Annual Report 2011
Annual Report 2011 ds i K e v g e i h Ac owin t Gr & Ou e d i s n I A PATH TO A BRIGHTER FUTURE ACHIEVEKIDS MISSION AchieveKids provides special education and mental health services to children who have complex developmental, emotional and severe behavioral problems and support for their families. We do this through individualized, multi-disciplinary educational plans at our non-public school campuses. ACHIEVEKIDS VISION AchieveKids’ vision is for every child to achieve the maximum possible self-reliance and have the best possible quality of life in our community, and for their families to have confidence in their future. ACHIEVEKIDS VALUES We meet our kids where they are We take our kids where they need to go We treat everyone with respect and dignity 2 ACHIEVEKIDS ANNUAL REPORT 2011 Growing Inside and Out need. In the process we will be “greening” our Palo Alto school with high efficiency air conditioning and lighting. 2011 was a year of significant growth and development for AchieveKids, not only in the number of students we serve, but also in the programs we offer. Mental health funding for special education is shifting away from county government to local school districts, and we are seeing a significant number of school districts choosing to contract directly with us. This service is being quickly integrated into our existing district individual service agreements. During the year we saw our enrollment rise to a record high of 109 students by December 2011 and we continue to expand in ways that better meet the needs of our students and their families. This year we launched AKPlus @Home, our first donor supported family services program. This program helps families become experts on their child’s behavior by teaching parents principles and practices of positive behavior so they can develop their own in-home approaches. We expect to be able to offer the program in Spanish shortly. In San Jose we opened a second classroom for our most severely affected students. This new classroom has its own bathroom and immediate access to a roll-in shower, full kitchen, multi-sensory room, and outdoor play-yard. As we look ahead in 2012, we will be further expanding student capacity at both our San Jose and Palo Alto schools through a series of remodeling projects that will be completed over the next two years. We are well underway in developing plans and securing funding for a major renovation of our Palo Alto school site. We will be creating a state of the art, self-contained K-2 class, and remodeling other student areas to allow for expanded student enrollment to meet the community Student Profile Finally, attaining the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) certification will be a major focus of our educational quality improvement program in 2012. This multiyear process will be headed up by our Associate Director, Jean Spurr, MSW. All our “growing” both inside and out, would not be possible without the continued support of our donors, community volunteers, staff, the Peninsula Children’s Auxiliary, and our dedicated Board of Directors. Thank you for your continued support. Best of wishes for a healthy and prosperous year, Michael Gennette, PhD Executive Director “I have been a part of AchieveKids for the past 35 years and can’t imagine a more rewarding and fulfilling way to donate my time. By leaving a legacy I can perpetuate this connection. I guess I just can’t envision ending my ties to this amazing place! AK has played an essential role in providing services in our community for the past 50 years, and I would hope the legacy I leave at some future time will help insure the continuation of those services for the next 50 years.” Carol Pliner Board of Directors Vice President Primary Disability % Autism41 Emotional Disability 29 Mental Disability 4 Intellectual Disability 18 Other Health Impairment 6 Specific Learning Disability 1 Visual Impairment 1 Ethnicity % Asian13 Black or African American 8 Hispanic32 White45 Other2 Gender % Female20 Male80 3 A PATH TO A BRIGHTER FUTURE Highlights AchieveKids earned an “Approved” certification from the California Department of Education and was specifically commended for: • Supporting students to demonstrate appropriate social skills • Focusing on students working in the community and future employment • Working in small groups in class and the high level of attention paid to students • Achieving significant progress with many students During the year, 14 students transitioned from AchieveKids to less restrictive programs. In September, AchieveKids launched AKPlus @Home, a new in-home behavior services program that helps families become “experts” on their child’s behavior. It teaches parents principles and practices of positive behavior so they can develop their own in-home approaches. In December, over 200 members of the community attended the Peninsula Children’s Auxiliary 28th Annual Festival of Trees, enjoying lunch, a fashion show and holiday boutique at Palo Alto Hills Golf and Country Club. The guests were treated to entertainment by AchieveKids’ students. We expanded the use of technology in our classrooms by rolling out 25 new HP TouchSmart PCs. This new intuitive touch screen technology provides teachers with tools to support a variety of educational opportunities and provides a new level of accessibility for students with special needs. hool c s y m “I like they help r se io becau my behav me ith me w ey talk to s.” h and t my feeling t abou Programs Special Education We offer a range of educational programs from graded core-curriculum to life skills and other functionally-based academics. Community Integration We teach students to interact in community environments, from following safety signs, taking public transit and buying groceries, to eating in restaurants. Speech Therapy We focus on improving communication skills through one-on-one, in the classroom, on the job, and in the community training. Behavioral Program We conduct student assessments, develop and implement behavior intervention plans, program evaluations and staff coaching in all our school programs. Mental Health We focus on replacing abusive and aggressive behaviors with appropriate social skills while increasing self-awareness and selfesteem. Vocational Education We teach both job skills and work-related social skills to students 14 and over. Transition Services We work with students and their families to identify, choose and transition into other programs such as public schools and adult service programs. 4 ACHIEVEKIDS ANNUAL REPORT 2011 Message from the Board President from planning for the future, we would never move forward. So we plan and expand amidst uncertainty. We wish it would disappear, but the community need for our very special education services continues to grow. Enrollment is at an all-time high. To meet the increased demand, we are “infilling” at our Palo Alto and San Jose campuses by repurposing space for additional classrooms. As we do this, we’ll also be doing some remodeling to assure AchieveKids can continue to serve the community for years to come. This includes adding space for the most disabled students, and programming focused on younger children. We continue to focus on expanding our services to the families of our students, to help make them more successful by building on our school programs. This year we launched AKPlus @Home, a unique program that brings our staff into a student’s home with the objective of empowering the family to deal effectively with their child’s behavior issues at home. This unique program is completely funded by our fundraising efforts, by donors such as yourselves. On behalf of the board of directors of AchieveKids, we thank you. AchieveKids is actively looking for a third school site in central San Mateo County. We currently have many students from San Mateo County who would be better served closer to home. We feel a responsibility to meet the growing need there. All of this expansion comes in the midst of the usual confusion in California about the level of education funding. It seems that, every year, state funding is teetering on the brink of collapse, yet, each year, it eventually gets resolved. If we let that stop us Phil Bookman Board President We wish to offer our deepest gratitude and thanks to the Peninsula Children’s Auxiliary. For the past 45 years they have contributed over two million dollars to AchieveKids. “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” Margaret Mead Alice Rowland was a gentle person, with a welcoming smile always on her face. She cared deeply about the children at AchieveKids and took joy in their work and progress. Alice joined the Peninsula Children’s Auxiliary in 1995 and served on many committees. She was the current Vice President and will be sorely missed by the membership and the community. We will all remember the joy Alice expressed when talking about her husband, Richard and their son, Jeffrey, of whom she was very proud. Festival of Trees 2011 Alice Rowland 1939 – 2011 5 A PATH TO A BRIGHTER FUTURE “Growing” Our Path to a Brighter Future - The Endowment Fund Our endowment fund is a wonderful way to ensure that AchieveKids not only continues to grow but will also be able to serve the changing needs of our community well into the future. Our growing circle of legacy donors can be proud to know that their gifts will enable our important work to continue for generations to come by providing a permanent source of funding. AchieveKids’ endowment funds are invested in the Long-Term Growth Pool of the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, allowing us to utilize the oversight expertise of the members of the Foundation’s investment committee and the various portfolio investment managers of that Pool. AchieveKids’ primary focus for growing our endowment fund is to educate our donors on the lasting effects of “end of life” gifts, and to help them make informed decisions about planned giving to support the sustainability of AchieveKids.
