We have gone from strength to strength over the last couple of years and we were delighted to win the 2015 Best Conference Award at the recent UK Association Awards for last year’s conference and we have worked hard again this year to maintain this high standard. I would like to say a big thank you to our Organising Committee, our Board for all of their support during my two year Presidency and all of the Scottish Bakers team led by Alan who have provided high quality services to all of our members during this time. The conference weekend starts on Friday afternoon and we are delighted to welcome more than 30 exhibitors to our conference. These are a combination of ingredient manufacturers, bakery wholesalers and providers of professional and other services to our trade. I would like to say a very big thank you to Louise Reynard, Managing Director of Reynards, for sponsoring the exhibition drinks reception and to Scottish Baker Ambassador Mich Turner MBE who, along with myself, will be visiting each of the stands. After the exhibition we will have a break and the evening begins with a welcome from Glasgow City Council, we are delighted that once again they have very kindly sponsored our Friday evening drinks reception. After dinner we will have the Scottish Baker of the Year Regional Awards where we have the opportunity to 4 celebrate the best of Scottish Baking. Following this we will have dancing to the fabulous Roadrunner who will play until midnight. Mich is compering our conference this year and Saturday starts with a little bit of fun, with our first ever Great Scottish Bakory Off, where two teams from BAKO will compete in a Generation Game style challenge! It’s one not to miss. Key speakers this year include Mark Tomlinson Chief Executive Officer of the BAKO North Western Group who are our Conference & Awards Partner. I would like to thank Mark & his team for the support that they have given us since they acquired BAKO Northern & Scotland last year. We welcome back James Withers & Tom O’Toole who both have presented in previous years. James will be giving us an update on the refresh of the food and drink strategy for Scotland and Tom will be wowing us with his enthusiasm for the bakery sector. Having the opportunity to visit Tom last year at the Beechworth Bakery was an experience I will always remember and if you haven’t heard him before you are in for a treat! As part of the work of our Export Group we will have the opportunity to hear from Juan Carlos Jeffrey or JC as he is known. JC is part of the Scottish Development International Food and Drink specialists who are now helping our members to sell products all over the world. Mich will be hosting a session entitled ‘We are the Champions’ where we have the opportunity to learn a bit more from the winners of the Scottish Baker of the Year Awards, Gordon & Ian McGhee from D McGhee & Sons, George Ross from JG Ross, Michelle Phillips from Mimi’s Bakehouse, World Scotch Pie Champion Stephen McAllister from the Kandy Bar and the winner of Craft Bakers Week Most Loved Bakery in England Daniel Carr from Warings Bakery. After lunch Alan will present a review of our year including showcasing our new online James Allan Bakery Academy. The afternoon finishes on a very different note with Scottish forensic mind reader Colin Cloud bringing our conference to a close. On Saturday evening we are delighted to have our Presidential Drinks Reception sponsored by Sudzucker UK, a big thank you to them. Following this we have our Presidential Banquet and the Scottish Baker of the Year Awards, again compered by Mich Turner. It is fantastic to see the number of entrants and the pride and passion that there is in the bakery sector in Scotland. We have built strong links with our sister organisations, the Craft Bakers Association, the Irish Association of Master Bakers, the Flour Confectionery and Bakers Association (of Ireland), the Federation of Bakers, the British Society of Baking, the Association of Bakery Students & Trainees, the Worshipful Company of Bakers and the British Confectionery Association, and I am delighted to welcome their Presidents and Board members here at this year’s conference and awards. We hope you enjoy our conference weekend and take the opportunity to meet up with old friends and take the time to make new ones. I look forward to seeing you all there. FUTURE PROOFING THE INDUSTRY MESSAGE FROM CHIEF EXECUTIVE Alan Clarke, Chief Executive Thank you for attending this year’s conference and we are absolutely delighted to welcome you to our 125th Anniversary Conference. We hope you agree that we have a varied and interesting weekend ahead. Firstly, a big thank you to our Conference & Awards partner BAKO North Western Group and to all of our sponsors, without whose support we would not be able to put on a conference of this quality or to produce the Scottish Baker of the Year Awards. The level of support this year has been overwhelming and we would encourage you to support all of our suppliers, especially during the supplier showcase on Friday afternoon where they have many offers including 5% off all orders on specific products from BAKO North Western Group. (terms and conditions apply). Carr’s Flour has commissioned and registered a Scottish Bakers tartan in commemoration of our 125th Anniversary and we would like to say a massive thank you for this thoughtful gift which will leave a lasting legacy for the future. We continue to work to deliver the 4P’s of our strategy: Raise the Profile of the sector; Influence Policy that effects our sector; Enhance the Professionalism of our member’s businesses; and Develop People to protect the much needed bakery skills in our sector. We continue to build our training capacity and capability and have recently been awarded contracts to support Apprenticeship Training within the Scottish Dairy Industry and in partnership with the Flour Confectioners & Bakers Association to establish a new Work Based Learning Bakery Apprenticeship programme in the Republic of Ireland. We have invested in developing our new online James Allan Bakery Academy, which we will be showcasing at the conference. We continue to offer our Employment law helpline through Lindsays solicitors and our food legislation & food safety telephone helpline, provided by FoodChain ID Europe, both of these services are going from strength to strength. We would like to encourage you to support the people that support us. Without them we could not run the Scottish Baker of the Year Awards or put on a weekend event of this quality.
