CIVIL SERVICES OFFICERS’ INSTITUTE CSOI E-Newsletter Issue 5, April to June 2015 Come springtime and it is time for activities filled with fun and entertainment. During the quarter, three stage plays were organized – to start with in April, - ‘Jaat Hee Poocho Sadhu Kee’ – written by Vijay Tendulkar and presented by ‘Nepathya’ Theatre Group under direction of Ms. Mala Kumar. An excellent play which brought out deep rooted social evils of our society on caste. In May, Film Theatre Society under the direction of Atul Satya Kaushik staged “WO LAHORE” – a musical drama on the turmoil in Punjab families during partition. The same group staged another comical and satirical play “Animal Farm” in May – a Hindi adaptation of George Orwell’s play with same title where the dirty politics in jungle kingdom is portrayed as rule of the jungle. It highlighted a satire on political class of today. of music and dance, continued to enthrall members. Dr. Shovna Narayan’s “Rhythm & Joy” – Kathak performance by her pupils to celebrate “World Dance Day” on 2 May 2015 was well appreciated . The SAKHA cultural group organized three musical evenings during the quarter to pay tributes to lyricist Mr. Anil Biswas, music director Shankar JaiKishan and acclaimed singer Talat Mehmood. All music events got an overwhelming response and music lovers were transported into the Bollywood years of 1960s. For interactive session, we had Shri M.J. Akbar to give an overview of his two books – “A Mirror to Power – Notes on a Fractured Decade” and “Tinder Box – The Past and Future of Pakistan” – which had galaxy of intellectuals to share their views on these books. A panel discussion was also organized by Mrs. Bulbul Sen Sarkar on “Business & Community – The Story of Corporate Social Responsibility in India” – a book written by Ms. Pushpa Sunder. Distinguished speakers – Dr. N. Chandra Mohan and Shri P. C Pandey discussed the subject of the book and exchanged thoughts on CSR & other areas. During June 2015, CSOI organized a special fortnight for children by screening a series of films along with a skill development adventure camp which was attended by 28 children in the age groups of 8 to 18 years. During the quarter, selected movies including Birdman, Shamitabh, NH-10, Badlapur, Fury, Dum laga ke Haisha and Theory of Everything were screened. The swimming pool opened with a bang for members and families on 15 April 2015. This year, CSOI got a record membership of 192 users in age groups from 65 years to 5 years. It is heartening to see the swimming pool and gym buzzing with members & families enjoying summer vacation. Now that the monsoons have set in Delhi, the mood will shift towards monsoon ball.
