Safety . . . . . Protection for every body! NHOUD IINHOUD Foreword As from December 1998 all forklifts are required to be fitted with some sort of safety feature protecting it’s operator in the event of an accident. In the unfortunate event of a tip-over the operator runs the risk of great bodily harm if the correct precautionary SAFETY BELTS page 3 - 7 safety measures are not taken to protect the driver. CONTACT SWITCHES page 8 - 9 There are several safety systems available capable of restraining the operator in case of a tip-over. The most common system being a 2 point hip restraint mounted either to the seat of forklift. The main role of this code of practice is to set out risk situations where mobile machinery should have some form of protective structure protecting the operator in case of a tip-over. As an alternative to the seatbelt there are PPS and IWS systems available which will be explained in this special safety brochure. A closed structure where doors need to be closed prior to operating the machine is a good example. There are a number of work hazards associated with operator plant machinery and there are a number of measures that should be considered by employers in managing these hazards. IWS (Pilot Protector) page 12 - 13 Plant machinery with an open cab, need to be fitted with seatbelts or safety doors that keep the operator in the cab in case of an accident. In case of a roll over hazard, employers can consider: - improving machine stability; - leveling the work area; - using a different machine; - hand-working the task; - removing the operator from the danger area; - protecting the driver in the event of a possible roll over. Below we will briefly explain some of the features and possibilities. A crucial factor of a retractable seatbelt is the mounting position. Should this be mounted directly to the cab or attached to the seat, enabling the belt to absorb the suspension travel. If the operator requires more freedom of movement it is advised to use an ELR or a so called DUO-sensitive. The Emergency Locking Retractor is a seatbelt that only locks with sudden jolts or in the case of a tipover. The overall length of seatbelts is normally around 120 cm but if required can be supplied with belts up to 200 cm. Belts can also be supplied in a variety of colors making it easier to spot whether the operator is wearing the belt or not. ALR - Automatic Locking Retractor ELR - Electric Locking Retractor An ALR belt, Automatic Locking Retractor is the most common seatbelt used on forklifts and are mounted to a fixed point on the seat, locking the operator in place. Both ALR and ELR belts can be supplied with a wide range of locks, which are available with either flexible or fixed or can even be supplied with a switch. EBLO Seating ..... Protection for every body! 4 - 5 3 point seatbelts 3 point seatbelts The belts are commonly used on vehicles operating on the open road offering a better protecting than the standard 2 point seatbelts. Due to the diagonal belt the upper body is better protected in case of an accident. Even though the operator is held in place by the 3-point belt, it still offers enough comfort and freedom of movement. 4 point adjustable harness 4 point harness These so called “full harnesses” are required where the operator needs to be securely fixed in place. This is normally required in the most severe situations where there is a potential risk of the driver being thrown from the machine. These harnesses however restrict the movement of the operator. Note: These recommendations do not displace the employers obligation to check whether the operators follow the correct safety procedures. Employees must follow all safety procedures and wear seatbelts at all time. 3P 276 3P 360 4 point harness (color) 3P 276/360 ISO 3P 276/360 ISO Switch 4 point EBLO Seating ..... The function of these switches are more or less the same and offer safety whilst operating the machine. Only when a driver is properly seated does the presence switch enable the driver to operate the machine or use other functions. This means that the machines operation is rendered inoperable if there is nobody correctly seated or if the driver gets up from the seat. (IP Value) Switches are available from 12V to 80V en can be fitted with a wide range of connectors and terminals. Switches can have several functions, registering the movement of the driver and can be fitted with several layers of security. EBLO Seating ..... Protection for every body! 8 - 9 Security systems N O I T C E T O PR PROTECTION SYSTEMS Since the mandatory introduction of protection systems in December 2002 the demand for alternative protective measures has increased. Seatbelts, harnesses and other protective measures. A seatbelt prevents the driver from jumping out of the vehicle in case of an emergency. Since December 2002 all vehicles with a load capacity up to 10 ton must comply with the European guideline 95/63/EG. This guideline describes that all vehicles with a lifting capacity up to 10 ton must be fitted with some sort of preventive restraint. This can be in the form of a seatbelt (usually fitted as original equipment) or other alternative means of protection. As an alternative to the seatbelt, where the driver is forced to buckle in every time he gets out of the machine, we offer alternative systems like the PPS and IWS. These systems offer the same protection but are more user friendly. These PPS and IWS systems can be operated with very little effort and help the operator to do his job in a safe way. In the event of a tip-over these protective doors keep the driver within the contours of the machine preventing fatal injuries. As a direct replacement for the seatbelt, these systems save a lot of time and offer much more freedom of movement. With the addition of presence switch the PPS and IWS offer even more protection by preventing any operation of the machine until the doors are firmly closed, allowing the driver to do his job safely. Safety and security for everybody. The following companies have their machines fitted with Personal protection systems: • Greenery • Heineken • Coca-cola • Raab Kärcher • Aero Ground Services (Schiphol) • Jongeneel • Nestle • Sara Lee • Scania Nederland B.V. • Xerox • Flex Tronic • Unilever • ECT N O I T C E T O R P ODY FOR EVERY B EBLO Seating ..... Rubber shoulder- and hip cushions on the inside of the gates offer support when driving backwards. To aid the driver in his daily operation, the door is supported by a damper making it easier to access the machine. The only correct way of protection is by making sure the driver stays within the contours of the machine as described in the guideline 95/63/EG. The locking mechanism is conveniently located near the steering wheel and can be opened quickly. The Pilot Protector offers the correct protection in case of a roll-over and complies with current legislation. A quarter of all injuries occur due to a roll-over, where the driver is flung from the machine, slips out of the cabin or tries to jump out of the machine, with great bodily harm or death as a result. The IWS systems are fitted within the contours of the machine making sure the operator is not restricted in any way. Heavy duty locking mechanism ensuring maximum safety and durability. Optional Presence switch available for even more security. Maximum protection due to the robust steal construction EBLO Seating ..... This electric system is maintenance free. HRS-E system as two separate arms. These versions have doors mounted to the rear of the overhead guard allowing these to be mounted to the smallest of cabs. PPS HRS-E is a semi-electric protection system, protected by an electric switch, preventing the driver from operating the machine with the doors open. The doors need to be opened manually. Universal adaption strips available allowing the systems to be mounted between the seat and slide rails. Available for all brands and models. Height adjustable enabling correct positioning of the system. All versions are mounted within the contours of the machine and allow the doors to open upwards. This means that the systems can be fitted to the smallest of cabs and still allow easy access in the smallest spaces. The advantages: • Fits most makes and models of forklifts; • Can fit on most types of standard seats; • Quick and easy assembly; • Does not impede operations • Only systems with a FEM section 2 approval The doors are cleverly designed to protect the driver without impeding his vision whilst operating the machine and leaving him with enough room to move. There are several doors available in different shapes and sizes allowing even the smallest of cabs to be retrofitted with a protection system. HRS-E DUO Systems All systems are tailor made ready to be fitted. By applying slight inward pressure to the door, the lock will release and open upwards. An electric circuit makes sure the vehicle cannot be operated until the door is securely closed again. The PPS MONO systems are mounted to the seat and are available in 3 versions; ERS, HRS-E and HRS. EBLO Seating ..... Protection for every body! 14 - 15 PPS HRS-E duo WK systems PPS Belt systems GBS/ GBS-E These systems can be compared to the PPS HRS-E DUO, the biggest This belt system or so called GBS system is a safety system that protects difference being the extra hinge between the system and the cab frame. the driver if the vehicle was to roll over or have a head on collision. This system can be mounted to almost all makes of trucks. The hinges are fitted with a safety switch that allows the vehicle to be operated when closed. The GBS system is supplied with an adjustable lock enabling the angle and length to be adjusted. To open the system just release the locking mechanism. Due to the extra hinges the system can be completely pushed outward allowing for a battery change or maintenance of the vehicle. With the releasing of the lock the system will open and automatically roll up the belt. The opening speed is adjustable via an oil filled damper. To exit the vehicle all that is needed is a slight inward pressure applied to the door to release it from the lock. This guarantees a quick and safe use of the vehicle. The systems are supplied with a special seatbelt which is mounted on the right hand side at a certain angle. The belt allows a certain range of movement but locks when the truck exceeds an angle of 15 degrees. The legs are also protected in case of a roll over. The system can be supplied with an electronic sensor which makes driving with an open system impossible. Due to the length of the belt the bonnet can be easily accessed for maintenance.
