104 - Somerset Art Works
Welcome Contents Welcome to Somerset Art Weeks Open Studios Event 2014. This year we have 205 venues showing a huge variety of work. Artists from every background and discipline in their studios - places that are usually private working environments. They can be functional and clear or, more usually, chaotic and cluttered reflecting the working practice of the artist and the sources of their inspiration - places to collect thoughts as well as produce work. It can be a privilege to be allowed in. Word from Patron Inside Cover About SAW Inside Cover Welcome1 How to use the guide 3 Special Events 4 The Levels and Moors 5 Education Pack & Family Friendly Final Weekend Central Spread There are also many affiliated special events happening during Art Weeks. They include an artist talk and tour at Hestercombe Gardens and Gallery, near Taunton on the 3 October, where exciting developments have made this magnificent house and garden into a new venue for contemporary art. We also present to you a guided tour of the exhibitions and garden at Hauser & Wirth Somerset in Bruton on the 30 September. Each year, SAW also works with individuals, organisations and schools to develop their open studios event. We are delighted to work with Millfield School in Street and Bruton School for Girls to offer new and exciting work. Don’t miss The Levels and Moors: New work by four Somerset artists. As part of the Creative Pathways, a Professional Development Programme for SAW member artists, we are working with venues across Somerset to support artists to make new works and develop their audiences. Limited editions of the new works will be available for purchase. More details see page 5. The last weekend of the Open Studios event (4 & 5 October), will be Family Friendly Final Weekend. Many venues are offering activities for visitors of all ages, including young children, from printmaking to ceramics with many activities free. A full list of activities being offered can be found in the central spread of this guide. SAW’s Art Weeks’ reputation continues to grow and this year we have attracted many artists to open their doors for the first time and a few are located beyond our traditional county boundary. We are delighted to include Keith Varney, Speckled Wood and Elisabeth Barry, who have opened their studios near Bath. See venue 135. Lastly I can’t help mentioning that it’s not been an easy year for much of Somerset - nature flexed its muscles on the Levels and some exhibitors haven’t been able to take part this time round as a result - I wish them all better luck this winter and look forward to their renewed energy for 2015. His talk will draw parallels between the self-portraits of West Somerset artists on display in Making an Exhibition of Ourselves at Contains Art and examples of the ways various artists from the past have pictured themselves. 4 artists have been selected to create new works specific to the theme The Levels and Moors, offering unique artistic responses to the visitor, reflecting on the landscape of Somerset. Joy Merron, Andrea Oke, Lucy Pendrick and Mayumi Kaneko received bursaries in June this year to create a collection of new work in their chosen medium and set up temporary workspaces in allocated venues during Art Weeks. Mayumi Kaneko bottega-yu.net Mayumi presents a range of lights made by handwoven fabric using Japanese paper yarn made from Washi paper. Her work is inspired by the surrounding environment, including ripples on a stream and the pattern of fallen leaves in autumn. Venue 108: Somerset Guild of Craftsmen, Somerton As part of SAW’s Creative Pathways, a professional development programme for SAW artist members, this project aims to support Somerset artists to make new work and promote this to the wider public. Supported by Friends of SAW and host venues. Joy Merron www.joymerron.co.uk Graduated with MA Design: Fashion and Textiles at Bath Spa University, she has been selected to create a large scale public realm piece at the new Breast Care Centre at Southmead Hospital, Bristol. Her new work investigates how water and sunlight transform the environment for fleeting moments or more permanently. She has interpreted this into an installation created by cut layers of materials and moving images. Venue 132: Black Swan Art Centre in Frome Visitors are welcome to see their work and meet the artists. Limited editions of work will be available for purchase. For more information please go to sawcreativepathways.wordpress.com/ Lucy Pendrick A self taught artist who creates miniature felt animals setting them against carefully selected foraged finds in Somerset. Lucy has created a collection of new work capturing the essence and wildlife of the moor from its wild open spaces to its secret combes with incredibly detailed felt animals to loose felt work filled with expression. I stretch the silk over a frame large enough to fit my easel. I work in thin layers at first, working up gradually to thicker paint and greater detail. When the painting is finished it is taken off the stretcher and restretched over a smaller strainer which fits the painting and the frame. I make an extra frame so that my same-size print looks, as far as possible, exactly like the original painting. I use artworks, exercises and workshops to help us explore the trees, and our environment, so we have a better understanding of our changing world. I use coppiced and found wood to make artworks. Having explored watercolour and pastel I now paint mostly in acrylic with subjects ranging from local and foreign landscapes to still life, animals and birds. From small pictures to large canvasses, I love a challenge of producing adventurous colour combinations and complex subjects. Both framed and unframed paintings for sale. Sue Cullen: I’m inspired by the plants and flowers that grow in my garden and the wider landscape. My paintings incorporate different watercolour techniques often embellished with other medium in a free flowing sometimes abstract style. Work for sale ranges from £25 -£250 for original pieces to £1.50 for a card. Jean Chisolm: I have a passion for natural fibres and threads, creating both pictures and garments, using nature as my inspiration. Open 11am - 6pm, see the calendar below for opening and closing dates. Images from the natural and man-made worlds are selected for their geometric and pattern characteristics. These are explored through complex repetition in drawing, painting and printmaking together with experimental mixed media approaches.
