19 May, 2011 - SPONSORs Sports Media Summit
19 May, 2011 ISS Dome, Düsseldorf www.sports-media-summit.com Programme Premium Partners Strategic Partners Conference news FROM ANALOGUE TV TO TWITTER: MEDIA JOURNEY THROUGH TIME WITH WOLFGANG NIERSBACH Wolfgang Niersbach experienced a great deal during his time in the football business: 15 years as a journalist with the Sports Information Service (SID), press officer for the 1988 UEFA Euro, 13 years as media director at the DFB, executive vice-president and press officer for the 2006 FIFA World Cup Organising Committee, general secretary since 2007 and thus also the highest-ranking full-time DFB employee. Similar to Niersbach’s career, the field of media has developed at the DFB over the years. From publication of the first DFB-Journal back in 1989, to the founding of the DFB Medien GmbH and DFB-Online GmbH: No other DFB official has accompanied or shaped professionalisation of the association like the 60-year-old. Under Niersbach’s leadership, the world‘s biggest football association with a reputation of a ponderous giant has shown what innovations it is capable of. The DFB achieved a four-fold increase in revenue while remaining popular and close to the people, as the website user figures also show: 4.8 million visitors during the 2010 World Cup, the DFB app has been downloaded a total of 125,000 times, and over 60,000 people follow the association on Twitter. Wolfgang Niersbach shall report on the DFB’s sports media journey since he took up the office in 1988. TV SPONSORING BAN THREATENS SPORTS BROADCASTING THE “KAREN MURPHY” CASE The TV sponsoring ban for public service broadcasting provoked a wave of outrage last year. Shortly before Christmas, the 16 minister presidents of the German federal states unanimously agreed the 15th revision of the Interstate Broadcasting Agreement (Rundfunkstaatsvertrag, RStV), which is to come into force on 1 January, 2013. According to critics, sporting events or even entire sporting disciplines threaten to die out. Representatives of private television see things differently however. The public service broadcasters are being accused of abusing the discussion for their media and sports rights policies to remove unappealing sporting disciplines from the programme in the future, or to beat down the prices for lucrative rights. There’s sure to be plenty to discuss on the main stage at the 2011 It began with a Greek card decoder landlady Karen Murphy used in her pub in England to broadcast Premier League games live and ultimately ended in the European Court of Justice (ECJ). The ECJ is to now decide whether the English Barclays Premier League can prohibit games being broadcast using a Greek card. In her non-binding opinion, the advocate general of the ECJ stated that the practice of marketing broadcasting rights exclusively for individual countries was contrary to EU law. In a one-on-one chat, Dr. Sebastian Cording (Lawyer and Partner, CMS Hasche Sigle) and Thomas Röttgermann (Managing Director, VfL Wolfsburg) shall discuss the possible consequences of the ECJ reaching a similar conclusion to the advocate general. 2 SPONSOR Sports Media Summit when guests including Dagmar Freitag (Chair of the Sports Committee in the German Bundestag), Clemens Prokop (President of the German Athletics Association, DLV), Zeljko Karajica (CEO, Sport1) and Michael Amsinck (Managing Director, SportA) reflect on why the ban only applies on Sundays and after 8 pm. The question of why – of all events – matches involving the German national team and the Olympics remain unaffected by TV sponsoring ban while top DFB Cup matches are affected shall be addressed, and clarification sought for the question of whether the ARD and ZDF are even in a position to bid for certain sports rights in the future if they cannot guarantee the original rights holders a TV presence during the broadcasts. S www.sports-media-summit.com Conference news UNIQUE CONFERENCE SET-UP Following the great success of the SpoBis, the next sport business industry meet will be held in Düsseldorf today. The ISS Dome – home rink of the DEG Metro Stars – is to host the industry meet, which brings together professionals from around 15 countries, for the first time. SPONSORS is particularly looking forward to the exclusive location of the main stage: directly on the ice in the multifunctional arena with a capacity of 13,400. The ISS Dome additionally affords an unusually large business area, which is ideal for the event. With short distances, a top-quality programme and excellent networking conditions, the conference’s success is sure to continue in its new home. UNIQUE CONFERENCE SET-UP: MAIN STAGE IN THE ISS DOME. ENHANCED EXCLUSIVITY: JUST 100 TICKETS ON SALE In an attempt to make the SPONSORS Sports Media Summit an even more decisive driving force within the industry, 150 sports rights holders and sponsors from both Germany and overseas are to be hand-picked to attend the conference for the first time in 2011. Personal invitations were be issued in consultation with the strategic conference partners, namely the German Football League (DFL) and the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB). The Sports Media Summit has already made a name for itself in the past with its extremely high proportion of decision-makers. Now, in addition to the marketers, media and service providers, who are almost all represented, the proportion of clubs, leagues, associations and their sponsors is to be further boosted. Demand is high, with new innovations coming onto the market at increasingly short intervals, thus presenting sports rights holders and advertisers with ever-new challenges. Only those with a personal invitation will be granted access. A further 100 tickets have been allocated to the speakers and partners. To preserve the event’s exclusive character, a total of just 100 tickets were available for purchase. SPONSORS ORGANISES INNOVATION FORUM Never before have media been as diverse and multifaceted as they are today: the German Football Association (DFB) is on Twitter, Bayern Munich has almost one million Facebook fans, and virtually every club is working on a new app. Before this backdrop, SPONSORS organises the Innovation Forum for the first time. Without any restrictions, all industry players were eligible to submita project. Not only will the four top projects have the chance to showcase their project within the scope of the conference; their winning project will also be presented in a fullpage spread in the SPONSORS magazine. You can find the winners on page 6. FOUR PREMIUM PARTNERS FOR THE FIRST TIME The SPONSORS Sports Media Summit is pleased to announce its Premium Partner packages have sold out for the first time in the event’s six-year history. This year’s distinguished conference partners are an indication that the event is based on longstanding trust and is highly regarded by the industry’s leading companies. German telecommunications company Deutsche Telekom, law firm CMS Hasche Sigle and sports media Kicker online/Fussball.de can together look back on eleven years of presence at the SPONSORS Sports Media Summit. It is with great pleasure that SPONSORS welcomes sports marketing agency The Sportsman into this exclusive circle. The Munich-based agency brings together sports rights trader, The Sportsman Media Group; the international leading web TV platform, LAOLA1.tv; and, since recently, online marketing agency, Gramercy Global Media; and is thus the perfect complement to the existing three partners. www.sports-media-summit.com 3 Programme overview | 19 May, 2011 9.45 · Discussion TV sponsoring ban: The effects of the new German Interstate Broadcasting Agreement on sport and the German media landscape Dagmar Freitag, Chair of the Sports Commission, German Bundestag Dr. Clemens Prokop, President, German Athletics Association (DLV) 3 Zeljko Karajica, CEO, Sport1 4 Michael Amsinck, Managing Director, SportA 1 2 1 2 3 4 10.30 · Presentation Rights, Content and Production to serve the football fan – the FIFA case ENGLISH Niclas Ericson, TV Director, FIFA 11.30 · Forum Presented by: New media 14.00 · Forum Sport & Law 4 11.30 · Forum Presented by: Innovation Forum Presented by: 14.00 · Forum Sponsorship in the digital age www.sports-media-summit.com Presented by: Programme overview | 19 May, 2011 16.00 · Presentation & 1:1 talk Outdated or a model for the future?
