Sadly, today’s run was also dedicated to our old
friend, Gary “HARD DRIVE” Jones, who passed away in
January. Good Hashing to you in heaven, HARD DRIVE.
THE GREAT GISPERT MEMORIAL HASH OF 2015 –
LBH3 RUN 1657
-- by WILD “Haji” Bill
It was another crushing Southern
California winter day in the hills of Anaheim.
Temps were soaring toward the 80’s, as we
locals were in contact with the hardy (yet stupid)
folk of New England, offering to trade them our
(unused) snow shovels and ice scrapers for
desperately needed sun screen, ice for the mai
tais and pina coladas, etc. Don’t know why we
continue to live here and pretend we’re having a
good time.
This annual run is dedicated to the
memory of A.S. Gispert, the founder of the
original Hash House Harrier kennel in Kuala
Lumpur, Malaya, back in 1938. He died on 11
February 1942 in the defense of Singapore, never
knowing that his little running club would
blossom into a huge international fraternity,
promoting good health, good will, and good
times throughout the world. In 1988,
ALOUETTE and I met one of the original coFounders, Frederick “Horse” Thomson, in KL at
the 50th Anniversery celebration, and he echoed
those sentiments. He was another Brit who
went “tropo” out in the colonies – his last known
address was “somewhere in the Philippines.”
So, we’re standing
around in this
neighborhood
that’s way too nice
for LBH3 – but
we’re actually
invited guests, so
suddenly it was all
okay. Just not
used to it, that’s
all. The Hares

KOW PADDY KOWBOY and
DICKOREATER promised us 3 Beer
Checks and blah blah blah and they
were off – followed immediately by
about 80% of the pack who just seem
to think it’s okay to disregard the 15minute rule. What do I care?
Sometimes I never even leave the
Beer Van! The early start didn’t help
the walkers much today, though. At
the appointed time, I put my beer
down and took off down to the trail –
about the time most people were
coming back after initially going the
wrong way. AJ found shiggy exactly
ten steps into the bush, planting one
of her feet ankle-deep into the gooey
stuff. Trail went up from there. And
up. Very scenic, but maybe a little
more up, then down to Beer Check
No. 1. I was pretty much back of the
pack anyway, so I stayed there, oh,
until the beer was gone – then picked
up the pace so I could get to Beer
Check No. 2. Trail took us up and up,
past some pretty swanky places and
maybe a golf course, and then on
around Walnut Canyon Reservoir.
CAMEL TOE and I caught up to
DUDES, SPECIAL ED, TERRI,
SCRATCH, and SAD BASTARD
near and SAD BASTARD near
Beer Check No. 2. We only
stuck around there until all the
beer was gone, then pushed on
up past some heavy earthmoving equipment and up over
a ridge. From there, trail left
civilization and went seriously
on down to Beer Check No. 3.
Of course, we only hung around
until all the beer was gone, and
departed smartly down the
canyon, finally catching up to
the more dedicated runners and
small children, and arriving ON
IN before thirst became a
serious issue.
coming back to the Hash. When
DICK was complimented on the
good trail, he mentioned to us how
much about haring he had learned
from old friend and Hare
Extraordinaire PILE DRIVER.
That showed a lot of class, DICK.
After Down Downs, some of
us went to the pizza party the
Hares had arranged for us, and
some of us stopped by HARD
DRIVE’s memorial service to offer
LBH3’s group condolences to his
family. The day was a wonderful
celebration of life, and I wouldn’t
have missed it for quids! Shitty
Trail, Hares!

REHASH: THIS DATE IN HASH HISTORY
Run # 542
Date: 2/26/1995 (20 years ago)
Hares: NUT ‘N HONEY, NO DOUCHEE NO NOOKIE
Place: Costa Mesa Miles: 7.5
Attendance: 76
It was an abnormally warm February morning when we gathered at Estancia Park to bid a fond (but
temporary) farewell to WILD BILL and ALOUETTE who had been exiled by their employers to Iceland.
Scribe HERMOANICA said the only advantage he could think of about living in Iceland was that one’s beer
would always stay cold. After the hares took off, WALKING SMALL asked the scribe which way the hares
were headed and began to plot his shortcutting route. The hares led us through a homeless encampment, lots
of shiggy, a beer check hostessed by TWIN PEAKS, and toward a toxic waste dump. The local police were
here to chase us away from the malodorous area and threatened to charge us with trespassing. Eventually we
reached the on-in and some spirited down-downs began. Our hares, who were also the reigning GM’s, gave
ALOUETTE and WILD BILL a taste of things to come by letting them cool their buns on the dreaded ice
bags. (ALOUETTE later reported that WILD BILL was profoundly affected by this experience for several
days afterwards.) FRUIT gave testimony as to ALOUETTE as a natural hasher. He stated, “I knew she’d be a
great hasher, Her car had a bumper sticker that read No Teeny Weenies.” POPSICKLE reminisced about
WILD BILL’s temporary name change to CACTUS BILL after he had a mishap on one of our trails on
Catalina. SOSUMI advised that the penalty for a DUI in Iceland is death. WILD BILL and ALOUETTE
were presented with a pet to take to Iceland – a 4-foot inflatable penguin that they named PECKER. (Who
knew that penguins live at the South Pole, not the North? Evidently not PMS and BROOMHILDA, who
purchased the little guy!) We honored many, many visitors and returners including SONY DUSTMAN,
HASH BUM, RADAR, QUICKIE, SHORTSTROKES and TORT TART. The hares NUT ‘N HONEY and
NO DOUCHEE were awarded the hashit for wearing camouflage in Orange County. The on-on was
announced as Zubie’s, so some of the pack went to their Huntington Beach location while others went to the
Costa Mesa restaurant. Eventually, we all reunited and a good time was had by all.
