SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT
THE TRANSFIGURATION OF JESUS
Today’s Gospel is one of those special Scriptures where God the Father honors
Jesus His Son. In this reading we see Jesus
taking Peter, James and John with Him on
the mountain to pray (Lk 9:28). Perhaps, one
of the reasons Jesus always chose these
three apostles to accompany Him was because of their part in God’s plan. Peter was
to be the rock upon which Jesus was going
to build His church. James was going to be
the first apostle to be martyred. John was
going to be the last apostle to die. They all
needed the strength to face the coming trials, especially Jesus’ coming passion and
death.
On this mountain, a miracle occurs.
Jesus is transfigured. “While is was praying
His face changes in appearance and His
clothes became dazzling white” (Lk 9:29).
Moses and Elijah appeared in glory and
talked with Jesus about His coming passion
and death in Jerusalem.
While Jesus is in prayer the apostles
fall asleep. They wake up just in time to see
His glory and the two men who were getting
ready to leave Him. This is such an amazing
sight and so far beyond this natural realm
that the apostles are overwhelmed.
Then a cloud comes and they become
frightened when they entered the cloud (Lk
9:34). “Then from the cloud came a voice
that said, “This is my chosen Son; listen to
Him (Lk 9:35). The words of God the Father
are simple and to the point.
The Father’s words are also for us today. As we examine ourselves this Lent let
us see if we are listening to Jesus and doing
what He says. The apostles saw Jesus and
heard the Father’s voice first hand yet we
are not at a disadvantage for we have the
Holy Spirit living in us. If we ask Him and
give Him permission,
PUBLISHED WEEKLY
He’ll make the gospel come alive in our lives.
In many different ways He’ll show us the glory
of Jesus and allow us to hear the voice of the
Father.
