In the Review we’re able to address issues of importance to everyone in the
bioscience and medical technology sectors, exploring the projects and products
undertaken by key organisations.
Structure & Management 7
The Review has two main functions: it firstly helps readers to understand this
growing and diverse sector from varying perspectives; and secondly, it provides a
platform for organisations within Wales to promote their innovations and
collaborations.

Continued Growth
Since the last Annual Review, MediWales has
maintained sound and continual growth. This
is largely due to a concerted step-up in the
quality and consistency of our seminars: the
time spent developing relationships with our
sector-leading speakers has strengthened
our position as the main point of contact for
the sector.
MediWales gained a new member of staff last
September. This increase in man-power has
enabled us to dedicate more time to our core
activities; a push that is reflected in the positive
responses from our members and the wider
sector: the number of delegates attending our
events has almost doubled from 252 to 438 and
membership has significantly increased from 92
to 115 members.
These statistics reflect the improved platform
MediWales has developed to represent the
interests of our members. Our growth is also
highlighted by our continued engagement with
Welsh Assembly Government: the Chief Medical
Officer was a guest speaker at our 2008
Innovation Awards dinner; Jennifer Frost, Deputy
Chief Scientific Advisor is now an observer on our
board of directors; and our latest event discussing issues on clinical access - received
strong support and participation from key Welsh
Assembly Government figures.
Although our links with government have
continued to improve, MediWales continues to
mature as a commercial enterprise, thus
lessening its dependence on government funds.
MediWales now earns more than half its own
income, being grant-aided to no more than 38% of
its costs. This position encourages us to maintain
commercial awareness, which is reflected in the
significant increase in sector support contracts
completed.
A concomitant result of this independence is the
incurred knowledge from research and
collaborative engagements with independent
consultants and specialists. These new and
existing relationships work as a strategic tool in
gaining access to wider groups and networks that
are important to the Welsh sector. Our close
association with International Business Wales and
our conviction that international trade represents
the future of the sector in Wales, has led to
collaboration on two USA and Arab States trade
events. Similarly, research with BERR (UK
department for Business Enterprise and
Regulatory Reform) has demonstrated the
importance of international markets - especially
the US market - to companies in our sector; a
theme which runs through our latest issue of the
Medilink UK Review.
The Medilink UK Review was launched last year.
This biannual publication provides a national voice
for the medical technology and bioscience
sectors. The Review discusses current issues,
detailing information about projects and products
underway throughout this diverse and active
sector. The editorial panel is comprised of senior
managers from every one of the UK’s regional
medical technology networks. With an audience
of 10,000, we hope this publication will become
the definitive publication for show-casing medical
technology advancements across the UK, whilst
discussing sector needs from an industry
perspective.
Our increase in staff and clearer objectives has
helped us meet and largely exceed our targets
laid out in the 08-9 business plan. Now preparing
for the year ahead, we have identified three key
objectives that we wish to pursue:
Firstly the issue of market access, both in the UK
and internationally, is a topic that has been clearly
voiced as a priority by our members and directors.
annual review and directory 2009
5
In light of this, activity that was initiated by our
clinical access event in March will be followed up
throughout the year. Through dedicated
publications on this issue and on-going
engagement with key players, we aim to bridge
the gap between clinicians and academics with
manufacturers looking to have their products
evaluated or trialled. A subsidiary result of the
clinical access initiative has been a significantly
improved level of contact with clinical experts.
These valuable connections will be captured
within an improved database, reflecting our
mantra to improve NHS, academic and industry
contact.
As always, we have a promising events
calendar, giving a platform for issues such as
community healthcare; responding to the
current economic situation with a dedicated
event on funding and finance; an event
exploring clinical trials operations in Wales; and
the ever popular ‘Members’ Showcase’. We
expect participation and publicity for our 09
Innovation Awards to increase following from
the success of 08. And we’d like to congratulate
one of our Welsh members - Home Telehealth
Ltd – who went on to win the national UK
Awards in the same category of ‘Collaboration
with the NHS’.
Secondly, we aim to highlight the sector’s
successes and financial worth in order to raise
bioscience recognition. This objective is largely
being achieved through the sector mapping
project we are currently completing on behalf of
the Welsh Assembly Government’s Department of
Economy and Transport. This project is the most
thorough bioscience mapping exercise ever
undertaken in Wales and will largely be used to
guide policy; make a case for greater sector
support; and demonstrate the true size and
significance of bioscience in Wales. At a wider
level, BERR is currently engaged in mapping the
entire UK life science sectors; a body of work
which is well overdue and integral in developing
the importance of the sector to the UK economy.
Our third objective is to maintain a high level of
communication and engagement with the sector.
MediWales is the only forum in Wales dedicated to
the bioscience and med tech sector. In light of
this, we are committed to developing our role as
point of contact and source of market intelligence
for the sector. While lobbying the needs of our
members will be a priority, we will also continue
to produce the MediWales Reviews, mainly
designed to promote the Welsh sector, while also
developing the Medilink UK Review.
In addition to our core events, we have already
assisted the Welsh Assembly Government in
delivering the New Technologies in Healthcare
conference in May and we have worked with
International Business Wales to produce two
events to encourage trade with China and East
Asia. And of course, we hope to be involved in
BioWales 2010 - Wales’s largest med tech
conference.
MediWales would like to take this opportunity to
welcome our 24 new members; our new
Director Paul Michael from GE; and our new
Observer Owen Crawley, Chief Scientific Adviser
(Health), Welsh Assembly Government: we look
forward to working with you all.

Events Preview
MediWales events for the coming year are
already being discussed and developed with
our directors in light of our members’
feedback.
MediWales Innovation Awards Dinner 2009
Our annual Awards dinner has over the last four
years grown to become MediWales’s feature
event of the year. Application forms for the 2009
Awards will go out at the end of August, with
judging being made in early October. As always,
winners will then automatically be entered for
the Medilink UK National Health Technology
Awards – where in 2008, MediWales member
Home Telehealth Ltd won the award for best
collaboration with the NHS.
MediWales Joint Events
Increasingly, MediWales will be working to
develop shared events with regular collaborating
organisations, such as International Business
Wales and The Welsh Wound Network; new
ventures are underway with organisations such
as the Health Technologies KTN. Similar to last
year, MediWales will again be largely involved in
the organisation, promotion and presentation of
BioWales 2010, a fundamental conference and
biopartnering event for the Welsh bioscience
and health technology sectors.
MediWales Core Seminars
Each of our forthcoming MediWales seminars
addresses a topic of fundamental concern to
the medical technology sector. Feedback from
our own members and from the regional and
national networks that we work with have
shaped both the content and character of these
seminars.
Future Trends:
Opportunities in Community Healthcare
Community healthcare such as Telecare and
Telehealth is providing a growing number of
people with primary care within their own
homes. This event will discuss this shift in
healthcare delivery, detailing technological
advances in this area, whilst exploring how
companies in the sector are adapting to this
new area of technology.
Funding and Finance: a response to the
current economic situation
Presentations from corporate finance
companies, business and economic advisors,
and public sector funding bodies will give
advice on how SMEs and larger companies can
get funding and finance in this current
economic climate.
Clinical Trials Operations in Wales (ongoing)
Building on from the event in March,
MediWales is aiming to develop a clinical trials
and product evaluations route map. This map
will hopefully give companies in Wales a
clearer idea of how to access clinical expertise.
Working groups are being established in order
to ease communications between clinicians,
academics and manufacturers to make the
overall process more efficient.
Members’ Showcase
This annual event gives MediWales’s member
companies an opportunity to promote their
products and services to each other.

Calon Cardio-Technology Ltd (CCTL) is developing the next generation of
implantable micro blood pump for the treatment of heart failure.
Current pumps have clinically proven that heart assist pumps are a safe and
effective. However, these devices have failed to exploit their market potential for
two reasons: Current products are too large requiring highly invasive surgery
and they are expensive.

The Haemair mission is to produce respiratory aids that range from devices
that support respiration for patients with deficient lungs via an easily reversible
fully external device to a prosthetic device that may replace human lungs. The
basis of the device is a blood/air mass exchanger. This exchanger takes carbon
dioxide from the blood and transfers oxygen into the blood. It is compact,
portable and suitable for conscious, active patients.
The devices are aimed at both acute and chronic lung conditions. Unlike most
conventional treatments for lung deficiency, the devices do NOT use the lungs;
thus they allow deficient lungs to rest and recover, rather than forcing
damaged lungs to work harder through mechanically supported breathing.
Ultimately our patients should be allowed home.
