GAZING
What is it that makes an experience or
destination ‘five-star’? Whatever the criteria,
surely the Island of the Gods must score top
marks. Author and Bali resident Paul Walters
sets out to get a sense for ‘five-star’ Bali.

First impressions are essential, and this
property delivers in spades as you enter
a slightly understated lobby, which plays
second string to the impossibly beautiful
ocean view framed perfectly by the
floor-to-ceiling glass walls. The resort itself
cascades down a steep cliff to the luxuriously
appointed suites, and villas far below,
reached by a glass-enclosed funicular that
transports you to ‘ground level’. The subtle
architecture, splendid gardens, constructed
to resemble Bali’s fabled rice terraces, and
copious pools all meander gently to the
whitest of white-sand beaches.
Architecture and a glorious setting,
however spectacular, go only so far
when reaching for that ‘five-star’ experience,
as service really has to do the heavy lifting
when it comes to delivering a memorable
stay for guests. The Ritz Carlton prides itself
on consistency, and the staff (always referred
to as ladies and gentlemen) strive for
perfection as they glide amongst the guests,
invisible yet always there to attend to every
need no matter how large or small.
Everything about this property, from its
magnificently appointed suites and villas,
the legendary spa treatments and its array
of culinary offerings, shouts ‘five-star’, and
I would be remiss to not mention its sister
property's newly opened signature Bejana
restaurant, whose refined Indonesian cuisine
is a must for foodies; it’s simply fabulous.
All too soon I had to leave this haven of
tranquillity and onwards I went on my star
quest, seeking ‘five-star’ experiences that
go beyond luxury hotels and resorts.
I was after an authentic cultural experience,
and honestly, on this island they are not
hard to find.
When this assignment
landed on my desk I thought
it would be a breeze. Living in
Bali as I do, establishments
that proudly proclaim their
emporiums to be deserving
of a five-star rating surround
me, and so the choice was vast.

But what is a five-star experience? And
who really bestows these lofty awards on
establishments that then proudly display the
heady emblem on their shingles? At the end
of the day it is the visitor, the traveller, you
and I, who decide what is deserving of a true
‘five-star’ distinction, and believe you me,
we are a rather discerning lot!
And so, I set off on my quest to discover
exactly what five-star epitomises. If we look
at it from a luxury standpoint, then what
better place is there to start than at the newly
re-launched Ritz-Carlton, Bali.
This revered brand is an international
standard of luxury and has finally made
its highly anticipated return to Bali after
an absence of several years, beginning to
welcome guests back in December 2014.
Mid-June heralds the Bali Arts Festival,
which up to the second week of July presents
a full month of daily performances,
handicraft exhibitions and other cultural
activities. I first discovered this spectacle
a few years ago when I happened on the giant
parade that weaves its way through the leafy
streets of the island’s capital, Denpasar.
Astonishing would be a tame adjective when
trying to describe the riot of colour and noise
and the thousands of participants
resplendent in traditional dress.
The festival itself is an absolute must
for lovers of theatre and dance, and it is
a perfect opportunity to experience the best
of Balinese culture featuring legong, gambuh,
kecak, barong baris and mask performances.
Events are staged in a wonderful temple-like
amphitheatre that seats over 6,000 (most
performances are free) and is open to the
stars above; it is truly a majestic spectacle
and is a ‘five-star’ experience for the insight

it offers into the heritage of the destination
and the culture of its people. And there are
many more world-class festivals that take
place throughout the year.
Next I head to the hills to experience
something I am not that adept at – cycling!
I often wonder why men and women seem
to want to squeeze into garishly coloured
Lycra, leap onto a bicycle that weighs little
more than my breakfast croissant, and then
peddle furiously up hill and dale at suicidal
speeds…it’s quite beyond me.
So it was with some trepidation that
I accepted an invitation to participate with
some friends, far fitter than me, on a 42km
bike ride high in the hills beyond Ubud.
A small minivan collected our party at 6am
from our villa in Sanur and we set out on
a 90-minute drive up to Bali’s second highest
volcano, Mount Bator. Today there was no
Lycra on show, and everybody seemed rather
relaxed as we began our day by tucking
into a sumptuous breakfast in a restaurant
overlooking the volcano and the majestic
lake far below.
Soon it was time to meet my maker as the
appointed hour had arrived when the actual
bike ride began. Our driver deposited us in
a nearby field where the Bali Eco Cycle crew
had assembled, complete with an array of
sturdy mountain bikes, and promptly handed
out rather stylish and altogether jaunty safety
helmets. After an in-depth safety briefing
it was time to set forth on what I thought
would be the exhausting chore on wheels…
how wrong I was!
On the bliss scale, this cycle experience
would score a perfect ten. You see, the entire
ride is downhill! The guides soon have you
leaving the main roads and, like magic, you
are sailing down obscure byways and narrow
paths that dissect small villages, past rice
fields, verdantly green in the early morning
light and completely devoid of traffic. Images
of rural Balinese life flash by in a blur;
children making their way to school call
out cheery greetings, farmers heading off
to their fields, woman bearing huge loads
of firewood; it was a wonderful experience.
Halfway down I was seriously contemplating
Bali Eco Tours will take you way
off the beaten track through the
island’s hinterland.
Bali allows you to discover your inner
self, if you let it.
All too soon I had to leave this haven of tranquillity
and onwards I went on my star quest, seeking ‘five-star’
experiences that go beyond luxury hotels and resorts.
I was after an authentic cultural experience,
and honestly, on this island they are not hard to find.

If you’re looking for a true
aquatic wildlife encounter,
take a trip up to Lovina in the
north of the island and hop
aboard a boat for a cruise.
On most mornings up to a
thousand dolphins will leap
joyously from the azure blue
waters to bid you good morning.
Travel to the charming district
of Amed where the sunrises are
sublime; or spend a night in
the misty mountains of
Munduk; or swim in the waters
off Candidasa, where you will
feel like you have immersed
yourself in a tropical aquarium.

corner in Bali, and all it takes
is for the discerning visitor to
seek them out in their various
forms, from resplendent resort
luxury, pristine beaches and
unbelievably picturesque
landscapes, to unique cultural
festivals and connecting with
the locals or absorbing
the positive energies of
a centuries-old temple.
Never forget that we are the ones
who decide what a ‘five-star’
experience actually is. Luckily in
Bali it is often an easy decision.
Kubu is one of the superb dining
outlets at the Ritz Carlton.
Need pampering? Try a romantic
candlelit bath experience.
Holy water flows freely from
he ornate spouts at the Titra
Empul Temple.
Just one of the intricately carved
statues you will find in the Monkey
Forest in Ubud.
There is perhaps no more
awe-inspiring sight than the sun
creeping over the horizon in the
sleepy fishing villages in Amed.
The constant changing of the
colours and hues is almost
hypnotic. It is no wonder that
Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime
minister of India, coined the
phrase, “Bali, it is the morning
of the world.”

Seek and ye shall find! A
picnic spot on one of the
many rivers on the island.
Saat menerima tugas ini,
saya pikir akan mudah
melakukannya. Sebagai orang
yang tinggal di Bali, saya
dikelilingi tempat-tempat
yang diklaim berbintang
lima. Jadi, saya punya
banyak pilihan.
Tetapi apa sebenarnya definisi bintang lima
dan siapa penyemat predikat yang sering
dibangga-banggakan ini? Sebagai pengunjung
dan wisatawan, Anda dan sayalah yang
sepantasnya memutuskan siapa yang
benar-benar layak mendapat “bintang lima”.
Karena itu, saya melakukan perjalanan
untuk menemukan arti “bintang lima”
sesungguhnya. Dan jika kita melihatnya
dari sisi kemewahan, maka tempat yang
tepat untuk memulai perjalanan ini adalah
Ritz-Carlton, Bali, yang baru diresmikan
kembali beberapa waktu lalu.
Hotel tersohor ini adalah cerminan standar
internasional untuk sebuah kemewahan.
Setelah absen beberapa tahun, hotel ini
mulai beroperasi lagi di Bali pada Desember
2014 dan mendapat sambutan positif.
Dengan pemandangan yang luar biasa
indah dari lobinya, hotel ini memberikan
kesan pertama yang tak terlupakan. Dari lobi
hotel Anda dapat melihat keindahan laut
yang dibingkai sempurna dengan dindingdinding kaca. Resor ini sendiri berlokasi di
tebing curam dengan kamar-kamar mewah

pengalaman menginap yang tak
terlupakan. Karena itu, Ritz Carlton
mengedepankan konsistensi dan para
stafnya (yang disebut ladies dan gentlemen)
selalu berusaha memberikan pelayanan
sempurna dan siap melayani kebutuhan
sekecil apa pun.
Semua yang ada di sini, mulai dari vila
dan kamar-kamarnya yang ditata dengan
sangat indah, perawatan spa-nya yang
legendaris, hingga beragam sajian kulinernya,
semua berkualitas “bintang lima”. Dan Anda,
para foodies, harus mencoba masakan Indonesia
di restoran baru di The Ritz-Carlton, Bali, Bejana.
Sayangnya, saya harus segera meninggalkan
segala nuansa damai ini dan melanjutkan
perjalanan saya mendapatkan pengalaman
bintang lima di luar hotel dan resor mewah.
Kali ini saya mencari pengalaman budaya
yang autentik, dan jujur, tidak sulit
menemukannya di Bali.
Pertengahan Juni adalah puncak Festival
Seni Bali. Berbagai pertunjukan seni,
pameran kerajinan tangan, dan kegiatan
budaya lainnya digelar setiap hari hingga
pertengahan Juli. Saya pertama kali
menyaksikan pertunjukan seni ini beberapa
tahun lalu, ketika saya tidak sengaja melihat
pawai raksasa sedang melintasi jalan-jalan di
Ibu Kota Bali, Denpasar. Menakjubkan adalah
kata yang tepat untuk menggambarkan

THE FOOD
From Bali’s myriad fine
restaurants to the simpler but
equally flavourful fare cooked by
the kaki lima carts (roving food
carts), the taste of Balinese food
is unsurprisingly vibrant and
aromatic and lingers long after
the meal is done. Because the
island is an international holiday
destination, you’ll also find
world-class international
cuisines, ranging from Japanese,
to French, Italian, fusion joints
and everything else in between.

annual kite festival in Sanur. Tails can be
as long as 30 metres.

Festival ini wajib ditonton oleh para
pencinta teater dan tari, serta mereka yang
ingin merasakan pengalaman budaya Bali
yang menampilkan legong, gambuh, kecak,
barong, baris, dan pertunjukan topeng.
Pertunjukan diadakan di sebuah teater indah
menyerupai kuil, beratapkan langit dan bintangbintang, yang memiliki kapasitas lebih dari 6.000
penonton (sebagian besar pertunjukan gratis). Ini
benar-benar tontonan yang luar biasa. Warisan
dan budaya masyarakat yang ditampilkan
memberikan pengalaman “bintang lima”. Selain
itu, ada banyak festival kelas dunia lainnya yang
berlangsung sepanjang tahun.
Berikutnya, saya menuju wilayah perbukitan
untuk melakukan sesuatu di luar keahlian
saya, bersepeda! Selama ini saya bertanya
dalam hati, kenapa orang-orang suka memakai
celana ketat warna-warni, mengendarai sepeda
yang beratnya hampir sama dengan croissant
yang saya makan, dan mengayuh sepenuh
tenaga melewati bukit dan lembah
dengan kecepatan tinggi... itu di luar
kemampuan saya.
Dengan sedikit ragu saya mengiyakan undangan
untuk bersepeda dengan beberapa teman, yang
fisiknya jauh lebih bugar. Kami berencana
melintasi perbukitan Ubud sepanjang 42 km.
Mobil minivan menjemput kami pukul 06.00
pagi dari vila di Sanur dan membawa kami ke
Gunung Batur, gunung berapi tertinggi kedua
di Bali, sekitar 90 menit perjalanan. Hari ini
tidak ada yang memakai celana Lycra dan
semua orang kelihatan santai. Kami memulai
hari dengan sarapan mewah di restoran yang
menghadap ke gunung merapi dan danau
indah di bawahnya.
Tak terasa tibalah waktunya bagi saya untuk
bersepeda. Sopir mengantar kami ke sebuah
lapangan, dan di sana kami disambut oleh kru Bali
Eco Cycle yang sudah menyiapkan sepeda-sepeda
gunung yang kokoh, dengan helm-helm berwarna
cerah. Setelah mendapat penjelasan singkat
tentang keselamatan, saatnya bagi saya untuk
melakukan kegiatan yang saya pikir akan sangat
melelahkan... tetapi ternyata saya salah!
Kalau diukur dengan skala kebahagiaan,
pengalaman bersepeda ini mendapat angka
sempurna, sepuluh! Bayangkan, Anda bersepeda
menuruni bukit sepanjang perjalanan. Dan setelah

dance, music and artistic expressions
will be on display as Bali showcases its
best cultural presentations. There will be
daily performances of dance and music
alongside countless related cultural and
commercial activities during which the
whole of Bali will converge on the city to
present offerings of dance, music and
beauty. The month-long festival will
commence with a parade of performers
from all districts in Bali and other
Indonesian provinces.
Selama satu bulan penuh, Bali
menyuguhkan beragam pergelaran
tari, musik dan pertunjukan seni
terbaiknya lewat sebuah festival
budaya. Setiap hari akan ada
pertunjukan musik dan tari yang
dapat Anda saksikan serta beragam
kegiatan budaya dan komersial yang
tak terhitung jumlahnya. Festival satu
bulan ini akan dibuka dengan pawai
oleh para peserta festival dari berbagai
kabupaten di Bali dan sejumlah
provinsi di Indonesia.
The Bali Kite Festival is an annual
international kite festival held in July in the
Padang Galak area, Sanur Beach, Bali.
Traditional giant kites (4 metres in width
and almost 10 metres in length) are made
and flown competitively by teams from the
villages (banjar) of Denpasar. The event
is a seasonal religious festival intended
to send a message to the Hindu gods
to create abundant crops and harvests.
The teams consist of about 70 to 80 people,
each team with its own Gamelan band,
flag bearers and flyers.
“Festival Layang-layang Bali” adalah
festival tahunan yang diselenggarakan
bulan Juli di Padang Galak, Pantai Sanur,
Bali. Layang-layang tradisional berukuran
raksasa (dengan lebar 4 m dan panjang
10 m) ini diterbangkan oleh berbagai
kelompok dari desa-desa di Denpasar.
Acara ini merupakan bentuk doa pada
para Dewa Hindu agar masyarakat
Bali diberikan panen yang besar. Setiap
tim beranggotakan 70-80 orang dan
terdiri dari penabuh gamelan, pembawa
bendera dan penerbang layang-layang.

grown over the past thirty years
worldwide. This event will include
a two-day trade-only business expo and
incorporate a two-day festival. During
this event participants will gain business
exposure and have the opportunity to
network with other international
business owners, while the two-day
festival will be open to the public and
aims to showcase all that is available
within the spa and wellness industry.

berkembang pesat 30 tahun terakhir

INCENSE
The scents of Bali are a gentle
assault on the senses. One you’ll
most likely first notice on arrival
is the prevalent sweet smell of
incense and fresh frangipani
wafting up slowly from the
offerings at family temples and
tiny three-by-three-inch palm
leaf pallets all over the streets,
on store counters, in taxis –
pretty much everywhere! Stop
by any street market to purchase
some incense sticks to bring
back home – close your eyes,
inhale and transport yourself
back to paradise in the
blink of an eye.

membelah desa-desa kecil dan sawah-sawah yang
menghijau dalam cahaya pagi, tanpa ada kendaraan
lain. Gambaran kehidupan pedesaan Bali terlihat

Jarak 42 km menjadi tidak terasa dan tiba-tiba
kami sudah sampai di tujuan, yakni sebuah
restoran menawan di tengah sawah yang luas
di pinggiran Ubud, untuk menyantap hidangan
makan siang tradisional Indonesia yang sudah
disiapkan. Hari ini adalah hari yang akan selalu
saya kenang dan layak disebut “bintang lima”
untuk pengalaman yang tak terlupakan.
Bila Anda ingin melihat langsung kehidupan
satwa liar di laut, Anda bisa naik kapal pesiar
di Lovina, utara Bali. Di pagi hari, ribuan lumbalumba yang melompat gembira di perairan biru
menyambut Anda, seolah ingin mengucapkan
selamat pagi. Atau Anda bisa menikmati indahnya
matahari terbit di Desa Amed yang menawan,
dan menghabiskan malam di pegunungan
Munduk yang berkabut, atau berenang di lepas
