Ritual killer confesses

The series of unsolved ritual killings that has
allegedly been taking place in the villages
between the Giyani and Makhado municipalities since 2002 came to light this week when
one of the suspects confessed.
This comes after two victims, Thokozile
Maswanganyi (25) and Muvhango Vhavari
(30), were allegedly butchered and had their
private parts and intestines removed for ritual
purposes at Nkuri village near Giyani.
According to a close relative who did not
wish to be named, on the day he met his fate,
Muvhango Vhavari went out with his
half-brother, Lodrich Vhavari (22), in celebration of Christmas Eve. Unknowing that his
half-brother was up to something, he later
called his girlfriend, Thokozile, to join them.
Lodrich apparently then lured the couple into
a trap where his gang was waiting. They
allegedly murdered the couple and hid their
bodies in the bushes. However, after three days
of persuasion on the whereabouts of his
half-brother, Lodrich finally revealed who was
behind the series of ritual killings taking place
in the villages between Giyani and Makhado.
This led to the arrest of the alleged Kingpin,
Elias Mudau (53), along with Patrick Ngoveni
(26) and Jeffrey Mtileni (32) who later appeared
in Giyani Magistrate’s Court. Mudau is alleged
to be the middleman who recruits and pays
youngster to do ritual killings.
Meanwhile the community in the affected
villages, along with the provincial ANCYL,
organised a march to the offices of Giyani
Municipality where they waited for the arrival

Magadzi, to receive their memorandum of
complaints on the handling of ritual killing
cases at Giyani police station and magistrate
offices.
Amongst the demands in the memorandum
is the re-opening of all cases of ritual killings
that were dropped because of lack of evidence,
and a follow-up on all suspected ritual killing
cases that are currently under consideration.
Commenting on the allegation that some
police officers might be involved in the ritual
killings, the ANCYL Provincial Secretary,
Goodman Mtileni, said any police officer who
is found guilty of taking bribes should be fired
since they are earning enough money. "Our
government has just approved increment of
salaries on every public servant, including the
police - so there is no reason why anyone
should not be content with what they're
earning," he said.
Accepting the memorandum, the MEC said
she would respond as soon as possible. "Some
of the questions that cannot be answered in
seven days will be answered later - but we will
make sure that we come back to you with
whatever we managed to answer within the
timeframe that you gave us," she said.
She also revealed that the case has been
handed over to skilled investigators so that it
would not vanish or gone unsolved as has
been alleged about other cases. All the suspects remain behind bars, and the case has
been postponed to January 11 for bail application.

Senyolo's expulsion
followed the Greater
Letaba council’s special sitting in Modjadjiskloof in December.
According to ANC
Regional Secretary,

Senyolo was dismissed after he was
found guilty of misconduct, and that he
was allegedly working underground for
the opposition party,
Cope.
"In fact, the decision
to
expel
Senyolo was taken by
the ANC PEC and we
just had to implement
it," Manzini said.
Manzini further indicated that Senyolo
had failed to attend
regular council meetings ever since he had
led a protest march
against the ANC and
has ignored warnings
by the party leadership. It is alleged that
Senyolo's unhealthy
relationship with the
ANC started in 2008
after he mobilised
members of the ANC
from
several
branches to march to
the party's regional
office in Tzaneen.
They were complaining about party
leaders who they said
were bias toward certain members during
nominations for candidates to the provincial and national conferences, ahead of
last year's elections.Senyolo and a
group of about 17
people were arrested
but their case was
later withdrawn in
the Tzaneen Magistrate’s Court as there
were no witnesses.
However, Manzini
said the party has not
yet
decided
on
Senyolo's replacement, but said there
will be no by-election
on this matter as he
was only a proportional representation
councillor.He further
issued a strong warning to other councillors in the region that
the ANC would not
hesitate to take a
tough stance against
them should they fail
to take instruction
from the party that
deployed them in
government.

Haenertsburg holding cells on Christmas
day, are back behind
bars.
According to Superintendent Mohale
Ramatseba, spokesperson for the Haenertsburg police, the
prisoners were apprehended in Haenertsburg after escaping at
around 17:00 on
Christmas day.
Ramatseba
explained that the bars
in the cells where the
men were being held
were sawed through.
It is however not clear
what instrument was
used.

Missing contractor makes life difficult
Life is tough for a 60 year old man who has
been living in squalid conditions after an RDP
housing contractor disappeared before he
could build 43 houses for the poor at Moloko
village more than five years ago.
Patrick Lebapale said he has been living a
difficult life ever since the directors of Selolo
Construction Company vanished before they
could even start building the houses.
He said him and his wife, Florah, and their
six children had been crowded in a small hut
until she (his wife) died in 2007.
"Then her parents forcefully took away my
children to GaPhaphadi village because they
say I am too poor to support them," he said.
Lebapale said local people do not care
about him because he lives in dire poverty.
He indicated that he sometimes spent days
without something to eat as he is not yet
qualified to receive a social grant.
Lebapale further explained that even some
of his six children who are currently working
do not visit or help him to make ends meet.
Lebapale was amongst a group of hundred
families who received food parcels from the
South African Social Security Agency (SASSA)
as part of social relief of distress.
SASSA’s Provincial General Manager, Matshidiso Mamabolo, said the agency is committed to the provision of temporary relief to
very poor people, who sometimes go to bed
without something to eat.
"We appeal to poor people who might need
assistance from the South African Social Security Agency to work together with the Community Development Workers for them to
receive temporary relief," Mamabolo said.
Meanwhile, Ward 9 councillor, Masilo
Maloko, said he will hold discussions with
local business people so that Lebapale can be
provided with an emergency house.

Malaria cases on the increase in Mopani
THE Limpopo Department of Health
and Social Development has noted with
concern an increase
in malaria cases in
the Vhembe and
Mopani
districts
over the festive season.
So far, more than
80 patients have
been treated at various hospitals and
clinics after they
complained of having malaria.
A total of 10 patients were treated at
the Donald Fraser
hospital, and nine at
Tshilidzini and four
at Malamulele hospitals over the Christmas weekend.In Mopani, approximately
36 cases have been
reported east of Giyani and 22 in the
Ba-Phalaborwa area
over the past week
alone.

One of the managers spoken to explained that this is
not quite as positive
as it seems though.
More people were
buying more things
but the prices of especially basic food
were that much
lower than in the previous year, that figures didn’t show
much improvement.
In general though
this seems a positive
sign that the effects of
the global recession
are perhaps beginning to wane.
She would like to

The stork was very
picky about its deliveries this year.
No Christmas or
New Year babies

Medi-Clinic this season, and only four
Christmas babies and
one New Year baby at
Van Velden Hospital.

This after an astonishing 300 babies delivered during the
month of December.

World Cup Organising Committee South
Africa, Danny Jordaan, has welcomed 2010 as
a year which represents one of the greatest and
grandest nation-building initiatives ever undertaken since the death of apartheid.
Jordaan said the 2010 FIFA World Cup will
leave a substantial economic and tourism
legacy for the host country with this
once-in-a-lifetime marketing opportunity expected to make South Africa a more widely
known and understood tourism destination.
"This is the year when, as a nation, we will
open our doors, hearts and sporting spirits to
the world. This is our time. This is our year,"
Jordaan said.
Jordaan paid tribute to the teams, players
and officials who will participate in this large
sporting event.
"The world’s best players will be here.
Besides leading Argentina and winning the
2009 FIFA World Player of the Year award,
Lionel Messi has impressed his club, Barcelona.
This 5-foot-6-inch forward can take on two
or three defenders at a time and could turn a
few heads (and ankles) come World Cup time.
And he and the other 10 best football players
in the world will be on one stage here," said
Jordan.
The FIFPro and FIFA World X1 players who
will be here representing their countries in-
clude Iker Casillas (Real Madrid and Spain),
Nemanja Vidic (Manchester United and Serbia), Daniel Alves (Barcelona and Brazil), John
Terry (Chelsea and England), Patrice Evra
(Manchester United and France), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool and England), Xavi and Andrés
Iniesta (both Barcelona and Spain), Cristiano
Ronaldo (Real Madrid and Portugal) and
Fernando Torres (Liverpool and Spain).
"For these players and hundreds others,
South Africa will be their stage and the African
continent their theatre to display their technical skills. Let us not miss the opportunity to

said.
Jordaan said the successful hosting of the
2010 FIFA World Cup is the responsibility of
all South Africans.
He said following the successful staging of
the Confederations Cup and the FIFA Final
Draw, the world has now seen South Africa is
ready to stage the 2010 World Cup finals. Our
delivery of the events was top class.
"For five years, we have worked hard. The
true image of the next few months before the
kickoff is rosy. What is needed is greater public
enthusiasm for the event. All ten stadiums to
be used for World Cup matches have been
completed. Out of the 10 selected stadiums
only five were constructed from scratch. The
rest needed minor upgrades to meet some
technical requirements as per FIFA specific-
ations.
"Plans for other support infrastructures are
on track: roads, transport and support services
like security and safety, information communication and technology, and health services from various departments at national
level are being finalised.
"The South African government is upgrading
roads, airports and mass transit systems in
preparation for the event. A beefed-up
high-tech transport system of busses, trains
and taxis will be available South Africa-wide
to move the football faithful around.
"Our government and the construction industry are confident they can cope with the
massive amount of work required to finish the
refurbishment of roads, airports and other
infrastructural developments," he said.
Jordaan said South Africa has benefited and
will benefit economically from the World Cup
on home soil. The World Cup has created
hundreds of jobs. It has created a lot of
opportunities for many thousands of South
Africans.
"On the security front, we believe in a justice
system that can respond to the breaking of law
and order. The government is giving us strong
backing with regards to security measures and
we will have a safe and secure World Cup
tournament. The government is hiring an
additional 55 000 police officers, boosting the
force by 15 percent. I am satisfied that fans,
teams and the public will be safe during the
2010 World Cup finals.
"The challenge now is to mobilise the nation
- the country needs each and every South
African in their workplaces and their communities to stand up and decide what they are
doing to welcome the world in 2010. Every
South African must ask himself or herself:
What am I doing to be a good host of the FIFA
2010 World Cup.
"Over 15 000 volunteers from 52 countries
will soon be selected and begin training to
help us deliver the games and host the multitudes of visitors. This is just one of the many
ways that the nations of the world will get
involved in this historic opportunity. What are
you doing to be a good host?
"From now until the end of the 2010 FIFA
World Cup, every South African must play
their part in ensuring we come together as one
nation to deliver the best FIFA World Cup
ever," Jordaan said.

we encourage young people to engage in this

participating next time we launch a mayoral

All the teams that win at local municipal
level will proceed to district level where the
stakes will be higher, with the fourth team
receiving R30 000 for having reached the final
stage, while the first team will walk away with
R100 000. The team that wins at district level
will then proceed to play in the newly established Premier's League at provincial
level.
