goldfish in a diving helmet; and Abby, a buck-toothed

Little merely needs „closure“ with dad over the sky

conceived by the late Christopher Reeve (SUPERMAN),

from which the whole family can learn. Set in Depressionera New York, the film follows 10-year-old baseball fan
Yankee Irving (voiced by Jake T. Austin), who is more
adept at remembering stats than he is at playing the
game. Despondent over his sandlot misfires, Yankee is
cheered when he makes the acquaintance of a baseball
named Screwie (voiced by Rob Reiner) who can actually
talk. Later, Yankee visits his dad at the Yankee Stadium,
where he is allowed to visit Babe Ruth’s famous bat,
Darlin’ (voiced by Whoopi Goldberg). The bat soon goes
missing, Dad loses his job, and Yankee takes off for
Chicago with a notion to deliver the bat to Babe. Along the
way, he makes numerous friends, including a trio of downand-out bums who take him under their wing, and a little

mobster Colin Sullivan. While Costigan and Sullivan get

into plenty of nail-biting situations that almost reveal their
true identities, Scorsese gradually unravels his strong
supporting cast, including Jack Nicholson as Sullivan’s
mob boss, Frank Costello; Ray Winstone as Costello’s
meat-headed muscle; Mark Wahlberg as a hot-headed
police sergeant; and Vera Farmiga as a love interest for
both Damon and Di Caprio’s characters.
Samurai master Koheita (Koji Yakusho) takes on his
biggest challenge to date when he becomes magistrate of
a town rife with corruption and crime. The infamous and
self-styled „Four Musketeers“ of Japanese cinema—
consisting of Akira Kurosawa, Keisuke Kinoshita, Kon
Ichikawa, and Masaki Kobayashi—collaborated on the
script for DORA-HEITA after forming their own production
company in 1969, although the movie wasn’t shot until
2000.

life on the job. This film manages to wring plenty of wellearned tears from its subject matter—as well as spinetingling thrills—which are the result of solid performances,
characterization, and good naturalistic dialogue from
screenwriter Lewis Colick. Barrett is great as Jack’s
worried wife; she and Phoenix exhibit strong, earthy
chemistry in their scenes together. Travolta makes a fine
fire captain who is graceful, sure of himself, and always
ready to give up the spotlight to the younger actors. Other

MENGELE is a rare achievement in Holocaust
documentary. Directors Bob Hercules and Cheri Pugh’s
story focuses on Eva Mozes Kor, a compelling protagonist
if there ever was one. Kor, a Midwestern real estate
agent, was, along with her twin sister Miriam, the victim of
sadistic medical experiments while imprisoned at Auschwitz during the Holocaust. One of numerous unlucky
guinea pigs tortured by Doctor Mengele, aka the „God of
Auschwitz“, Kor has forged a campaign to help victims of
that atrocious genocide to learn to forgive. Forgiveness of
Nazis, of course, is practically taboo in a culture of
reverent Holocaust commemoration and its attached moral
polarities, yet this victim believes it is the only way to
heal. When her twin sister tragically dies due to the
aftereffects of Mengele’s experiments, Kor attempts to
seek out the perpetrator through extensive research.

man, Werner Herzog’s LITTLE DIETER NEEDS TO FLY
details the life of Dieter Dengler, a survivor of both WWII
and Vietnam. Dengler grew up in Germany, and, dreaming
of one day flying a plane, left for the US when he was 18,
unable to speak English. Soon, he was in the Navy, flying
bombing missions over Laos and Vietnam, where his
plane was shot down and he was taken prisoner. He and
six others escaped the prison, but only he was known to
have survived. Herzog turns Dieter ’s story into something
much different than one might expect by putting Dieter
back into scenes from his past and recording his
amazingly understated reactions. For instance, in Laos,
where he was taken prisoner, Herzog binds Dengler’s
hands and feet as they were in 1966 and uses Vietnamese actors, complete with rifles, to play Viet Cong. It’s a
startling technique, one that lends this film an intensity
and sense of danger that Dengler consistently plays
down.

This harrowing documentary chronicles the Frankfurt trial
of 22 SS soldiers who served at the notorious Polish
concentration camp, Auschwitz. Of course there’s no way
to convey the actual horrors endured by the survivors of
the camp, where millions of Jews were killed and abused,
and though the trial was not filmed, hundreds of hours of
audio tapes from the hearing have allowed
documentarians Rolf Bickel and Dietrich Wagner to
provide the film with an intense soundtrack of survivor’s
testimony. Anguished voices recount the daily horrors they
endured, with refugees coming from all over the world to
testify against their former oppressors. The tapes are
underscored with footage from SS archives and the
Russian liberation of the camp as well as the courtroom
and modern-day Europe. Originally aired on German
television in 1993 in three parts—“The Investigation,“ „The
Trial,“ and „The Verdict“—it plays to devastating effect as
a three-hour omnibus. The film, which was released to
American theaters in a limited run shortly after the
execution of Saddam Hussein, is a chilling testament to
