Cut a 6 inch length of 5/8” wired ribbon and remove the wire from ONE side of the ribbon. This can also be worked with non-wired ribbon. From the folded end of the ribbon, turn the NO WIRE corner down at a right angle. With a knot in a doubled thread of matching color, start approximately 1/8” up from the point and baste to the top of the diagonal edge. Take two tacking stitches at the top of the diagonal to prevent this diagonal basting line from gathering into the point. From the tacking stitches at the corner, continue to baste across the “no wire” edges through both thicknesses of the ribbon. Fold the other end down and baste to the bottom without tacking at the corner this time. 3808 Summer Ave Memphis, TN 38122 (901) 458-6109 amys3808@aol.com www.amybunger.com 3 RIBBON LEAF continued Pull the basting thread to gather the ribbon along the basting line up to the tacking stitches. Open the two sides of the ribbon. The end with the tail of thread should turn under toward the backside of the leaf, while the end with the knot should be fairly flat and pointed. Work a few tacking stitches into the backside of the seam. At the end of the gathered seam, take a tacking stitch through the fold of the ribbon to pull it toward the center and keep it away from the edges. Trim the tail of the knot, if needed, to keep it hidden under the leaf. Flip the leaf over and tack it to your canvas working tiny pinhead stitches into the gathered seam of the leaf. You may also work a few tacking stitches along the edge of the ruffle to hold the leaf in place and prevent the sides from lifting off the canvas exposing the backside. This technique can be used on ribbon with or without wired edges. If you select silk ribbon, you can work very small delicate leaves as well as large leaves. Satin and velveteen ribbons are too heavy to work small leaves, but make gorgeous medium or large leaves. Cut longer lengths for wider ribbons. 3808 Summer Ave Memphis, TN 38122 (901) 458-6109 amys3808@aol.com www.amybunger.com 4 FESTIVE CANVASES Time to gussy up for all of those holiday parties.
