This has been another year with great achievements by our individual members and our affiliates. I would like to give a big thank you to all our SNSW affiliates for the effort they have put in conducting their competitions and the opportunities they provide for their members to participate in softball at all different age groups and levels. At the 2014 SNSW AGM Weekend delegates from all our Affiliates enjoyed two days of presentations, workshops and discussions. It was a rewarding weekend with much robust discussion, with many speakers showing their passion for the present and the future of the game in NSW. On the Saturday night affiliates attended the Rooty Hill RSL for the Annual Softball NSW Awards Dinner to celebrate achievements made by players, officials and administrators over the last twelve months. The 2014 Affiliate of the Year Award with high performance ratings in all areas of softball was a repeat of last year with a win again by Softball Macarthur. Newcastle Association was named Country Affiliate of the Year, showing growth in many areas. We would like to congratulate all the winners and finalists for their outstanding performances in 2013/14 and thank all affiliates for their continued support of the SNSW AGM weekend. The winners in all the categories were: Affiliate of the Year Macarthur Country Affiliate of the Year Newcastle Website AwardSouthern Districts SNSW Membership Award Cumberland-Nepean SNSW Development Award Campbelltown Also Softball NSW Service Awards were awarded to Jean Chapman and Craig Richardson from (Georges River), Loretta Watts (Penrith City) and Merrilyn O’Bryan (Far North Coast). This year has also seen the re-introduction of our regular President’s meetings. These are held 3 times a year and so far they have proven very successful with good information flowing between the President’s, on behalf of their affiliates, and SNSW. At the last AGM a number of changes to the Constitution, that were identified as part of the Line in the Sand report, were discussed. At the July Presidents meeting these changes were tabled, and these will be voted upon at a Special General Meeting during the AGM weekend. These changes will help bring our Constitution in line with the best practice as requested of all sports by the Australian Sports Commission. Every year, Softball NSW Championships draw together the best our sport has to offer in each age group. They showcase the skill, personal discipline and teamwork of many young people representing their affiliates. Thank you to all team officials, parents and supporters involved with the preparation of every team. Congratulations to all our State Championship winners. Andy Dodshon President - Softball NSW MAYOR’S MESSAGE Blacktown International Sportspark Sydney is proud to be the home of Softball NSW. Since the development of the NSW Softball Centre as a major playing and training venue for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, Blacktown City Council has been committed to maintaining Blacktown International Sportspark’s softball facilities as the finest in Australia. We were proud to play host to international teams from the USA, New Zealand and Japan for exhibition matches and training camps. National Championships, State League and school programs have ensured another action packed season of softball at the Sportspark. Blacktown City Council and Blacktown Venue Management will continue to work with Softball NSW to ensure the continued growth and development of the sport in New South Wales. Congratulations to all of the NSW softball players, coaches, officials, volunteers and staff from Softball NSW as we look forward to the relationship continuing to grow even stronger in the future. Councillor Stephen Bali Mayor of Blacktown City 7 8 GENERAL MANAGER REPORT It is my pleasure once again to report on the past 12 months of programs and operations within the Softball Community of NSW. The past 12 months has seen a greater focus on Affiliates and Clubs for without these we do not have a sport. Softball Australia, Softball NSW and the Australian Sports Commission have been pro active in developing and promoting programs to assist Affiliates and Clubs. was exceptional and highlighted the professionalism of this country when it comes to sport. It was a pleasure to host the team and we hope that this will happen again in the future. Events at the NSW Softball Centre cannot happen with out the assistance from the Blacktown Venue Management Team who ensure that the grounds are always presented in excellent condition and any events are promoted throughout the media and local communities. Thank you to Kevin Jones and his team who continue to support Softball. The State Government Legacy Funding for the Blacktown International Sportspark was cut 2 years ago but Blacktown City Council and the sports are continually fighting to have it reinstated to ensure that the financial burden does not impact on either the council or the sports. The ASC Club Health Check has been a great assessment tool for the grassroots to understand where they are at and what areas need some attention. It is great to see that over 70 Affiliates and Clubs in NSW have taken the time to do this and then commit to the Action Plans. Pathways for players, coaches and officials remain an important part of the sport and Softball NSW provide these for each of these areas and are looking for ways to further enhance these through various opportunities that arise. Softball Australia has designed a Club Online Portal that provides clubs with tools to assist with the everyday running of a club. Over 80 organisations in NSW have taken advantage of this resource. The success of our state teams can be attributed directly to all the hard work that is done by volunteer coaches from the grass roots to the elite level, players should be forever grateful for the time that is spent helping them reach their goals. The new ASC Sporting Schools Program started in Term 3 of this year and with the focus on local schools linking with local associations and clubs it is important Softball takes advantage of this program at the local level with the assistance of Softball NSW. The U15 Program is now entrenched into the pathways and SNSW are pleased to support this program sending 3 male and 3 female teams as well as umpires to the Australian Regional Championships. In addition to this in 2015 saw an U15 Country Camp held in Newcastle which will now be an annual event in July. Softball Community Coach continues to be a program with a good uptake from the majority of affiliates in NSW. This program can now be combined with the Level 1 Coaching Accreditation Course which arms the participants with not only the technical aspects of coaching but also the Game Sense Approach to coaching making it more fun for everybody. NSW has over 430 people who have completed this course over the past 3 years. Disability Programs continue to be an important part of increasing participation in our sport. Softball NSW has had over 1000 People with a Disability particpate in programs across the state over the past 12 months. Softball NSW received funding from the Office for Sport to deliver 2 programs in the metropolitan area in schools. Softball NSW remains committed to helping the clubs and affiliates to deliver Softball. The staff have had the pleasure of meeting with the committees and hope to be of greater assistance and continue the open communication. Softball NSW work hard to promote the sport in the schools and are involved in many programs throughout schools in NSW. Some of the programs we are involved in focus on the sustainability of Softball Programs and increasing the workforce in schools by upskilling senior students and teachers. In the past year 200 senior students upskilled and over 80 teachers accredited. The Blacktown International Sportspark is home to the best Softball facility in Australia and with that attracts many events each year and 2014/2015 was no differrent. In addition to the annual State Championships, State League and Winter League, NSW played hosts to the U19 Men’s Australian Champinship which was combined with the Australian U15 Boy’s Regional Championship in January, the Blacktown Junior International Challenge in March, the Academy Challenge in June and the SAL International Friendship series in July. But the highlight of the year for the venue was playing host to the Toyota Red Terriers, a Japanese Professional Women’s Team, for 10 days. This was the first time a Japanese Club Team had held their training camp in Australia and the feedback from the Japanese was very encouraging. During the camp the Australian Open and U19 Women’s Team played the Red Terriers in a Series together with a NSW Invitational Team. The standard of play that the Japanese Team showed 10 I would like to thank the Softball NSW Board for their support and the staff for their hard work and dedication. The most rewarding part of the job is seeing the volunteers have success in whatever they set out to achieve and to be able to work along side one of the most dedicated group of volunteers to deliver Softball. Thank you to all that have had involvement in our sport and continue to meet the challenges head on. Cathy Kerr General Manager Eleven Level 1 courses were held at affiliate level with 83 attendees gaining their scoring accreditation or reaccreditation. Most affiliates are now organising a Level 1 course during their season of softball or combining with other affiliates to do so and I am hopeful of an increase in the number of Level 1 scorers this year. DIRECTOR OF SCORING 2015 SNSW State Team Statisticians Diana Oakes Open Men Carolyn Buttsworth Open Women Sandra Palmer U23 Men Lis Hannelly U23 Women Maria Wakefield U19 Men Damaras Clarkson U19 Women Rhonda Schultz U17 Boys Michelle Cate U17 Girls Official Scorers Official scorers were supplied for the following championships and tournaments hosted by Softball NSW at Blacktown International Sportspark: Softball NSW Events: • 2014 Female and Male State League Games (Aug - Nov) • 2014 Open Women’s State Championships (August) • 2014 Open Men’s State Championships (August) Softball Australia Events: • 2015 Nox Bailey Shield (U19 Men) in January • 2015 SAL Down Under Series in February • 2015 International Friendship Series (June-July) These events have provided the opportunity to introduce many recently accredited Level 2 and Level 3 scorers to the highest level of competition and to the world of ‘official scoring’. From feedback, the experience has been worthwhile and our number of official scorers has increased considerably because of the camaraderie and support given to all scorers by our more experienced scorers, who provide valuable mentoring and monitoring. It is also pleasing to see a number of Level 1 scorers coming along to the events to practice their scoring in preparation for their Level 2 practical assessment. Scoring Courses and Accreditation (August 2014 - July 2015) NOAS Level 2 scoring accreditation was achieved by the following scorers: Jenny Currie, Sharon Ferguson, Karlie Hubbard (WWSA), Lyndsey Richardson, Sylvia Kohut, Karina Jensen (SSSA), Alicia George, Aiden Kelly, Maddie Lisle (ODSA), Melanie Clarke, Samantha Rainer (PCSA), Elizabeth Clarkson, Hazel Postill (HDSA), Karren Plain (Macarthur), Daniella Palma (SDSA) and Sharon Mannweiler (NDSA). Tracie Dunn (PCSA), Alex Hitchen (ODSA) and Peta Wakefield (SDSA) achieved NOAS Level 4 scoring accreditation. I would like to thank the SNSW Board and Office Staff, Michael Hannelly and the many volunteer scorers for their assistance given to me this year. Kaye Greggs Director of Scoring DIRECTOR OF UMPIRING It is my pleasure to present the Softball NSW Umpires Association Annual Report to SNSW and its members. The SNSWUA and our members are passionate about our role to support the delivery of softball in NSW by providing quality service to our sport, at all levels, from the grassroots to the international elite. Throughout 2015 NSW umpires have supported SNSW and have had great opportunities to participate and achieve great success at all levels. This report captures some of the highlights throughout this year, and it is outstanding that we can recognise individual and collective successes at this time. In November last year our Level 4 accreditation course at BIS attracted two attendees. A Level 3 course was held at Wagga Wagga in September with three scorers in attendance. Six Level 2 courses were conducted: Wagga Wagga, Orange, and four at SNSW (for Metropolitan affiliates) with a total of 20 attendees. 2015 marks the 50th Anniversary of the Softball NSW Umpires Association. Since 1965 umpires have provided committed service to softball at all levels, and while there are many things that have changed, our passion and commitment to serve Softball NSW remains as strong as ever. We are delighted to celebrate 50 years with a special event in November 2015. Scorers attending Level 2, 3 and 4 courses have two years, after their course, in which to sit their practical assessment. There are currently 13 scorers who have yet to sit their Level 2 practical assessment, many of whom will do so during State League games this year. I wish to extend my thanks and appreciation to all umpires who have supported Softball NSW and all the associations across our state. To the Association UICs, Coordinators and umpires who help manage events, you play a big role in supporting umpires each week and I greatly thank you for your ongoing dedication. 11 I also extend appreciation on behalf of all umpires to the SNSW Board and staff for their support and partnership to help promote umpiring across NSW. Our 2014 annual awards night recognised fantastic performance across many areas. Full citations can be found on our website www.nswumpires.softball.org.au. Umpires are seen in action almost every weekend across NSW. It is awesome to see umpires progress through the development programs and the umpire pathway, advancing from local association games to junior state championship, then to senior state championships, nationals and international events. We are very lucky in NSW to have additional competitions such as gala days, Winter League, State League and a myriad of visiting domestic and international teams that help provide our umpires with great experiences. Kyira Cox Andrew Rindfleish Umpire of the Year: Director`s Award for Services to Umpiring: Jesse Smith Encouragement Award: Mac Reith-Snare Individual Award for Umpire Development: Philip Wardley Affiliate Award: Orange District Softball Association The SNSW Umpires Association has important responsibilities and operates with a clear strategic focus as defined in ‘Our House’, the SNSWUA Strategic Plan. We are collectively implementing many, many initiatives for the benefit of our members, umpires at large and, in-turn, Softball NSW. It is fantastic to report that our umpires have accepted these initiatives and participated in them with great success. Looking ahead we will be focusing a great deal of effort, energy, time and resources on UMPIRE DEVELOPMENT. By strategically focusing on the development of umpires we hope to achieve many outcomes, including improvement of on-diamond skill and resultant service to softball, increased satisfaction and subsequent retention rates, improved umpire recruitment based on strong programs and more enjoyment and engagement across the board. For many years umpire development programs have been very strong for the levels managed within the state (Level 1-4). This will continue with great enthusiasm and, in addition, we are making strong commitments to the development of our senior umpires by implementing new programs for our national and international umpires, UICs, trainers, examiners and our Executive Members. My sincere thanks to the senior umpires who generously give their time to pay it forward and help the new and advancing umpires. Our Umpire Clinics and Academy programs have been as popular as ever for umpires focused on developing and advancing their accreditation. Congratulations to the candidates from all over NSW who have successfully achieved higher accreditation. We are passionately committed to assisting umpires of all levels to hone their skills and achieve their dreams. Special congratulations to Amanda Houison on her achievement of SAL Level 7 Accreditation. Amanda is only the 4th NSW umpire to achieve this honour in NSW. In November 2014 the SNSWUA launched a new merchandise range with six branded leisurewear clothing items. With the view to look professional both on and off the field, coupled with our umpires’ desire to feel part of the umpiring family, umpires have been purchasing our merchandise and they look amazing at events! 12 I am humbled to report that I, Scott Rindfleish, was awarded Life Membership of the SNSWUA at the 2014 SNSWUA AGM. National Championships Congratulations to the following umpires who represented NSW at 2015 National Championships: Andrew Rindfleish, Amanda Houison, David Crowe, Kyira Cox, Leanne Gearside, Jay Gibson, Ron Houison, Jesse Smith, James English, George Norrish, Andrew Compton, Robert McIntosh, Kristina Travers, Dylan Murdoch. To the member elected Board Directors of the SNSWUA for 2015, thank you for your relentless commitment to umpiring in NSW. The committee has determined that the association is not a reporting entity. The financial statements have been prepared on an accruals basis and are based on historic costs and do not take into account changing money values or, except where stated specifically, current valuations of non current assets. The following specific policies, which are consistent with prior periods unless stated otherwise, have been applied in the preparation of these statements. a Depreciation Non-current assets are depreciated or amortised at rates assessed to match the cost of each of the assets over their effective life. b Inventories Inventories are measured at the lower of cost and net realisable value. c Income Tax The Association is exempt from Income tax in accordance with Section 50-45 of the Income Tax Assessment Act of 1987 and Taxation Ruling TR 97-22. d Auditors Remuneration For Auditing services $4,440 (2015 $6146) e Property, Plant and Equipment (PPE) Leasehold imperovements and office equipment are carried at cost less, applicable any accumulated depreciation. The depreciable amount of PPE is depreciated over the useful lives of the assets commencing from the time the asset is held ready for use. Leasehold improvements are amortised over the shorter of either the unexpired period of the lease or the estimated useful lives of the improvements. f Impairment of Assets At the end of each reporting period, the committee reviews the carrying amounts of tangible and intangible assets to determine whether there is any indication that those assets have been impaIred. If such an indication exists, an impairment test is carried out on the asset by comparing the recoverable amount of the asset, being the higher of the asset's fair value less costs to sell and value in use, to the assets carrying amount. Any excess of the asset's carrying amount over its recoverable amount is recognised in the income and expenditure statement. 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 ARMIDALE The 2014 – 2015 Summer Softball Season has been a great one for our Tee ball and Mob ballers. We were able to split the Tee ballers into two groups (4-7 and 8-11) and field 2 teams from each group, on most weeks. Our Seniors comp started out with 2 teams, but due to injuries and numbers dropping we had to turn it in to a mixed comp. Soon numbers dropped in that too and we had to cancel the Seniors Comp all together unfortunately. We engaged in a Sponsorship drive pre-season, and were lucky enough to have Baker’s Delight come on as, we like to call them, our major sponsor, and also Donut King and Armidale Bowling Club, with Baker’s and DK supplying goods at every game free of charge, for us to sell in the canteen. We look forward to their continued support in the 2015/2016 Summer Season. I would just like to make special mention of Amie & Ryan from Baker’s Delight and say thank you to them for their help and guidance to me with suggestions and ideas. We had many new Tee ballers who enjoyed the new skills and friendships they developed over the season. I am confident that this will encourage these players to return for the next season. It is hoped that if we can increase the numbers again next season that we can split the Tee Ballers again in to the two groups. Our Modballers have improved their skills immensely over the season, whilst having lots of fun at the same time. It can be harder some times for the more experienced players to be patient with our first timers, but all of the payers have done so well this season. We have great plans for our next season. We are in the process of signing a new lease with Council to take over one of the fields at Moran Oval. In doing this we hope that through engaging more sponsors, we will be able to develop the ground in to a proper playing diamond and make it the official ground for Softball Armidale. However, this will need all the assistance we can get from our families to help us get that off the ground, so please, join the Committee and help us build Softball in Armidale again. It is a great team sport and the kids get so much enjoyment out of it. At this point, I would like to thank my fellow committee members for their time assistance and knowledge which has helped make softball available to our community each week. But, we got through the season, just, so thank you to each of you for your valuable time and efforts throughout the season as the kids wouldn’t be able to play without your assistance. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of those who didn’t hold an official committee position, but helped out wherever possible. To the scorers and canteen helpers especially, thank you for your help also. A very exciting time lies ahead with much growth and development for Softball Armidale Inc and we hope that you all come back next season! Amy Kleindienst President 28 CAMDEN HAVEN/PORT MACQUARIE We have maintained 7 teams again which is great ,including many new faces across the teams. Fantastic weather overall with only losing one round to rain. (I didn’t feel so bad calling ours off when even the State Touch carnival had to be abandoned on the Sunday ) Our players continue to travel from far and wide, which is a credit to the calibre of players in our small but social competition. Thankyou to the Forster, Tamworth and Kempsey for your continued support. Our umpiring ranks have improved with the recent upgrading of our Umpires to level 1. Thankyou to Shei and Ash for assisting and joining Trevor, Ron and myself on more regular basis. Thankyou must also go to our teams for fulfilling allocations as required,It makes our job a lot smoother. Injuries on the field this year have been kept to a minimum which is fantastic . A lowlight this year was the abandonment of the “Batter Up” program, we were short on time, volunteers and participants . Mainly due to the recent reforming of Hastings Baseball. This is not a bad thing there are still kids on the park being exposed to the skills and the games that we all love. Financially we are in a good position with no major expense outlays this yr . The nets are something that we need to look at focusing on in the future at this stage. Thankyou to all committee members Rowena,Trevor,Mandy and Christine and general members for your attendance and contributions over the last season. Lea Smith President CAMPBELLTOWN RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY and RESILIENCE has been the corner stones of us successfully conquering the challenges over the past twelve months. Needless to say our passion to succeed and to make SOFTBALL an enjoyable sport for families is second to none. In 2014 – 2015 season we experienced a 10% growth in the number of teams to take the diamonds. We welcomed into our family REDSOX and DOLPHINS. There has been a significant increase in the number of volunteers to support Softball Campbelltown. It was a privilege to not only see, but hear delegates, club representatives and parents demonstrating that our mission was the future and not the issues of the past. The enthusiasm by members to present ideas and strategies to enhance our playing programs, canteen functionality, maintenance programs, financial management, development and overall governance has been very motivating and refreshing. Thank You members. I would like to thank the Softball Campbelltown board for their exceptional governance and support. Whilst there were times of varied opinions the focus remained “what is best for Softball”. I would like to extend a personal thank you to Braydan Schouten ( First GEN Y board member). This project has proven, to be, not only successful for the association, but created opportunities for other GEN Y’s to join the future governance structure of Softball Campbelltown. Strategic Achievements. We Have: *Secured an infrastructure grant for $28,000 *Built an awning adjacent to Hilda Cottage *Successfully achieved our biggest goal “Custodianship of the Lee Ruddy Softball Complex ( Milton Park) Congratulations Softball Campbelltown ! Vision for the future *Enhance our coaching education *Implement an umpire development program *Build a relationship with other sport/associations to improve the sport of SOFTBALL across the community. Selwyn Williams President CENTRAL COAST The year could not have started on a higher note with the Over 35’s attending the State Championship in June. After remaining undefeated for the weekend, we meet North Shore in the final. We certainly had our batting game on by then and lead 6 – Nil at the top of the third. Unfortunately the heavens opened and the game was abandoned. Although we share the title of State Champions, I have no hesitation in saying that with a 6 nil lead we would have been hard to beat….! Getting back to work, the Committee set themselves some major goals for the season being: Consolidate our financial stability Recruitment and retention of junior players Reinvigoration of the junior representative program Financial Stability The financial stability of CCSA has further been consolidated this season. The inclusion of fiscal measures in our regulations will assist with financial risk management. This final stages to ensure our financial stages are now being explored and implemented. A proposed budget for the upcoming season will now be presented at the AGM and we are in the process of developing a five year plan to ensure we remain financially viable while meeting equipment and facility maintenance and improvements. The final element we are exploring is the use of a book-keeping service to undertake monthly accounting and annual auditing. This will improve financial transparency and reporting to the membership. The canteen has been an excellent source of revenue for the last two seasons and is the leading factor in our current financial stability. As we cannot guarantee similar returns in the future, our financial planning process has excluded canteen profits from our budget development. This ensures CCSA maintains a stable financial footing while being able to reinvest any additional canteen income into official’s development and representative programs or improving the timeframes of the five year plan. Recruitment and Retention Softball is a sport in decline. Nationally over the last 10 years, we have lost 56% of our membership. Central Coast numbers have also been in steady decline. We have come from over 1000 members to just over 400 members this season. Although we had a small decline again this season, what is encouraging is the growth of our junior teams. They are the future of the sport and where we need to focus our attention. TeeBall grew to 8 teams, Modball 5 teams and Youth 4 teams which was a sensational effort by all clubs. Our focus will be to maintain and grow these numbers next season. We are hoping to further develop the TeeBall grade by splitting into Under 8’s which will undertake a batter program all season and the Under 10’s which will be a standard TeeBall competition. This is as a direct result of valuable feedback from clubs and parents. 29 Feedback on the introduction of the Youth Pool has been positive in nature although there maybe opportunities to be more lenient with the grading of players to ensure that more grades benefit from the pool. We realise that more work needs to be done to develop opportunities for our Youth players, particularly the boys, including the reinvigoration of a Men’s competition. All feedback and suggestions are welcome and will be given extensive consideration. We are exploring the introduction of a ‘Bring-A-Friend’ Program where a small refund is given to every player who brings a new player to a junior team. There is still work to be done on this proposal and we continue to work with clubs to finalise a viable program. Representative Programs Our focus this season was one of recognition and reinvigoration. We launched the season with our player cap program where every Representative Player and Team Official will now be allocated a player number and presented with their cap in recognition of their contribution to Central Coast Softball. In recognition of all those that have given to the Coast in previous years the first 100 numbers were retired. We also acknowledges our life members who were allocated the first of the new caps. This year also saw the introduction of a new playing uniform for Representative teams. Thank you on all the feedback which was invaluable in determining the final design. Our Under 11’s were the first to roll out the new uniform which I feel is most appropriate given that they are our future! While the uniform does not make the team, I am sure that we will have much success in the coming years. Without stealing the Rep coordinators thunder, it was great to see so many junior’s trialling and training during the regular season and look forward to seeing a lot more red caps on Saturdays! Alison Curtis – As Vice President Ali has kept the wheels ticking, ensuring that we all stay on task. She has been a driving force behind the new Representative uniforms and was one of the dynamic duo that set the canteen on the road to success with a fresh approach! Steve Hanna – Our Canteen Stalwart! The success of the canteen can be attributed directly to his hard work. Arriving early and leaving late every week, mid-week shopping and slushy machines has been his weekly routine. Throw in coaching duties and the driving duties of a dad of a State player and Steve has been one very busy lad! Vanessa Lees – Over the years Vanessa has contributed to many aspects of the committee with the Treasurers role being the most recent. Her continued commitment to the representative program is to be commended as should her contributions to both her club and in her role as the pseudo grounds person! Janne Trigg – Triggy has been the stalwart of this committee and the CCSA registrar since… well forever! Janne has promised to always be available to provide assistance whenever and wherever it is needed. It has been a pleasure to work with each and every one of you. Where to Next? Before we know it, come and play days and club registrations will be well underway and the season proper will be here. While we will be setting ourselves some new goals our focus will also remain on recruitment and retention, particularly in our junior grades. As always our role will be to draw together all your ideas and coordinate the opportunity for a fantastic season of softball. Thank you for your support and I look forward to seeing on the diamond. Melinda Dagg President Special Mention There are many people who make the season a success. The CCSA Committee is the smallest of elements. Without the club coaches, scorers, umpires, administrators and players then there is no association. This season two teams made an outstanding contribution to softball by sacrificing their own expectations and competed in a grade higher than originally committed to. This sacrifice ensured that both the Division 1 and 2 competition were able to proceed as a regular competition. To each and every person involved in the Division 1 Wingers Team and the Division 2 Mingara Blue Team, you have my personal thanks on making those grades a success this year and congratulate you on displaying the spirit that epitomises the highest level of sportsmanship. Although there was trepidation from both sides on what the season would hold, you showed enormous determination to give it your best each week and your courage is to be congratulated. I would also like to thank the outgoing Committee Members for their contributions over the various years of service. 30 COFFS HARBOUR No Report Submitted CUMBERLAND NEPEAN The 2014/2015 season was a very successful one for both our club summer competition and for our representative teams with our U11 Girls team winning the State championship title over Manly, in a closely contested final. Of the 990 players/officials in 2013/2014 season, we had a total of 637 players return in the 2014/2015 season. A total of 353 players did not return for one reason or another. However, clubs we were able to recruit 241 new players to the game of softball, and 103 players returned after an absence, for a total of 981 players/officials in 2014/2015 season including . a new club, the Titans Softball Club. To work towards our target for a 5% increase in 2015/2016 season (or 50 new players), two Come and Try Days are already planned for July 2015. As indicated in last year’s annual report, CNSA was successful in receiving a grant through the NSW Department of Sport and Recreation for $27,500. CNSA has contributed an additional $25,000 towards improved irrigation, drainage and resurfacing of diamond 1, and fixing of wiring on all diamonds at Stanhope. Work has already been completed on the irrigation of the ground and the installation of a new water tank. All going well, all of this work will be completed in time for our new softball season. Previous Blacktown Council work already completed at International Peace Park (IPP) on diamonds 8, 9 and 10, proved a big success for our teams. With the news that netball will be moving from IPP over the next couple of seasons, further negotiations will need to take place with Blacktown Council for additional ground improvements, which meets the needs of softball. It was with great sadness that we lost our immediate past President of CNSA in Bill Morris. Bill’s enthusiasm to see the game of softball being played at all grades was obvious to everyone. He would spend much of his time on Saturday mornings watching the many children play, especially the junior boys. It was a passion of his to get the junior boys competition up and going. We will all miss seeing him around the diamonds. Rest in peace Bill Morris. CNSA once again held the David Swan President’s Cup for women, an inaugural President’s Cup for Men on a Friday night, the Cumberland Cup for representative teams competing in the U17 State Girls championships and a Gala Day for our tee ballers at IPP. One of our big successes continues to be our umpiring program. This year CNSA umpires have continued excelling on the diamond. This year was another year of firsts for our umpires: 4 umpires gained their first accreditation • • Some of our newer umpires attended their first tournament or Gala day 4 umpires attended their first State Championship • • 2 umpires went to their first National Championships This season we have had over 50 umpires umpire at CNSA. Our blues in training program continued to grow this year with over 14 new blues in training and many of our Blues in Training returning for a second year. What has been great to see is the number of families joining the program and learning together. This year we levelled 4 new level one umpires. It was also great to see a number of umpires from other associations at CNSA this year. A number of our umpires participate at State Championships and are appointed to tournaments throughout the year. Below are the achievements of those umpires who have attended State Championships, been awarded finals appointments or appointed to a championship. Andrew Bradshaw President DUBBO CITY The 2014/2015 Softball season saw a successful year for our game being played in Dubbo. The expansion of the competition into 2 levels of mixed, plus the ladies competition, was a good sign for an expanding club. Our registered playing numbers rose by 10% from the last year and it was the highest number of men, women and youngsters playing our game here in Dubbo. But, with the swelling of player numbers, our structures as an organisation were tested. An extra field was marked each week and the close proximity of the diamonds meant that on some weeks, play would overlap onto nearby games. Also our umpire stocks were low and this proved a challenge. This issue will be addressed as a priority for the 2015/2016 season. We have developed a better relationship with the Dubbo City Council. The Sports Council Meetings have been attended by Softball members and the communication between the 2 bodies has been good. My congratulations to the winners of all 3 Grand Finals: SWAT Blue - Open Mixed SWAT Green - Mixed Social Bank of Queensland White - Ladies All teams played with great enthusiasm and spirit, which pays well for the future of our game. My thanks to the committee. Amanda Burton - Vice President, Helen Beer - Secretary, Kirstene Medcalfe - Registrar, Angela Blackett - Finance, Andrew Gardiner - Media and Ben Hocking and our grounds staff who prepare the fields every week. Joe Wallace President 32 players in an attempt to increase their skills level and at the same time trying to develop a higher level for the other players to aspire to. Training was held once a month and the players enjoyed the opportunity to be pushed to their limits. FAR NORTH COAST Our junior membership continues to decline with only 18 players ranging from 12 to 16 years old, 17 players for Batter-Up and 6 in Lil Sluggers. We provided competitions for Open Mixed (5 teams), and Senior Women’s (13 teams). Highlights: • Congratulations to the Grand Final winners: Division 3 Women – Lismore Workers Wild Turkeys defeating Goonellabah Gunnas 13-12, Division 2 Women – Rous Warriors accounted for Woodburn Whippets 12-8 , Division 1 Women – Lismore Workers Condors defeated Dodgers Devils in an epic 8 runs to 7, Open Mixed – Lismore Workers Buzzards finished at the top of the competition table. • President’s Trophy – This year Clubs were invited to nominate the person/s they believed to be the driving force behind their Club. It was pleasing to see a number of nominations come in and seeing the same two names keep coming up and as both were worthy recipient Cheryl Nilon (Rous Hotel Softball Club) and Christine Costello (Blue Sistas Softball Club) where each presented with this award for their enormous efforts in running their clubs. • Shantarna and Talarra Berry were both award with the Junior Players Award for their dedication to softball and their achievements within the game. • Umpire-in-Chief’s Award – Geordi McDougal received this award for his continuous effort in turning up most weekends, umpiring a number of games each Saturday and improving his skills and knowledge throughout the season. • Local player Nick Shailes once again made the Australian Men’s team. Nick loves his softball and it’s really pleasing that he continues to excel in his chosen sport. Nick was named MVP of the World Championships 2015, in Canada, for the 4th consecutive year Umpiring - A big thank you must go out to our umpires that gave up their time again and again, so we could play softball. Nathan Pickup, Pat Leadbeatter, David Dunlop, Geordi McDougal and Shelia Keane all need to be recognised for their ongoing support to our sport. Thanks guys. Also, a big thank you to all the clubs that covered their duties during the season. I know it’s difficult when your team is put down to fill the gaps, but your efforts are greatly appreciated by the teams and the Executive. The start of the season saw Howard Watt, Jessie Smith and Jay Gibson run an umpiring clinic which was well received by all who attended. 30 members were in attendance and they all gained valuable information and enjoyed the presentation. Coaching - With the small number of juniors in our competition our Coaching Director, Kayleen Shailes and Junior Development Officer, Renee Blaikie found ways to engage our players with various forms of softball to play from 9 to 5-a-side softball and other formats which kept the juniors interested. It was decided to form a Development Squad for the stronger Selina Atkinson and Renee have been running coaching clinics outside of the Association in local schools, being involved with the Premier Sporting Challenge, running school gala days and helping Softball NSW out with their commitments at Banora Point and Lennox Head. Renee has been going to Larnook Primary School during after school care teaching softball & fitness through a community grant. Kayleen, Renee and Selina have all done an outstanding job to improve our players’ skills and promote softball in the area. Congratulations on a job well done. Scoring - Julie Carrall continues to offer her assistance to anyone interested in learning to score and is often seen sitting with club scorers helping them with the finer points of scoring. Every year Julie makes herself available to be the official scorer for all Grand Finals which is a great help to the umpire. Final Wrap Up - After a big media push on radio and local newspaper, which was well received by the general public, it was disappointing to see that it did not convert to players coming to our sport. However, the game must go on and we managed to arrange games for the juniors who were interested. With players wishing to have more game time, a carnival weekend was used to complete rounds in all senior divisions. It was just a shame we picked one of the hottest weekends in February. But we got through it and teams were sorted for the start of the final rounds. I cannot write this report without mentioning the grand final games. What a brilliant display of softball set by all teams competing. Two games were decided by 1 point while the Division 2 game went down to the last innings. It always at this time of the year I wish I had a movie camera. The Division 1 Grand Final between Lismore Workers Club and Met Dodgers was an action packed game. The game went into two tie breakers after seven innings and it really is a shame one team had to lose. If only we could get people down to watch these types of games, we would have players coming out of the woodworks. At this point I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to the running of the Association especially our Executive members. The time and effort these people put in behind the scenes combined with their work and family commitments is huge. Sometimes we do not give them enough credit for what they do, so I would like to give a big thank you to the outgoing Executive, your hard work has been greatly appreciated. Looking forward to 2015 – 16 we are already preparing for the Lismore Masters Games, we intend to run an Australia Day carnival for open women and at the same time offer an Under 17 Girls and Under 17 Boys carnival. We will continue to use radio and newspaper advertising as we believe we must keep putting our sport in front of the public. Here’s hoping to a bigger and better 2015-16 season Dianne McGowen President 33 GEORGES RIVER GRSA has continued to offer a range of competitions ranging from Babes (U8s) through to open competitions. Modifications to the timing of junior games in the Summer 2014 competition better facilitated those who wished to play in two age groups, which bolstered the strength of our U13 and U16 competitions. We enjoyed the third year of our Men’s A grade and A Reserve competition, drawing players and teams from across Western Sydney and abroad. GRSA has also continued to host the Independent Girls School Sports Association (IGSSA) on Saturday mornings during school term 1. In February-March 2015, GRSA offered a new slowpitch competition, which was free for those who had played in the Summer competition and had a reduced fee for new players. Four teams participated, enjoying the social atmosphere and the opportunity to try a new form of softball. I anticipate that this and similar competitions will be offered in the future. We were joined by two new teams in Winter 2015, the Bonnett Bay Frosty Beavers in Ladies and the Monkeys in Mixed. 2014-15 was also a year of growth for some established clubs, especially St Christopher’s Softball Club. In the Summer 2014 season, St Christopher’s took part in a Softball NSW initiative where they were granted three new kits due to a growth in T-Ball registrations. Development and recruitment GRSA has participated in a number of initiatives for development, recruitment and retention of members. We participated in the Get Active Bankstown Expo, attended by volunteers from GRSA and Cathy Kerr and Jody Nielsen from Softball NSW. I thank Ahmed Attia and Betty Nguyen for translating material into Arabic and Vietnamese for use at these events. GRSA has hosted a number of training events for players and officials. Charlie Whetu and the U15 Aussie Sparks hosted a training session with GRSA U13 players. A joint initiative between teams in the GRSA Men’s Competition and Softball Campbelltown provided a training opportunity for junior members at Campbelltown, and I anticipate future opportunities for GRSA members. I look forward to the ongoing development of GRSA and thank in advance all those who contribute to the Association in 2015-16. We continue to face challenges, particularly in retaining players and maintaining the strength of our junior competitions. We also continue to require volunteers for a variety of roles, and I encourage anyone who is willing to contribute, whether regularly, at tournaments or as a oneoff project to contact the Executive Committee. We have a strong core of volunteers at Association and Club levels, and the more help we receive from new volunteers, the more that GRSA will be able to grow and improve the standard of softball and services we provide to our members. James English Chairperson Representatives Four members of GRSA have represented Australia in 201415: Callum Beashel, Jayden Lach and Stuart Perry in the Aussie Colts (U19 Men’s), and James Brownlow in the Aussie Steelers (Open Men’s). Jayden was also a member of the Australian Open Men’s Squad. The following members represented NSW at the 2015 National Championships: U17 Men’s: Zachary Young, Chris Brownlow (A/coach), Amy Wadwell (A/coach) U19 Men’s: Callum Beashel (Vice Captain), Julie Rippon (Administrator) U19 Women’s: Rachael Zucchetti (A/coach) U23 Men’s: Billy Ismay, Stuart Perry, Chris Brownlow (Coach) U23 Women’s: Lis Hannelly (Statistician) Open Men’s: James Brownlow, Mitchell Brownlow, Nathan Dickinson, Lachlan Hay, Jayden Lach Mike Hannelly and Lis Hannelly also participated as official statisticians at National Championships. GRSA congratulates all of our representatives and look forward to their continued success. HAWKESBURY No Report Submitted 34 At the 2014 AGM, HDSA inducted two valued members as Life Members of the Association. Graeme Stewart deservingly received his Life Membership for his commitment and contribution to his club Epping Eastwood and Hornsby Softball over his tenure. Graeme was involved as a Club Delegate, Coach and Umpire at both a Club and Representative Level as well as a long-time member of the Rules Committee, a founding member of the USC, a Representative Coach and served time as a Vice President on the HDSA Board. HORNSBY DISTRICT Another season has flown by and it is with great pleasure I am able to again present the President’s report for the 2014/15 season. I would like to congratulate our Board and subcommittees for their tireless dedication to the Association to ensure we are the best that we can be. This season saw many highlights in both our local competition and our results at a Representative level across all age groups. We were thrilled to have the inclusion of Hornsby Wildcats as an affiliated club this season. I would like to congratulate Debbie Jehn and her committee for their hard work enabling them to field 4 and half teams this season with the majority of their players from non-softball backgrounds. I would also like to congratulate Adrian Rampoldi, Kathy Rowlison and Carolyn Hutchings for their efforts to restore Greenway’s Div 1 and A Grade teams. This season, the Association suffered an overall decrease in numbers. We had mixed results in our Teeball competitions with 6 teams in our Batter Up competition and 4 teams in our Teeball A competition. We hope to balance the inadequacies through changes to our rules which will allow for a clear distinction in our Teeball age groups. However, our strength in Teeball numbers last season, allowed for a great spread in our Modball divisions this season. We had 7 registered teams in Modball B from 4 clubs and 4 teams in Modball A. Again, we achieved mixed results from our school girl divisions. Unfortunately, we could not field a separate Div 2 competition and thus our Div 3 and Div 2 competitions were combined for this season. On the other hand, hard work from our clubs allowed us to field 4 teams in our Div 1 competition. Although we are still rebuilding, it is great to see we are on the right path. We hope the natural progression of our players will allow for 4 team competitions in each division next season. Our B Grade and C Grade competitions were consistent from last season with 4 teams in B Grade and 8 teams in C Grade. Our C Grade competition continued as an 8-team comp until the Final Series where teams were split into Grade and Reserve. Similarly to Div 1, we were able to field 4 teams in our A Grade competition with a hard fought and balanced season. Thank you to our clubs and their committees for their efforts in stringing together teams to restore our A Grade competition. We ended our 2014/15 season with another successful Grand Final Day. Congratulations to all participating teams and our award winners. In addition to the jumping castle and dunking machine, we held a Grand Final Raffle with the proceeds going towards our NSW Representative players, Ally Casey and Chloe Holman. I would also like to thank John ‘JB’ Black for commentating our A Grade final. Lisa Casey was also recognised for her tireless dedication to the Association. As a Board member, a Rep Team Manager and a mother to two Australian representative players, Lisa continues to support our Association and is a great example of what we stand for as an Association. Her love for softball and HDSA is something I admire and I am honoured to be able to work alongside her. This season I would like to thank all our volunteers – to Karen Kemp and her family for their hard work in the canteen, to Richard Gatt and his girls for their assistance each week in setting up diamonds, to Kylie Kellett for her initiative with our Rep uniforms, to Damaras Clarkson for organising the Association’s scorers, and to all our volunteers who work behind the scenes to make each season run as smoothly as possible. Each year, the Executive has a difficult decision on their hands in selecting the recipients of the Volunteer Awards. This year’s recipient of the Paul Wolf Trophy this season for Contribution to Hornsby Softball was Lauren Postill who has continued to represent Hornsby as a Club and Representative player, levelled umpire and coach to our junior rising stars. The recipients of the Peter & Heather James Volunteer Trophy for Contribution to Hornsby Softball for this season was Don & Judy Williams for their commitment to our Association through their efforts with the BBQ every Saturday and overall support. I would like to pass on my gratitude to Hornsby Shire Council for their cooperation, flexibility and support this season. I’d also like to thank Mr Geoff Wing, Principal at Pennant Hills High School, for again allowing us the use of their facilities. This allows our Rep teams to continue training regardless of the weather conditions. This season saw HDSA come very close to two NSW State Championship titles with our 2014 U15 and 2015 U17 Rep teams finishing Runners Up at their respective State Championships. I am proud of the strength our Association has in our Rep program considering the size of our Association. • 2014 U13 HDSA team – 6th at State Championships • 2014 U15 HDSA team – Runners Up at State Championships • 2014 U19 HDSA team – 6th at State Championships • 2014 Over 35 Women’s HDSA team – equal 7th at State Championships • 2014 Opens Women’s HDSA team – 7th at State Championships • 2015 U11 HDSA team – 8th at State Championships • 2015 U17 HDSA team – Runners Up at State Championships Congratulations to all involved in these teams. It is great to see such strong results at a Representative level as we continue to show NSW what we have to offer. At the conclusion of our 2014/15 season, we celebrated HDSA’s 20th Anniversary with a dinner at The Galston Club. It was a great opportunity to recognise our successes and for members, past and present, to catch up and share their stories. Thank you to The Galston 35 Club for their hospitality, Adam Dean for his entertainment and everyone who attended for making our 20th Anniversary a great night to remember. At the end of this season, we were sadden to have three long serving Executive members stand down from their positions. Gary Dorey has been the Association’s treasurer for the past four years. His excellent work ethic and tireless work behind the scene has allowed for the smooth running of our Association. He has been a valued member of the Executive Committee and will be missed as part of the team. Anne Marie Brownen has been a versatile member of our Association, this season taking on the Registrar’s role and previously as the Association’s Secretary for a number of years. Anne Marie’s passion has ensured the Association has structure and vision in all its operations. Adrian Rampoldi has been a fixed member of HDSA’s Executive since 2009 and has contributed to all facets of the Association, in particular to our Umpiring Program. His leadership and decision making skills have brought great success to the umpires of Hornsby and his hard work has been recognised with Life Membership of the Association. I look forward to continuing to seeing all three at the grounds next season. Thank you for your continued support this season and I look forward to what is in store for our 2015/16 season. Paige Hyslop President ILLAWARRA We continue to hold our head above the water in terms of player numbers for our mixed Fastpitch and Slowpitch competitions. Our competitions for Fastpitch and Slowpitch are played on Tuesday and Wednesday nights respectively through the daylight savings period. Our friends in Slowpitch have found their administrative feet forming a new subcommittee following the retirement of long term servants Kay Thompson and Robyn Peters. Our very small but dedicated committee and supporters maintain the passion to rebuild our numbers but are moving strategically to ensure we don’t bite off more than we can chew. The past two years have been dedicated to organic growth through player referrals and attracting players back from yesteryear through our growing Facebook following. This has also been supported through our return to full affiliation and participation in State Championships in the over 35 division. Our second initiative is the realisation of the construction of a purpose built diamond. Construction has been completed and we are awaiting handover from local Council subject to some administrative delays at their end. Once this has been established we hope to turn our attention back to reestablishing our junior participation as we realise that if you don’t have juniors coming through our senior competition will die off in time. In due course we will partner with Softball NSW and other associations for guidance and inspiration. Finally I wish to thank my fellow committee members, team managers, groundsmen and umpires for their commitment to providing an enjoyable competition for all. Terry Ellem President 36 the coaching staff as we try to maintain the high standard of softball that Macarthur produces. A challenge this season will be to try to increase our coaching staff and mentor the existing ones to keep progressing. MACARTHUR The Association grounds are located at Cowpasture Reserve Camden alongside the Nepean River and are a short stroll from Camden CBD. We provide 11 diamonds of which 3 are fully fenced, of the remaining diamonds 6 have back nets and 2 have portable back nets. The club house facilities consists of a canteen, first aid room, male, female and disabled toilets which can be hired out for a small fee. In addition we have 2 batting tunnels and Diamond 1 with lighting which can also be hired out day or night. We have had a successful year with our registrations and the feedback received indicates that the competition is of a high standard. The number of players on permission, particularly in our Men’s competition, supports this indication. The central venue registration days continues to be a huge success for our Association enabling the community to source out the most suitable club. Registrations continued throughout the year with our focus on retention of our players. Macarthur has managed to fill all their Representative teams successfully and we have given permission for players to be placed on the pick-up list for Softball NSW across all age groups. We have many players currently overseas playing, in development Australian teams and going to world championships. We have had many successful teams this year. Along with all of our successes we have players participating in friendship, academy, NSW and PSSA School. Softball Macarthur has a bright future always striving to increase our numbers. We continue to investigate new options for the game, development, member retention strategies and new member gains. We would like to acknowledge the continued assistance and support provided by Softball NSW as we strive to provide a quality sporting, social and community experience to the people of Macarthur. Neidra Hill President We encourage players in all age groups by having mixed teams, enabling players to play in multiple age groups at no extra cost and girls allowed to play down in the same age group has helped develop our young female players as well as creating a well-balanced and positive social experience. The competition is run and supported by a representative of each club and an executive member as the chairperson. Wednesday night Tee ball proves to be a huge success and the quality of our diamonds ensure minimal interruptions with wash out games and this is recognised state wide. The Umpiring team at Macarthur continues to grow its Junior ranks through the ‘Junior Blues’ Training initiative. We are also skilling up some of our Senior Players and Officials to becoming Umpires. Our regular season had Macarthur Umpires officiating the games in U16s and Youth competitions. These two age groups are core to many of the successes Macarthur are now enjoying. The Representative season witnessed more and more of Macarthur’s own Umpires assisting and gaining excellent experience. With a dedicated core of Umpires, senior players developing their umpire skills and the Junior Blues program encouraging and developing a wide cross section of people. We in Macarthur look forward to new challenges and successes. We are building a great team of Statisticians and continue to increase our statistician ranks on a continuous basis. A level one clinic is scheduled before 2014/2015 season begins. The Director of Scoring has encouraged the existing scorers to develop their skills whilst encouraging interested parties to join these ongoing clinics. Our coaching clinics have successfully been running with Level One and Level Two coach clinics held over two days. The Director of Coaching plays a pivotal role in our Representative teams by overseeing the coaching plans of all Head Coaches. This ensures a consistency amongst 37 MACLEAY VALLEY Our season started in October 2014 and ended in March 2015 We had a small junior comp on a Saturday morning with training on a Wednesday afternoon. Our disability comp on a tuesday afternoon was very successful, this ran for most of our season, could of went longer if it wasn’t so cold! We had two ladies teams play in the Port Macquarie comp Our younger players team won A grade and our older ladies team made the semi finals in B grade. In co ordination with Kempsey Baseball some much needed work was done on the grounds and batting cages Financially we were steady with the small numbers we had for the season. We had a committee of only 3 to do all the work which made running the association very difficult. This season we will definately run the disability comp, probably will need two afternoons as the numbers are rising, we again will have two ladies teams go to port to play. MVSA had Anneleise Nohotima represent us in the 15’s regionals in Adelaide, state champs rep u15,u17,u19 and winter league. Emily Castles represented in u17, u19 and winter league. Kathleen Archer coach u17 Northern Country. We had Ashley Castles and Shei Nohotima start their level 2 umpiring. Ashley umpired at NIB games. Our goals for the next season are to increase our disability comp also to include gala days with other regions, keep improving our grounds, increase our volunteer numbers. Without the tremendous efforts of many, many people, Softball would possibly have ceased to exist at an Association level in Mudgee. Many of those volunteers no longer have children playing in our competitions but they still thought it was important to provide opportunities for the children of others. Other volunteers were busy parents who were willing to “pitch in” to assist in any way possible. Still other volunteers were just kids themselves, those who understand that participation requires effort and that just turning up to play is not enough. If you have contributed in any way – marking fields, setting up diamonds, purchasing and preparing and selling food in the canteen, scoring, umpiring, coaching, repairing grounds, sorting and checking equipment, writing stories for the local papers or honouring your commitments by turning up to play each week- then you have played a role in a sport with a continuous 38 year history in Mudgee going back to 1977. Thanks also to every volunteer who has helped sustain our PSSA and CHS Boys and Girls KO competitions. The effort put into Primary school Softball in particular has not always led to a noticeable increase in particular on weekends but maintaining the PSSA Boys and Girls KO remains our best avenue for recruitment of new players. I also want to particular thank the Executive members who have taken on administrative, secretarial and financial roles which have involved countless extra hours of work. To Robyn Sharp, Robyn Burke, Owen Stait, Mel Date, Jill PlunketThank you. Without detailing the huge contribution of each of them, I do need to pay tribute to Secretary Robyn Sharp for continuing in the role for over 2 years when her children were playing in the Penrith Association. It would have been very easy to step aside and pass on the role of Secretary on to someone else but Robyn did not choose to do that. I also need to remind you all that the Executive has taken a decision over the past two years to effectively cut Registration fees in an effort to attract and retain players. This has inevitably led to financial losses over those 2 years, losses which were to some extent lessened by income from other sources such as the Canteen. The incoming Executive will need to consider the success or other wise of that approach and to frame a new Table of Fees for 2015-2016. range of sports, more so for larger families. (4) Softball requires skills which can require years of coaching and training to master. Pitching and catching are 2 obvious examples. When other sports require just a whistle and 1 ball, or playing roles that are easily interchangeable, they are clearly attractive to players who might not want to spend a lot of time developing pitching skills, for example. (5) Many young people now work in part time jobs and weekend flexibility may not exist. (6) A governing body which can be resistant to change and which is so financially stretched and short staffed that it is not always able to provide the kind of support enjoyed by sports such as Australian Football. In spite of all these constraints and more, our role is to continue to provide people of all ages in our community with the opportunity to develop new skills, to develop new skills, to test those skills in a competitive and collaborative environment, to enjoy the friendships that team involvement helps to foster, to enjoy a vigorous outdoor activity which can provide fitness and other health benefits. Finding enough participants to form enough teams to run an effective competition is the real challenge that we must strive to overcome. Mick Boller has stepped down as president of the Mudgee Association and leaves the legacy of a very distinguished career with his own personal Softball highlights including• Winning the Under 15’s Girls Country Championships in Taree in the mid 1980’s defeating Wagga Wagga by 9-6. • Finishing undefeated in the Central Region Under 15’s Champions in the same year, defeating CumberlandNepean, North Shore, Western Districts, Auburn and Manly. • Mudgee providing 7 State and 1 National representative/s in National Championships- Tracy Gawthorne (16’s, 19’s,Women’s), Nicole Golden (16’s), Jahymi Dowel (19’s), Nathan Sharp (19’s and 23’s), Rachel Sharp (17’s and Australia 17’s), Matt Sprig (17’s), Bria Toohey (19’s and 23’s) • MHS Open Girls team winning the WA PSSA Girls (4 years), WA CHS Girls (15 years) and NSWCHSSA Convenor (10 years) Many challenges face the incoming committee, in particular, to arrest the decline in registration and engage the local business community to stabilise our financial position. Mick Boller President We face many challenges and some are outside our control. Competition for participants in intense. High profile (1) sports with broad media coverage, such as Cricket, have a massive advantage over us. Sports which run right throughout the year, such as Touch, also have an advantage. Most other sports have relative simple rules and many (2) require little or no equipment. Our rules are very complex and detailed and roles such as Umpiring are not easily picked up. (3) Affiliation fees to local Councils and State bodies have become a serious impediment to participation in a wide 39 NEWCASTLE & DISTRICT Another successful season has come and gone. We were lucky enough to have not lost any games due to washout/hot weather. Volunteers are the key to success with non-profit sporting organisations. I would like to thank every person who volunteered throughout the year, no matter how big or small their contribution was, it was greatly appreciated by the NDSA board. Club committees are to be congratulated on their hard work throughout the season. It is good to see new faces volunteering, with fresh ideas to help Clubs evolve and grow. A Facility Grant Application with the Dept of Sport and Rec. was successful and we were able to erect permanent back nets on two of our diamonds. The next step is to have lights erected on our top two diamonds. This is still a work in progress and we are currently seeking sponsorship from local businesses which will help offset some of the cost. NORTH SHORE DISTRICT 11 Full sized diamonds – 3 Teeball diamonds – Canteen Block – Permanent pitching nets – children’s playground – Club run BBQ. In April 2015 we invested in replacing all of the pitching mats and most of the batting mats. Highlights: Rachel Lack was named Female Athlete of the Year and Alan Moore was named Official of the Year at the SNSW State Teams’ dinner. Karen Marr was able to return to the North Shore family for a while and offered her expertise training some of our pitchers. Representives: Registrations: Our registrations were on par with our previous season. It was fantastic to see so many male players out on the diamonds. I hope we can continue this positive trend in our sport. Rules: NSDSA revised their rules to make them more player friendly. The Modball rules were revised to create a faster more active game. This has proved popular with the players. Rules were also revised to allow players to play across between clubs, thereby creating a more balanced competition. The shortie rule was removed from the rules. Future: NSDSA will continue to focus on recruitment in the younger age groups with the aim of increasing our Tball membership by 10% or more. Geoff Day President ORANGE & DISTRICT ODSA had a fantastic season in 2014/2015. Player numbers showed a great improvement largely due to the recruitment efforts in hosting come and try days for all ages plus the annual Tee ball Gala day for schools hosted every year by David Ball, a life member of the Orange softball community. We saw an increase in numbers mostly in tee ball, eventually having 16 teams, which we then split into Tee ball B 5-7 yr olds ( 5 teams) and Tee ball A 8 - 11 yr olds (11 teams). We also saw a rise in our youth competition with the transfer to Friday evening being very successful. We had theme nights in youth this year with no uniform nights, dress up nights, music playing etc to add to the atmosphere and we anticipate further growth in this competition for 2015/2016. We had a slight increase in seniors Mixed B comp but our opens was a team down however efforts to make mixed B more social next season may entice the more competitive players back to our opens competition. We jumped from the low 300’s to over 420 in registrations this year. We have shown a good increase in official’s numbers due to hosting Level 1 and 2 coaching clinics, level 1 and 2 scoring clinics and we have a couple more level 1 and almost level 1 umpires, due to the great efforts of Aiden Kelly and Mac Reith Snare as our umpiring coordinators. The hard work for our umpiring crew and scorers culminated in the association receiving the SNSWUA Affiliate of the year award, Mac Reith Snare received the umpires encouragement award, Aiden and Mac both achieved their Level 2 umpires accreditation and Lexi Hitchen gained her Level 4 scoring accreditation was is a fantastic achievement. Our Disabilities program again continued successfully for the 4th consecutive year, and will again be running again this season, we have many volunteers assisting but again special thanks goes to Steve and Lyn Rath and Cathy Gutterson for all their efforts in coordinating the program and giving the players a very enjoyable experience. ODSA would also like to thank the Dept of Sport & Rec for their assistance in running such a great program. The program has developed a great reputation with families travelling from as far as Dubbo to bring their children to join the fun (just under 2 hours drive each way). We had boys & girls Rep teams, plus strong contingent of umpires compete at Teeball, Modball & U15’s this year with girls and boys also playing at the U17 & U19 state championships with some of the teams going as Orange, other teams as Centrals, which are teams made up of Orange, Mudgee, Wagga and pickups from Sydney, this is a relationship we have enjoyed and look forward to further developing in our ‘Central Region’. We again had strong numbers playing at rep levels this year with a large number of boys and girls play for NSW Country at the Junior International challenge and Australian U15 Regionals. Three boys and one girl were invited to attend 41 U17 State trials this year, good luck to those for their future rep career and we also have players compete in Sydney at Winter league, development league and Georges River Men’s A grade comps as well. The PSSA, CHS and ODSA continue their long running association as ODSA assisted in the running of the gala days and knock out carnivals by supplying umpires and canteen facilities on the days. And again a good number of players have been selected into the Western region PSSA & CHS teams which will compete at the State titles this year. Two local high school sides competed at the CHS knockout finals and Aiden Kelly, Mac Reith Snare, Georgia Kiel, Graydon Lisle and Mitch King have and will all be attending either PSSA and CHS state and/or National titles as umpires. We hosted the U15 State Championship in November, and a huge thank you goes to all the efforts of the organising committee and the many volunteers who helped the Championships run so smoothly with great feedback received. The wine tasting proved a big success and also showcased what the local area has to offer. We are still working with council as the future new Facilities at Jack Brabham Park are finally getting to the stage of releasing documents to tender and are hopeful of construction commencing asap. We are also currently undergoing resurfacing to some of Jack Brabham Park to upgrade drainage and irrigation at the moment and unfortunately the winter weather is playing havoc with the completion of the works prior to the season commencement, but works will be completed early into our next season. We thank Orange City Council and staff for all their efforts and assistance provided every year and especially the past year with hosting the state titles. Finally, again a huge thank you goes to all the hardworking executive & committee members, plus all the officials and people who volunteered their time during the season to keep this a great association to be involved with and I wish anyone taking a position in the upcoming executive the best & thanks for offering your services to help continue the success of Orange softball. Geoff Kelly President PENRITH CITY Membership: We had 43 junior teams from 7 clubs and 26 senior teams from 9 clubs for a total of 69 teams. We provide competition for 4 year olds in Benny Ball through to our social Div 4 Ladies. In all, we run 9 junior competitions including mixed Benny Ball, Boys and Girls Teeball, Modball, Minors and Majors. Additionally there were 4 divisions of Open Ladies and 2 divisions of Open Men. Facilities: Surveyors Creek Softball Facility has 8 permanent diamonds with enclosed dugouts and benches. The 2 main diamonds are fully fenced with Lights. The amenities block contains the canteen which services our members during competition periods. The amenities block has an alarmed equipment room, a storage room, 2 umpire change rooms and toilets. A new SMS lighting system has been installed at our ground by Penrith City Council. This new system has saved the Association thousands in electricity charges. Sponsorship: The association was heavily supported this year by Penrith City Council, Panthers, Armour Automotive, Love to Bounce, STEPH NSW Pty Ltd (Accounting) and Guardian Funerals. The Association won a grant for lighting for one of the batting tunnels valued at $34,000. Council have completed this work. Another Grant application has been submitted for the other tunnel – Community Building Partnerships Grant Program 2015. The Association also received $9,000 for junior development programs from Penrith ClubGRANTS Category 1 money from Panthers Highlights: This past season saw many PCSA players and officials involved at State and National Level. This is a testament to the drive and determination of the PCSA softball community in developing them from a young age. We are also very pleased to see these players “giving back” by coaching junior Representative teams and their involvement with skills clinics. Umpires:- Congratulations to Amanda Houison on attaining her Level 7 ISF umpiring accreditation. Congratulations to Representatives. all of our State and Australian Other Achievements: Teeball Boys State Champions. Under 13 Boys and Girls State Champions Under 17 Boys and Girls State Champions Technical Areas: In consultation with SNSWUA, PCSA introduced a Fast Track Program for the many Club Umpires who umpire games most weekends for their respective clubs and are generally players as well. These people are experienced and knowledgeable about softball, but do not have the time (through playing / coaching each week) to commit to a full time Umpire Crew. They just need a refresher on arm actions, and rotations over approximately 6 weeks, then can be assessed for their Level 1 Accreditation. The program is in its infancy but showed it is possible. Our new coaches completed the Level 1 Coaching Courses in a one day group session. Many PCSA Umpires worked hard to achieve their next level; Kaye Greggs continues to work in the background running courses to further develop PCSA Scorers / Statisticians. Future: Increase the number of qualified umpires across the association. Increase coaching levels to accommodate demand of development teams. In future years we will need to lift the profile of softball in our area to encourage more players to our sport. Loretta Watts President SOUTHERN DISTRICTS The Association continues to have the use of Jacquie Osmond Reserve for both summer and winter. We continue to work with Liverpool City Council to develop our facility and ensure maintenance requirements are carried out when necessary. QANTAS Credit UNION as our major sponsor. This is a two year partnership after which is in the process of being reviewed for a further 2 years. We also were successful in obtaining another sponsor – All Designed Projects This is a 12 month sponsorship and will be reviewed in September 2015. In 2014-2015 we were success full in receiving a grant of $2.932.00 from Liverpool Council for the purchase of First Aid Kits and new Line Marker. Liverpool City Council provides us tremendous support in repairs and maintenance of our diamonds and amenities as well as giving us the opportunity to apply for grants. Highlights: Unfortunately we could not follow up last year’s achievement of increased membership this year. However we still continue to provide the following programmes to promote the sport in our District. • A Batter Up Program – achieved similar participants as last year • Continuation of Slow Pitch during winter • Also our clubs continuing recruitment and retention Programs. The Association continues to provide opportunities and support to our players and officials who strive to represent the Association NSW & Australia. In 2015 the Association had 14players; Cameron Bint, Liam O’Leary, Hayden Mathews, Kieran O’Leary, Mason Rossi, Izack Rossi, Logan Campbell, Daniel Harrison, Blake Jackson, Matthew Sheehan, Bradley Harrison, Kayne Kajan, Tim Nazar, and Tom Noble represent NSW at the National Championships. Tony Jackson was an Assistant Coach and Karen Dinapoli administrator with the Under 17 Mens Team, Maria Wakefield statistician with the Under 19 Men’s State team and Life Member Adam Sheehan head coach of NSW Open Men with Diana Oakes the statistician. Technical Areas: The Association continues to develop a small but enthusiastic team of umpires. Paul Bourke, Steve Smith and Joe Kellermeier lead a team of umpires and are developing our junior blues program with great results. In the scoring area our Scoring Co-Ordinator, Maria Wakefield continues to be successful in developing scorers in the Association and a number of people are looking to continue in this area of the sport. 43 We are looking forward to maintain a great relationship with Liverpool City Council who provides us with a facility that is developing all the time. We will look at avenues of upgrading this facility. The Association will be continuing and hopefully expanding The Batter Up Program and Slow Pitch during winter. Also we look to maintain and develop a strong relationship with QANTAS Credit Union. Bruce McCahon President SUTHERLAND SHIRE Softball as a National Sport continues to struggle with national membership numbers continuing to fall. Unfortunately our membership overall also continues to fall fielding 62 teams this year, down from 64 and registering 731 individual members, down from 775 last season. However, even though we had fewer members I think the role of the Association is to provide the best Softball experience possible no matter how many members we have and to that end I believe we continued to provide a great Softball experience to all our members in the 2014/15 season. I hope all players and officials walked away from the 2014/15 season with many great memories and I look forward to everyone “bringing a friend” to next year’s competition, particularly in the senior grades. The fun did not stop at our fields with many of our Representative Teams going on to do Sutherland proud over the year well done to all the players and officials who worked so very hard to make all our representative teams a success again this season. 2014/15 saw continued support of SSSA Representative in State Tournaments. Sutherland Association Teams entered into State Tournaments included: • U11’s Girls & Boys • U13’s Girls & Boys • U15’s Girls & Boys • U17’s Girls • U19’s Women Open’s Women • • Winter League Women State League Women • The Sutherland U19s team were named joint State Champions after going through the tournament undefeated. The Opens team came close again this year with another Final appearance. Sutherland was very well represented at NSW and Australian level. Our players helped win National Championships in the Opens and U17s Well done to all those who were successful in making a New South Wales, Australian or National or International Teams/ Squads, you continue to make Sutherland very proud. We wish you all the best in your future endeavours. Stacey McManus (NSW & Australian Women) Danica Howlett (NSW Open Women Assistant Coach) Emma Luliano (Australian U19) Chantelle Ladner (NSW U19 & U23, Australian U19) Shannon Keevers (NSW U17) Laura Passfield (NSW U19) 44 Ashleigh Wright (NSW U19) Melissa Byrne (NSW U23) Bria Toohey (NSW U23) Madison Ashworth (NSW U19) Jade Farrell (NSW U19) Zaraha Parker (NSW U17) Barry Rumsey (NSW U17 Head Coach) Our representative portfolio cannot function without the support of so many people who make everything happen. I would like to thank all our Coaches, Managers, Scorers, Umpires who attend all our tournaments, Parents and The Management Committee. Also a huge shout out to our group of dedicated umpires who support the teams throughout the rep season. I would like to wish all our future rep players and staff the very best in the upcoming season – go get’em Sutherland… Craig Oberg President TAMWORTH This year TSA was able to hold an A grade women’s competition , a Women’s social and for the first time since the rebuild of softball in Tamworth a Men’s competition. With the continued development of our 3 clubs, each were able to field teams in all competition as well as a few extra teams entering the social competition. A number of small local businesses provided sponsorship for teams and the clubs this season. TSA were able to send a full team to the Under 13’s State cup and an Under 15’s team to the State Cup with the assistance of some lovely MWSA players. One of our T-Ball players was given an opportunity to attend the Under 11’s championships thanks to Orange Softball Association. Our Batter Up Program was very successful in term four with 69 enrolments, we received 3 new kits from Softball NSW. The little ones seemed to have a great time although they were very eager to play real games. The program was run by Scott Mason with the assistance of the Representative Players. Unfortunately the follow up 10 week program in term one wasn’t as successful, the numbers stopped us from running a T-ball Competition. Unfortunately we are yet to run a successful T-ball and Modball Competition, TSA have recently received an invitation to be apart of the National Primary Games hosted by NIAS. We are hoping that this opportunity will increase softballs profile among this group. Due to the assistance of our wonderful volunteers our annual fund-raising event, The Country Music Festival was very successful. Despite a decrease in visitors we had a slight increase in takings to assist with our ground fees. TSA was able to obtain a grant from West Leagues Club this year. The club will be supplying a sign for our amenities building and a sign located at the corner of Carter and Hurst Streets. The club will also be reimbursing the association for the cost of the 2 pitching strips added to our fields earlier in the year by our volunteers. Looking Forward, our goals. Hosting a fantastic Under 15’s Championships in November 2015. Participating in the National Primary Games. Increased growth in all areas Gaining levelled umpires, coaches and scorers within the association. Representation in the Under 11’s, U13’s, U15’s and U17’s Mandy Brown President 45 WAGGA WAGGA This brings to an end my second and what was my final season as President of the Association, and I thank you the players, the Clubs and the Executive for trusting me to put the interests of Wagga Softball forward. The past 2 years have certainly brought about what I believe is the beginning of much needed changes for the Wagga Softball Association to continue in a pathway for it to be highly regarded and considered the best Country Affiliate in NSW. Changes in any organisation can be difficult and they can certainly be challenging. It is through trial and in some cases error, that organisations can and will move forward. If the Wagga Association holds back from change and is not dynamic and move with the game of Softball, then unfortunately the Association itself will not be successful. There are players and administrators whom have up and left our Association in my time as President due to the nonacceptance and the lack of understanding of the local rules by Clubs, the flagrant breaches of the rules and the equity and general fairness of the game being challenged at every opportunity by Clubs. I can only caution those who take on the Executive roles to continue to strive for, and continue to push forward and make the necessary changes the Wagga Softball Association needs. Clubs need to also work with the Association more closely to ensure change is communicated across the board. I believe that, even though at times it was very demanding, the Association Executive this year have performed extremely well throughout the challenging season. We are all unpaid volunteers, and at times the amount of stress imposed upon some Executive members by certain individuals of the Association is beyond belief. Thank you for standing by the Association and importantly for standing by your beliefs in what can and will be the best Regional Softball Association in NSW. There are many ways to increase player numbers in the Wagga Softball Association, and Clubs play a truly underestimated but significantly critical role in this regard. Clubs need to be progressive and move forward and start working together across the board in the areas of recruitment and retention. Clubs need to open their doors to each other and share resources, recommend players to other Clubs when their teams are full, and at every opportunity recruit for the upcoming season. Clubs need to also adopt and solidify their roles as Selectors. This year saw the first real review of the player and club fee structure in many years. The costs of running the Association were broken down into cost categories, and it was very easy to see that the Association was not so financial in past years and that the Association facilities and equipment were almost non existent and extremely run down. The Association, although still not extremely profitable, as it shouldn’t be, is now able to fund the basic necessities and requirements 46 of any sporting club. The Association has purchased new representative player uniforms across the board, has a new PA system, new kit bags, has a well equipped canteen, and has ample Umpiring equipment amongst some of the big ticket expenditure items this season. I encourage the new Executive to implement annual price increases no matter how small to keep up with NSW Softball increases and the general costs of running the association price increases. Umpiring continues to be problematic for the Association. Despite the appointment of a Chief Umpire to the Association Executive last season and a Development Officer the training of Umpires needs significant review. I strongly recommend that every Club needs to be active and provide a minimum number of Umpires to the Association at the beginning of the season and then these umpires are rostered by the Association throughout the Season. Clubs need to take some ownership of Umpiring and this is urgent. Training and Development of Umpires is extremely important for the upcoming season as we all know that without Umpires we don’t have a game. Representative players, both boys and girls, that travelled away across a number of age groups also performed extremely well. We are certainly on the radar for the quality of our representative players and the effort by not only these players, but their clubs is commendable. To the players, parents, coaching staff and umpires – thankyou for making this happen. A mention to the Associations State named player, Montanna Kearns as not only is she a fantastic player, but she s also espousing the Wagga Association at every opportunity. We all need to support Montanna and ensure we keep her career in mind. French Fields has seen further improvement this season, and this has been attributable to the hard work of both council and the now Association paid groundsmen. It is important that Clubs still play a role in each round assisting with the organisation of the grounds and equipment. Wagga City Council has made available an immediate grant of $10,000 to be used by the Association to upgrade Diamond 2 fencing. Fundamental changes are taking place and the administration changes have continued this season. My parting statement is simple - the Wagga Softball Association needs to be fair, encourage and promote all players and importantly be open and transparent. Some past history and now historical issues need to be forgotten, and personal objectives need to be left at home. We need to all work as one for the betterment of our game – softball.
