Holiday Happiness for All
During the holiday season DVS’ three shelters are filled with displaced families who especially appreciate our
generosity and kindness at this time of the year. The ability to enjoy a safe and loving atmosphere is priceless.
Most appreciated are gift cards to establishments such as Target, Ross, at food stores and gas stations, bus
passes and admission to local activities. Gifts should be wrapped and identified.
If you or your family would like to participate in Holiday Happiness for All, you can send gifts to:

Barbara County (DVS) has provided
emergency shelters and a full range of
support services to homeless victims
of domestic violence since 1977. We
currently have three emergency shelters
and two long-term shelters called Second
Stage.

Because the 45-day shelter stay is
not typically long enough for women
to establish their own independent
households, in 1993 DVS launched
Second Stage, the first transitional
housing program for battered women
and their children in Santa Barbara
County. Second Stage is housed in two
12-unit apartment buildings in North
and South County where women and
their children benefit from 18 months of
affordable housing, counseling, advocacy
and other support. Nearly 95 percent
of Second Stage clients accomplish their
goals and establish their own independent
households - the majority in just a year’s
time.
As the only full-service domestic
violence agency in Santa Barbara County,
DVS also operates four 24-hour support
lines,
staffs
a
Domestic Violence
Emergency Response
Team (DVERT) which sends trained
client advocates to respond with law
enforcement to all 9-1-1 domestic
violence calls, conducts a countywide
teen education and outreach program,
and offers comprehensive counseling
services to all family members affected by
domestic violence. DVS offers 40-hour
training on domestic violence through
the DVS outreach program.
The mission of Domestic Violence
Solutions is to “end the intergenerational
cycle of domestic violence by providing
prevention and intervention services
and by challenging society’s attitudes,
beliefs, and behaviors to effect social
change.” As always, sheltering women
and their children, providing support to
those experiencing domestic violence,
and educating the community, especially
teens, about healthy relationships are the
agency’s priorities.
Thank you for your interest in Domestic
Violence Solutions! Thank you for being
part of the solution to domestic violence!

A Message from Associate Executive Director Marsha Marcoe
Presidents’ Report
High Esteem Tea
A Message from Board President, Claudette Roehrig
On October 6th close to 350 friends
and supporters gathered at the Bacara Resort
for Domestic Violence Solution’s 6th Annual
High Esteem Tea.
This year
the recipient
of the
“Pathways to
Hope” award
was a local,
influential
spokesperson
Betty J. Stephens & Sarah Weddington against
domestic abuse, Betty J. Stephens.
Betty’s personal story appears in the
book “If Love Hurts”, and last year she was
interviewed by KEYT’s Paula Lopez for a
two-part series about abusive relationships.
Her courage and continued support of DVS
is a constant source of gratitude to everyone
dedicated to the cause of raising awareness
and eradicating abuse in our County.
Presenting the award to Betty was her
longtime friend, Sarah Weddington, who
is best known for representing “Jane Roe” in
the landmark U.S. Supreme Court case Roe
v. Wade.
State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson,
the “Grand Damme” of auctioneering,
helped raise significant funds for the women
and children we shelter.
This year, Sen. Jackson authored senate
bill SB 400 that prevents employers from
firing or discriminating against an employee
who has been a victim of domestic violence,
sexual assault or stalking. Governor Jerry
Brown signed the bill that will go into
effect January 1, 2014. “ I commend the
governor for signing this bill which protects
victims from job loss and discrimination at
a time when they most need support and

a steady paycheck” said Sen. Jackson.
Hannah-Beth has been a champion of
women’s issues and continues to look for
solutions.
The highly anticipated guest speaker
was Denise Brown, whose normal life
was tragically altered on June 12, 1994
when her sister, Nicole Brown Simpson,
was brutally murdered. Since then,
Denise has been committed to raising
awareness about domestic violence, a
crime that kills 3 women every day in
the U.S.
One of her greatest
accomplishments was to lobby on behalf
of the Violence Against Women Act.
With a potential slashing of federal
funds allocated to domestic violence
services, Denise was asked to testify on
the portion of the bill being stalled in
committee. After her testimony, the
funding was increased from $18 million
to $32 million and she has been credited
as “having done more for the issue
of domestic violence than any other
individual” by VP Joe Biden and Sen.
Orrin Hatch.
Both Betty and Denise help
dispel misconceptions about victims
of domestic violence. Their stories
demonstrate that abuse crosses all
socioeconomic, cultural and gender
lines. We must change the societal
dialogue from “Why does she stay?” to
“How can we help?” and shift the blame
and shame from the victims to the
perpetrator.

Why We Give...
New to the community, Lauren and Steve Katz, attended
their first DVS Springtime event in 2005 at the invitation of a
DVS board member. Even with the pouring rain that evening,
Lauren and Steve quickly saw how dedicated people were to this
very important cause. Lauren quickly stepped up and offered
to use her fundraising skills and event planning expertise to
become the Springtime co-chair for the next few years. Steve’s
company, Atherton Lane Advisers, did not hesitate to become a
corporate sponsor for Springtime also.
In addition to Lauren spending countless hours volunteering for DVS, she and
Steve personally make DVS a priority for their annual giving. Domestic Violence
Solutions is an organization that is a vital lifeline to many in the Santa Barbara County.
With the talented and dedicated DVS board of directors and the management team,
many lives are saved every year.
“We will continue to support DVS with our time and money as long as a need
exists. This community is so fortunate to have such an effective and professional
agency to deal with this issue that affects not only individuals but families from all
walks of life.”

The sixth annual High Esteem Tea held at the Bacara Resort & Spa Ballroom raised over $100,000 with 350 attendees. The event exceeded
its goal thanks in part to the special guest speaker, Denise Brown, the Pathways to Hope award recipient Betty J. Stephens and the
amazing Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson the auctioneer. The High Esteem Tea Committee worked tirelessly throughout the year under the
Co-Chairs Judy Egenolf and Suellen Hilzer. DVS is grateful to all the table sponsors for the Six Annual High Esteem Tea who helped raise
the bar. Thanks to Suellen and Barret Hilzer for generously underwriting the dynamic speaker, Claudette & Jim Roehrig for sponsoring the
flowers, Kathy Borgers for sponsoring the award, and Valerie Greenberg for sponsoring the spa baskets. A special thank you goes to
Michael Holland and Bruce Goldish for the beautiful music and the lovely volunteers that helped throughout the event, Michelle Palaima,
Scarlet Ojeda, Kasey Smith, Jennifer Halter, Leanne Triana, Nicole Beckerhan, Yvonne Vega, Al Keys, Shelby Pudwell, Annie Hausler,
Lindsay Salzman, Elysia Aguero, Brett Donnelly, Stephanie Donnelly, and Livia Christian.

Thank you to the
Solution Caring Committee
Domestic Violence Solutions operates a
transitional housing program for women and
children fleeing violence called Second Stage. It
is designed to help survivors of domestic violence
make long-term positive changes for themselves
and for their children.
When a woman graduates from Second Stage,
she often needs many items to set up her new
home. Thankfully, an especially dedicated group
of volunteers and donors known as Part of the
Solution Caring Committee, formerly the Alegria
Road Social Club comes to the rescue.
Dick and Judy Cousineau have been helping
to furnish apartments at DVS since 2004 and have
gathered an amazing, caring group of friends to help
furnish the apartments. The original Alegria Road
Social club consists of Dick and Judy Cousineau,
John Torrell, Pat Ward, Janet Servatus along with
Julie and Dan Moore. The newest members are
Caleb, Josh, Ariana, and Olivia Cobb, Zandra
Cholmondely, Thom Perhal, Peggy Perhac , Ann
Steinman and Stan Lowenberg.
DVS and its clients are truly grateful to these
special folks who have helped so many families as
they reestablish their lives and homes in a safe and
supportive atmosphere.
