July 2013 - Contra Costa Chapter, NECA
OUR 50TH YEAR CONTRA COSTA CHAPTER JULY 2013 In a very close election, decided by only two votes, Ron Bennett was elected as the new Business Manager of Local 302 for a three year term. Kirk Ferreira was elected as the new President and Jim Foley, Vice President. The new Business Manager and Officers begin their terms on July 24th. We congratulate Ron and wish him the best in his new position. We also want to say a special thank you to Hershel “Bart” Barton for taking over a very difficult job at one of the worst economic times in recent memory. We wish him well in all future endeavors. How It All Started This engraving of a painting by George Ottinger appeared in Harper’s Weekly Magazine on November 2, 1867. The Pony Express rider comes across some of the first electrical workers stringing telegraph lines in the Utah desert. The image would later be understood to capture the intersection of two eras — with the beginning of the electronic age displacing the Overland Express. The picture comes to life in this photograph of early linemen stringing telegraph lines in the right of way of the Transcontinental Railroad. October 12 - 15, 2013 Walter E. California Employers are required to take these four steps to prevent heat illness: 1. Training Train all employees and supervisors about heat illness prevention. 2. Water Provide enough fresh water so that each employee can drink at least 1 quart per hour, and encourage them to do so. 3. Shade Provide access to shade and encourage employees to take a cool–rest in shade for at least 5 minutes. They should not wait until they feel sick to cool down. 4.
