Excerpt of this ancient prayer is
from skandpuran, kashi khand.
Reverence and devotion to river
Ganga is ancient. sages, holy
men, yearned to be close to the
banks of this river which has its
beginnings in the gaumook glacier. it has been worshipped
enternally throughout the ages.
It is believed that this river flows
through the matted locks of lord
shiva. Its water is holy. Just one
drop of ganga jaal is capable of
giving salvation at the time of
death. One drop added to regular
water has the power to transform
all the water into Ganga jaal.
No matter, how long it is stored
for, it is bacteria free. From
ancient times she has been loved
by the people of india as a
"godess". Even today, Ganga arti
is performed all along her vererated banks. Ma Ganga gives us
salvation from the cycle of life
and death. a dip in the ganges is
an act of worship. when performed with faith it washes away
our sins. It heals the body and
mind of diseases and gives us
peace and harmony. The act of
bathing in the river, when performed with "faith" can give ultimate moksha.
Every l2 years, the kumbh mela
takes place in the cities of allahabad, ujjain, haridwar and
nasik. It is believed that when
the tussle for amrit (necter of
immortality) took place between
the gods and the demons, a few
drops of necter fell in the water
of these 4 holy towns. Hence,
every l2 years, people flock to
bath in the holy river during the
constellation of planets which are
considered very auspicious.
2010 JANUARY l4th is when the
kumbh Mela commenced in
Haridwar. Devotees, holy men,
sanyassis flocked from every part
of India to bathe in its holy
waters. I was fortunate to be
there on 11th - l4th April to
attend the most important Snaan
(bathe). It is believed the 33
crore devis and devatas are also
bathing in the Ganga at the time
of the Kumbh Mela(fair).
come here at this
time. This year,
countless devotees, once
againcame with
devotion and
faith to Ma
Ganga. It is the largest congregation of people in the world.
People, look like tiny ants, lining
the road, streets and by lanes.
Thousands, sleep on the road
side as accomodation and food
become scarce.
Jiddu Krishnamurti says "Life is
like a river: endlessly moving on,
ever seeking, exploring, pushingpenetrating every crevice with its
water. But, the mind wont allow
that to happen to itself. The mind
sees that it is dangerous, risky to
live in a state of impermanence,
insecurity so it builds a wall
around itself.....
Camps are pitched at allocated
sites, by the different Akharas.
It is very tragic to watch the
Ganga slowly dying because of
People try to spend as much as a

attending talks by learned pandits from all over India. It is a

carless neglect from people who
fail to realise the importance of
keeping it clean and pollution
free. My heart broke, to see
devotion and love on the one
hand, and utter oblivion on the
other. Yes, Ma Ganga is slowly
choking with plastic bags, refuse
of every kind from different parts
of the country. The fragile ecosystem is becoming more and
more threatened by industrial
pollution, sewage, and garbage.
Yet, she slowly bears with dignity
the abuse thrust into her waters.
How long will she take it, until a
day will come when there will be
no holy water for us to drink or
bathe in.
Important to note, that Gurumaa
received Sannyas mantra from
her spiritual Guru Swami
VedVyasanandji also at one of
the Kumbh Melas. Gurumaa had
her own chariot, which was
pulled through the streets of
Haridwar. Millions of people, rich
and poor line the streets to
receive blessings of the spiritual
leaders from all over India.
People use their lives savings to

nature in exactly the right proportion along with enzymes for
maximum assimilation. It has
Vitamin C, Vitamin A, B, E and K.
It has calcium, iron, sodium,
potassium, magnesium, selenium
and zinc. It contains all eight
essential amino acids. It has simple glucose too.
All the health food stores and
juice bars around Manhattan now
carry fresh wheat grass and offer
‘sots’ of wheat grass juice.
What is wheat-grass juice?
It is the fresh green juice from
young wheat. When we plant
grains of wheat, we get wheatgrass. After seven days of
growth, we can harvest a deep
green leafy vegetable rich in
chlorophyll and nutrients. Soak
wheat grains for 12 hours before
they are sown. Then, take them
out of the water and tie them in
a wet thick piece of cloth. Bind
the cloth tightly. The wheat
grains will start sprouting. Sow
the sprouted wheat grains, and
within 7 days you will get 5 to 7
inches of wheat grass. Sprinkle
water on the pot every 24 hours.
Do not pour water, as excess
water will hinder the growth of
the grass. Cut the grass with a
pair of clean scissors and put the
grass in a juice extractor. 100
grams of wheat grass can give
you about 5 to 6 ounces of juice.
This juice should always be consumed fresh. This juice cannot be
preserved for later consumption.
Do not consume anything 30
minutes before or after drinking

What are the benefits?
It increases your stamina, builds
healthy blood, cleanse your
whole system, aids digestion,
reduces cravings for addictive
substances, improves fertility,
inhibits the growth of diseasecausing bacteria and cancercausing chemicals.
Why does it have these
benefits?
The juice is rich in chlorophyll
and full of nutrients. Chlorophyll
is often called the blood of plants
because it is remarkably similar
in molecular structure to our own
blood. After much research, it
was established that it regenerates human blood. Chlorophyll
also has cancer-fighting abilities.

Vedic Heritage, New York. The beauty,
serenity, and historic significance of Vedic

Each statue was worshipped
according to the ancient Vedic
rituals. The sheer energy
invoked by the dedicated priests,
offering mantras, flowers, milk,
and numerous articles of worship
was an awe-inspiring experience.
Sunderkand Havan performed
with devotion by so many devotees of Lord Hanumanji and
Gurumaa was a memorable sight.
While there, I had the feeling
that some day in the future, this
place would become a Shakti
Peeth for worshippers from all
over the world. We are greatly
privileged to be able to
witness the installation
of the 4 statues.
Gurumaa's vision is
slowly taking shape
under Her watchful eye.

<17*:967< We all came together from far and near to be with
our beloved GuruMaa for this
historic beginning. The inaugural
celebration truly took on a life of
it's own. It opened into an
opportunity for so many to be
connected to one another in a
way that will not be forgotten.
Spiritual leaders, governmental
officials, dignitaries, musicians,
dancers, singers, guests, volunteers, builders, laborers and villagers all came in turn for the
festivities. During the two days
wonderful food and classical
entertainment energized our
spirits. Puja and Aarti provided
grounding for all attending. The
Sunderkand Hawan, so strong
and uplifting, provided a sense
of purpose and transformation.
It truly felt like the creation of a
physical spot, on this Earth for
9
healing the spirit within. Walking
in the garden and observing the
four Deities was an awesome
experience. GuruMaa brought
together so many core participants who have shown their
devotion to this endeavor. So
many have given time, funds,
labor and while embracing every
detail. The devotion of the board
of trustees and all who have
believed in this project speaks to
what can be
accomplished
when human
beings cooperate with one
another. It is a clear lesson in
that each of us is capable of
manifesting what is good beyond
normal possibilities in this life no
matter the size we dream.
GuruMaa teaches by Her action
and in Her own style. She is
forthright in Her convictions and
Her devotion to Her Baba, Sri
Hanuman Ji. Her full trust, purpose, and love have never
wavered. A special thank you to
you, GuruMaa for the many lessons, and for your brave undertaking in Baba's name.

for Beginners!
Singapore-based Coonoor
Kripalani, who conceptualised
and wrote the early-learning
series, introduces, “When my
daughters (now 26 and 22 years
old, both born and raised overseas) were quite small, teaching
them Hindi was tough without
readily available teachers. Lack
of stimulating material didn’t
inspire home-learning. Despite
having spent over 35 years out
of India, I still feel very close to
my Indian roots that is why I
wish my girls knew Hindi so that
they can feel more at home
when we visit India.”
Coonoor found Indian kids in
urban areas or overseas, tended
to go for the better-produced
English learning material, thus
neglecting Hindi. “We need to
raise the bar on this to attract
children towards learning Hindi. I

when she was 2-years-old. “I am
learning my basic Hindi while
teaching my 5-year old son
Arman.”
Much of the current Hindi teaching material available for beginners’ level, she finds “are

multiple illustrations for each

consonants clubbed in sections.
[I learnt a skeleton was called

with a quote by President Dr APJ
Abdul Kalam asking youth to

Affirms Singapore-based Dr.

Romanisation has been provided
for the first three books, which
will have taught the child the
sounds of the Hindi alphabet,
and how to read by putting the

upon this learning, reinforces it,
and teaches additional vocabulary and concepts.
The author of what might sound
like ‘child’s play’ has a creditable
track record as Honorary
Research Fellow at the Centre of
Asian Studies (CAS), University
of Hong Kong. A student of
Indian and Chinese modern history, Coonoor wrote her thesis
on a comparison between Gandhi
and Mao. Her published works
are found in both academic journals and newspapers and she is
currently engaged in research
and writing on Bollywood films.
Coonoor was recently appointed

on the board of Singapore’s
Asian Civilisations Museum.
Backed by these erudite qualifications, she stresses, “To know
one’s national language and/or
mother tongue is important for
one’s sense of self-identity, to
better understand one’s culture,
and of course, for one’s national
pride. India’s growing economic
affluence provides increasing
professional opportunities. For
Indian children raised overseas,
knowledge of Hindi will assist in
their assimilation there, should
they choose to work in India.”
She continues, “Children are like
sponges and learn new languages easily, so the more languages they are exposed to, the
better. They have a sixth sense
and are able to compartmentalise, and not confuse, different
languages.”
I believe, we need to act to

It is a big thank you to our
beloved Gurumaa, whose resolve
to keep in the fore front and
make premier, Indian Classical
Music and Dance here in the US.
When the day comes and the little children adorn the stage with
breath taking performances,
beautiful traditional attires,
expertise beyond their age, much
discipline in their line of art and
deliver beyond expectation, there
is much pride and honor to be
shared.
Standing ovations, full audience
that mostly stay till the end,
emotional award giving and a lingering buzz of how nice the program was or how talented the
children were is the testimony
Holi Talent Comp
We began the evening with 5
year old Mansi Sinha who sang
'Nani Teri Moorni' and set forth
the stage for the Vocal and
Instrumentalsections. Reema
Shah sang a very melodious
Bhajan. Following this was our
returning winner Tejas Tope only
12, on tabla who always gets
rounds of applause from the
audience.
that everyone takes home. It
was sheer delight and almost
enchanting.
A brief introduction to the day by
myself and Diya Lighting ceremony by the members of Vedic
Heritage's board along with the
judges amidst chants by Pdt.
Rameshji began the day. All
judges introduced themselves
stating their own achievements

children from our temple were
chosen to be masters of ceremony who sounded great in unison
until reality kicked in and they
got hungry! They did their best,
especially when the write up on

Ashcharya Balaji.
The next participant was the
highlight of the entire program.
As little Vivek Pandya he walked
on stage, I told the audience that
this literally 2 1/2' child was not
just loitering on the stage, but,
was the next participant and a
collective sigh in amazement was

my response. Before he started,
the audience was amused, when
he started they could not believe
their eyes and ears, as he went
on they applauded, when he
recited the 'taal' and beats they
said, "bahut ache", when he
played highlights they were mesmerized and when he finished
the entire thrilled and pleasantly
surprised audience gave a standing ovation for minutes in a row.
A true 'Ustad' and 'a gifted born
Star' was this little Vivek Pandya
who made his parents and all of
us proud of our heritage. He tied
in first place with Tejas Tope.
Bhajans sung by Priyanka Tope
and Subhi Khanna were followed
by children from CT who
attempted to put together a
Karnatak vocal and instrumental
piece. An older 14 year old
Keshav Gadiraju from NJ and
Adity Sampat gave more mature
Karnatak recitals. The opening
dance was an 'Allaripu', performed by Ayushi Gupta 6 yrs.
She courageously head started

very well presented. Next was a
solo by Dimple Shah with prostrations and precise technical
steps of an advance composition
by Maharaja Swati Thirunal.
Group performances done by Ms
Satya Pradeep's students who did
a 'Thillana' and 'Thadu Paadam'
captivated attention for the
rhythm, their smooth movements
and transitions. Heena Khanijou
gracefully presented a solo
'Kathak Dance'.
A 'Diya Dance', was performed
by students of Smt Laxmi Kurup
mpetition
where the girls had two earthen
pots and candles and demonstrated a wonderful sense of balance and technique with
Bharatnatyam steps. A live group
'Kathak' performance was given
by Shri Sayeed Asghar Tiemizi's
students, Archa Joshi and Naqiya
Chonawala accompanied on tabla
by Tejas Tope and Vocals by
Priyanka Tope and Guruji himself.
They were absolutely enchanting
as they circled the stage and
breath taking when the hold their

was flawless.

bubbling with enthusiasm and
impatience to see who won and a
panel of utterly confused judges
as to who actually won!! Theyall
did, literally! There were a lot of
tie positions as the judges
tried to make every participant 'a
