104 - Somerset Art Works
Welcome
Contents
Welcome to Somerset Art Weeks Open Studios Event 2014. This year we have 205
venues showing a huge variety of work. Artists from every background and discipline in their
studios - places that are usually private working environments. They can be functional and
clear or, more usually, chaotic and cluttered reflecting the working practice of the artist and
the sources of their inspiration - places to collect thoughts as well as produce work. It can
be a privilege to be allowed in.

Central Spread
There are also many affiliated special events happening during Art Weeks. They include an artist talk and tour at
Hestercombe Gardens and Gallery, near Taunton on the 3 October, where exciting developments have made this
magnificent house and garden into a new venue for contemporary art. We also present to you a guided tour of the
exhibitions and garden at Hauser & Wirth Somerset in Bruton on the 30 September. Each year, SAW also works with
individuals, organisations and schools to develop their open studios event. We are delighted to work with Millfield
School in Street and Bruton School for Girls to offer new and exciting work.
Don’t miss The Levels and Moors: New work by four Somerset artists. As part of the Creative Pathways, a Professional
Development Programme for SAW member artists, we are working with venues across Somerset to support artists to
make new works and develop their audiences. Limited editions of the new works will be available for purchase. More
details see page 5.
The last weekend of the Open Studios event (4 & 5 October), will be Family Friendly Final Weekend. Many venues
are offering activities for visitors of all ages, including young children, from printmaking to ceramics with many activities
free. A full list of activities being offered can be found in the central spread of this guide.
SAW’s Art Weeks’ reputation continues to grow and this year we have attracted many artists to open their doors for
the first time and a few are located beyond our traditional county boundary. We are delighted to include Keith Varney,
Speckled Wood and Elisabeth Barry, who have opened their studios near Bath. See venue 135.
Lastly I can’t help mentioning that it’s not been an easy year for much of Somerset - nature flexed its muscles on the
Levels and some exhibitors haven’t been able to take part this time round as a result - I wish them all better luck this
winter and look forward to their renewed energy for 2015.

SOMERSET OPEN STUDIOS
Artists Seila Fernandez Arconada and Jethro
Brice will work with community groups in the
Langport area to create a replica of the traditional
Parrett Flatner from recycled materials. Through
a series of creative workshops, local children and
young people will reflect on their experiences
of flooding and articulate a vision of Somerset’s
future. Local groups are invited to accompany the
flatner on a triumphant journey from Langport to
Bridgwater on the outgoing tide, as the final event
of the project.

Andy Davey:
The Artist’s
Self-Portrait
Contains Art, East Quay, Watchet, TA23 0AQ
Tuesday 30 September, 7 – 9pm
In Andy’s recent work he has been looking at
and reworking artists’ self-portraits. His talk
will draw parallels between the self-portraits of
West Somerset artists on display in Making an
Exhibition of Ourselves at Contains Art and
examples of the ways various artists from the past
have pictured themselves.
4 artists have been selected to create new works
specific to the theme The Levels and Moors,
offering unique artistic responses to the visitor,
reflecting on the landscape of Somerset. Joy
Merron, Andrea Oke, Lucy Pendrick and
Mayumi Kaneko received bursaries in June this
year to create a collection of new work in their
chosen medium and set up temporary workspaces
in allocated venues during Art Weeks.
Mayumi Kaneko
bottega-yu.net
Mayumi presents a range of lights made by handwoven fabric using Japanese paper yarn made
from Washi paper. Her work is inspired by the
surrounding environment, including ripples on a
stream and the pattern of fallen leaves in autumn.
Venue 108: Somerset Guild of Craftsmen,
Somerton
As part of SAW’s Creative Pathways, a
professional development programme for SAW
artist members, this project aims to support
Somerset artists to make new work and promote
this to the wider public. Supported by Friends of
SAW and host venues.
Joy Merron
www.joymerron.co.uk
Graduated with MA Design: Fashion and Textiles
at Bath Spa University, she has been selected to
create a large scale public realm piece at the new
Breast Care Centre at Southmead Hospital, Bristol.
Her new work investigates how water and sunlight
transform the environment for fleeting moments or
more permanently. She has interpreted this into an
installation created by cut layers of materials and
moving images.
Venue 132: Black Swan Art Centre in Frome
Visitors are welcome to see their work and
meet the artists. Limited editions of work will be
available for purchase.
For more information please go to

Lucy Pendrick
A self taught artist who creates miniature felt
animals setting them against carefully selected
foraged finds in Somerset. Lucy has created a
collection of new work capturing the essence and
wildlife of the moor from its wild open spaces
to its secret combes with incredibly detailed felt
animals to loose felt work filled with expression.
Her bursary is supported by Exmoor Branch of
NADFAS (The National Association of Decorative &
Fine Art Societies)
Venue 27: Number Seven, Dulverton
Andrea Oke
andreaoke.weebly.com
Currently completing a BA (hons) in Drawing
and Applied Arts at the University of the West
of England in Bristol. Her new work includes a
combination of sound with moving drawings to try
and capture a sense of the Somerset Levels and
Moors and its unique environment and inhabitants.
During Open Studios, she will show the stop
motion animation together with sketchbooks,
prints and drawings. She is kindly hosted by
Simon Ledson and Jane Peck at their studio.

Peggy’s work has a contemporary quality and a
strong sense of decorative design. Many of her
images are based on direct observation of both
the natural world and man-made objects. Lino is
the main medium and prints are limited editions.
Knitted panels are based on the work of modern
artists.
Unusual still lives and birds are the focus of Leo’s
SAW exhibition this year - as well as new city, sea
and landscapes from Leo’s travels and paintings
of an architectural nature. Watercolours, oils,
drawings, prints and cards.
Lucy Pearn lives in the heart of Exmoor and
is inspired by the landscape and animals
which surround her. Lucy works in a variety
of media including watercolour, pastel and
oil. Subject’s include deer, cattle, sheep, pigs,
horses, dogs, and of course, farmers. Lucy also
undertakes commissions

Rivenrod at Scarlett’s Garden
Painting, Prints, Drawing
Books, Mixed Media, Painting, Prints, Drawing
My miniatures are painted in oil on silk. I stretch
the silk over a frame large enough to fit my easel.
I work in thin layers at first, working up gradually
to thicker paint and greater detail. When the
painting is finished it is taken off the stretcher and
restretched over a smaller strainer which fits the
painting and the frame. I make an extra frame so
that my same-size print looks, as far as possible,
exactly like the original painting.
Six international prizes from leading Miniature Art
Societies have been awarded to me over the past
year, which brings the total count to ninety-four
altogether.

Sylvia Lindley & Ophelia Lindley
Painting, Prints, Drawing
Both Sylvia and Ophelia are inspired by the countryside, animals, landscape and architecture. Sylvia
works mainly in oils with some acrylic. Ophelia in watercolour and some mixed media. Greetings card
available.
David Struwig: My work is about colour, texture,
and the feeling that the viewer has when seeing
it. I like people to make their own story and to see
more the more you look.
I work on canvas and swing between abstract/
landscape to abstract. My most recent works have
been about the feeling I get when listening to a
specific piece of music. I find my inspiration all over
and can continue on a theme to a point and then
its done.
Di Goring: An eclectic mix of paintings in oil,
watercolour and acrylic. From land and sea scapes
inspired by our beautiful surroundings in the south
west, to local town scapes and portraiture. I like to
paint outdoors and to experiment in the styles of
expressionists and the old masters. I also like to
create a little humour!
Jan Rimmer: I individually hand dye silk scarves

Sue Heys Stained Glass & Bern Sawle Artworks
Roy Cooney, RMS, HS, MASF
Glass, Jewellery, Silverwork, Photography
Printmaking
Sue Heys specialises in copper foil stained glass and fused glass - in particular lamps, decorative mirrors,
suncatchers, wall & window panels, bowls and dishes in both traditional and modern designs.
The exhibition includes a wide range of limited
edition original prints and miniatures hand printed
from the now rare medium of copperplate line
engraving. This is an opportunity to view the tools,
techniques and printing methods used for this
historic art form - similar to those used by
Albrect Dürer.
In the world of glass, Bern Sawle is developing ideas and techniques for more sculptural and fashion
based items. He is also working to a more tonal and textural feel to his pieces.

Sue Cullen & Jean Chisolm
Painting, Prints, Drawing, Textiles, Fashion
My art practice has been transformed by my
tree dowsing skills. I use artworks, exercises and
workshops to help us explore the trees, and our
environment, so we have a better understanding of
our changing world. I use coppiced and found wood
to make artworks.
Having explored watercolour and pastel I now paint
mostly in acrylic with subjects ranging from local
and foreign landscapes to still life, animals and
birds. From small pictures to large canvasses, I
love a challenge of producing adventurous colour
combinations and complex subjects. Both framed
and unframed paintings for sale.
Sue Cullen: I’m inspired by the plants and flowers that grow in my garden and the wider landscape. My
paintings incorporate different watercolour techniques often embellished with other medium in a free
flowing sometimes abstract style.
Work for sale ranges from £25 -£250 for original pieces to £1.50 for a card.
Jean Chisolm: I have a passion for natural fibres and threads, creating both pictures and garments, using
nature as my inspiration. The sewing machine, hand stitching and threads add depth and texture to my
water colour painting and to garments and accessories which I will make to order.

Working with mixed media, Donna’s work explores
human touch, past moments and the notion of
memories. She often uses items that are misplaced
and things that she has found, connecting identity
with relationships and objects. These items
are stored and categorised, through emotion,
recollection and memory the viewer is taken on a

Wood
Mixed Media, Painting, Prints, Drawing, Printmaking
I am emerging from a bereavement, finding
creativity, colour and composition using oil paints
and palette knives, healing. Retirement from special
needs teaching has given me time and space
to develop in my own studio in the last 2 years.
Bliss! Price range £40-180.
I always look forward to Somerset Art Weeks
Open Studio event. It gives me the opportunity to
share with others my love of woodturning and the
excitement of discovering the colour and grain
pattern hidden in the wood. Timber is obtained
locally and I allow the wood’s natural characteristics
to influence my designs in creative bowls, hollow
forms and utility items. Open 11am - 6pm, see the
calendar below for opening and closing dates.
Images from the natural and man-made worlds
are selected for their geometric and pattern
characteristics. These are explored through
complex repetition in drawing, painting and
printmaking together with experimental mixed
media approaches. My outcomes show mostly
a dedication to abstraction where opportunities
to present colour, pattern, texture and line are
prominent with works being striking and often
challenging. Work in progress during the exhibition
will be a ready starting point for discussion and
appreciation.

Hayley Trezise - Raggedy
Mixed Media, Painting, Prints, Drawing, Printmaking
Mixed Media, Sculpture, Textiles, Fashion
Founder of Cameratechart ™, Fiona MackenzieSpence’s photographic work epitomises the
marriage between Fine Art and Technology with
a highly unusual result and individual style that is
fresh and contemporary. Fiona also paints using
mixed media, describing her work as “a meeting
of paint to a surface that is instinctive and entirely
abstract”.
I am a semi abstract oil painter and printmaker and
my main subject is landscape. I enjoy using mixed
media and collage. My printing techniques include
screen, monotypes and collagraphs. My work
ranges in price from £40 - £350. I will be working
on collagraph prints during Open Studios.
Hayley Trezise ‘Raggedy’ holds the environment
and self-expression at the heart of every garment.
Breathing new life into society’s cast-offs, creating
unique, ‘wearable art’ with a fun, quirky, distinct
style, showing Hayley’s passion for textures and
organic, sculptural shapes. Her desires are that we
all ‘dress like nobody’s judging’.
Fiona’s work can be found at the Eclectic Life

Form, line, texture fascinate Keith. He is inspired
by the ways these elements interact with light,

Speckled Wood combine wood, paint, wax, a

Painting, Prints, Drawing
Prints and paintings set in a contemporary wagon
studio. Caroline uses a wide variety of printmaking
techniques - from linocuts, etchings, monoprints
and collographs, with mixed media - to capture her
love of landscape ,wildlife and natural forms. The
artist will be on hand to give demonstrations of her
printmaking techniques.
Welcome to my studio. Here I sit, throughout
the year and get a wonderful view of the world
- sky, shapely hills and trees to mark the year.
Bare branches, then the purple hue of buds, the
brightest greens through to the autumn glory. Back
again to winter and staying in the studio listening
the rain. Paintings from my local walks and travels
to Cornwall.

Aquara Soma is an international visionary artist. Working with real 22 carat gold leaf, quartz crystals and
beautiful semi-precious stones, she creates sacred and special pieces of art. She has been painting all her
life and exhibiting internationally for over 11 years; through her work she shares a journey, the inner world
of the divine feminine creativity.
Celia Dickson creates relief wood carvings, sculpture, drawings, life drawings and prints. She has been
producing unusual, carved, wooden reliefs for many years. Generally inspired by travel and the effects
of mystical transpersonal experiences through spiritual practice and contemplation, Celia is also fascinated
by nature’s way of reminding us that life is imbued with maths in art, as in fibonacci spirals and fractals. Prints and postcards of both artists’ work will also be available.Middlewick has ample parking and a lovely

Painting, Prints, Drawing
This year I shall be showing work in oils, gouache,
monoprint and charcoal. My main subject is the
landscape, with possibly a domestic scene. I paint
the changing face of nature, sunny, awesomely
dark or capricious. My aim is to draw from the
everyday scene or object a sense of the mystery
of existence, by constantly exploring new uses of
colour and its relationship to essential form. Prices from £75 to £700.
Intriguing contemporary work by prominent local
and international artists. Unique studios overlooking
the Somerset Levels.
Simon Ledson: Spirit Level a personal perspective
on the recent floods and storms, an observational
study. Understanding form, light and space. Sky,
ocean and earth are the elements in these scapes.
Jane Peck: showing a new body of work, coats
and jackets inspired by classic retro designs using
vintage fabrics from the 50s and 60s alongside
contemporary jewellery influenced by travels to
different cultures.
Andrea Oke: Combining sound with moving
drawings to try and capture a sense the Somerset

inhabitants. Her stop motion animation together
with sketchbooks, prints and drawings will be
displayed during the open studios event. Andrea is

Momentum
Somerset Art Weeks Festival 2015
Planning for next year’s Art Weeks is already underway. The event will take
place from Saturday 3rd October to Sunday 18th October 2015. The Festival
Programme will be created around the theme ‘Momentum’. We are currently
developing a range of partnerships, commissions and projects that offer high
quality contemporary arts in Somerset to a wider audience. If you are planning or
developing a project or exhibition and wish to discuss ways of how you can be
a part of the Art Weeks Festival next year, please contact us on

SAW’s New Website
Somerset Art Works currently has over 400
members and continues to support the
development of Visual Arts in Somerset and
growing its audiences. With the support from
the Arts Council England Lottery funding, we are
able to re-develop our website which helps us
to provide better information and services to our
members and audiences. We worked with Thirty8
Digital, award winning creative design agency in
South West. The new website is also designed to
be viewed on smartphone and tablet.
