Rally in June rather than a Helmet
Law Protest.
Let’s use the momentum created by this change to re-energize
ABATE of Ohio’s push for our ROW bill and handle bar height bill.

License, 2) license plate, 3) Insurance dates and 4)
Tires. This can make the rest of the riding season
safe.
Please watch out for those distracted drivers.
They are everywhere. It has become such a problem
that we are now keeping track of the numbers and
there will be more to come later on that.
Sorry this is so short but just so much going

On March 20, 2012 I attended the Motorcycle
Safety Rider Group Meeting
at the Ohio Department of
Public Safety. Several issues were discussed that I
would like to make everyone aware of. One of the
issues was discussed at
this year’s seminar. I
brought up that there were
still many traffic signals
across the state of Ohio that will not recognize motorcycles. I
added that several of these have been reported, but still were not
operating with a motorcycle. I was given contact information and a
guarantee that the information I provided would be followed up on.
Please email the locations of traffic signals that will not change with
the weight of a motorcycle on it to legislativedirector@abate.com. I
will make a list and forward it to my contacts. Please send me an
address at the intersection or the name of the two roads or streets
that intersect, town and a zip code.
We also heard a report from a representative of OSP Traffic
Statistics. This is the agency that compiles the OH1, the report that
law enforcement compiles at the scene of an accident. My question
was why does every motorcycle accident reported have to include
whether or not helmets were being used? I explained that there
was blame implied that motorcycles did not appreciate when it is
irrelevant information. The answer was their report to NHTSA had
to include the information. That does not necessarily mean that the
media had to report that information, but that information sold
newspapers. My suggestion is if you see or hear a news story on a
motorcycle crash that includes whether or not the rider and or passenger was wearing a helmet, and you feel it is irrelevant information contact the media and let them know your feelings. If they get
enough calls maybe they will understand that reporting irrelevant
information is hurting their credibility.
The last issue from this meeting I will bring up here is the
Purple Heart MC License plate. I expressed frustration that this
plate is not being manufactured after a law was passed permitting
the manufacture and sales. The reason we have been given is that
the size of the insignia can not be embossed due to size and the
number of digits required. I answered that this was not an acceptable response as there are other insignias with the same size and
as much detail already in production, besides the point that the
number of digits can easily be dropped by 1 and there would still be
plenty of digits available. The Department of Public Safety promised to look into the situation.
Next topic, ABATE of Ohio, Inc.’s Voter’s Guide for 2012. I am
compiling information about candidates at the state level for both
Ohio’s House of Representatives and the Senate. I have written a 3
question survey that covers current legislation. There is a copy of
this survey in this issue. I need help getting the survey out to candidates. Please get a copy or the survey to state level candidates for
Ohio’s House of Representatives and Ohio’s Senate and have the
candidate complete the survey. Please send completed surveys to
votersguide@abate.com. Cutoff date for the surveys to be emailed
back is 9/1/12.
Final hearing for H.B. 316 and decision on shoulder high
amendment is scheduled for April 25 at 4pm. Check next month for
the outcome.

Lambrettas. For a Mod, the more shiny-chrome rear-view mirrors

Both groups -- and their machines -- will be honored as the 2012
AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days "Marque of the Year." The Rockers
and Mods showcase at Mid-Ohio will be most evident in bike and
scooter shows focused on the two groups, and in a special tent

Next year, on your way to Daytona

want to stop and pay homage to the Hell’s Angels
of the 8th Air Force. There you will find a museum dedicated to the
Mighty 8th of the Army Air Corps. It was in Savannah that the 303rd
Bombardment Group (H) was formed to fight the Germans during WW
II. The Hell’s Angels, as that group called itself, often fought the
“Abbeville Kids,” the German yellow-nosed FW190s. On January 11,
1944, the 303rd made a devastating strike that took out much of the
German Air Force. For this, the Hell’s Angels were awarded a Distinguished Unit Citation for bravery against the enemy. At the Mighty 8th
Museum, you will learn all about those who sacrificed their lives for
ours. An interesting fact that I learned was the 8th suffered more casualties than the entire Marine Corps during WW II.

I own too many vehicles/motorcycles to be proud of. Some
say I have a collection problem, in that most of these vehicles/
motorcycles are not worth much. But I like them, age, rust and all. I like
to think of them as classics - Kentucky classics. Some have estimated
that it takes me up to 2 hours a year just to keep up with the plates and
stickers for the “Kentucky collection.” No problem. But sometimes I
don’t keep up with the plate thing. So imagine this: Bubba-ette pulls me
over after spotting my ‘84 shovel with expired plates. If I go against my
own advice and go 4th Amendment on her (you usually go to jail and
get towed when you do that) I can be stripped searched with no problem
if that is the policy of the local gendarmes.

• Review the levers and pedals to make sure they're still
lubricated, and adjusted and fitted properly. They should not
be broken, bent, or cracked.
• Inspect cables to make sure they are not frayed, kinked, or
folded into sharp angles. Also, test to make sure your bike's
cables at no time interfere with your ability to steer.
• Check hoses for cuts, cracks, leaks, bulges, chafing or
deterioration. Like cables, hoses should not interfere with
your steering or suspension, and should not be folded into
sharp angles.
• Test that the throttle moves freely, does not stick and snaps
closed when released.

• If you removed your battery over the winter, re-install it your owner's manual should tell you how. Check the battery
to make sure the terminals are clean and tight, and that it's
properly charged and secured. Check the vent tube to confirm it is not kinked or plugged, and is routed properly.
• Look over the lenses on the bike to make sure they are not
cracked or broken, are securely mounted and do not have
excessive condensation trapped within.
• Make sure the reflectors are not cracked, broken and are
securely mounted.
• Review the bike's headlamp for cracks. Confirm it points at
the right height and direction. Test the operation of the high
beam and low beam options.
• Test the tail lamp and brake lights to make sure they work
when they should, and they are not cracked. Clean and ensure they are properly secured.
• Test both of the turn signals - left and right!

• Check the levels and quality of the engine oil, transmission oil,

• Make sure the front forks and rear shocks are properly
adjusted.
• Check the tension of the belt or chain. Lubricate the chain
if needed, and inspect the teeth of the sprockets confirming
they are not hooked and are properly mounted.
• Replace broken or missing fasteners and tighten if loosened.

• For both center stands and side stands, make sure they are
not cracked or bent and that the stand springs into place and
has the required tension to hold the bike in position.
For more spring-ready tips, check your owner's manual. It's
sure to have a checklist for getting your particular make and model of
bike ready for a summer of riding after a long winter of inactivity.
Also, don't be shy to take it into a professional for a spring tune-up if
you are at all unsure or uncertain. It will be money well spent.
Now that you, or a professional, has inspected the bike to
make sure it's ready for the coming riding season, let's not forget that
your riding skills have not been practiced in quite a few months. In
fact, it's likely you're down right rusty (it's been a long winter after all.)
Make your first ride a short one at low speeds. A test ride in a parking
lot or around the block will give you an opportunity to get a feel again
for the skills required to brake and maneuver a bike safely. You can
even take a refresher course. After all, if your bike needs a tune-up,
wouldn't also the rider? There are courses designed specifically for the
experienced rider that builds upon existing rider skills.
Finally, ADJUST YOUR MOTORCYCLE INSURANCE
COVERAGE. Many insurance companies will allow you to remove
road or driving coverages on your bike over the winter months. Now
that you're getting your bike ready for the road, you will need to revise
that coverage. Since motorcycle insurance rates can vary significantly
year to year, it's wise to compare motorcycle insurance quotes
every year before committing to another season of monthly
insurance premiums; and riders looking to buy a new ride
should compare insurance quotes for different models to see
how much they'll cost to insure before they make a final decision.

merging carefully into the open lane.
- On two-lane highways, stay behind the last truck in the

new paint the few minutes it needs to dry. If traffic backs up behind
the striping train, crews will pull out of the way where it is safe to do
so and let congestion clear.
- If you drive through wet paint, which is water-based,
clean your bike as quickly as possible with a high-powered water hose
such as those used in car washes.

SPRING ROADWORK GUIDELINES
These notes come from the Missouri DOT, but apply
to all of the places we ride. - Rod
The spring pavement striping program has begun,
and drivers will see slow-moving caravans of trucks painting
roadways throughout the state. Crisp, easy-to-see striping is a
significant safety feature on roadways. The paint contains glass
beads that reflect light from headlights in the dark. The striping
trains move between 8 mph and 12 mph when workers are
painting white and yellow lines on the highways. The trucks
have flashing lights, boards with flashing arrows and signs that
say "Wet Paint."
Many striping crews are working 12-hour days
Monday through Saturday. Although most of the striping is
done during daylight hours, some nighttime work will be
scheduled when traffic volumes are lighter. Rain or very damp
conditions will cancel or cut short any striping work that is
scheduled.
Safety Tips
Motorists should use caution in and around the
striping equipment and crew workers. Here are riding tips to
remember when coming upon a striping project:

My Fellow Citizens,
Columbiana County’s Daytona Party held at the State Line Tavern
in E. Palestine March 10 was a fantastic time! They had a great turnout, the band “Road Hogs” played all kinds of my favorite music, and
the food was phenomenal. I hung with people from Stark, Summit,
Trumbull, Mahoning, and Portage counties. Even a few from Region
1 showed up. It’s good to see people from surrounding counties
participating in each other’s events.
At the Regional meeting held at the Sail Inn in Lake Milton March
11 we worked out most of the details for the Regional Party and Hog
Roast to be held at Pooch’s in Mecca on July 21-22. As it now
stands, the party will officially start Saturday the 21 without a poker
run. However the various counties are urged to organize runs to the
event that day. Of course, vendors and workers will be admitted in
for the weekend on Friday.
We decided our Trum/Mah county meeting for July will be held at
Pooch’s on the 14th to tie up any loose ends. Other talk was of having an ABATE booth at “Motorcycle Madness” in downtown Newton
Falls June 24, and at the “Harley in the Park” event in downtown
Warren Sept. 15.
We didn’t have an ABATE booth at the Yankee Lake swap meet
put on by Unique Biker Apparel on March 18 due to an unforeseen
circumstance. But we should have one at their next one, which will
probably be in November. I went to the one on the 18th and had a
great time. I even dug out a few musty bucks and bought a few
things. The crowd was huge, with lots of good parts new and used,
on sale or for trade... though most people don’t actually “swap” at
swap meets any more.
Our March meeting held at Leon’s in Howland the 24th had more
than 35 people in attendance. Capri Cafaro, State Rep. for the 32nd
Senate District, was our guest speaker. She addressed various local
topics, and (most importantly) assured us she still has our backs on
motorcyclist’s issues. And she even re-upped as a member of
ABATE!
Please remember there will be NO MEETNG IN JUNE due to a
busy calendar. But don’t forget that a few of those things are: Our
Mah/Trum “Not Just Another Damned Poker Run,” which will be
June 16 out of the Bristolville Inn (hope y’all can make it), and our
state party (the “June Jam”) on the weekend of the 22nd.
Our May 19 meeting will be at the Ice House Inn on Rt. 46 in
Austintown near I-76. As usual, a map should be on our regional

never been there before, they have great wings and an incredible
menu. It’s also the location of one of the better “Bike Nites” in the
area, held every Tuesday late afternoon and early evening in the
huge parking lot in the rear of the main building. There’s even a
separate pool hall back there. Usually Fast Freddie from the
“Wolf” (93.3 FM) is there spinning tunes and emceeing. There’s also
the permanent open-air “Beach Bar” out back, and they have a few
bike games every week. They even allow some vendors to set up. If I
can get off my ass, I’ll try to get an ABATE table together for recruitment there each week like I used to.
By the way: There will be a free (of course) water-volleyball/pool/
bar party here at my house starting at noon Saturday, July 28 in
honor of, and to show appreciation for, all members (local and not)
who have volunteered to work events like our Hog Roast, our poker
runs, have organized and attended meetings, and have done all of
the other things that usually require someone to give up their time,
effort and often some of their own money on behalf of ABATE.
Come help me show these people how much we appreciate what
they do. Overnight tent camping (or sleeping on a couch, on the
floor, in a bed or wherever) is urged for those who might party too
much to drive home, and I always throw out a GREAT breakfast.
There will be a fire out back, the hot tub and pool are open, and the
bar is stocked (but BYOB if ya can). There will be “Corn Hole” tossing on the deck, and we might even make some acoustical music
around the campfire later in the night (as long as we don’t piss off my
neighbors LOL). My place is VERY easy to find, but anyone interested MUST phone me at 330-872-1198, or email @ abatebummer@aol.com ASAP so I can at least get an idea of how many is
coming. Everyone, even from outside the region (if they feel like a
road trip) is welcome to attend. I might even post it in “Shootin’ the
Breeze” next month. So if you’re interested in coming, get hold of the
sooner and me to let me know ...the better.

What’s Up People?
Man can you believe the turn out that Region 1 has been having at
each of our events this year?
I'd like to thank all who have helped and who have attended each
of the Region 1 events.
These events and fundraisers that we have are the blood that runs
through the veins of ABATE of Ohio, Inc. So keep showing your
support and enthusiasm to make these functions happen. And,
when you run into someone that you have just met out riding that
machine you love to ride, don't forget to mention the good things that
we got going on in ABATE.

Let them know what it’s all about, cause most people have no
clue unless YOU speak up. It’s no different than telling them
about that night that you just had crusin’ with your bros.
You know I finally was able to get out to take a ride with a
brother and got to take in some of the beautiful riding that we
have here in our great state of Ohio. We just cruised and sometimes stopped to take in the sights. Being able to ride those roads
at our own pace, taking in each and every curve like we owned it
– we realized that nothing gets better than this. Sometimes it just
takes getting out there and running a whole tank out and refueling
just to clear the ole head.
It makes ya wonder why bikers know how a dog feels having
his head hanging out the window in the wind, lol. Got to say
its freaking Groovy!
I hope everyone's first ride was as good to you as it was to me
and that you have many more.
Don't forget the ABATE of Ohio, Inc. Motorcycle Awareness
Rally May 5, in Columbus, Ohio. I would hope to see a good turn
out of support from our region to show the Capital that we mean
business when it comes to our rights as motorcyclists.
The plan is to meet and ride up and make a presence as REGION 1. So if you’re needing details and this gets to you in time
don't hesitate to call.
Region 1 is having the annual Freedom Run May 19, so hope
to see you there. There will be best hand and worst hand in
poker, silent auction, raffles, door prizes, food, music and
new stories to tell. So shine that ride and come and enjoy the
good ride and all fun that comes with it.
Our state party is soon so get signed up for June Jam, it’s just
around the corner and signing up early saves you some cash.
Also the Motorcycle Memorial Foundation is having their Rally in
Hopedale, Ohio this Memorial Day. If you’re
free and want
to take a ride and camp and have a blast make your way there.

road and the gods. And least don't forget those who have given
and sacrificed without question, our Men and Women of The

heck you enjoyed yourself. From my observation point, you all
looked like you did. I did get up there and attempted to dance a
few times. But let me tell you, I was in some discomfort the next
day. (I’m not liking my "Golden" years.)
Of course, I'm referring to the ABATE Region 2 benefit dance that
was held on March 24, at the VFW on Putnam Ave. This year's
dance was another success with more people joining us and
more items collected for the silent auction. We also had three
people who signed up to become members. WELCOME
ABOARD!!!!! We are growing here in Region 2, maybe not as fast
as my husband Terry would like, but we seem to be getting bigger
each year. Have patience, sweetie. It will happen.
I would like to thank the band "COLLISION COUSRE" for giving
us a swinging time. Myself, I thought they were very good. At
least I could understand the words they sang. Some of the songs
were close to my time frame. They set up early and started singing exactly on time. So it worked out just fine.
Our appreciation goes to the VFW, for letting us use their hall for
the party, and Danny Rapol, Ozzie, and Chrissy for their help in
setting up. They are a great group of people. I understand we will
be there again. If it's not broke, why try to fix it?
Thanks go to all the people who brought in items for our silent
auction. To those who prepared some of the food, to those who
kept the food fresh and available to us. To the cleanup crew and
all the other people and supporters who gave of themselves. We
worked together and everything came off without a hitch. WE
make a great team. Let's continue this into the future and make
next year an even bigger and better event. WE CAN DO IT.
Do not forget on May 5th, we have the state "May Awareness
Run". Please try to attend. To see hundreds of bikes in the procession is quite a sight. Also, mark your calendar for Region 2
"Awareness Run" on May 20th. If you have ANY questions on
these events and I'm sure you do since I didn't tell you everything,
(it's another age thing as I seem to have forgotten), please call

Remember, we can always use suggestions. The floor is always
open. Don't be backward. Remember biker riders are big, tough
and loud (or so they say). We can discuss anything and work it all

The State Awareness Rally will be held May 5. We will be meeting at various spots along I-71 north to gather riders to proceed to
Columbus as a group. Some of us will meet at the Arby's located
at the Montgomery Road Exit 12, next to the Kenwood Towne
Centre; we will depart from this location at 7:30 a.m. We will head
to the first rest area at mile marker 34, just north of Exit 32 for
State Route 123 to meet up with other riders; we will depart from
this location at 8 a.m. We will head to the second rest area at mile
marker 67, the last group meet before heading to Columbus; we
will depart from this location at 9 a.m.
Clinton County is having their Cancer Run May 12, starting in
Wilmington at the American Legion Post 49.
Due to sponsor issues, the Destination CycleSafe 2012 event
has been cancelled.
If all goes well, between the time I am writing this and the time
you are reading this, Michigan will be joining the list of States
which have repealed its helmet laws; legislation has passed awaiting the Governor's signature. The final outcome will be published
on the Region website as well as the May monthly e-mail newsletter.
And by the way, the next time you are at a statewide ABATE
event, such as the May Awareness Rally or June Jam, track down
and be sure to thank Diane Thompson for all the work she has
done improving the OutSpokin' magazine.

your fellow
members/business owners when possible as they support us in our endeavors.
If you are a member that has a business not listed in our directory, please notify the state office to have your information added here.
This is a free service to you for being an ABATE Member. You must agree to offer a 10 percent discount to ABATE Members
showing a valid membership card.
