The Club has organised numerous activities for families over the long weekend and I would encourage Members’ support for these. Whilst on social activities, you will find details of the KCC Centenary Cup Race Day at Sha Tin on 12 April. Again, your support for this long-standing Club event would be much appreciated. Turning to the Club Annual General Meeting held in December 2014, a number of issues were raised by Members and I would like to take this opportunity to respond to those which do not require further consideration. Accounts – Staff Leave Balance The question concerned the circumstances in which staff were being paid for unused annual leave. This is a requirement under the Employment Ordinance in that when staff leave the Club, they are entitled to salary payment in lieu of annual leave not yet taken. In addition, Management are working to ensure that this is kept to an absolute minimum and that staff take the holidays to which they are entitled. Playroom – Food Orders The Management team have advised that food orders (to be consumed in the seating area outside the Playroom) can be taken and signed for at the Pavilion. This arrangement will be subject to regular review taking account of the demand for F&B service around the Playroom area. Energy Saving Measures All new installations/equipment, including The Boundary Café, meet the latest energy saving standards. And, electricity consumption in the Café is much lower than before and the control programs have been revised so that staff can adjust the lighting environment. Security Members expressed differing views on this subject at the AGM. The Security Working Group have undertaken a detailed review of our current arrangements and made a number of practical recommendations which have been accepted by Management and the General Committee. Indeed, these have proven valuable in handling recent incidents in the Club. In this regard, Members’ cooperation is sought for the new past 11pm entry arrangement, effective 1 May 2015. Details are in WOK and elsewhere in the Magazine. Use of Existing Floodlights on the Ground These may be used upon request at the weekend. And the ever popular Sun Lawn is once again available for a kick-about, etc. I trust Members find this information useful and if they wish to follow up any specific issue, please contact either myself or the General Manager. Enjoy your Club! Robin Gill President 2 GM’sColumn Dear Members, My…how time flies when you are having fun! I celebrated the completion of my third year working here at KCC on 1 March! I can honestly say that during the past three years the time has really flown by as we have been very busy with various activities in and around KCC! I have appreciated all the Members who have taken the time to give me feedback on the issues that concern you, the Member and your family. It is this communication and feedback that I truly need to make sure we are paying attention to the issues that concern you. I am looking forward to completing the current staff-related renovation projects in mid-April and then we can concentrate on other exciting renovations in future years here at KCC. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome to my team Roger T Jones, our new Grounds Manager. Roger comes to KCC with a solid background from the turf industry and has seen stints in China, Vietnam and Thailand, and for four years, was at the Hong Kong Golf Club in the New Territories. You may have noticed the beautiful flower beds along the pathway to the pool as this is only one of many areas you will see more colours as you walk around the various areas of KCC property. So please welcome Roger to the team. One of the enjoyable activities during the Chinese New Year time is the annual Staff Party which was held on Monday, 2 March 2015. It is during this celebration that the long-serving staff are presented with their commemorative gifts. I would like to thank them for their dedicated service to the Club over the past years. I would also like to congratulate those staff who have reached their 5-year milestones. Those staff are: Name Department Yrs. of Svc. The race will be held at the Shatin race course on Sunday, 12 April 2015 and we will be located at suite #F630. This is always a fun day. Seating is limited so get your group together and book a table and enjoy a day at the races in a private suite. Guests are welcome. We have recently upgraded our Bowling Alley management system and scoring system to improve the users’ experience in our bowling alley. We have two new, modern consoles and two new monitors. This is now a state-of-the-art system so please come down to the bowling alley to see for yourself. Do we have your email address? The Club regularly sends out a number of emails about events and any information that is of concern to you, the Member. This is usually in the form of WOK (What’s On at KCC) but it can be a stand-alone news item. We do want to communicate with as many Members as possible so please make sure we have your up to date contact details, either for home or for your office. Please contact Wendy in the Administration office and give her your email address. Wendy can be reached at wendy@kcc.org.hk Points for consideration Parents are reminded that dependents and subscribers under the age of 18 are not permitted to bring guests to the Club and anyone found breaching the rules will be asked to leave the Club premises. Please discuss this rule with your children. Parents are also reminded that when signing in children under your auspices that if there is any misbehaviour or problem, it is the Member who signed the child in who will be responsible. As always, see you around the Club! Greg Hartigan CCM General Manager 3 MATCH REPORT – KCC CRUSADERS Sujanani and Garnett help Crusaders skirt past CCC CRICKET KCC Crusaders batsman Ravi Sujanani scored 82 and pace bowler Bill Garnett took three wickets to help their side skirt past the Craigengower Cricket Club by 13 runs at the Kowloon Cricket Club. H o w e v e r, C r a i g e n g o w e r Cricket Club batsman Matt Raf ter and all-rounder Jon Brunello both deserve a lot of credit as they made 67 and 50 respectively. Craigengower Cricket Club captain George Lamplough would have been pleased with his decision to bat first af ter Crusaders sk ipper Leigh Stewart was caught by Sam O’Malley off the bowling of Jacques Marshall for 23. Sujanani and Mike England made up for the early loss of Stewart with a 56-run partnership before England was caught by George Lamplough off the bowling of Gianluca Lamplough for 35. Sujanani and Roy Lamsam kept the runs flowing with an 83-run partnership, during which Sujanani brought Please follow us at: www.facebook.com/kcccricket www.twitter.com/kcccricket (follow @kcccricket) www.kcccricket.com 4 up his half-century, before Lamsam was clean bowled by Brunello for 41. Sujanani ended up making a magnificent 83 before he was given out lbw off the bowling of Elliot Andrews. Thanks to a quickfire 25 from Sussex import Chris Liddle, the Crusaders finished on 221/4 off their 35 overs. Marshall, Andrews, Lamplough and Brunello picked up one wicket apiece. Chasing 222 to win, Craigengower Cricket Club got off to a disappointing start as they were reduced to 75/5 thanks to some superb bowling from the Crusaders. However, just when it seemed the Crusaders were on the verge of delivering the knockout blow, Rafter and Brunello fought back with a 103-run partnership, during which both batsmen registered their half-centuries. Garnett managed to break the partnership before it spiralled out of control as he dismissed Brunello for a well-made 50. Garnett struck again just a few moments later as wicketkeeper Deepinder Singh took a brilliant catch to dismiss Rafter for a spectacular 67. Despite Marshall and George Lamplough amassing an unbeaten 30-run partnership, Craigengower Cricket Club still fell 13 runs short of their target. Garnett was the most successful bowler with three wickets, while Steve Pratt and Nishil Savalani claimed one wicket each. KCC’s newest import delivers big win over USRC KCC Crusaders’ Sussex import Chris Liddle is known more for his bowling than batting. However, during the highly-anticipated clash against USRC Millennium, Liddle stunned the vast amount of people in attendance shot. But, instead of connecting this time, Ahmad missed and wicketkeeper James Millington had no problems in completing the stumping and sending him back to the pavilion for 28. Iqbal ended up making a brilliant 65 before Chasing 167 to win, the Crusaders got off to a brisk start before captain Leigh Stewart was clean bowled for 14 by an absolute beauty of a delivery from Tanveer Ahmad. Mike England only made five runs before he was caught by Tanveer Ahmad off the bowling of Anas Khan. Ravi Sujanani managed to make 30 runs before he was caught behind off the bowling of Khan. Damien Kelleher mustered 11 runs before he was run out by Usman Khan. Caddy followed soon after as he was cleaned up by Tanveer Ahmad for a duck. Liddle and David Millington somewhat stemmed the bleeding with a 35-run partnership before both players miscommunicated during a run, which led to Millington being run out by Usman Khan and having to trudge back to the pavilion for four runs. by blitzing his way to an unbeaten 80 to hand the Crusaders a comfortable four-wicket win. While Liddle stole the spotlight for his match-winning knock of 80, USRC batsman Jawaid Iqbal deserves some credit for his valiant innings of 65. USRC captain Aftab Ahmad would have been mulling over his decision to bat first after he lost four batsmen with only 58 runs on the board. However, just like the match against Craigengower Cricket Club, the Crusaders allowed USRC to get back in the game as Ahmad and Iqbal amassed an 86run partnership, during which Iqbal brought up his half-century. It was Nishil Savalani who answered his captain’s call for a wicket as he tempted Ahmad into playing yet another big he was caught behind off the bowling of Ashley Caddy. Thanks to Iqbal, USRC finished on 166/6 off their 35 overs. Savalani was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets, while Caddy, Bill Garnett and Steve Pratt chipped in with one wicket apiece. With the Crusaders teetering at 139/6, Liddle walloped numerous sixes to carry his side to a four-wicket win and remain unbeaten on 80. Tanveer Ahmad and Anas Khan claimed two wickets each. Written by Bimal Mirwani http://battingwithbimal.com Twitter account - @BimalMirwani Bowling Night held on 11 February By Matt Barnett HOCKEY It was a chilly old Wednesday night, when 60 odd members of the Hockey Section, rather than tucking themselves into a nice warm bed (sensible option), decided to brave the elements and head down to the Club for a social game of Ten-pin bowling instead (opposite of sensible option). The stakes were very high from the outset. As the old saying goes it wasn’t about life or death, it was far more important than that. Pride was at stake. The ladies’ section up against the men’s, and on top of that the burning question as to whether the As, Bs, Cs or Ds would prevail and emerge victorious from this most grudgy of grudge matches. The pressure was intense. So refreshments were taken. like manna from heaven and refreshments were taken. All sorts of other awards, lucky door prizes and pomp and ceremony were planned for the night. But in the heat of the moment we forgot about doing all of them. Or did we strategically save them up for our next social? In scenes straight out of ‘Happy Days’, a leather-clad dude vaguely resembling Fonzi banged on the jukebox. The music started blaring, and we were away. Bowling without a care in the world. Refreshments were taken. Ladies’ coach Ahmed came down to show us how it was done, and promptly sent his first bowl into the gutter. The crowds cheered, and more than one person asked our resident Super Coach if “he needed the bumpers put up for his next bowl?”. Out of nowhere, enough food to feed the Chinese army arrived Who was the victor of the night? It may have been Asif bowling 166 or Declan somewhere near that. It may have been Canadian Don or men’s coach Jackie or C Team captain Hau, who brought his own ball with “Raging Inferno” inscripted onto it. Or was it Sam who with her 30 points handicap bringing home the spoils? Unfortunately someone wrote graffiti all over our amazingly professional score sheet, so the bottom line is we don’t have a clue who actually won on the night. departed was “when can we do this again?”. But suffice to say a thoroughly enjoyable time was had by youngsters and seasoned veterans alike, with the question on everyone lips as we all A big thanks to Wendy, Popeye, Eva, Bilal, Declan, Sam and plenty of others for helping organise the evening and helping out on the night. 7 HOCKEY 13th KCC Mini Hockey Tournament held on 8 March By Lisa Milliner 8 The KCC Mini Hockey Tournament is the highlight of the season for all our young and upcoming players. Always a fun and successful day, the 2015 tournament was no different. schools came to compete in the 13th annual tournament for our U8s, U10s and U12s. The KCC ground staff had the pitches looking superb and the surface was a dream to play on. Sunday, 8 March had been much anticipated by over 70 teams and it didn’t disappoint. With the sun breaking through the cloud, a record number of competitors and supporters from 20 clubs and KCC had 8 teams competing in this tournament, including four U8 teams! Our young players were all bright and early and eager to play. After a warmup on the sun lawn, all the teams met on the pitch to make a minute of noise for our friend who couldn’t be part of the celebrations. The tournament was hotly contested and KCC mini hockey is certainly producing some future stars under the guidance of Coach Ahmed. Our U8 teams consolidated their basic skills and had a fantastic time. They displayed great sportsmanship whether they had a win or a loss. Bob Barnett (U8 – div. 3) and Kyara Surtani (U8 – div. 1) were both awarded the ‘Best Sportmanship Awards’ in their divisions. Our U10A team was first in their division after three wins and a draw, and they went through to the final against Valley. They displayed outstanding hockey skills in their final to bring home an easy win. Raul Surtani was once again awarded ‘Best Player of the Tournament (U10)’. He has been awarded best U10 player for three mini hockey tournaments in a row! Our U12 teams were fearless in attack and strong in defense. Their talent was certainly obvious to all. 9 HOCKEY 13th KCC Mini Hockey Tournament Not only was great hockey on display but also our Women’s hockey section were painting faces and applying tattoos for our competitors. There were happy, painted faces in every direction, enjoying a magnificent day. There were also lots of prizes won in the lucky draws and, as usual, the KCC F&B staff had made some great food for our hungry participants. Many hours of organisation go into such a large event and our thanks and appreciation is extended to the organisers, coaches, umpires, parent helpers, sponsors and KCC staff. The tournament would not be such a success without this motivated army of helpers. Everyone had an exciting day and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Appreciation Another amazing hockey day was enjoyed by approximately 1000 people on our beautiful grass pitch, which was made possible by all the hard work and precious time invested by our experienced working team and efficient KCC staff behind the scenes as well as on the day, topped up by the enthusiasm and energy of our young players, their families, coaches, supporters, umpires, runners, scorers, face painters, MCs…this list goes on and on…. It is wonderful to be a part of such a vibrant sporting community in the heart of Hong Kong. A proud day for the KCC! The boys all knew the importance of this game and were up for it from the off as it was against a top U13 club side in HK boasting numerous national team players. The game started at a furious pace with SC looking to get an early goal, but KCC were defending and breaking well and not allowing SC any time in possession, James Chalk showing great leadership and organisation. SC broke the deadlock with a quick move down the left flank and squaring the ball for the onrushing player to tap in for a simple finish. A deflected shot led to a corner after some good setup play. Toby Loader floated in a good ball for William Smith to rise highest and header KCC back into the game. Halftime, the score was 1-1 with SC looking a little shell-shocked at the tempo and commitment shown by the KCC boys. The second half started in much the same fashion with SC having more of the ball but with KCC looking sharp on the counter and in possession. KCC then snatched a goal to put themselves ahead, after a strong tackle in midfield forced a drop ball which fell at the feet of Jordan, who hit a first time shot from outside the box, the ball looping over the keeper to send the KCC faithful into raptures. KCC then pushed for a 3rd to kill off the game, but this left them a little exposed at the back and on the break; SC punted the ball up field. The KCC keeper coming out to claim the ball, made a good save but inadvertently knocking the ball into the oncoming attacker and the ball deflected off him and dropped into the goal. KCC now looked panicked in everything they were doing, with a few nerves starting to show. Another sloppy clearance led to SC having a 1 v 1 and they took their chance and took a 3:2 lead leaving the KCC players stunned. Overall the boys played excellently giving the top side in HK their first real test at this level. Prior to this, they hadn’t been behind in a game and had high scoring results against all other opposition – a tough lesson to learn for the boys after putting everything into the game and coming away with nothing to show. Disappointing, to say the least, but a performance to be proud of. “Henderson” Team vs. HKFC KCC U13 vs. a HKFC team consisting of a combination of Tai Tam, HKFA and HKFC team took to the pitch for a late Saturday kickoff. After the disappointment of the South China game fresh in their heads, the boys were eager to put things right with a quality performance against a strong side. Everyone arrived in good spirits and after a solid warm up, the game kicked off with the KCC looking rampant and taking the game to HKFC. KCC gave the opposition zero time on the ball and were well organised by James “captain” 16 Chalk. KCC were soon in the lead after a forward ball into he feet of the HKFC striker, William Smith stepped up well giving the forward no time making a winning the tackle, then playing a sharp ball into Jake Ford who had time to turn and pick out a delightful ball into the forward right channel for Nicolia to run onto. Nicolia driving to the byline squaring the ball for Luke Dow to tap in. Half-time: KCC were 1-0 up. After the last game where the boys threw away a good lead, there were a few nerves and the boys looked a little anxious going into the second half. The second half started with neither team threatening either goal with any significant play, the battle for the midfield dominating the game. The KCC had a glorious chance to kill off the game, Eddie going through on goal 1v1 with the goalkeeper only to drive the ball directly at the goalkeeper for the simplest of saves. HKFC finally drew level with 6 minutes left on the clock. HKFC were now the side in ascendancy and with a free kick awarded on the edge of the box, HKFC drilled home a fine free kick to take the lead. For the second game in a row KCC had thrown away a lead. It was a superb winner from HKFC but a cruel blow to the KCC boys who had put in so much graft but again came away with nothing. A lesson learnt twice in a row, but one the boys must take on board and learn from. The boys will surely be looking for revenge in the upcoming games as we have to play both again. Annie Yeung Ladies’ B Team captain Final Game – C Team beat CCC 2 – 6, clinching promotion to Division 3 Left to Right: Brian Cambers, Gary Hamet, Raymond Lo, KC Shing, Eric Wong, Peter Hevicon, David Downs, William Wong, Raju Budhrani. Not in the photo: Martin Yeung, Fred Cheung, Andy Robertson, Dad A D and Bob Mehta who all contributed to the Team’s promotion. Thanks guys for your effort and great team spirit throughout the season. C Team promoted to Division 3 – “Ring The Bell” The team performed very well following last year’s team reconstruction and considering 18 we were playing two divisions up (4) compared to our Premier League division (6). The performance bodes well for C Team’s 2015 Premier League promotion goal. C Team held its promotion and end of season dinner on 14 February 2015 at Raymond Lo’s Hung Hom Japanese restaurant and, as always, a great time was had by all. Peter Hevicon C Team Captain 2015 Fat Choy Cup 2015 Fat Choy Cup was played on 21 February 2015. The event started with a lion dance performed by Ah Hung. Ah Hung’s professional performance impressed everybody, followed by the Fortune God (Thomas) giving away “red pockets” symbolising good luck to everybody. On behalf of the sub-committee, we would like to thank the support given by management team, performance by Ah Hung and Thomas, and all of you who contributed to the success of the day. Sanie and Annie Event Coordinators We had overwhelming response from players this year. There were a total of 48 players participated. The game format was 3 wood mix triples, random drawn teams, changing position after every 6 ends, totalling 18 ends. The result was: which, of course, was shared by everybody on the green. The game completed with the “spider”. This year’s target was two lovely sheep plush toy. The winners were Andy Robertson and Don McNeil. Winning team – Eric Yim, Dolores Leon, Peter Hevicon 1st runners-up team – Angus Wong, Anna Hamet, KC Shing 2nd runners-up team – Olivia Lui, Dad Allah, Timmy Kwong Each winning team won a bottle of wine 19 LAWN BOWLS Men’s B Team The Men’s B Team gained the title of the first runners-up in Triple League 2014 and the team will be promoted to Division 2 in next season. This is a great achievement of the team members as this is a second promotion following last year’s from Division 4 to 3. The success of the team was due to the improving performance of individual bowlers and most important of all, a superb level of team spirit which enabled us to win by 8 nil in 5 matches, even in the difficult matches like against CLP and HKPBC away, and getting a critical tie playing against HKYDT. So, congratulations to all B Team members – KK Yeung, Patrick Fong, Kenny Ng, Andrew Robertson, YW Li, David Leung, Jason Wat and Derek Lee. Special thanks also to Timmy Kwong, Don McNeil, Eric Wong, William Wong, Neil McCabe, Raju Budhrani and Angus Wong who had assisted the B Team as substitutes. James Keung, Men’s B Team Captain The Greens Convenor’s Report In the February/March edition, I introduced you to Roger T Jones, our new Grounds Manager. This month I am spotlighting our greens team who, under Rogers leadership, work hard behind the scenes, ensuring we enjoy good standard greens. Key issues raised by the LB sub-committee on 13 February 2015 Meet Jason Chan our Assistant Grounds Manager and Jason’s greens team 1. Members’ request for the rink direction to be the same on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday in order to give league and national competition players definite home advantage: Progress is being made. Jason Hung June Mabel Thank you Jason and the team for your good work. It’s highly appreciated. KCC Grounds Manager Roger T Jones’ February Greens Report RJ updated the sub-committee with his greens report highlighting the top green shading problems and his intention to introduce/trial a new grass, ‘Diamond Zoysia’ which he will trial on specified nursery strips. RJ advised that he is aware of the historical drainage problems and the Top Green re-construction project (grass or synthetic?) and is assisting the management with their preparation of a proposal for Members’ consideration. Peter Hevicon Greens Convenor 20 The grounds management team have advised that it would be better to review again in September. This will give Roger Jones and his team time to sustain the greens’ excellent improvements through the difficult spring period, and make further improvements through the summer period ensuring the greens can be the best they will be by autumn. If we can be patient a little longer, I think we will reap the rewards by not only playing in the preferred direction, but also on a surface that is in good condition on an ongoing basis. 2. New Bye-law 14.6 (greens lighting) The sub-committee agreed a review of bye-law 14.6 (greens lighting) was justified and will be followed up. 3. The score stands have been renovated with new chalk boards and new number plate rings will be fitted where needed. 4. New rink-end drinks boxes will replace the current rusting drinks boxes. 5. The greens ditches will be reconstructed in the summer. TENNIS CAMP EASTER 2015 Come and join our Tennis Camps this Easter! Starting from the second half of the season, we were unable to field a full team when team captain, Eunice Tong, was suffering from a wrist injury and top junior, Janis Lam, had to stop playing due to university exam preparation. As a result, we were unable to keep a clean sheet and had dropped three matches to Young Players’ teams. Before playing the last league match against Young Players 2, we scored the same point as Young Players 1 who were at the top of the table but we had one match in hand. We therefore needed at least 1 point from Young Players 2 in order to retain the title. The pressure was definitely on our side. The first player on court was Bubble Liu, the top ranking U15 player from Young Players 2 against Shina Leung, a former Junior Champion and member of HK Junior Ladies’ Team winning ‘World Junior Team Champion’ in 2005. Shina ensured the league title by a hard-earned 3-1 (9-11, 13-11, 11-9, 12-10) victory over Bubble. The on-form Vanessa Chu was the second on court, playing against her fellow full time athlete Karman Siu from HKSI. Vanessa gave a swift dispatch over Karman in straight games (116, 11-7, 11-8). In the final match, team captain Eunice Tong, despite her wrist injury, fought hard and won the match in a nail-biting 5 setters against reigning junior champion Tomato Ho (4-11, 11-4, 6-11, 11-9, 11-5). This is the second occasion our Ladies’ team won the league title for the 5th consecutive year and 13 league champions in 15 years. Well done, girls! Aaron Yip, Squash Sub-committee Member Leo Au sets record for longest ever match Junior Subscriber Leo Au, the World No. 33, broke the record for the longest professional squash match ever recorded en-route to claiming the ninth PSA World Tour title of his career at the Holtrand Gas City Pro-Am 2015 in Canada. Leo lifted the trophy following a tough 85-minute battle against Malaysian Muhd Asyraf Azan, coming from 2-1 down to win 3-2, in a 22 dramatic victory that came less than 24 hours after he won the longest match ever recorded – a mammoth 170-minute encounter against Canadian Shawn Delierre, the World No.54, in the semifinals. With the fifth game, which went to 16-14, lasting an incredible 78 minutes, saw Leo complete a total of over 300 minutes on court during the four-day tournament, averaging 75 minutes per day as he stormed to the title and earn his place in the annals of sporting history. Aaron Yip, Squash Sub-committee Member Squash Friendly Match – KCCM3 with PolyU Staff Club The PolyU Staff Club squash team visited our courts on 16 February for a friendly match with the KCC masters team. The playing standards of the PolyU team ranges from Division 6 to non-league players. Ours side has more or less matching a bilities from Division 5 to 16. The turn-up had been very s atisfactory. The court area was filled up with people, with 9 from the PolyU and 10 from KCC. Both Terbin Wong, the M3 convenor and Peter Fraser, the Squash Section convenor played in the match. The KCC team was solidly represented. The match kicked off with Paul Tsang for KCC and Wong WS for PolyU. The match was hard and close, and Paul came s econd after 5 games. David Brettell, our M3 number 1 e xpressed his gratitude to Victor Cheng for playing the PolyU number 1 Sammy Leung. He was right, the Victor and Sammy game was physically very demanding. Victor came on top to win 3-0. David went on another court to play the number 2 of the o ther team Albert Choi. Consistent play paid off for David to be victorious 3-1. Peter Fraser was not so lucky. He got a much younger and energetic opponent. Running fast on court is definitely an advantage. Despite playing all the trick shots, Peter could not outwit the runner but concede that the o pponent was better on the day. Anthony Kirk-Duncan, our M3 regular got the youngest player from the visiting team. Age difference is for sure in double digits. The years of experience was an advantage, that Anthony sent the youngster thundering around the court and emerged as the winner. On court 3 Terbin Wong got Carlos from PolyU playing a similar game. That was a clash of vintage squash. They relied on silky lob shots to build up advantage before pulling off the winning drop shot less than 1 inch above the tin. Elegant and adorable. Gentle as their games, they were also gentle on each other, allowing 45 minutes break after the first 3 games. After the extended break, they resumed and went to the fifth. Terbin went on top. Mark Chow played on court 2 with Daniel of the PolyU. Again, I would classify that as vintage squash too. They were not all the same. Deception was called upon to strengthen the drop shots in Mark’s game. It worked very well and Mark won. Clement Lo (KCC M3) and Ah Yan (the man KCC Div5) jointly defeated Grandy Fu of PolyU. We did not play doubles. Yan played the first game, feeding enough lengths for Grandy to do quite a bit of running around. We Gave Grandy an hour break before Clement finished him off 3-1. Grandy is a g entleman and a perfect guest. He did not show a sign of being much disadvantaged. T he fr ie ndly wa s wound up with KCCM3 winning 6-2 against PolyU Staff Squash Team. Individual Score (KCC vs. PoluU) Paul Tsang 2/3 Wong WS Victor Cheng 3/0 Sammy Leung Clement Lo 3/1 Grandy Fu David Brettell 3/0 Albert Choi Peter Fraser 0/3 Sai Anthony Kirk-Duncan 3/1 Johnny Mark Chow 3/0 Daniel Cheung Terbin Wong 3/2 Carlos Lo Overall 6/2 Clement Lo 23 Hong Kong Inter-Club Tenpin Bowling League 9th League Bowling Season 2014-15 TENPIN BOWLING Kowloon Cricket Club vs. Hong Kong Cricket Club Our final match of January 2015 was a home game against Hong Kong Cricket Club. Our illustrious captain Audrey was unfortunately not available but there was a welcome return, after a lengthy absence, for Andrew and Mike. So our line-up was Winnie and Mike, Paul and Andrew, and Chris and Vicky. In a very friendly contest, the HKCC bowled well and the match was probably a lot closer than our runaway win suggested. On Sunday, 1 March 2015, the Inauguration Ceremony of The St John Priory of Hong Kong was performed at the St John’s Cathedral on Garden Road. The status of Hong Kong St John Ambulance was elevated to that of a Priory, one of only eleven around the world. The ceremony was attended by the chief executive of the HKSAR, the Honourable C Y Leung and many other dignitaries from St John around the world. At the ceremony, Dr David Mok was invested Knight of the Order of St John, and was installed as the Prior of the Priory. Dr Mok has been an active member of KCC for over 40 years. A recording of the proceedings has been posted on YouTube. Club Management 24 Having said that, our team members did record some very good and also personal best scores, which on the handicap system certainly helps. So a good start to 2015 and at this moment KCC are lying second in the seven-team league. Mike Kennedy Friendly matches against Chinese Recreation Club 20 & 29 January 2015 SNOOKER The KCC Snooker Society played a doubles headed friendly match with the Chinese Recreation Club (CRC), starting at CRC for the 1st leg on 20 January. The clubs lined up with teams of 7 players to play a 10 frame schedule with 7 singles and 3 doubles matches. The players were drawn randomly against each other by the Convenor’s, Walter from CRC and Navin of KCC. The KCC line-up as follows: Navin (Captain for the Match), Adrian, Bennie, Ivan, Ping, Francis and Don P. The CRC has three snooker tables with one set up for ‘professional’ matches and where Hong Kong’s Marco Fu practices when he is in town. KCC started strongly with Navin, Bennie and Francis, all securing wins. 3:0 to KCC and things were looking good! Ping, Ivan, Adrian and Don P however had not read the script properly and all failed to close out their games, two of which were very close going down to the last couple of balls, but still KCC went into the dinner break, down by 4:3 frames. Navin and Bennie were first up in the doubles, but despite some good potting the CRC team closed out the game and took a 5:3 lead. Ping and Don P however found some missing form from the singles and pulled KCC back into the match, leaving Adrian and Ivan still playing. The game went down to the last 3 colours, but a fine straight blue, followed by a pink for KCC, meant the comeback was complete. Honours were even on the night, with a 5:5 draw secured, leaving everyone eager to resume battle at KCC on 29 January. Both teams made changes to their teams ahead of the 2nd leg at KCC. Albert the KCC Marker, as always, had KCC’s 3 snooker tables brushed, ironed and in tip-top shape as the players descended onto the green baize for another night of potting, snookers and one or two flukes!!! The KCC line-up as follows: Navin (Captain for the Match), Adrian, Bennie, Ivan, Patrick, John and Tommy. With the random draw again made by the Convenor’s, and the same 10 frame format agreed, the action began. Bennie, Adrian and John soon had KCC up 3:0 in the singles (sounds familiar!), same as the 1st leg at CRC. This time, however, KCC on home turf were feeling confident and Tommy and Patrick soon had KCC up 5:0. Navin, however, had to be the unluckiest person of the night playing the luckiest! After losing count of the number of flukes achieved by his opponent (probably a Guinness World Record in one frame!) KCC lost their 1st frame of the evening. Ivan was also unlucky in his frame, but KCC were still taking a commanding 5:2 lead at dinner break. As always, the KCC F&B team laid on a superb spread of curries, all topped off with the signature apple crumble, so feeling exceedingly full, the teams descended on the Sanctuary again 25 good break himself to leave KCC up by 28 points with only a possible 18 left on the table. Feeling charitable, Adrian gave back 5 points with a misplaced safety shot, however John was not so benevolent and potted a long pink to secure the frame for KCC as well as the match, which KCC won 6:4 overall. for the double matches. CRC lost a player so with a slight change in the format we played 2 doubles matches and the Convenors lined up for an additional singles. Navin was again unlucky in this match, but the lead was now down to 5:3. Patrick and Tommy were next up and a nail-biting match ensued, which went down to the last few colours, however CRC held their nerve and the lead was cut back again to 5:4. John and Adrian were now under pressure. The CRC players were methodical and taking no risks, opened up a 20 point plus lead. A solid 19 break by Adrian dragged this back and John was now in the zone, sinking some good pots and making a The KCC team is now looking forward to the start of the 2015 Hong Kong Inter-Club Snooker League which will start soon and run to the end of this year. A total of seven clubs are participating and it should be a great opportunity again for the KCC players to enjoy some competitive snooker. Adrian Townson Snooker Committee Representative A fond farewell to Tommy Tam 2 February 2015 it is where he met many new friends of varying ages and backgrounds – a true camaraderie that has enriched his life. The KCC Snooker Society bid long-time player and friend, Tommy Tam a fond farewell and wished him all the best for his retirement, with a Champagne ‘Send-off’ in the Sanctuary, followed by a meal. Many old and new faces were in attendance. Tommy has been involved in the Snooker Society since his first becoming a KCC Member in the early 90s. From his first day of membership, his sponsors Eric Barnes and John Greene introduced Tommy into the Sanctuary and it was 26 quickly learnt that Tommy had a good eye for snooker and was proficient in English billiards. Tommy quickly settled in as a regular in the Sanctuary and as well in other KCC activities, including long service on the Snooker Room Committee. Tommy once confided to one of his sponsors that the KCC and, in particular, the Sanctuary gave him something to look forward to at the end of a long working shift fighting crime. A welcoming place to go to – good food and wine, and restaurants. Besides, it is cosmopolitan, and Is it that same and sincere sense of camaraderie and trusting friendship that Tommy exudes to his fellow Sanctuary members that we all like…or…is it Tommy’s well-honed skills and neutral stance as a criminal investigator that we all like? Only some of us will ever know! We wish Tommy a long, happy and healthy retirement and hope and expect to see him on the green baize again in the not-too-distant future! Adrian Townson & John Greene 2015 Hong Kong Inter-Club Snooker League The KCC Snooker Society will play a total of 10 fixtures in the 2015 Hong Kong InterClub Snooker League between March and December, home and away against the other five teams; Chinese Recreations Club, Craigengower Cricket Club, Hong Kong Club, Hong Kong Country Club and the Kowloon Tong Club. The match format consists of four singles matches, followed by two doubles matches. 2015 Hong Kong Inter-Club Snooker League – First Match vs Kowloon Tong Club (away) The KCC Snooker Society commenced the Inter-Club League with an away fixture at the Kowloon Tong Club on 10 March 2015. The KCC Team consisted of Bennie (Captain), Francis, Ping, Adrian, Ivan and Don P. After the Captains had completed the draw for the singles matches, Adrian opened the scoring for KCC taking a very tight frame on the black ball with a fine cut in the top pocket. On the other table, Francis was not so lucky and went down narrowly to the Kowloon Tong Club Captain. Ping, surprisingly, then lost another tight but scrappy frame on the black ball leaving Bennie to claw KCC back level, which he did in style, so with all the singles complete, it was delicately poised at 2:2 heading into the interval. The refreshments seemed to spur KCC on and with Ping and Ivan / Bennie and Don P pairing up the doubles matches commenced. Ping and Ivan quickly opened up a lead and despite a fine comeback by KTC, they held on to take the frame. A successful conclusion to the match now rested on Bennie and Don’s shoulders. They took a solid 20-point lead into the final colours and eventually ran out comfortable winners. KCC had won its opening fixture in the League 4:2 and secured the 3 points for the win. Next up is another away fixture at the Hong Kong Country Club in early April. Adrian Townson Snook-a-thon Dear Members I have not forgotten to inform you all of how your generous donations were used after the Snook-a-thon. – Don McNeil Two years ago the Snooker Society held a 24-hour Snook-a-thon in order to raise funds for Po Kok Primary School, a local non-Chinese speaking school in Happy Valley. The children who attend the school come from many different nationalities and most families are of working class or very low income group. They do not have the many privileges/opportunities that KCC children take for granted at their schools or homes. Due to the back-numbing hours the snooker players put in on the tables and the kind sponsorship of the Members, the Snooker Section was able to raise enough funds to purchase 11 iPads for the schoolchildren’s use. The school’s Chinese Curriculum section with the aid of an app creator, created a specially designed Chinese learning app in which the children are able to read and write Chinese characters. Also the students can learn to listen to and speak Cantonese using the same app. This app has been so successful and effective that our students are winning awards in the local annual speech festival. Plus, Po Kok Primary School won the Hong Kong Information Communication Technology Best Digital Inclusion silver award. These are great achievements for our school in such a short period of time. From the photos you can see how the students are learning the correct order in which to write Chinese characters or be corrected via the iPad if the student makes an incorrect stroke. The iPads are not solely used for the Chinese lessons but across all studies: English, Mathematics, General Studies, Visual Arts etc. Again, I would like to thank all the kind members who donated to make a huge difference in the lives of these underprivileged children. Also, a big thank you to the snooker players who gave up their time to ensure there was always a snooker player on the table through out the 24-hour period. The players were: Tommy Tam, Mike Pomfret, Navin Ahuja (who just flew back on the Saturday morning), Don Poon, C.J. Panjabi, Tim Parkinson, Ivan Leung and Don McNeil. Thanks again, till the next challenge!!! Snooker Society 27 Good year for the KCC Badminton Team in 2014! BADMINTON By winning ALL the home and away games, we have already won the First Inter-Clubs Badminton League even with one remaining away game yet to complete. Furthermore, our Team has also secured our first win in the knockout round of the D Division Hong Kong Badminton Association League Game. Although we got knocked out by a much younger team in the second round, team KCC has attracted a lot of attention that hasn’t existed before! We have also sent out two of our best players, Anoop and Coach Liew, to participate in the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals “Full Strike” Charity Badminton Tournament. The objective of the tournament was to raise funds for TWGHs Support Scheme for the Elite Sport and Art Students. We have successfully won the first round on 8 March. There are still a few more rounds before KCC Team may be seen on the final day on 15 March. We fielded a team of 12 men and women players ranging in age from 10 to 80+. new table was put into use, and with the addition of new dividers and flipover score cards, the layout looked very professional. We are having a lot of fun and continue to invite you, the Members, and offsprings, to join in, particularly the youngsters who we hope to see more of. We have secured additional coaching sessions and updates were sent our to our Table Tennis Family. We came a decent second, ever yone playing to a good standard with some close results against a team who train professionally every week. We, on the other hand, were shor t of some of our regular players who were out of town or not available. Of significance was the inclusion of 10-year old Raul Surtani* into the KCC team. Raul played a very strong opponent of a similar age who is being actively coached in China. We hope Raul will continue to develop his obvious talent further and participate in upcoming matches. He is exactly the type of player we hope to see more of as he represents the future for KCC. Well done, Raul. The only clear winner was our veteran, Uncle Man, who is an inspiration to us all. Congratulations! The event was very well organised and thoroughly enjoyed by the participants and quite a few spectators alike. The 34 Martin Labrum Social Table Tennis Group * Unfortunately on 3 March, Konnie, mum of Raul, passed away. This lovely and pleasant lady will be sadly missed. God bless her soul and our heartiest condolences to her family. As always, my thanks first and foremost to a wonderful, enthusiastic and able-bodied team for three hours of entertainment, to Kishu for his organisational skills and to the KCC staff for bringing the event together under Maverick’s supervision. A big thank you also to Varuna for helping out with the scoring. I am pleased to say the Table Tennis Group is upholding the finer KCC traditions of fair play and warm hospitality. Yes, these are Thera-Band Resistance Bands. These bands will help strengthen and elongate the muscle fibres. These also increase your flexibility tremendously. Below are two critical benefits of Resistance Band. FITNESS Benefit Elastic Resistance Provides resistance in multiple directions * Provides constant tension * Free-weight Resistance 1. Provides resistance in multiple directions Minimises risk of injury because resistance band provides resistance in multiple directions, which helps build balanced muscle strength. 2. Provides constant tension There is constant tension on resistance bands, allowing the muscles to work through a greater range of motion. Examples of resistance exercises using Thera-Band® Neck – Isometric cervical extension • Place middle of band around back of your head. • Grasp ends of band, and hold in front of head as shown. • Keep neck in a neutral position with chin slightly tucked inward. • Hold head and neck steady and do not allow neck to bend. • Extend elbows, stretching the band in front. • Slowly return and repeat. Pic: http://www.healthyback. com/products/Milliken-medical/ Theraband/1260 Shoulder – Lateral raise • Stand on elastic. • Hold elastic in both hands. • Begin with arms at sides. • Position palms forward. • Slowly lower and repeat. How can it improve our health? 29 April 2015 – 2pm, Fincher Room (12:30pm for lunch – The Boundry Café) Using Functional Medicine to determine Imbalances, and the Triggers to your disease and whether its going to return after Remission by Miles Price, Clinical Nutritionist & Functional Medicine Practitioner Functional Medicine aims to identify the root cause or trigger, to disease and dysfunction within the body, and then apply naturopathic methods of healing and support. Using ‘Metabolic Typing’ and ‘Biosignature Modulation’ modalities, Miles is able to customising nutrition, according to our metabolism. By Marilyn Cheung Our bodies are very sensitive instruments, which can perceive subtle energy that cannot be sensed through our other five senses. Energy healing works with this subtle energy field, to carry out clearing, balancing and repairing of our energy system, so we can achieve wellness. Concepts of energy flow can be found in many ancient traditions, and there has been renewed interest in energy healing recently. During his talk Miles will discuss functional medicine and the testing used to help patients determine their triggers or imbalances, which contributed to their disease. Information will be posted on the KCC notice Board and also in the Club Magazine Please note the May dates.
