The treatment at the time was fresh air, rest, and nutritious food. In 1898 the State Sanatorium opened, the first state operated hospital for the treatment of TB in the country. This hospital was located at the exact geographical center of Massachusetts. A Veteran’s Hospital opened in 1922, and the Jewish Sanatorium and several private homes also provided care. Most are no longer in existence. Rutland is a Right to Farm bedroom community supported by a local service base. ❦ s Ea The General Rufus Putnam house was the home of Putnam from 1781 to 1787 when he left to open the Northwest Territory and founded Marietta, Ohio. It is on the National Register of Historic Places and is now privately owned as a bed and breakfast. The Central Massachusetts Railroad ran through Rutland from 1887 to 1938. The line is now the Mass Central Rail Trail. Once primarily a farming community, Rutland was also known as a summer resort when the hotel known as the Muschopauge House was in existence from 1883 to 1929. The Community Hall now sits on this site. LEOMINSTER Enjoy Rutland and the Route 122 Scenic Byway P Welcome to Rutland, home of the lost village of West Rutland. The village of West Rutland was once a thriving community of homes, stores, a school, post office, railroad station, and mills including grist, saw, shingle, and textile. The area to the northwest was the site of a state prison farm and tuberculosis hospital for prisoners from 1903 to 1934. Long Pond was surrounded by many summer cottages. The West Rutland Cemetery is the last existing remnant of the lost village. During the Revolutionary War, a Continental Barracks was erected at the intersection of Charnock Hill and Barrack Hill Roads to house British and German prisoners of war. It served as a prison from 1777 to 1783. • Town wide Yard Sale ~ July 4th Committee 13 v 16. 17. 18. 19. 20. 21. APRIL Ri 10. 11. 12. 13. 14. 15.
