THE FACULTY OF DENTISTRY
UNIVERSITY OF MALAYA
FOREWORD
The Faculty of Dentistry was established in 1971. This first local dental school
undertook the role of training students in Dentistry and later in the various specialties, a
function that was then fulfilled by overseas universities. Graduates of the Faculty have
become successful practitioners in the private sector or senior specialists and
administrators in the government services as well as respected academicians. Others are
involved in the dental industry and have become successful entrepreneurs.
The Faculty received recognition for its high standard of teaching, research and
professionalism when the General Dental Council of the United Kingdom gave its
recognition to the University’s Bachelor of Dental Surgery degree in December 1997.
The first postgraduate programme, the Master of Community Dentistry was introduced
in 1994. This was followed by the Master of Dental Science in 1996, Master of Clinical
Dentistry in 1999, Master of Orthodontics and Master of Dental Surgery in 2000 and
Master of Public Health (Oral Health) and Master of Science (Public Dental Health) in
2004. The postgraduate courses cover a range of disciplines and are conducted through
coursework, clinical coursework or research. A postgraduate curriculum review exercise
is currently underway for all coursework program.
The Dental Faculty was recognized by the Royal College of Surgeons of England
[RCS(Eng)] as a training centre for fellowship in Dental Surgery in 1989. The Part I
examination was conducted in the faculty in 1993 and the final FDSRCS (Eng)
examination in the following year. Subsequent to restructuring of training in United
Kingdom, in the year 2000, the Dental Faculty was also recognized as a training hospital
that fulfills the clinical prerequisites for the Membership of the Faculty of Dentistry
(MFDS) Examinations. The part A and B examination of MFDS have been conducted
here since 2001. The feasibility to sit for the FDSRCS and MFDS (England)
examination locally had a positive effect on the number of dental specialists in the
country. It is indeed a privilege for the UM Dental Faculty to be recognized as one of the
few ‘overseas’ training and examination centres by RCS (Eng).
The Master of Orthodontics has been recognized by The Hospital Recognition
Committee, The Royal College of Surgeons of England and The Royal College of
Surgeons of Edinburgh as a Training Centre in Orthodontics since 2001. Three
specialties in the Master of Clinical Dentistry programme namely Periodontology,
Restorative Dentistry in Conservative Dentistry and Restorative Dentistry in Prosthetic
Dentistry offered by the Faculty has also been accepted as a ‘training’ sufficient as a prerequisite to do the Membership Exam in Restorative Dentistry of the Royal College of
Surgeons (RCS) (UK).
The postgraduate courses conducted by the Faculty are getting more in demand and
International students come from many parts of the world.
The Faculty warmly welcomes you to be a part of this pursuit of academic and
professional excellence.

Synopsis of Course Contents
This specialty training in oral and maxillofacial surgery involves
theoretical and clinical instructions of the science and art of the
specialty. The training emphasises on enhancing clinical acumen
and surgical skill in management of patient with oral and maxillofacial
health problems. Instructions on basic surgical skills were carried out
by practical simulation training prior to performing on patients. The
trainee will carry out management of patients in the clinic, ward and
at accident and emergency unit and perform advanced oral and
maxillofacial surgical procedures. The trainee will be posted to five
different medical disciplines to provide adequate exposure in the
surgical patients care. A one year posting at recognised local or
overseas maxillofacial surgery centres aims to provide wide
exposure to various clinical cases encountered. Training is also
aimed to provide adequate knowledge and experience in designing
and conducting a research project to demonstrate the application of
scientific method to a problem relevant to oral and maxillofacial
surgery.
