From the Pastor’s Desk…
No price too high
Today’s Gospel is taken from the last chapter of John’s
Gospel which centers upon the primacy of St. Peter's role in the
early Church and how our Lord designated him as first among
the Apostles. Three times Jesus asks Peter if he loves Him, and
every time, Peter expresses his loyalty to Jesus. The Fathers of
the Church tell us that Jesus asks Peter the same question three
times as a remedy for Peter's three denials. In mercy, Jesus gives
him another chance to be a strong witness of His Resurrection.
After each of Peter's responses, Jesus gives Peter a mandate to
feed and tend the flock of believers.
As the first Pope, Peter would establish the Church in
Rome and feed the Lord's flock with the Sacraments and govern
them as their chief shepherd. This has been the charge of every
one of Peter's 266 successors all the way down to Pope Francis.
In the first reading (Acts 5) we learn about how Peter and
the other Apostles rejoiced that they had been found worthy to
suffer dishonor for the sake of the name of the Lord Jesus. They
were firm in their conviction that it was better for them to
obey God rather than Human beings. What about us? Do we
stand for Christ and His Church?
I know we are living in a culture where the temptation to
succumb to human respect is very strong. Obeying and following
God, rather than other Human beings, is not always easy. But we
are called to follow the example of St. Peter and the disciples to
courageously proclaim the Resurrection of Christ. We must
never allow anyone to stop us from speaking in the name of Jesus.
God bless you,
Fr. John Francis
