Fight Night Marriage event scheduled for Friday, Nov. 11 BY TODD BETTES WOODSIDE NEWS WRITER I ’ve been in lots of battles that weren’t even worth being won. Or, my wife isn’t so tough; it’s just that she never learned how to fight fair. Does this have a familiar ring? I received a good lesson in winning fights while playing youth ice hockey. The lesson was simple, I was not a good pugilist, so forget about landing the first punch, and go for the headlock. My wrestling skills were superior to my boxing skills, and when I employed that advantage, victory was mine. Fortunately, the hockey teams I played on had rosters of skilled players, and fighting was a rarity. The scoreboard told the story, more often in our favor. However, you might have guessed that methods for handling disagreements on the ice, typically don’t work well for handling disagreements in marriage. So that pretty well shoots down the idea of finding a physical advantage and exploiting it. I have also been taught over time that volume alone doesn’t make for a winning argument, and finally I’ve yet to see a pair of linesmen or referees wait for a married couple to “punch themselves out” and tire so they can safely be separated. How then do couples fight the good fight? You can start by marking your calendars for Friday, Nov.11, when Fight Night comes to Woodside. Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott will provide a Date Night/ Fight Night fun and humorous look at how couples can better manage conflict. Coaching through two rounds, the Parrott tag-team will inform, “Why we fight with the person we love most” and “How to fight with the person we love most.” Included in this night’s topics are: The number one reason couples fight, how to instantly resolve 9 out of 10 arguments, how to be smart about dumb fights, four essentials of a good fight, and much more. Whether the road has been smooth, or somewhat rocky, couples of all ages can expect to find fresh insight and new strategies for using conflict to bring them closer together. Les and Leslie Parrott, a psychologist and marriage therapist respectively, have been married since 1984, and have vulnerability, humor, authenticity and relevance, enough so that this Fight Night is sure to be fun. Set aside this one evening for a date night as Fight Night comes to Woodside’s Troy campus, Friday, Nov. 11, 7:30-9:30 p.m. For additional information on this event and to register online, go to woodsidebible.org/event/fight-night. Todd Bettes can be contacted at toddbettes@woodsidenews.org. 2 Section B OCTOBER 2016 october happenings ALL CAMPUS Life Impact NATIVITY: EXPERIENCE IT LIVE Ever wonder what it would be like to live during biblical times? SUNDAY MORNINGS OLD TESTAMENT SURVEY Sept. 11-Oct. 16 10-11 a.m. Room 180 Led by Dave Wood The Old Testament is made up of 39 books and comprises nearly three-fourths of the Bible. However, most Christians don’t know what to do with it. We might read a Psalm or enjoy it like a collection of moral stories. However, once a disciple learns the themes of the OT, it wonderfully connects the dots for the entire Bible. For example, you really can’t understand fully the Lord’s Supper without a grasp of the Tabernacle. The Lord’s Prayer comes alive when you see its foundation in the Exodus of the Jews. In part one, we will examine the Books of the Law (the first 5 books of the Bible) and then the historical books starting with Joshua and ending with Esther. care? Does God care, but is not power ful to do anything? What does a believer do? What is the church to do in this mess? What is the role of prayer? How should we pray? How will this all end? In this study we will dig into the Bible for perspective, direction and truth. SERMON ON THE MOUNT Room 178 Led by Steven Axe The Sermon on the Mount is one of the most familiar and one of the most lifetransforming passages of Scripture. In it Jesus turns our way of thinking and living upside down and seeks to remake us. In this class we will discover what it looks like to be a follower of Jesus and to live Jesus’ vision of what it means to be human. In this class we will go verse by verse through the Sermon on the Mount and in addition, we will interact with Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s reflections on the Sermon on the Mount. FINANCES THAT WORK – A BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE Room 179 Led by Dan Kostaroff This will be a life-changing study on what the Scriptures teach us about “our” possessions and “our” money. You will leave the study equipped to find your way out of debt, save more consistently, give more generously and live a life free from the grip of financial worr y. This class is for ever yone regardless of one’s current financial situation. Come and learn how to best utilize the resources God has given you. BIBLE STUDY FOR ADULTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS [ Sept.-May, 7-8:30 p.m. Community Room, ($30 book) Led by Pastor Mike Wendland Join us for Explorer’s Bible Study’s year long (Sept.-May) study on the book of Romans. For more information, contact JoAnnWoyak@woodsidebible. org or 248.879.8533 x172. Room 180 Led by Greg McDougall It’s been said that the book of Matthew is perhaps the fullest and most systematic account of the teachings of Christ. We will use a special education approach to this study, including the Visual Bible and handouts. Through His work and teachings, you will get to know Jesus better as he responds to needy people, handles conflict and faces opposition. You will be informed, challenged and become a better disciple through this study. WEDNESDAY EVENINGS DEAF MINISTRY BIBLE STUDY MONDAY EVENINGS EXPLORER’S BIBLE STUDY Sept. 14-Oct. 19 6:40-8 p.m. All classes will gather in the Worship Center for a time of praise and worship before dismissing to our groups. And yet major questions remain. Does God know, but not 6:30-8 p.m. Room 205 Led by Lumnije Velijej Understanding the basic foundations and histor y of Christianity is impor tant to our faith. This class is taught in American sign language and there will be time for questions and answers. Men’s Ministr y For more information on Men’s Ministr y, contact BrianWood@woodsidebible.org. U2: LIVING AN UNEXPLAINABLE AND UNFORGETTABLE LIFE Tuesdays, Sept. 13-Oct. 18 6:30-7:30 a.m. Rooms 179 and 180 Led by Pastor Doug Schmidt This gathering is for any man who is restless with the mundane life and wants more. We will, through different intervals, explore the Scriptures, experience some deep but practical teaching, learn from history and challenge each other. This will be an adventure. KNOW WHAT YOU BELIEVE Tuesdays, Sept. 13-Oct. 18 6:30-7:30 a.m. Rooms 179 and 180 Led by Mark Johnson and Scott Gillesby What does the Christian faith teach about God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit? What do I need to know about angels, Satan and demons? What place should the Bible or a church have in my life? How do I know God’s Word is true? By exploring these and other core questions, we’ll gain a greater appreciation of God, His Word and how these fundamental truths impact our lives in a relevant way. FOUNDATIONS Thursdays, Sept. 15-Oct. 20 6:30-7:30 a.m. Room 180 Led by Bill Tonissen and Andrew Bommarito Thursday morning is an opportunity for men to develop community, while being challenged and inspired to be all that God created them to be. We’ll focus on biblical foundations, which will incorporate timeless truth with engaging group discussion. Our first 6-week session is centered on prayer – how it is not just a plea or a request, but something that God wants to use in a powerful and transformational way! SATURDAY MORNING MEN’S BIBLE STUDY Saturdays, 8 a.m.-9:30 a.m. Room 205 Led by Tony Gratson and Rob Bunger Disciplines of a Godly Man by R. Kent Hughes is “An inspiring and practical guide for men who seek to reflect God’s glory in their lives. This book is a challenging text for personal devotions as well as for assisting young followers of Christ to grow in their walk with God.” EVENTS MEN’S BREAKFAST Oct. 8, 8-9:30 a.m. ($7) Why Chris Norman said No to the NFL Join us for our next Men’s Breakfast with Michigan State linebacker Chris Norman. Find out why this promising AllAmerican turned from options in the NFL to full time ministry. “Football is one of the best things anyone could ever do… but true life — what it means to live — is all wrapped up in the way you follow Christ.” – CHRIS NORMAN Our Men’s Breakfast is always a great opportunity to connect TROY HAPPENINGS continued from page 4 OCTOBER 2016 FROM ERIC HAVEN Section B 3 [DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT- WOODSIDE VISION FOUNDATION] Measuring our resolve D o you know how to measure the strength of something? You do it by measuring what it takes to defeat it. I worked for 25 years in the plastics industry. Engineering-grade plastics compete with aluminum ERIC HAVEN and steel in many automotive applications. These materials are much stronger in some respects than plastic. To decide what material to design into a given car part, tests have to be run. The tests try to make the plastic part fail and then measure the power it took to make it fail. Whether it be in tensile strength (pulling) or in compression (pressing) the measurement for the strength of the plastic is the amount of tension or pressure it takes to make it break. The same is true in my spiritual resolve. Question to self: “How strong am I in my resolve or determination to follow the Lord and do right things?” Answer: “What it takes to defeat me.” Am I a feather or a rock in my resolve? I think of Glenn White, who was a new Vice President of Chrysler Corporation in the day of Road Runners, Dusters and Barracudas. One of his first marketing decisions was that Chrysler would no longer advertise in pornographic magazines. For him, this decision was a no-brainer. He said, “You do what is right and trust God with the results.” Management opponents argued he was putting his personal values in front of the corporation. (Sounds a bit like the Daniel story, doesn’t it?) Glenn resolved to move ahead, developing ads that ERIC HAVEN continued on page 5 Kim Smith, a fearless man BY DANIEL PARK WOODSIDE MISSIONS INTERN I have never met a man as fearless as Kim Smith, and I don’t think I ever will. It’s an attribute of God’s gifting that makes Kim such a great fit for the fear-driven, fear-stricken country of Liberia. On top of that, I don’t think I’ve ever met a man that has as big an evangelistic mindset as he does. You combine the two together, and you have a great missionary that is willing to lay it all down for the sake of the Gospel. A story that describes Kim well comes from my first month serving in Liberia. Kim discovered a crack house nearby where ex-soldiers from the war were hanging out. So, with no hesitation, he put on his weekly agenda to visit this crack house regularly with me tagging along. Mind you, this crack house is full of ex-soldiers from the war who knew nothing but violence and rage. But we went and we preached the Gospel. The owner of the property became enraged as he started Kim Smith administers river baptism in Liberia. to lose his business, as addicts were being freed from their addiction. Yet, Kim remained fearless and kept preaching the Gospel. Eventually, we experienced at least three life changes after visiting for weeks. From that point, I knew this ministry was ordained by God and there is much to be done in the country of Liberia. Kim has dedicated his whole life for the Gospel in that difficult country. Daniel Park can be contacted at danielpark@woodsidebible.org. FROM GREG SCHUPRA Finishing strong: an inspiring approach, Part 1 of 3 T he final months of the year hold some of the most anticipated times of the year. It’s the time we enjoy cider, donuts and wagon rides at the apple orchard; GREG SCHUPRA It’s kick-off time for college and professional football. And it’s a time to get lost in a corn maze or spooked at a haunted house. Or eating turkey, stuffing and gravy with family at Thanksgiving. Or anticipating the joy and gift of Christmas and all of the specialness the Season brings. The year-end also brings with it the opportunity to finish the year strong by impacting others. It provides us with the time that we can encourage and inspire those in need through our charitable giving. Typically, a significant percentage of all charitable contributions are made during the last few months of the year. If 2016 giving in the U.S. exceeds the $373 billion given in 2015, there will be a lot of funds transferred to charitable organizations during the next few months. With federal income tax rates ranging from 10 [ADVISOR TO THE WOODSIDE VISION FOUNDATION] to 39.6 percent and capital gains tax rates ranging from 15 to 20 percent, many donors itemizing their tax returns will appreciate the deductions their charitable gifts generate. However, tax benefits are not the only advantage to year-end giving. The greatest benefit may be the encouragement and inspiration you can bring to those at this time of year. One year, several of my friends discovered that a local human service organization was going through tough budget times. The organization was not going to be able to provide pay raises or offer modest Christmas bonuses which they typically provided their employees at year-end. My friends approached the executive director of the organization and asked if they could do something special for the employees by hosting and paying for a staff Christmas dinner and provide funds that the executive director could present each employee with a modest year-end gift. The executive director loved the idea and the event was held. All of the employees were greatly encouraged and felt most appreciated by the generosity of those several friends who pooled their resources together and provided a little something extra for the hardworking staff of the organization. Needless to say the following year proved to be exceptional for the organization due, in part, to the inspired and uplifted staff. So what is an approach to inspiring others this year-end? First, make a list of the charitable causes and organizations near and dear to your heart. Then, do a little research and discover those extraordinary needs each may have from their “menu of giving opportunities.” This menu is generally those areas of need that an organization has that is above and beyond their general operating budget. Once you have identified an opportunity that interests you, learn more about that particular need and the impact your gift can have on the organization and its service to others. Finally, make your contribution, inspire the organization and its staff, volunteers and clientele and help them finish the year strong. And through your intentional generosity, you too will finish the year in a most positive manner! For information on how to impact others through Woodside’s Vision Foundation, contact Pastor Eric Haven at the email address noted above, or through the Troy campus office at 248-879-8533. CO-ED BIBLE STUDY Sept. 11-Oct. 16 Sundays, 11:30 a.m. Room 141 We gather Sunday mornings to connect and study God’s Word together. We are beginning a new series, Studying Spiritual Gifts and God’s Design for the Church. Children are welcome to attend Woodside Kids or Oasis (Middle School) while you attend class. DISCIPLESHIP GROUPS MEN’S GROUPS Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m., bi-weekly beginning Oct. 11 We will be working through a series entitled, “Fight: Winning the Battles that Matter Most” by Craig Groeschel. This study will help us uncover who we really are as men. We will find strength to fight the battles we know we must win: the ones that determine the state of our hearts and the spiritual health of those we love most. We will examine the life of Samson a strong man with glaring weaknesses. Like many men, Samson taunted his enemy and rationalized his sins. The good news is God’s grace is greater than your worst sin. TROY HAPPENINGS continued from page 6 Section B OCTOBER 2016 ERIC HAVEN continued from page 3 showcased Chrysler’s sleekimage muscle cars with wit and humor rather than skin. Did sales slump or jump? The auto company had record sales which, “Catapulted the division from #8 to #3 behind Chevy and Ford.” (This story is reported in his son David’s book, The 11 beatitudes of prosperity, a great book! (Complementary copies are available.) Glenn White kept getting promoted and actually stayed beyond normal retirement age at Chrysler. Lee Iacocca, Chrysler CEO, then asked Glenn to serve on his family foundation board. (The story ends like a Daniel story too, only the names change when we serve the same God.) Glenn’s resolve passed the test. The obstacles thrown in his way were themselves defeated as God showed up. “You do what is right and trust God with the results.” – GLENN WHITE, CHRYSLER CORP. The life of Kim Smith, Woodside global partner (noted on page 3A), is a similar story. Facing many obstacles, Kim is obedient to God’s call to serve in the rugged country of Liberia. I have always loved the quote of William Carey, missionary to India, “We are surrounded by difficulties on every hand, therefore, we must go forward!” I love Carey’s resolve and Kim’s, and pray God will give me and you the same resolve to expand His kingdom using every ounce of time, talent and treasure He has given us. The Woodside Vision Foundation exists to help us deploy our financial resources with that vision. Join in, so all will someday hear Christ’s words, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” Eric Haven can be contacted at erichaven@woodsidebible.org. 5 TROY CAMPUS LOCATION 6600 Rochester Road Troy, MI 48085 248-879-8533 DIRECTIONS Woodside Troy Campus is located on the east side of Rochester Rd. approximately one mile south of M-59 or 4 miles north of I-75 off of the Rochester Rd. exits. APOCALYPSE NOW: DISCOVERING THE PRESENT-DAY BENEFITS OF THE REVELATION FOR THE CHURCH TODAY 6:30-8 p.m. Auditorium Led by Steve Zarrilli All are welcome (high school age and older) Fear and anxiety are capturing the hearts and minds of people today with greater ferocity than in recent memor y. The election, the direction of this nation, the trajector y of the world and our place as Christians in this unfolding drama tempt us to fall into the trap of emotional torment. But, what is the end? What matters most? Is there hope? What does God’s ultimate reign and rule have to do with RIGHT NOW? This Bible Study will explore the final two chapters of the book of Revelation as we discover the immediate and relevant application of the revelation of Jesus Christ. Week 4: Revelation 21:22-27 Week 5: Revelation 22: 1-5 Week 6: Revelation 22:6-21 DISCIPLESHIP DETOX: CLEANSING OUR LIVES FROM THE TOXINS IN OUR CHRISTIANITY Wednesdays, Oct. 26-Nov. 30 Led by Steve Zarrilli and Heather Cumming Discipleship Detox: Cleansing Our Lives from the Toxins in our Christianity Description: Undetected toxic goals, beliefs and practices tend to creep their way into our faith. The result is that we end up thinking we have drunk from the pure gospel of Jesus when in fact we have mixed the good news with some degree of bad news without realizing it. In short, often we believe we are following Jesus’ way when in fact we are following some other way instead. Pastor and author Zack Eswine reminds us that Jesus’ way of teaching pushes back on our cultural values: doing large and famous (celebrity) things as fast as possible (immediate gratification) according to my personal preferences (consumer) VERSUS Doing small, mostly overlooked (humility), things over a long period of time (patience). How things work in God’s kingdom are not at all the same as how things work in our kingdom. Yet, the values of our kingdom influence our faith in deep and profound ways. For five weeks we want to cleanse our faith from the ways of the world and reorient our faith around the ways of Jesus. Join us for this Bible Study that is sure to transform the way we think about life, success, the church and ultimately what it means to be a disciple of Jesus. It takes a work of grace to keep our disappointment on earth from completely overshadowing what God graciously and perfectly promises. And His promise is nothing short of awesome: While we are here on earth, we await Jesus’ coming with all of the excitement and expectation of a bride for her groom. When Jesus finally comes, our life with Him will be everything we’re expecting, we will never be disappointed, and more than that, we will be blown away with all that God has prepared for us. Tickets also can be obtained by calling Molly Clarkson at 248-978-8183. There are several ways Woodside campus groups can help the Dream Center combat hunger. A canned food drive is one way. Volunteering to serve during one of three meals each week is another. The Center’s food pantry, which opened on May 15, 2015, gives families another way to put food on the table. During the first seven months of 2016, the food pantry gave away 1,119 boxes of food. “Kids are coming to the pantry, sent by parents who are at work. For about $15 we can give a family of four people three meals. Combine this with the free food we receive from Gleaners Food Bank, and we can help families make it through the weekend,” Sewell said. Transformations, a Thursday morning Bible study group at Troy campus, stepped into the gap, providing the organization, support and food donations that enabled the Dream Center to open its food pantry last year. A permanent food collection box is now located at Troy campus, in the hallway between the community room and gym. Each week the donations are transported to Pontiac so the pantry shelves can be restocked. Will his perspective of what happened to him lead to revenge? Retaliation? Resentment? Retribution? A Reckoning? Genesis 50:20: “As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today.” It would’ve been easy for Joseph to justify looking at himself as a victim. Instead of being a victim of other people, perspective helped him understand that he was a vessel of God’s grace to other people! A godly perspective changes everything. Remember when the prophet wrote, Isaiah 55:8: “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the plish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.” (Isaiah 55:10-11) Here’s the thing – we have no control over the problems we face, but we have absolute control over our perspective. We can’t make ourselves exempt from the issues that come up in life. We know problems will come because “that’s life.” But, we can control how we respond to those problems … how we react to them …what we think and feel in the midst of them! Because perspective is a matter of faith. And, if we are in Christ through faith, then we’ve been given a new perspective. That means instead of seeing scarcity (we don’t have enough), upon further review you see abundance (we have all we need). Instead of seeing in Christ. Instead of misery, you see joy. Instead of walking through life unsatisfied, you see contentment. Perspective changes everything. Remember that Jesus himself endured the cross for the joy set before him (Hebrews 12:2). That’s a heavenly perspective. That’s seeing problems as opportunities. As you consider your life, recognize that all the plays you think you messed up, upon further review, God can use them to move you down the field if you’ll let him. What’s your perspective? How about trading it in for the one in the booth? Things look different from up there! Steve Zarrilli can be contacted at stevezarrilli@ woodsidebible.org. The joy and friendliness of the volunteers, the repeated compassionate care and prayer ministry offered by a certain Woodsider, and the sovereign movement of God’s Spirit has drawn this man into the arms of a God who loves him. Jim has surrendered himself to the lifegiving power of Jesus. His call today was to celebrate another work of God in his life. The water heater that has failed can now be replaced because of an unanticipated check that came in the mail today! “God is taking care of me!” Jim exclaimed with deep appreciation. We are thankful for the way God uses the generosity and kindness of the Woodside family as we make ourselves available to people. And we are overjoyed when we see our family grow with those who have been transformed and are joining the mission of reaching others for Jesus.
