PRESIDENT’S
REPORT
As President of Netball North Harbour it gives me
pleasure to present the 64th Annual Report on behalf
of our members.
All sports organisations are facing unprecedented
challenges and I wish to acknowledge the significant
contribution to netball that all sectors of our netball
fraternity have made. Managing an organisation of
this size requires an enormous amount of work by
both employed staff and voluntary personnel. As
President I have been very fortunate to work closely
with all the staff and many of our volunteers who
contribute tirelessly to make certain Netball North
Harbour runs successfully.
The staff of Netball North Harbour, with Lynette Brady
as our Director of Netball and Operations, provides
an outstanding service and I want to acknowledge
the contribution that each staff member is making
as the organisation constantly moves forward into
an increasingly professional management model.
Netball North Harbour must continually strive to
get more people playing netball more often; to
provide pathways for players, coaches, umpires and
administrators; to meet the demands for increasingly
higher quality facilities; and to have good business
models and relationships with our Zone and also
with our sponsors, so that the organisation remains
financially viable.
Our volunteer workforce includes the Games
Committee
which,
under
Michelle
Newton’s
leadership, works hard to ensure the game is well
organised and runs smoothly. The challenges are
many but the success is obvious by the number of
teams and individuals who continue to participate
in our Netball North Harbour competitions. Also, I
wish to acknowledge our Umpires Committee and
Umpire Coach/Assessing Panels at all levels, who
work tirelessly not only on their own individual
commitment to providing up to date umpiring skills for
our games, but who also coach, assess and encourage
up and coming umpires at every level of competition
during the season. The Technical Officials, under the
co-ordination of Judith Downer, are another voluntary
group at Netball North Harbour who are constantly
upskilling and then using these skills when appointed
to attend local, National and International games as
Bench Officials or Statisticians.
At this point I would like to acknowledge our two
International Umpires, Yvonne Morgan and Fay
Meiklejohn, who have both decided to retire from
international competition at the end of this year. They
have been amazing to watch on International and ANZ
Championship games and I hope they will continue
to umpire and coach other umpires at Netball North

Harbour and pass on their considerable knowledge
and expertise.
The Board, under the leadership of our new Chair,
Carole Maddix, is continuing to apply its considerable
and wide-ranging skills in setting up and reviewing
new and existing policies, and this year arranging
with Harbour Sport to focus on implementing a new
strategic plan for our guidance in moving forward.
In finishing, I wish to congratulate our NNH U19 team,
coached by Jan Lundon, who won the National U19
Age Groups Championships against Dunedin at the
Trusts Stadium in early July. The 2016 U19 team
will be working towards defending this title. Also,
congratulations must be extended to our National
Championship Team, coached by Yvonne Willering
and assisted by Jan Lundon, who came Runners Up
against a very strong Wellington side. This was the
last time the National Championships will be played,
however, I hope in the immediate future our talented
players will still have a top competition where their
talents can be recognised and applauded.

CHAIRMAN’S
REPORT
2015 has been a very busy year with many successes,
challenges and new opportunities.
Returning to Netball North Harbour this year
completed the loop of where my passion for our
game started many years ago. I have valued the
opportunity to reconnect with past members, build on
the superb work of previous boards and establish new
relationships and opportunities with our stakeholders.
I am delighted to present the following summary of
the NNH Board’s activities and results for 2015.
To further strengthen and enhance our board, we
were pleased to be able to appoint Claudine Osborne
in March and Natalie Tabb was appointed in May to fill
the elected board member position left vacant from
the Annual General Meeting.
The role and responsibility of the board is to
govern, determine strategies, policies and financial
arrangements of and for NNH. The board has four sub
committees to provide advice to the board on high
performance, finance and risk, HR and judiciary. The
composition, powers, functions and procedures of the
sub committees are outlines in the Terms of Reference.
The Finance and Audit sub-committee meets at least
3 times a year and is responsible for overseeing the
budget, audit and risks. High Performance was tasked
with reviewing and recommending any changes to the
representative programmes, regulations and policy.
This year, the Judiciary sub-committee has been on
hand to provide advice, guidance and clarification to
the Director of Netball. Lastly, the HR sub-committee
has had a busy time ensuring all employment and
legal obligations were managed correctly.
An initial focus for the board this year was to continue
working on the Building and Site Development plan
that was presented to the board in 2014 by previous
Chair, Mark Abbot. A cost-effective solution is being
developed to oversee the water damage to the
building and will require the board to work with
building experts to provide a report on the full extent
of the damage, options on the types of repair work
to be undertaken, the length of time to complete
and the costs involved in such a major project. The
plan also includes undertaking a feasibility study on
our existing infrastructure and potential new land for
development. We want to ensure that our facilities
are fit for purpose and continue to best serve our
community.
In July, the board held a planning day to begin the
initial steps to develop a new strategic plan. The board
invited key stakeholders and senior management staff
to contribute their thoughts and views on the future
of Netball North Harbour. Kevin O’Leary from Harbour
Sport facilitated the day and will continue to work
with the board in capturing the key findings that will
help shape the new strategic plan
We have completed an overview of our representative
regulations
and
policies,
reviewing
powers,
accountabilities and responsibilities. This process also
involved undertaking general governance duties of
reviewing and updating policies, terms of references
and memorandums.
Highlights from our representative season, has been
the U19 team winning the Netball New Zealand National
U19 title, our NNH NC team came runners-up at the Lion
Foundation National Championship and our other age
group representative teams for their successes both on
and off the court. I had the privilege of attending some
of the tournaments and was extremely proud to see
and receive positive feedback on the way our teams
conducted themselves. Congratulations to Yvonne
Morgan who attended as an umpire at the International
Worlds Netball Championship in Sydney this year.
With changes to the National representative competition
for 2016 as directed by Netball New Zealand, will have
challenges for the organisation. The board is committed
to ensuring that our High Performance Development
programme is not jeopardised in any way and continues
to provide ‘Pathway to the Podium’ for our up and coming
talented players, umpires and officials.
At Netball North Harbour, we are extremely fortunate
to have the support of our great ‘Nettie’ volunteers
who help deliver the game and many successful events
staged during the season. The outstanding contribution
and commitment of the Games Committee and
Umpires Committee is greatly appreciated. I would also
like to acknowledge and thank our Service Award and
Life Members who are still giving their free time to help
out when asked. You are all truly inspirational.
The board would like to acknowledge our major
sponsor, AMI, who announced in September that their
partnership with Netball North Harbour will come to an
end in March 2016. Over the last seven years, AMI has
been a corner stone sponsor for this organisation. On
behalf of the members, I extend our heartfelt thanks
for your generous contribution and support to netball.

incredibly fortunate and thankful for your generous

I’m fortunate to lead a committed board who work incredibly
hard for this organisation. To the elected members, Jill

Tanya Hadfield, Anne-Maree Broom and Claudine Osborne,
thank you so much for your support and dedication to the
game we love.
Sincere thanks to Lynette Brady and her team of
amazing professionals at Netball North Harbour. You
were tasked with a significant workload this year and
delivered to an outstanding level.

Harbour.

Helen Schulz – President: Helen has been involved
with Netball North Harbour since her early
playing days in 1973. Helen played mid-week and
Saturday netball and then began umpiring, also
coaching her daughter’s various netball teams
and becoming involved as a Bench Official. Helen
has been the Convenor of NNH Umpires Association since
2003 and President of Netball North Harbour for nearly three
years. Previously Helen served 9 years on the Netball North
Harbour Board and 6 years on the Netball North Board (from
where she was selected as a member of the Interim Steering
Group for GANL in the formation of the Mystics Franchise).
Helen is the recipient of a NNZ Service Award and a Life
Member of Netball North Harbour.
Carole Maddix – Chairperson: Carole is a Director
and Shareholder in family businesses. She has
been involved in Netball for a number of years
in a variety of roles from Player, Coach, Umpire
and Administrator at Centre and Regional level.
Served 9 years as elected board member on
the Netball New Zealand board and is presently the NNZ
Appointed Board Member to the WBOP Zone. Carole is an
Executive member of the Oceania Netball Federation. Was
awarded a NNZ Service Award in 2012.
Tanya Hadfield: Tanya has been on the Board a
NNH for 5 years, returning to Netball after being
involved as a player at a high level in her younger
years. She is North Shore born and bred and
currently holds the role of Chief People Officer at
Partners Life located in Takapuna. In her previous
role as Executive General Manager of People and Culture at IAG
NZ, Tanya led a large team with responsibility for the delivery
of an integrated people strategy across brands including State
Insurance, NZI, AMI and Lumley. During her four years with
IAG Tanya was heavily involved in the successful acquisitions
of the AMI and Lumley Insurance businesses - leading the
people stream from Due Diligence through to Integration.
Tanya has previously held a number of senior HR roles within
the Financial Services Sector in NZ and abroad.
Lyn Barr: Lyn has been involved with Netball
North Harbour since 1970 as a player and in recent
years a Coach, Games Committee Member and
was involved in our Premier 1 & 2 Competition.
She has had many past volunteer roles with our
Development Committee and Youth Academy
Squads and Coaching Representative teams. This year Lyn
managed the NNH U17 / 1 team.

Jill Hayman: Jill has been involved with
Netball North Harbour for over 12 years as a
Representative coach/manager, a social player
and is still an active NNZ accredited umpire
for Premier / Club / College teams. Jill is also a
member of the NNH Board Finance Committee
and Chair of the Judiciary committee as well as managing
the finances for the NNH Umpires committee. With her 2
daughters still involved in Club netball, she is often found
on the side-lines as well. Outside of netball, Jill works as a
Software Test Manager at Air New Zealand.
Anne Maree Broom: Anne-Maree is a qualified
accountant and member of NZICA. Anne-Maree
comes from a commercial and not-for-profit
background working in various financial
management roles over the years. She has
also gained solid experience of the netball
environment through working at Netball New Zealand for
over four years. Anne-Maree is a keen supporter of netball
and enjoys contributing to the netball community as a
member of the Netball North Harbour Board.
Claudine Osborne: Claudine is currently a Director
in a multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy
based in Albany. She has extensive experience
in all aspects of resource management planning
and environmental engineering, having been
involved in the policy, regulatory and consultancy
fields of her profession over the last 20 years. Outside of
work Claudine is kept busy by her three very active children
who are involved in numerous sports. She is an enthusiastic
supporter of netball and spends many hours down at the
Netball North Harbour courts supporting her youngest
daughter who is passionate about netball.
Natalie Tabb: Natalie grew up in Blenheim where
in her school years played netball enthusiastically.
She studied law at Auckland University and has
worked as a lawyer in Auckland for 18 years.
Natalie has two children aged 10 and 5, the older
of which is a passionate netballer and her mum
says she shows much more skill than she ever did. When not
working Natalie spends time playing with her children and
trying to get her unruly garden under control.
DIRECTOR OF NETBALL
& OPERATIONS
It is with pleasure that I present the 64th Annual
Report, marking another year of growth and
achievements for Netball North Harbour on a number
of levels.
Our ambition for AMI Netball North Harbour to be a
vibrant and industrious Centre is evident on a daily
basis for almost twelve months of the year and is
recognised as a community facility catering for a
number of community groups and sports. I would
like to extend my thanks for the support the netball
and wider community has extended not only to
me personally but more importantly Netball North
Harbour as a whole throughout the year.
A highlight for the season was our Under 19 team
winning the Netball New Zealand Under 19 Age
Group Championships at Trusts Stadium with Popua
Aleamotua, Kate Burley, Faamu Ioane and Michaela
Sokolich-Beatson identified in the tournament team,
followed by our National Championship team finishing
2nd to Wellington at the final New Zealand National
Netball Championship tournament in Wellington.
Sponsors play an important role, and it is difficult
to successfully run our business without their
financial support. I would like to acknowledge our
partnerships and sponsorships that are pivotal to the
success of our organization. AMI Insurance, as our
naming rights sponsor, have once again surpassed
their sponsorship agreement and have supported
competition days with their initiatives plus they have
provided our prizegivings with substantial giveaways.
Our elite sponsor, Barfoot & Thompson along with
our community partners: KPMG, Benefitz, SAS Sport,
JustWorkout, Warehouse Stationary and Mai FM are a
much valued group of organizations.
We were again successful in 2015 with receiving
funding from Lion Foundation and NZCT supporting
our operations with funding for some of our salaries.
Additional operational funding has been received
from Infinity Foundation, North and South Trust Ltd,
Trillian Trust, Constellation Communities Trust Ltd,
Pub Charity, Foundation North and First Sovereign
Trust Ltd during the year for utility costs, equipment,
game and representative expenses. Your support
allows us to administer and grow our business, whilst
providing a high level of service and standards to all
our community stakeholders.
Thanks to Auckland Council who with their generous
support we have been able to complete the
refurbishment of the building, ensuring that we are
able to continue to present a building that is fit for
purpose. A special thank you to the Kaipatiki Local
Board for supporting Netball North Harbour in
working with Auckland Council.
Managing an organisation of this size requires
and enormous amount of work by both paid and
voluntary personnel. In my role, I have been very
fortunate to work closely with all the staff and most
of the volunteers who work tirelessly to make certain
Netball North Harbour runs successfully.
Our sport, like all other sports, is absolutely
dependant on the contribution of our volunteers,
clubs, schools, coaches, umpires and the many parent
supporters who fill roles such as providing transport
to games, managing teams, umpiring, supporting
teams financially, or just being on the side line to
show their support. To all of our players, coaches,
managers, umpires, match officials, administrators,
club and school coordinators, Sports Injury Clinic
staff, Maori Wardens and our executive committees
– we are grateful for your ongoing commitment and
passion to netball and most importantly your loyalty
to AMI Netball North Harbour. Netball North Harbour
is privileged to have this group of professional and
committed people involved in our game.
I would also like to recognise and thank all staff for
their ongoing hard work and support during the year,
when you work in sport it is never a 9-5 job. Not only
have they ensured the slick delivery of netball to our
community they have had to contend with additional
workload associated with the changing landscape of
the netball delivery model in New Zealand.
AMI Netball North Harbour is fortunate to have
a strong governance board with a key group of
individuals bringing a wealth of experience. Led
superbly by Chair, Carole Maddix, the board continue
to focus on strategic outcomes, ensuring that this is
applied across all our operations. I would personally
like to thank the board for their passion and
commitment to our netball centre. They continue to
give excellent leadership to both the organisation
and myself personally in my role.
In conclusion, something for you all to think about
as we move into the next phase for AMI Netball
North Harbour. The impact of all the challenges and
changes that we have had to face, and still have to
face will continue well into the future. The challenge
for Netball North Harbour will be to remain steadfast
in our principles of providing the game of netball to
our members by the most efficient methods possible
while ensuring that netball is accessible to all. You
are all key in enabling us to meet this challenge.

MESSAGE
Supporting the local community is something that’s
very important to AMI. With two contact centres and
14 stores across the greater Auckland region, four of
which are on the North Shore, AMI has a large presence
in the Auckland community and it’s important for us
to be able to give back to the community in which we
operate. AMI’s partnership with AMI Netball North
Harbour over the last seven years has allowed us to
do that. It’s been a productive and mutually beneficial
relationship, and one we’re extremely proud of.
The centre itself is a fantastic community resource used
by thousands of people each year, especially during the
winter netball season, and we’re pleased our support
has helped grass roots netball and the team at AMI
Netball North Harbour continue the great work they do
to provide a fantastic programme to the community.
Our sponsorship has always been about more than
just having our logo on the side of a wall or providing
funding. Together, with AMI Netball North Harbour
we’ve worked hard to add value to members of the
centre and create unique and memorable experiences
for the netball community, both on and off the courts.
Our aim has always been to engage with the netball
community in relevant and meaningful ways, and
thank members for their continued support. Some of
our activity over the past seven years includes our
AMI On-Court Crew, AMI Hero campaign – combating
sideline abuse, photo competitions, at game
competitions, giveaways, promotions and community
days. In 2015 our AMI crew were back on court
helping to enhance the on-court experience through
our Winter Warm up Zone. Free soup, coffees, hand
warmers and beanies were given away to players and
supporters to help combat the cold weather and make
standing on the side-lines a little more pleasant. Apart
from merchandise and ticket giveaways throughout the
season, members who were also AMI customers had
the chance to receive extra special offers including VIP
hosting at a Mystics game, and an AMI rewards card
which they could redeem for free hot drinks and food
throughout the season. It was a great opportunity for
us to utilise our sponsorship to add extra value to AMI
customers.
Overall it was another great year in our partnership
and we’d like to take the opportunity to thank the
team at AMI Netball North Harbour, all the volunteers
and people behind the scenes, for their help to make
this such a success. This will however be our last year
as principal sponsor as we realign our community
investment to focus on supporting initiatives that help
make New Zealand a better, safer place to live. AMI
has been helping to keep New Zealanders safe and
protected for almost 90 years, and is something that
will become more prominent through our community
partnerships as we look for opportunities that help keep
our customers and communities safe and protected.
AMI is delighted to have been able to invest in the
Auckland Netball community and end the sponsorship
on a high note. We wish the team at AMI Netball North
Harbour all the best for the future, as they continue to
make a great contribution to this fantastic Kiwi Sport.

MEMBERSHIP
AMI Netball North Harbour has an active membership
of over 16,000 players, coaches, umpires, managers
and administrators.
Winter netball is played from March to September
with approximately 10,000 visitors through the netball
centre. 2015 was the official launch for the ANZ Future
Ferns for our Year 1 & 2 players. Social netball is played
in six week blocks throughout the year and during a
full week at the centre we can cater for 20,000 plus
netballers and supporters. Our membership is made
up of all ages and motivations, some are serious
competitors striving for elite achievements whilst
others are here for social games or to participate for
the sheer love of the game.

COMMUNITY
PROGRAMMES
Netball North Harbour continues to ensure that
there is a core focus on the delivery of development
programmes, competitions/events and clinics that will
meet the needs of our netball community.
Our 2015 school holiday programmes saw over 850
children participate and engage in netball activities
under the tutelage of our enthusiastic and committed
coaching team. The availability of player extension
clinics, talent development programmes, one on one
coaching and coaching in schools sessions have seen
our development staff engage with many schools,
parents, coaches, teachers and players within our
community.
The Fuji Xerox netball experience day ran for its second
year and once again saw 50 Year 9 students participate
in a skills and development morning with HNH High
Performance and Mystics players. This is a wonderful
opportunity for our youth players to work alongside
top players and receive some specialist coaching from
their role models. The ANZ FutureFERNS programme
was officially launched for our Year 1 & 2 players with
24 teams participating in the programme over 10 weeks
during the winter season.

umpiring in schools programmes.
The Netball North Harbour Community and Development
team are dedicated and committed to delivering and
meeting the needs of our netball community. We look
forward to another successful year of providing new and
exciting initiatives together with the continuation of our
regular programmes for our netball membership.

DEVELOPMENT
An ongoing commitment from Netball North
Harbour has allowed us to continually build on our
coach development, this year 500 coaches chose
to upskill and educate themselves by attending of
coaching courses.

One of the new initiatives being trialled at Netball
North Harbour in 2015/2016 is the Advanced
Student Coach programme put in place to help
educate and support talented student coaches
working in the school environment, These young
coaches will be given the opportunity to attend
Mystics training sessions and Club Super 14
premiere trainings and games and to be mentored
by Marcia Hardcastle and Michele Wallace. The
purpose of this programme is to give these girls
an overview of how top coaches work, plan and
prepare for trainings and games. Congratulations

Pilosi-Northcote College, Maddy Probert-Westlake
Girls High school, Rebecca Percy-Birkenhead

GAMES’
COMMITTEE
The 2015 Games Committee work alongside the AMI
Netball North Harbour staff to provide competitions
and tournaments for its membership. The delivery of
the game is the largest area of operation and covers
all competitions and tournaments.
The Club Premier Competition remains to be played
in the Onewa Arena on two separate nights. Premier
1 was played on Tuesday nights and Premier 2 on
Thursday nights. Other Club was played on Saturdays
at AMI Netball North Harbour. Due to increasing team
numbers the College Grades, the College Premier
competition was played on Wednesday afternoons
with Year 9 competition remaining on a Tuesday
night. All other secondary schools teams played on
Saturdays at AMI Netball North Harbour with the
Intermediate competition being played on Thursday
nights. The primary netball competition continues
to grow and was once again played Monday and
Wednesday nights here at AMI Netball North Harbour
and a Saturday competition at Westlake Girls High
School. The new Netball New Zealand Junior Netball
programme was trailed at AMI Netball North Harbour
early on Saturday mornings with a great turnout of
young girls and boys being introduced into our sport.
Our social competitions played in six 6 week blocks
with an average of 50 teams per block.
In conjunction with the Umpires’ Committee, the
Games Committee assists to oversee a volume of
players, umpires, coaches, administrators, parents
and supporters that play at the complex.
all its members to participate and contribute in Open
Forum Meetings. This enables club, college, intermediate
and primary personal, the opportunity to evaluate and
share their experiences from the current season. From
these meetings, the Games Committee take forward
recommendations for future planning. Whilst space
continues to be a challenge providing competitions to meet
the needs of all our membership, the Games Committee
uses all this valuable feedback to move forward for the
incoming year to provide a competitive season for all.
I would like to extend a huge thank-you to all of my
Committee, our President Helen Schulz and the board
for their hard work and support over the season. Under
the Games Committee we have an extended group of
volunteers who give generously their time and effort
for netball in many and varied degrees. We are always
looking for more volunteers so please visit the Netball
North Harbour website for further information.
Finally, I would like to thank all the staff especially Gail
Griffiths, Teresa Smeed and Vikki McColl for all their
hard work in making sure everything runs so smoothly.

PROGRAMME & TEAMS
High Performance Development Programme
The High Performance Development Programme
(HPDP) has now completed its second year.
Following on from 2014, three squads were selected.
Senior, Under 17 and Under 15 age groups. The growth
of the players who had been part of the programme
the previous year was apparent and it was exciting to
see the strength of this year’s squads.
Continued focus was placed on consistent application
of skill development throughout our weekly trainings
and in addition we actively sought out experienced
specialist’s in their fields, to work with our HPDP players
and coaches. Former Silver Ferns Leonie Leaver and
Sonya Hardcastle joined us for specialist shooting and
centre court sessions and Jo Coleman again shared her
Physio and Nutrition knowledge.
Dr Craig Harrison from AUT Millennium who specialises
in Excellence in Human Performance gave us a
completely new insight into fitness training.
The senior squad worked with Craig over three weeks
prior to Christmas and we piloted a new approach
to fitness where the players would develop their
own battery of testing protocols. The girls designed
specialist position related tests alongside video
analysis. They then followed subsequent written fitness
programmes over the holiday period and the results
when they returned and retested were outstanding.
This was an enlightening exercise with a different
process and approach to fitness and it was satisfying
to see players take ownership and apply themselves to
reach their own standards.
The U17 & U15 squads also took part in a battery of
tests designed to assess the girl’s fitness, with the
added focus of correct technique. Video analysis was
part of the exercise and follow-up squad sessions
viewing video coverage and discussion on the effects
of correct and incorrect technique, brought a new
understanding to the players.
We enjoyed having the sponsorship of JUST
WORKOUT this season. Just Workout sponsored all
our HPDP squads, providing inclusive squad workouts
and then spent time developing gym sessions with
netball related activities. Many of our players took
advantage of the sponsored gym memberships and
we are grateful to Jay, Terry and their team for their
time and passion to our programme.
At the completion of our programme this year we
held an in-house weekend for Senior and selected
U17 players and Invitation games against a travelling
Australian group, for the U17 & U15 squads.
The in-house weekend was a taxing one that provided
a mine of information for the players. Most sessions
were interactive and hands on and the common
comment I heard throughout the weekend was, “my
brain hurts” and “I’ve learnt so much”. For most it was
an experience they had not been immersed in before.
We are very grateful to have had the expertise and
enthusiasm of Noeline Taurua, former Magic Coach and
Assistant coach of the Mystics; Sue Emerson Unitec, Head
of Sport; Rob Gambolati, Unitec Sport; Gael Nagaiya, NNZ
Convenor of Selectors; Leonie Leaver, former Silver Fern
and our dedicated High Performance Development
Programme coaches.
Our Under 17 and Under 15 squads were too strong for the
travelling Australian group and to see the girls perform
with improved skills and composure was impressive.
Selection for our North Harbour representative teams
is now fiercely contested and we are improving our
national rankings. I believe this will continue as we
continue to up skill our players.
There have been many changes at NNZ and the Zone
level and these will continue to change. We will need
to keep adapting our High Performance Development
Programme alongside these changes so we stay
relevant. This will ensure we continue to grow our North
Harbour players, so they can be the best they can be.
We enjoy the close relationship we have with NH umpires
and thank Helen and her great group of umpires who
make themselves available throughout our programme

2015 has been a successful year for the AMI Netball
North Harbour representative programme with the
Under 19 team being crowned New Zealand Champions
and a 2nd placing at the National Netball Championships

HARBOUR UMPIRES
This year our focus has once again been on the
development of new umpires who are commencing their
pathway into umpiring and, at the same time, we have
made certain our more established umpires have been
given up to date coaching by current Coaching Panel.
Panel members attended compulsory NNZ workshops
prior to the 2015 season commencing so they were up to
date when the season began. This will also apply for the
2016 season commencing in February prior to the Super
14 competition when the new rules will be introduced.
As can be seen by the following results it has been a
successful season for all levels of umpires and I would
like to acknowledge the commitment and hard work
of our three Coaching Panels based at Netball North
Harbour. The NZ Panel, led by Simone May; the Zone
Panel, led by Binnie O’Neill; and the Centre Panel, led by
Lynn Bennett.
We have once again had a consistent number of
umpires pass the different levels of umpiring and it is
my belief that we have never had to fail a candidate on
their practical exam due to the extensive coaching they
have received from their Panel coaches throughout the
season prior to their practical exam.
I wish to thank the Umpires Committee – Irene Collins,
Judith Downer, Binnie O’Neill, Ann Tod, Jill Hayman,
Sharon Fraser, Lynn Bennett, and Ann Bourne, along with
Carole Maddix, our Minute Secretary, for their assistance
throughout the season. Thanks also to Simone May,
Leah Lazarus and Raewyn Vile as co-opted members of
our Umpires Committee.
Unfortunately we have to say farewell to Binnie O’Neill
who is moving north to Russell. Binnie has been with us
for a number of years and, as well as leading our Zone
Panel, Binnie has also coached our young Development
Squad umpires, (with the assistance of Katherine Kidd),
tutored our Zone Theory candidates, and is a member
of our NNH Bench Officials. We will certainly miss her
in all the fields she has assisted us with, as well as her
wonderful wisdom and calm expertise.
This year we were able to allocate our NZ umpires
to Premier 1 and 2 on a Tuesday and Thursday night,
along with some of our top Zone umpires to Premier 2
on a Thursday. We allocated to College Premier on a
Wednesday afternoon, however, this did prove difficult
due to the timing of the games and the level of umpires
required for these games. On a Saturday we were able
to allocate umpires to College Open A, along with the
Premier 3, Senior 1 and 2 (hour long games). We also
covered some teams in Senior 3, 4 and 5 in consultation
with various Clubs. (These 40 minute games are
required for examining our Centre Badge umpires.) We
will be reviewing our allocations and our Pathways, at
our first Committee Meeting in 2016.
As in previous years, Raewyn Vile ran fitness trainings
on a Tuesday night until Premiers began. These classes
are for all levels of umpires. Justine Osborne, Yvonne
Morgan and Ann Bourne ran our official YoYo tests for
our NZ umpires with results being forwarded to NNZ,
and Raewyn and Jill Hayman ran YoYo testing’s for Zone
umpires. The level to be gained was raised by NNZ for
the June testing and it now stands at 14.1 (previously
13.3) prior to screening for NZA, B or C, including
endorsements. Umpires applying for NNZ events (e.g.
U17, U19/23, NZSS, NZC) need to gain 14.5.
This year we ran two blocks of New Zealand Zone
Theory tutored by Binnie O’Neill and one block of New
Zealand Theory, tutored by Ann Bourne. The results
were 100% pass rate for New Zealand theory with
Teresa Smeed gaining the second highest mark in New
Zealand. Also Zone Theory had a 100% pass rate on
Paper 1, outstanding results.
The highlight of this year was to watch Yvonne Morgan
umpire the opening game at the World Netball
Championships in Sydney. A fantastic achievement in her
umpiring career and this has been a wonderful pinnacle
from which Yvonne later announced her retirement from
International umpiring. Our other IUA umpire at Netball
North Harbour, Fay Meiklejohn, has also announced her
retirement from International netball.
Netball New Zealand Chief Executive, Hilary Poole, paid
tribute to their contribution to the sport and said Fay and
Yvonne had inspired many aspiring young umpires and
she congratulated them both on their wonderful careers
and wished them all the best for their future endeavours.
No doubt we will continue to see them both around the
netball courts and hope they will continue to umpire at
Netball North Harbour and pass on their considerable
knowledge to our umpires.
In closing I wish to thank the staff at Netball North
Harbour for all that they do to encourage and support
umpires. Special thanks to Sharon Fraser who has
continued to encourage and coach Junior umpires to
sit the First Steps to Umpiring classes followed by their
Junior Theory. This year Sharon has passed 147 Junior
theory candidates - an amazing result – and a big group
for the Centre Panel to concentrate on coaching in 2016.

COMMUNITY UMPIRE
DEVELOPMENT
The role of umpire development for 2015 has seen
the community netball umpiring programme expand.
There has been a significant increase in junior and
intermediate students getting involved with umpiring
their peers and having the confidence to move to
higher levels of the umpiring pathway.
Working with the school netball coordinators to have
the umpiring programmes in their schools as well as
still offering the courses at the Netball North Harbour
has proved to be beneficial to all.
First Steps to Umpiring of which we ran seven blocks
this year, has allowed all participants the choice of
being able to have a good selection of times and
months of the year to be able to fit in with their own
busy schedules.
One day theory classes held during the April, July
and September/October school holidays have seen
us increase these programmes to both weeks of the
holidays. Practical sessions are now held on separate
days for all to put into practice what they have learnt
in the theory classes. The biggest improvement is the
participants gaining confidence and having fun with it
as well.
Question and Answer sessions in schools for the new

coaches and parents of junior netball players have
been very well received with everyone being able to
take an active part. Participants were able to re-enact
the rules to have discussion on, which provided a lot of
humour and entertainment.
Beginner Junior Whistler programme for Year 6 to Year
9 students is run over seven weeks at the beginning
of the year and the end of the year. This allows the
students to do practical umpiring with some theory off
season so that when the season does start, they are
ready to umpire as well as play for their schools.
Junior Whistler programme candidates are selected
from the Beginner Junior Whistler programme which is
run earlier in the year. These students are allocated to
primary teams weekly for two terms.
Many thanks to the schools who participated in this
programme as this then enabled us to help teams who
didn’t have umpires for the season. Coaching is given
every week and every umpire is supported by a buddy.
A number of them progressed towards the next step to
gain their Junior Award.

CENTRE
FACILITY UTILISATION:
2015 has seen the Netball North Harbour Facility
to continue to provide high quality facilities to our
netball membership, local community, sporting
organisations and corporate users. We have worked
with a number of new clients this year, both at
community and corporate level, hosting a variety
of events in the Onewa Arena and NNH Clubroom
facilities.
These events provide an opportunity
to showcase our multi-faceted facility, providing
exposure to a wider demographic. This in turn will
lead to increased hireage of our facility.
Many thanks to the continued support of our regular
hire groups, a number of whom have been utilising
our facilities over a number of years. It is pleasing to
receive repeat custom from new and existing clients,
with most already having confirmed bookings for
2016.
Balancing the use of the facility with Netball
programmes and that of community and corporate
hire can be a challenge at times but it is realised that
without the opportunity to generate hireage outside
of netball, we would not be able to maintain the
facility to its current high standard.
RENOVATIONS/MAINTENANCE:
Major refurbishments to upgrade the AMI Netball
North Harbour Facility were carried out this year,
with thanks to the Auckland Council Community
Facility Development Fund:
•
Refurbishment work included; painting inside the
clubrooms, new window coverings, bathroom
refit, flooring, sound and AV system, directional
signage, upgrade of furniture.
•
LED lighting replaced the existing lighting in the
Francesca Maria Zumba Experience

NZBCF Party in Pink Fundraiser
Arena which results in large savings on power and
also enhances the indoor facility to local netball
players and larger corporates and national codes.
As we are challenged with the upkeep of an ageing
building, our clubrooms continue to require a fair
amount of maintenance hours which comes with a
financial cost. All upgrades and repairs are kept to a
minimum where possible. The Facility Working Group
will be working on a short term and long term plan,
with the vision of sustaining our current asset and to
continue to maintain a high quality and safe facility,
both inside and outside.
We continue to be appreciative of the great service
that is provided to our members and visitors at the
centre through the Sports Injury Clinic team lead by
Jo Kitchen and our onsite caterers, Fernz Catering,
Rob and Jodi.
Peter Oswald (Grounds Keeper and Cleaner) continues
to work tirelessly for the good of the centre and we
thank him for his dedication and commitment. Also
thanks to Sue Truscott who handles the majority of the
court and facility bookings, accommodating everyone
in an efficient and timely manner.

NETBALL CHARITABLE
TRUST
Running alongside Netball North Harbour is a
registered charity called the Netball Charitable Trust.
The purpose of the Trust is to provide the AMI Onewa
Domain Netball Complex to the wider community and
to thereby provide opportunities for greater funding,
which in turn allows facilities for netball to enjoy.
The covered Arena is continuing to be successful and
that it is not only used for grades from primary through
to club but also by community hirers for major events
such as weddings, boxing and company professional
development days. The Silver Ferns continue to use
our Indoor facility for trainings at various times of the
year and was also used by various overseas teams
who have been visiting NZ.
I wish to take this opportunity of thanking my fellow
Trustees, the board and staff of Netball North Harbour

very important task of providing netball throughout

SPORTS INJURY CLINIC REPORT/
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
The Sports Injury Clinic at Netball North Harbour has
continued to provide world class medical cover on all
playing days and tournaments at the request of Netball
North Harbour and external tournaments throughout
the 2015 playing season. A sports doctor has been
present on both Thursday evenings and Saturdays.
This year regular specialised hand therapy was also
provided on Thursdays and Saturdays. A typical week
in the calendar year requires 38 hours of physiotherapy,
10 hours of Doctor time and 10 hours of hand therapy
in addition to administration and first aid and strapping
services. Data collection has continued and provides
our coaching workshops with update analysis of our
population of players and their risk factors.
The 2015 season saw an increase in staff required on
each game day due to the restructuring of the calendar
to include College Premier mid-week and a trend
towards more severe injuries in our younger athletes.
The service continues to be coordinated Jo Coleman
former Silver Ferns Physio and Dr Simon Mayhew current
Warriors, Kiwis and Olympic Sailing Doctor and who are
currently sharing the latest Sports Medicine and Science
Information and striving for best practice to ensure
Netball North Harbour is seen as a centre of excellence.
Jo presented to several groups of North Harbour
Netball coaches and umpires and clubs and high
performance athletes this year to ensure our collected
data information is shared with the coachforce staff
and high performance personnel to affect changes in
coaching drills and pre-season screening protocols.
Where possible seminars and strapping courses are
given or prescriptive documents are created for groups
such as our Junior Umpires. Further printed material is
developed and added to handbooks.

This season medical assistance was provided over
5 days of the week for 16 weeks of the year. It was
a steady year of less severe injuries and a record
ZERO Ambulance callouts. Ankle sprains continue to
dominate at 30% of all injuries with the hand injuries
coming a close second at 25%. This trend has not
altered in the 6 seasons of data collection but severity
and volume of the injuries is showing a downward
trend.
The group with the greatest percentage of injuries
were the Intermediate age group of year 7 and 8.
The common factors are poor footwear and landing

related problems. Some intervention is required here
via the school sports coordinators or coaches of this
group. Jo is working hard on developing a webinar
series to assist Netball North Harbour with delivery of
this information.
The staff of the Sports Injury Clinic love being involved
in the administration of quality care to the members of
Netball North Harbour and part of an amazing service
that provides both learning and research opportunity.
Appointing Physios to tour with rep teams and
involvement in the high performance programme have
been both effective and rewarding for all involved.
We are constantly evolving to meet the needs of the
members of the Netball North Harbour community,
share as much knowledge as we can via free newsletters
and info evenings, raising the bar on quality of service
and being the leading Netball centre in New Zealand.

2015 will be remembered as a year of many highs infused
with much sadness for Aotearoa Maori Netball Oranga
Healthy Lifestyle (AMNOHL) and, for Poi Tarawhiti o Te
Raki Paewhenua.
as the AMNOHL Player of the Tournament. To cap this
off, the team went on to win 2015 Team of the Year at the
Maori Sports Awards! A fantastic achievement for the
team and AMNOHL!
Firstly, we acknowledge the passing of two AMNOHL
life members from Te Waipounamu - Jane Bourke (from
Christchurch) and Nan Ngatai (from Invercargill). We
also mourn the passing of Sharron Te Paa - AMNOHL life
member, AMNOHL Business Manager and “Nannakins”
to Te Tai Tokerau who passed away in November. These
three ladies had been involved with AMNOHL since
its inception and the legacy they leave has been felt
across the country. Closer to home, Poi Tarawhiti o Te
Raki Paewhenua, and the community we cover, have
been rocked by the loss of Joy Steele and Lana Lazarus.
Both ladies will be remembered for the leadership and
guidance they gave to the family, their friends and to the
communities they served.
At the end of May, Netball New Zealand hosted the
Trans-Tasman Under 19 tournament in Rotorua. The
teams involved were Australia Green U19, Australia Gold
U19, NNZ Secondary Schools and AMNOHL U19. From
Te Raki Paewhenua, Kate Burley, Anastasia Sekene and
Michaela Sokolich-Beatson were selected to play for the
AMNOHL team.
In April, our AGM was held and we welcomed Becky
George and Stephanie Hotere as new members to our
Executive Committee (Co-Umpires Co-ordinator and
Secretary respectively).
Five teams from Poi Tarawhiti O Te Raki Paewhenua
participated at the 28th National AMNOHL tournament
this year, hosted by Ikaroa Ki Te Tonga in Wellington. It will
be remembered, as the first time that the entire tournament
was held indoors – at the ASB Stadium in Kilbirnie.
Alongside trainings and a pre-tournament for one team,
the Under 13, Under 15, Under 17, Under 19 and Premier
teams were also involved with health wananga. Topics
covered were: the structure of AMNOHL, nutrition,
whanaungatanga, learning waiata, tikanga Maori and
various health activities. These wananga help develop a
deeper awareness of the importance of Oranga Tinana
(Physical Health), Oranga Hinengaro (Mental Health),
Oranga Wairua (Spiritual Health), Oranga Ngakau
(Emotional Health), Oranga Whanau (Family Well Being)
and Oranga Takaro (Excellence in Sport).
From the tournament, we congratulate Joshua Delamare
(named as one of the Top Ten Umpires), Lavinia Solomon
(named as one of the Top Ten Players for the Under 19
Grade) and Anastasia Sekene (named to trial for the
AMNOHL Secondary School Team).
Trials for the AMNOHL Secondary School team were
held immediately following the National Tournament.
Anastasia was named in the team which participated at
the Bukit Jalil School Sport U19 Net Challenge (previously
the Trans-Tasman Secondary School Tournament) in
Malaysia in May. The team won the tournament (beating
School Sport Australia) and Anastasia was then named
During this time, one Year 8 and an Under 15 team
were selected to participate in the 2015 development
season. Each team took part in tournaments throughout
the Auckland region and in Whangarei. As part of the
season, the teams were involved in wananga (similar to
those held pre-National Tournament).
Preparations are well underway for the 29th National
AMNOHL tournament which will be hosted by Tainui in
Hamilton. Hosting rights were requested by Tainui as a
means to commemorate the 10th year of the reign of
Kingi Tuheitia. At this time too, AMNOHL is preparing
to host, for the first time, the International Secondary
Schoolgirls Netball Challenge in Auckland in May.
We acknowledge all who have been honoured at their
respective Netball Centre and/or Region throughout
the year as players, management, and umpires. From
the outset, our kaupapa has been about developing our
people. It was therefore with pride that we have two
players who have come through our ranks, sign contracts
to ANZ Championship teams in 2016 - Samon Nathan
(with Mojo Pulse) and Michaela Sokolich-Beatson (with
SKYCITY Mystics). To add to the accolades, Michaela
and Kate Burley were selected in the NNZ National
Development Squad who will participate in the short
tour to the Cook Islands in December.
In summary, as the above demonstrates there have been
enormous highs. However, with the passing of Lana
Lazarus, who was Regional Coordinator, it has been a
time to take stock, re-group and ensure that we move
into the future in a way that continues the legacy that
she has left behind. It is therefore with much gratitude
that we take the opportunity to thank all who have all
graciously given of their time during wananga; the
Executive for their continued support of the AMNOHL
kaupapa and the many hours of volunteer service; the
team management, umpires, players and whanau for
their dedicated commitment and to Rodney Netball
Centre, Kaipara Netball Centre, Hibiscus Coast Netball
Centre and, in particular, Netball North Harbour for their
unwavering support and outstanding help.
